Dear Nicolas Cage, Please Come to This Awesome Celebration of Your Movies

Posted: 14 Dec 2015 08:30 PM PST

There are many reasons to love the Alamo Drafthouse chain of movie theaters. They've got a strict no-talking policy. They serve quality food and drinks. They know how to properly exhibit movies so they always look and sound great. They also don't exclusively show new release movies.  Take, for example, Tough Guy Cinema. Not only do they show older action movies throughout the month, but every now and then they take over a theater for a day and marathon movies with a theme. They've done Van Dammage, a marathon of Jean-Claude Van Damme movies. They've done Russellmania, a truly terrific marathon of Kurt Russell movies. But the king of all these marathons is Nicolas Cage. The misunderstood genius that is Nicolas Cage has been a source of so many great movies...

Watch the Legendary John Williams Conduct the Score for 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens'

Posted: 14 Dec 2015 07:00 PM PST

There are certain components to a Star Wars movie that makes a fan super excited, and a number of those components hit them right from the start. There's the Lucasfilm logo, the opening crawl and of course the score. Not just the iconic theme, which is heard over the crawl, but also the first notes of new music we get as the movie begins, before we see any characters or know any of the plot. It sets the mood. And few composers are as magical when it comes to this sort of set-up as John Williams. We're only a few days from the opening of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but until last night, during a segment on 60 Minutes, nobody had heard much of the new movie's score. The soundtrack comes out the same day as the movie, because Williams' emotional soundscapes...

Why Han Solo Is Still Flying the Millennium Falcon 30 Years Later

Posted: 14 Dec 2015 04:00 PM PST

The lifespan of an automobile varies. Some folks can't hold onto a car for more than a few years, while others will make that sucker last for a decade or more. Meanwhile, your average commercial jet lasts somewhere in the neighborhood of 16 years. Han Solo, on the other hand, has been flying the Millennium Falcon for decades... or roughly 40 years when you count up the time between the first three Star Wars movies and also The Force Awakens. Prior to Solo, though, the Falcon belonged to Lando Calrissian, and the iconic Star Wars ship was even around during the era of Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith, which took place around 18 years before A New Hope, as evidenced in this cameo from the prequel. So, yeah, the Millennium Falcon is old. Like, really old. And...

First 'Star Trek Beyond' Trailer Gets a Blast of Energy From 'Fast & Furious' Director

Posted: 14 Dec 2015 03:00 PM PST

There was a time when it seemed like Star Trek Into Darkness may have killed the future of Star Trek on the big screen. The box office numbers weren't through the roof. Critical and popular reaction to the film was dire. Into Darkness was even voted the worst Star Trek movie ever made at Las Vegas' annual Star Trek convention. In fact, seemingly out of spite, the attendees voted Galaxy Quest was a better Star Trek movie than Into Darkness. And then, as final salt in the wound, J.J. Abrams went and abandoned ship, moving from Star Trek to Star Wars. Things were not looking good. Until, that is, Fast & Furious director/franchise rejuvenator Justin Lin decided it was time for him to leave the racing world behind and board a spaceship. He signed on as the director of...

First 'Independence Day: Resurgence' Trailer Threatens Desperate Times Ahead

Posted: 14 Dec 2015 11:00 AM PST

The spectacular first trailer for Independence Day debuted during Super Bowl XXX on January 28, 1996, a day that will live in infamy for movie lovers. The trailer featured disaster on an unprecedented scale as an alien race launched a coordinated attack upon mankind; it's safe to say that the special effects sent a thrill through the spine of everyone who saw it. We're older and wiser now. We've seen so many scenes of mass destruction over the years, made possible by advances in visual effects, that it's no longer startling to behold. Director Roland Emmerich made several action blockbusters seeking to duplicate the worldwide success of Independence Day -- Godzilla, The Day After Tomorrow, 2012 -- but fans still cried out for a sequel to the alien-invasion tale...
