Posted: 31 Dec 2015 09:00 PM PST

2015 is over and it was one helluva year for the movies. Box office records were smashed. Veteran filmmakers returned with a vengeance. Stars were born. Now it's time to take a few steps back, look at what transpired and reflect...in list-form. Yes, it's time to do what we've done in years past and select the 10 people who "won" the movies in 2015. These actors, actresses, filmmakers, and entities represent the cream of the crop, the people who dominated this year in one way or another, overcoming great odds or simply wowing us with their output. Let's begin. 10. Ridley Scott: The Comeback Kid After nearly a decade of disappointments and misfires, the legendary director of Alien and Blade Runner delivered his best film in decades with The...

The Geek Beat: The 10 Best Geeky Movies of 2015

Posted: 31 Dec 2015 07:00 PM PST

Well, that's it, folks. Another year is in the rearview mirror. It's a bit of an understatement to say that 2015 was one for the record books. At various points during the last 12 months, it seemed as if the bar for box-office success was being raised every week – and not by small increments, either. Records changed hands countless times over the year, and in a win for geeks everywhere, most of the the movies making and breaking those records hailed from the worlds of sci-fi, fantasy, and superhero fare. Given the plethora of great films this year, choosing ten that stood above the rest wasn't an easy task. Sure, some choices were easy – Mad Max: Fury Road, for example – but for the most part, it was a tough list to narrow down. So, without...

The 25 Best Movie Posters of 2015

Posted: 31 Dec 2015 05:00 PM PST

It's really hard to pin down a set of criteria for what actually makes for a perfect movie poster. What works for one movie simply won't work for another. Some can get away with a ton of text or blatant Photoshop, while others need to keep things basic.  So there are no rules when it came to putting together this Best Posters of 2015 list. These are simply the 25 posters of the year that left an impression so distinct we couldn't help but throw a spotlight on them.   25. XX A lot of horror movies do the whole "poster made out of a skull" thing, but few have found such an evocative way of doing it as this poster for the forthcoming, all-female horror anthology XX.   24. Ant-Man Most of the Ant-Man posters struggled to communicate...

Disney Rings In the Zoo Year With a New 'Zootopia' Trailer

Posted: 31 Dec 2015 03:30 PM PST

One of our most anticipated movies of 2016 is the latest animated feature from Walt Disney. Zootopia could turn out to be the cleverest non-Pixar release from the studio in ages, and a recent spot highlighting a hilarious scene at a sloth-run DMV has already made it a huge hit with moviegoers this holiday season. Now there's another full trailer for the feature, which sort of looks inspired by Richard Scarry books but is a completely original work from the animation house traditionally known for adapting classic fairy tales. Well, there are some things lifted from other material as homage, such as the umpteenth spoof of The Godfather, but otherwise it's entirely fresh. Zootopia is set in a world full of anthropomorphic mammals, and as we learn from this new...
