Patrick Dempsey Responds to Shonda Rhimes's 'Grey's Anatomy' Confession Posted: If Patrick Dempsey knows why his character was written off on "Grey's Anatomy," he isn't talking -- and that includes speculating about the identity of the actor showrunner Shonda Rhimes says she killed off for personal reasons. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Dempsey was asked point blank if he thought that Rhimes was talking about him when she told Larry Wilmore in November that she axed an actor because she didn't like him (or her). Like Rhimes, Dempsey did a good job of (mostly) dodging the question, though he did tell EW that he thought his former boss said what she did because "she loves being provocative," and that it "gets people talking about all the stuff that she's doing" -- though the actor added that that wasn't necessarily a bad thing. "She's an amazing woman who is incredibly productive," Dempsey said of Rhimes. "She's promoting a book. She's promoting three shows. And she's emerging as the star of all of these things. I think she knows how to deal with the media and what she needs to say to get the response that she's looking for. She's very savvy." While the actor's words are not really the response we were looking for, they do indicate that Dempsey is pretty over talking about "Grey's" (the rest of his EW interview focused on his passion for racing and his upcoming role in the threequel "Bridget Jones's Baby"). We may never definitively learn what happened, but both Rhimes and Dempsey's non-answer answers give us a pretty good indication of the truth (or some version of it, anyway). 'Jurassic World' Congratulates 'The Force Awakens' on Box Office Record Posted: Receipts are still rolling in for "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," but the flick has easily broken the record for best domestic opening of all time -- maybe by more than anyone ever imagined -- and has now also claimed the crown for best global opening ever. Both those records were set this earlier year by a fellow long-awaited sequel to a long-dormant franchise, "Jurassic World," and the filmmakers behind that project have proven that they're good sports about their defeat with a clever new ad aimed at the "Force Awakens" crew. Frank Marshall, one of the producers of "Jurassic World," tweeted out the ad on Monday, which features a T-rex giving a medal to droid BB-8 -- the same one presented to Luke Skywalker and Han Solo by Princess Leia in the original "Star Wars" flick. The text of the ad says, "Universal Pictures, Steven, Frank and Colin Congratulate Star Wars The Force Awakens on the biggest opening weekend in galactic history."
Such displays of goodwill are common in Hollywood, going back to a tradition begun by Steven Spielberg and George Lucas in the 1970s. Spielberg famously took out an ad congratulating Lucas on "Star Wars" unseating "Jaws" as the biggest-earning domestic flick; Lucas later returned the gesture when Spielberg's "E.T." took back the record in 1982, and addressed a similar ad to James Cameron in 1997, when "Titanic" made its "Wars"-shattering debut. Most recently, "Jurassic World" was on the receiving end of such congratulations when it broke Marvel's box office record for the domestic debut of "The Avengers." Disney is no doubt glad to once again own the title -- and probably not too eager to draw up another concession ad anytime soon. Then again, based on "The Force Awakens"'s blockbuster numbers, it seems unlikely that it will have to. 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Breaks Global Box Office Record Posted: That was fast: After shattering numerous box office records over the weekend -- including obliterating "Jurassic World's" domestic opening weekend tally -- "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" has proven that it's an international powerhouse as well, officially breaking "World's" global record total, too. In an interview with Bloomberg on Monday morning, Disney chief Bob Iger said that while numbers are still rolling in, "The Force Awakens" is currently on track to earn approximately $528 million over its first three days, surpassing "World's" opening weekend global total of $524.9 million. It previously bested that flick's domestic opening total of $208.8 million, too, with early estimates suggesting "Force" had earned about $238 million. But the good news continues for Disney: Iger said Monday that those initial estimates were actually lower than what the company is currently tracking, and "The Force Awakens" could wind up with a domestic opening haul of a whopping $247 million -- or possibly even higher. "That's an incredible weekend," Iger told Bloomberg, in one of the biggest understatements ever. With all the tickets it's already sold, expect "The Force Awakens" to remain a box office powerhouse for the foreseeable future. The records can only keep falling from here. Obi-Wan and Yoda Were Also in 'The Force Awakens,' ICYMI Posted: WARNING: This post contains SPOILERS about the plot of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." Read on only if you've already seen the film. Millions of people flocked to movie theaters this weekend to watch "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," which broke all kinds of box office records during its debut. But many of them may have missed two key cameos: Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda. For those of you scratching your heads, trying to figure out how you overlooked the two Jedi masters, you should know that the classic "Star Wars" characters didn't actually appear onscreen -- rather, it was their voices that were present in the production. But where, and how? In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, "The Force Awakens" director J.J. Abrams confirmed the characters' presence in the flick, and revealed that they appeared in voiceover during the scene in which Rey (Daisy Ridley) discovers Luke Skywalker's (Mark Hamill) lightsaber in the basement of Maz Kanata's (Lupita Nyong'o) castle. When she touches the weapon, Rey has a vision or flashback of sorts, in which she sees Luke's bionic hand reach out to R2-D2, as well as the villainous Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) standing over a pile of bodies, among other images. It's a trippy, chaotic sequence, but if you listen closely you can hear the voices of Obi-Wan and Yoda, some of which was new dialogue recorded specifically for "The Force Awakens." Abrams revealed that filmmakers used existing audio of the late Sir Alec Guinness (who played Obi-Wan in the original trilogy) as well as new material from Ewan McGregor (who played a younger version of the Jedi in the prequels) to create the line, "Rey ... these are your first steps." (Abrams says engineers took part of the word "afraid" from one of Guinness's original trilogy lines to make "Rey.") And Frank Oz, who both puppeteered and voiced Yoda in the earlier films, also recorded new dialogue, though filmmakers ended up using existing footage of the pint-sized Jedi master in the finished "Force Awakens." As for what all of the things that Rey saw actually mean, Abrams stopped short of revealing too much, reminding EW that some of the most iconic moments in the original "Star Wars" series didn't come until later in the trilogy, and the same is true of these new films. "This is the first of a series," Abrams said. "There is a story to be told. And it will be." We're already hungry for more. "Episode VIII" can't come soon enough. But you can still watch it with the kids via digital download starting December 22, and the digital release comes with a bunch of special features. "Everest" "Everest" documents the awe-(and terror)inspiring journey of two different expeditions challenged by a major snowstorm as they attempt to reach the summit of the world's highest mountain. The Blu-ray and Digital HD releases include behind-the-scenes interviews with Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro; a look at the visual design of the film with director Denis Villeneuve; a feature on the creation of the score with Oscar-nominated composer Jóhann Jóhannsson; and a discussion about writer Taylor Sheridan's research for the script. TV Worth Watching "The Great Holiday Baking Show" (Monday on ABC at 10 p.m.)Somehow, it's already time for the finale of America's holiday version of the U.K.'s "Bake-Off" show. Who will be the big winner -- Lauren, Tim, or Nicole? (Guessing Lauren.) Whatever happens, here's rooting for more yummy fun from judges Mary Berry, Johnny Iuzzini, and company. Can ABC please make this a regular season-length show in 2016? "It's A Wonderful Life" (Thursday on NBC at 8 p.m.) Christmas Eve wouldn't be the same without "It's a Wonderful Life." Frank Capra's 1946 classic airs over three hours Thursday night, so consider putting it on in the background while you bake cookies or do whatever it is that you do before Santa arrives. "It's Your 50th Christmas, Charlie Brown" (Thursday on ABC at 8 p.m.) If you're just not that into George Bailey and his Bedford Falls problems, consider checking out ABC's Christmas Eve double-dose of Charlie Brown. 'Homeland' Fans Are Angry, Confused About Quinn After Season 5 Finale Posted: The "Homeland" Season 5 finale aired last night and actress Alyssa Milano's concise tweet summed up the reaction of many viewers:
Why? Maybe for more than one reason, but fans are now mourning the death of Rupert Friend's Peter Quinn ... unless they're still just confused about his status. Quinn suffered a brain hemorrhage; if he lived, he'd have serious brain damage. Claire Danes' Carrie Mathison ended up removing his pulse monitor at the end of the episode. RIP, Quinn. But we didn't actually see him die, and whenever a death isn't obvious -- and sometimes even when it IS obvious -- fans leave room for speculation and doubt. After all, we've been burned by fake-out deaths from "The Walking Dead," "Game of Thrones, "The Leftovers," and "Homeland" all in 2015. However, as TVLine put it, "While it's true we didn't actually see Carrie pull the plug, given the extent of Quinn's brain injury, Homeland would risk mass ridicule if it returned in Season 6 with Quinn still alive; he's dead, people." And maybe that's a blessing -- they can't torture him anymore!
Commenters had mixed reactions to the finale, but the most vocal fans were the ones angry or confused about Quinn. Here's a sampling: • I'm Done with Homeland • Agreed. This show is no longer smart tv. It's full of cliches and easy to guess outcomes. • Ditto. I was in it for Quinn. Killing him off killed me off. I love Mandy Patinkin, but I just can't stick it out for him. Not anymore. • Totally agree with you! These last couple of episodes have been a preview of homeland without Quinn and I'm just not interested. He is an awesome character and the main draw of the show for me. I hate what the writers did to him this season. It's lazy and a cheap way to get people talking about the show. Looking back on how he ended up with the terrorists to begin with highlights how ridiculous this outcome is for him. Part of me would like to believe that the light was him waking up and if it had ended with just Carrie, I could talk myself into believing it. Quinn made Carrie tolerable for me so without him, I just can't watch her! This was a mistake for the show and I really hope S6 is the end. Without Quinn, it will be without a lot of viewers! Bad move, Homeland. • I'm so confused...I didn't think she actually killed him...at least they didn't show it. She just removed the pulse monitor thingy. I really thought when the light came through the room, she changed her mind. • I very much enjoy this series of any other on TV. Silly might sound I cried for Quinn, sorry to end his life. Hoping that Carrie would have realized that he was the only one who really loved her and she never did realize this. Who wants a vegetable so they killed him off, sorry for that! Carrie again faces another grief in her life with losing her first lover. Do not kill off this series, continue the thoughtful and sometimes touching. • I don't think it's a fact that carrie went through with it. I think we will find out next year. • Don't know if I'll come back next year. Love Carrie but Quinn was the heart of the show for me because of all he went through and kept coming back. • like Brody, I'm going to assume Peter is still alive until next season. Man don't kill Quinn @SHO_Homeland !!! I need him. • I know I said this when Brody left, but Homeland without Quinn is off my watch list. At least when Brody died, Quinn was around. What now!? What now, indeed. Showtime has already renewed "Homeland" for Season 6, so there are no worries that the show won't go on, but will you be there to watch what happens? FYI, TVLine shared the full text of Quinn's farewell note to Carrie: What did you think of the "Homeland" finale and will you be back for Season 6? Want more stuff like this? Channing Tatum Is Elsa From 'Frozen' in New 'Lip Sync Battle' Posted: Yeah, we wanna build a snowman, but we also wanna see Channing Tatum look magically "I just really hope our marriage isn't over after tonight," Channing says in the trailer, which promotes the husband vs. wife showdown. Jenna tells her hubby, "We're a house divided at the moment. We're going to war." Channing and Jenna met while making the dance movie "Step Up," and even though Chan is the bigger celebrity right now, Jenna is the real dance pro. This could be close ... unless the winner is determined by who looks the most ridiculous. Then it's definitely Chan's trophy. Just watch: The promo teases "a full hour of big performances and special guests," and it has already been confirmed that Beyoncé will be performing alongside Chan. With the power of Queen Bey and Queen Elsa, is there any way he can lose? Want more stuff like this? Steve Harvey Is Sorry for That Amazing Miss Universe Flub: 'I Feel Terrible' Posted: Oops! Last night's Miss Universe pageant turned into a car crash you couldn't turn away from, courtesy of a major mistake from host Steve Harvey. He read the name of the wrong winner, giving the title of Miss Universe to Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutiérrez, instead of Miss Philippines, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach. It was painful. It was embarrassing. And yet it was the first time we actually cared about a Miss Universe pageant. So instead of bragging, Donald Trump should be jealous. It wasn't even a quick mistake! As you can see in the cringe-worthy video below, Miss Colombia had the crown and the sash and the cheers from her Colombian supporters for over a minute before Steve Harvey reappeared to say "OK, folks, I have to apologize..." He did a lot of apologizing after the Sunday night show. Poor Miss Colombia looked mortified, but Miss Philippines was confused and then looked unsure of how to behave -- this is probably not how she pictured winning this pageant, as watched by millions around the world. Here's how it played out: And here are some of the reactions and memes that immediately followed the gaffe (yes, even Justin Bieber made fun of him):
Steve Harvey quickly apologized, but his initial apology misspelled both Colombia and Philippines so he deleted that and apologized again in a series of tweets:
It sounds like it really was an honest mistake, but the upside is that many people who never cared about Miss Universe or knew it still existed DO care now, thanks to rubber-necking. And Steve Harvey has plenty of defenders online, pointing out that it was just a mistake and he shouldn't get so much hate. So the only one to really lose was poor Miss Colombia. Sorry, girl! The 9 Best 'Star Wars: The Clone Wars' Storylines Ever Posted: %Slideshow-347639%In order to keep the prequel trilogy focused on Anakin's rise and fall, audiences did not see much of the actual Clone Wars -- minus some notable but brief scenes in "Revenge of the Sith." Over six seasons, "The Clone Wars" helped fill in those big blanks left by the "Star Wars" prequels, while introducing compelling new characters and fleshing out familiar ones. With "The Force Awakens" in theaters, let's revisit the best storylines from the show, now streaming on Netflix. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
J.K. Rowling Defends Casting of Black Actress as Hermione in 'Harry Potter' Play Posted: Mischief managed? J.K. Rowling shot down any critics who sniffed at a black actress being cast as Hermione Granger in the sequel play "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child," which picks up the story from after we left the now adult trio of Harry, Ron, and Hermione in the flash-forward of "Deathly Hallows." Rowling first re-tweeted news about the play's casting:
Here's the start of Pottermore's story: But then Rowling -- and the "Harry Potter" film cast -- were inundated with questions on how they felt about a non-white Hermione. Here's Rowling's response:
That is now Rowling's Pinned Tweet. And quoting text to support your argument is very Hermione of her! Rowling also tweeted casting defense from Matthew Lewis, aka the film's Neville Longbottom:
There were also questions about this Ron being ginger enough, but apparently ginger is a state of mind. Here's one argument:
Other fans are offering the logical defense that she could be going "white as a sheet" as the expression goes, when someone is terrified. But some people will inevitably see this as "PC" and "social justice" and "the end of the world" because it's not what they're used to, even if the author herself loves it. Solution: Don't go see the play! Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. %Slideshow-306460% This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
11 Saddest TV Deaths of 2015, Ranked From Boo Hoo to Gut-Wrenching Posted: %Slideshow-346665% George R.R. Martin isn't the only guy who likes to kill off characters (but, boy does he ever) -- a lot of shows besides "Game of Thrones" bid adieu to popular cast members this year. And why oh why did McDreamy have to die? Here are some of the saddest deaths of 2015. SPOILERS, obviously. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
