Today in Movie Culture: Han Solo Is a Time Traveler, Movie Characters Cover Adele's "Hello" and More Posted: 03 Dec 2015 11:00 PM PST Here are a bunch of little bites to satisfy your hunger for movie culture: Star Wars Supercut of the Day: Vulture compiled all of the dialogue spoken by a female character other than Princess Leia in the original Star Wars trilogy and it's barely a minute in length: Star Wars Science of the Day: Kyle Hill of Nerdist's Because Science makes a case that Han Solo of the Star Wars movies is a time traveler: Year-End Recap of the Day: Another day closer to 2016, another great montage of the movies of 2015. This one is by Nick Bosworth for JoBlo.com: Movie Mashup of the Day: Is Adele's "Hello" still great without Adele's voice? Yes, if it's covered by all your favorite movie characters instead (via... A Very DVD Obscura Christmas: Your Guide to New Holiday Movies to Stock Up On Posted: 03 Dec 2015 09:30 PM PST Every time you channel-surf in December, your eyeballs are being assaulted by the holiday season. But with these great new home video releases, you can control the narrative and have exactly the kind of Christmas entertainment that jingles your bells. Movies: The biggest of the holiday releases – if only in sheer size – is the Nakatomi Plaza: Die Hard Collection (Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment). Not only does this set include all five Die Hard movies (and yes, only the first two are set at Christmas, but they’re icons of the genre), but it all comes in an impressive scale model of the building where the original movie takes place. (I’d love to start seeing Nakatomi Plazas in decorated homes, between the crèche and the Dickens... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Peter Jackson Issues a Statement to Save a Man's Life Posted: 03 Dec 2015 08:00 PM PST Not every country has the freedom for its citizens to ridicule their leader. In Turkey, for instance, a man can be jailed for visually comparing the president to a movie villain on social media. In fact, one has. Dr. Bilgin Ciftci posted an image on Facebook showing three photos of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan side-by-side with similarly posed photos of Smeagol, a character portrayed via performance capture by Andy Serkis in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy. Ciftci was fired and now faces two years in prison. The offense is that Smeagol is being mistaken for Gollum, his nastier alter ego, and because Gollum is considered to be such a bad guy the comparison has been deemed an insult by the authorities. Cifti didn't threaten or harshly criticize... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
The New 'Friday the 13th' Reboot Takes One Step Forward, One Step Back Posted: 03 Dec 2015 06:15 PM PST Friday the 13th was rebooted back in 2009 and even though that movie and the way it slides into the world of Jason Voorhees is actually pretty great and one of the best reboots of the last decade or so, the reboot is being rebooted. It's not entirely because people were unhappy with the last attempt, though. It's all very inside baseball-y, but the short version is that Warner Bros. traded their stake in a number of films, including Friday the 13th, to Paramount in exchange for getting a slice of ownership in the Paramount-produced Interstellar. So now Paramount and Platinum Dunes are pressing the reset button on everything, which is fine, but it's taking them a while to do so. For the last year or so indie director David Bruckner had been attached to direct the... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler Want to Remind You 'Star Wars' Isn't The Only Movie Opening That Day Posted: 03 Dec 2015 03:15 PM PST It seems like Star Wars: The Force Awakens is all anyone can think about or talk about it or even look at now that we're two weeks out from its release. But did you know it's not the only movie opening in theaters on December 18th? It's true! Other movies will continue to exist in its shadow. Sisters, a new comedy from Pitch Perfect director Jason Moore starring Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, also opens in wide release on that day, and they've just released a new video to remind people of that. In the video, Fey, Poehler and the rest of their cast (which includes Maya Rudolph and Ike Barinholtz) get delightfully meta and pretend that their little movie, about two sisters who throw one last party in their childhood home, has a rich legacy and a ton of fancy special... 2016 Sundance Film Festival: These Are the Upcoming Indie Movies You're Looking For Posted: 03 Dec 2015 01:30 PM PST This is the time of year when people are planning the gifts they will give to family and friends during the holiday season -- and also anticipating the gifts they might be receiving! It's much the same for movie fans, although we have already received an early gift: the 65 films selected for the competition sections at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival. Why do we call this announcement a gift? Because chances are very good that these are the indie films that will dominate the cinematic conversations we enjoy during the coming year. If you doubt that, take a moment and scan the list from the 2015 fest, then note how many titles ended up getting theatrical releases at theaters nationwide, and are now being talked about for year-end awards consideration. The films that will... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
