Today in Movie Culture: Bill Nye on 'Star Trek' vs. 'Star Wars,' BB-8 Cake Recipe and More Posted: 09 Dec 2015 11:00 PM PST Here are a bunch of little bites to satisfy your hunger for movie culture: Star Wars vs. Star Trek: Shockingly, not everyone is super excited for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. We've already heard from Neil deGrasse Tyson on why he favors Star Trek to Star Wars, but now Bill Nye chimes in, as well (via Geek Tyrant): Dessert of the Day: If you are excited about the new Star Wars and want another way to celebrate next week's opening, here's how to make a tasty BB-8 droid cake (via Neatorama): Movie Mashup of the Day: We know so little about Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) from Star Wars: The Force Awakens, so maybe he actually will turn out to be a folk singer on the side (via Jason Gorber): Movie Comparison of... Posted: 09 Dec 2015 09:30 PM PST Let's face it: Just about anything we see, do, read, or watch this month is just a precursor to Star Wars: The Force Awakens. J.J. Abrams' long-awaited sequel is shaping up to be one of the biggest movies of all time, but that doesn't mean there aren't a few noteworthy books, movies, and other assorted geekery worth checking out this December. Here are ten items you might want to keep on your radar. Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens Okay, so there's probably no need to remind anyone about this one, but in case you just woke up from a coma, there's a new Star Wars movie arriving in theaters December 18. It's directed by Star Trek reboot maestro J.J. Abrams, set 30 years after the events of Episode VI – Return of the... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Watch: Michael B. Jordan Got Completely KO'd While Filming 'Creed' Posted: 09 Dec 2015 08:00 PM PST You know how your parents will often carry around embarrassing photos of you when you were little to show off an inopportune times to maximize your feeling like a real doofus? Well Sylvester Stallone is doing something similar when it comes to Michael B. Jordan in the form a video that shows the actor getting KO'd for real while filming the new movie Creed, in theaters this week. In an interview with Fandango, Stallone talks about wanting Jordan -- who plays the son of Rocky's former best friend and world champion boxer, Apollo Creed -- to take a good hard punch to know what it feels like. "Michael [got] completely clocked," Stallone teased. "Let me see if I can find it. [Goes through files on his phone] Wow, did he get demolished. Yikes. After... 'Kingsman' Star Touted for 'The Mummy,' But Is Tom Cruise In or Out? Posted: 09 Dec 2015 07:30 PM PST Are you ready for a monster that is decidedly feminine? We just heard that the villainous Captain Phasma in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, played by Gwendoline Christine, was originally envisioned by writers J.J. Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan as a male character. Now comes word that the titular creature in Universal's upcoming new version of The Mummy will be portrayed by a woman. Sofia Boutella, who broke out with her role in Kingsman: The Secret Service, is in talks to star as the mummified monster, according to THR. In the 1932 original, Boris Karloff portrayed Imhotep, an Egyptian priest who was buried alive because he attempted to resurrect his forbidden lover. He is revived in the 20th century and seeks the reincarnation of his lost love. Through the various... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Mondo Poster Premiere: Before Nightcrawler Joined the X-Men, He Was Der Nachtschwärmer Posted: 09 Dec 2015 06:00 PM PST There was a time when Mondo, the boutique art company owned by the Alamo Drafthouse, would only make posters tied directly to movies. However, in the past few years they opened up a gallery in Austin, Texas and use it as a venue for art that isn't necessarily tied to a single movie. Sometimes they do shows for a single artist, sometimes they do shows with a single topic but put together by many different artists. The latter is the goal of their next gallery, Snikt Bamf Thwip: A Celebration of Marvel Comics. The new gallery, opening on December 11, 2015, has over a dozen killer artists contributing pieces (some already-released ones are above) honoring the characters and world of Marvel Comics-- a world that has been bleeding into the big screen for quite some time now... First Look: Carrie Fisher's Daughter Sports Princess Leia's Hair in 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Posted: 09 Dec 2015 04:22 PM PST Although she claims her character is not related to Princess General Leia, it's hard to ignore the similarities between Carrie Fisher's real-life daughter, Billie Lourd, and the character her mom first portrayed way back in the late-'70s. I mean, that hair! People has revealed this first look at Lourd's character in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, who appears to be part of the resistance headed up by General Leia. Is she secretly related to Leia, or is she just a fan? Or maybe that's just how women wear their hair in Star Wars, and there's nothing else to it. Either way we're loving the nod to Leia's original hairstyle and of course we wanna know if (and how) it factors into the film and/or her character. Speaking about her... 'Dirty Dancing' Musical Remake Headed to TV Starring Abigail Breslin Posted: 09 Dec 2015 03:00 PM PST Five years after we first heard of plans for one, a Dirty Dancing remake is finally going to be a reality. But this won't be another theatrical release. And it won't be directed by the original movie's choreographer, High School Musical helmer Kenny Ortega, as initially announced in 2011. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it will be made for television, as was reported back in February before the whole thing was shelved again over the summer. And it will be a musical. Made-for-TV musicals are all the rage lately, following NBC's productions of The Sound of Music, Peter Pan and The Wiz, which aired last week, and Fox's upcoming take on Grease. Unlike those, however, ABC's Dirty Dancing musical will not be a live broadcast... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
SAG Nominations: 'The Martian' Snubbed as 'Trumbo' and 'Straight Outta Compton' Surprise Posted: 09 Dec 2015 01:37 PM PST The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) has doled out its nominations for the year, with surprising results. Among the shockers was a big turnout for Trumbo, scoring nominations for Bryan Cranston (Best Actor), Helen Mirren (Best Supporting Actress) and Best Ensemble (SAG's version of Best Picture). Other awards wild cards that nabbed nods include Sarah Silverman (Best Actress, I Smile Back), Straight Outta Compton (Best Ensemble), Rachel McAdams (Best Supporting Actress, Spotlight), little Jacob Tremblay (Best Supporting Actor, Room) and Beasts of No Nation (Best Ensemble, as well as Idris Elba with a Best Supporting Actor nod). The snubs? Well, you could say Spotlight was snubbed in the acting categories. The film many believe features the best ensemble cast of the year walked... Watch: The Giant First Trailer for Steven Spielberg's 'The BFG' Posted: 09 Dec 2015 01:00 PM PST If you're not familiar with Roald Dahl's tale The BFG, then let us start with what "The BFG" actually means: The Big Friendly Giant. Steven Spielberg's adaptation of Dahl's timeless story -- and the director's first for Walt Disney -- follows the adventures of an orphan girl named Sophie who's whisked away to a land full of giants by the only friendly one among the bunch. Or, well, the only one who doesn't eat children, we should say. Check out the first teaser trailer below, which sets up the film's fantastical premise. The BFG is due out on July 1, 2016, and marks a return to family-friendly movies for Spielberg (his last being 2011's The Adventures of Tintin). It's hard not to anticipate the... Movie News: First Look at Alexander Skarsgard in 'The Legend of Tarzan' Posted: 09 Dec 2015 12:00 PM PST The Legend of Tarzan: Our first look at Alexander Skarsgard in The Legend of Tarzan reveals him to be a very muscular man of the jungle. The movie finds the titular character some ten years after he's returned home to England and settled into his life as Lord Greystoke, accompanied by his wife Jane (Margot Robbie). When he returns to Africa and his wife and friends are endangered, he must put on his old loincloth to save them. Look for the movie in theaters on July 1. [USA Today] Suburbicon: George Clooney's noir drama Suburbicon is moving forward. As we noted in October, it's based on an original script by Joel and Ethan Coen -- together with Clooney, above, during filming of Burn After Reading -- set in the 1950s. Matt Damon, Julianne Moore and Josh... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
