'The Force Awakens' Crosses $300 Million Mark, Set to Smash Christmas Records

Posted:

Star Wars Force Awakens"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" is flying through the box office at hyperspace-level speed.

The movie already set records for biggest domestic weekend ever and biggest Monday ever. Now, it's also got the record for biggest Tuesday ever, and the fastest movie to cross the $300 million mark. It took the latest "Star Wars" film just five days to do so, beating out the previous record holder, "Jurassic World," which needed eight days.

"The Force Awakens" raked in $37.3 million on Tuesday, and now has a global tally of $689.4 million. And the money-making extravaganza is far from over: Fandango estimates Friday's sales will top all past Christmas Day totals, and MovieTickets.com says "Star Wars" accounts for 83 percent of its Friday sales.

It could be a historic Christmas weekend at the box office. As Deadline notes, the last time Christmas was on a Friday, movies including "Avatar," "Sherlock Holmes," and "It's Complicated" made over $280 million total.

It should be a merry, Force-filled Christmas, indeed.

The 'Fifty Shades of Black' Red Band Trailer Is Every Shade of Nasty

Posted:

"Fifty Shades of Grey" gets f--ked every which way by Marlon Wayans in the new red band trailer for "Fifty Shades of Black." The "red band" status is probably from all the f-bombs and that n-bomb, plus there's the nastiness with smelling fingers, getting eaten out, going "balls deep," spitting into locks, passing around mothers, and flinging sticky underwear.

As one character puts it at the end, "F--k to the no. You need to find Jesus, that's what you can do!" It's less hot than hurl, but many viewers probably feel the same about the real "Fifty Shades."

This "outrageous comedy" parody stars Wayans as Mr. Black, but it also features Kali Hawk, Mike Epps, Andrew Bachelor, Affion Crockett, and -- this is odd -- Jane Seymour, Fred Willard, and Florence Henderson. Yes, Mrs. Brady signed up for a movie where a stripper f--ks a woman pregnant right on stage.

Watch the trailer:

"Fifty Shades of Black" opens January 29.

'Orange Is the New Black' Inmates Rob Santa in 'Twas a Night in Litchfield'

Posted:

If only Netflix would give us "Orange Is the New Black" Season 4 for Christmas. Sigh. The wait is going to be a bit longer for that, but Netflix did give us the holiday gift of the OITNB cast performing "'Twas a Night in Litchfield."

The two-and-a-half minute video is just as it sounds, a hilarious prison version of 'Twas the Night Before Christmas." As the inmates explain, they were settling down for a long beauty nap when "an old white dude" (no, not Jesus, Pennsatucky) and "eight little cute-ass reindeer" showed up. After that, the ladies "MAY have robbed and roughed up Saint Nick." But hey, when some random guy shows up you have to be prepared, right? It turns out he was bringing them books for the library, grass for the yard, eyeliner, tampons, and porn for the guards, among other treats.

Check it out:

"Orange is the New Black" only recently finished filming Season 4 and we're not expecting it to hit Netflix until probably June 2016. But hopefully we'll get some kind of trailer or first footage fairly soon into the new year.

Should 'Modern Family' Cast Miss Colombia as Gloria's Doppelganger?

Posted:

The 2015 Miss Universe PageantAnyone who watched the Miss Universe pageant -- even just the trainwreck final minutes -- had to notice that Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez looks a lot like Sofía Vergara. Like, they could be twins. That led to some "Modern Family" jokes on Twitter, and some casting suggestions:

The only problem with the sister idea is that Sofia's Gloria Pritchett already has a sister, Sonia, who was on the show.

Can they add another sister at this point? Gloria and Sonia have two brothers, so it might be funny to have Ariadna Gutierrez cameo as one of their wives. Or maybe Ariadna could just cameo as a new employee at Jay's company and he keeps mistaking her for Gloria or whatnot. There has to be something they can do, whether they make her Gloria's relative or not.

Sofia, who is Colombian, shared her support for Ariadna, who briefly had the title of Miss Universe until someone told Steve Harvey that he misread the card:

She is the queen either way. What do you think -- should "Modern Family" milk this opportunity, and give Miss Colombia a break after that sad finale, or would it be too gimmicky?

Will 'The Big Bang Theory' Season 10 Be 'the Ending Point'?

Posted:

They say all good things must come to an end, but there's no perfect equation for when you should end a good thing like "The Big Bang Theory." The CBS sitcom premiered in 2007 and is now in Season 9 as we head into 2016. It's still a ratings powerhouse -- it's the No. 1 comedy in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demo -- but in addition to the massive cast salaries, the latest episodes have hit several major milestones. Are they getting ready to say goodbye ... or just getting started? The Hollywood Reporter talked to the Powers That Be and it sounds like things could go either way.

THR asked showrunner Steve Molaro if producers were planning Season 10 as if it were the end of the line. Here's how he replied:

I think so. I can't speak to the future or on behalf of the cast or where we'll be then but it's certainly possible that it could go past that. The reality is that maybe season 10 is the ending point. The real answer is I don't know and all I can do right now is go episode to episode and try to make each one the best that we can. There's still so many episodes to go. Even if hypothetically season 10 was the end, I wouldn't be focusing on that yet. That seems like something that would be dealt with way down the line."

Co-creator Chuck Lorre seems to be of the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" mindset, telling THR:

I never imagined nine [seasons] and here we are. I'm not going to presume to know how many years this has because it's ridiculous for me to guess. It's already gone beyond my wildest dreams so anything beyond this ... as long as everybody is having a good time and we're making a show we're proud of ... then it's worth continuing."

Where do you stand on this? Each season of TBBT has about 24 episodes, so how many more seasons and episodes would you like to see before they wrap things up? Should they quit while they're ahead, so to speak, or keep it going for another 5-10 years, if everyone is up for it?

'My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2' Poster Shows Greeks Don't Change

Posted:

"People change. Greeks don't." That's the message atop the first poster for "My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2," and it lives up to its own mantra by recycling the basics of the 2002 movie poster for the 2016 sequel.

Star/writer Nia Vardalos tweeted the new movie poster this week, along with a little message about the returning cast:

Here's the poster for the original movie:

You see Nia's Toula and John Corbett's Ian over to the right in both posters, but in the new story their daughter joins them at center stage, since the sequel will focus -- in part -- on the teen's transition from high school to college.

"My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2" -- co-starring Lainie Kazan, Gia Carides, Joey Fatone, Elena Kampouris, Alex Wolff, and Louis Mandylor -- is scheduled for release on March 25, 2016. The naughty and nice first trailer came out in November, and you can rewatch it over here.

Kurt Russell Says Shooting 'Hateful Eight' Was Like 'Doing a Disney Movie'

Posted:

Two westerns in one year, both starring Kurt Russell?! So glad we live in such a golden age.

Earlier in the fall, Russell cowboy'd his way into the grizzly horror-western "Bone Tomahawk." Now, he's reuniting with his "Death Proof" director Quentin Tarantino for the hotly-anticipated "The Hateful Eight." In what plays out like a John Ford western by way of "Ten Little Indians," Russell stars as John "The Hangman" Ruth, an ill-tempered bounty hunter who, along with his bounty, finds himself in close quarters with some truly violent and untrusting folk.

Despite the film's excessive violence and gunplay, the former child star compared the shooting experience to, um, well, we'll let him explain:

"It's a bit like doing a Disney movie," Russell said. "[Doing] a Disney movie in the 60s -- It was a slightly different zeitgeist then. You're creating the bubble. The bubble can be this big or this small. You're creating it. Whether or not you're going to like it, it's the one you're creating. And with Quentin, you know -- you're in his bubble. You're in his world, doing what he needs to tell the story. He literally says 'That's what we're doing. He shows you the shot and says: 'That's what we're doing here.'"
Russell and the rest of the ensemble, which includes Samuel L. Jackson and scene-stealer Walton Goggins, would gather for coffee a half-hour everyday before shooting to discuss just how they were going to give their director what he needed to tell the story.

Their discussions were not just about choices made on the day, but also how those choices will affect multiple viewings down the line -- as Tarantino fans watch his films like they are the Zapruder film.

"I knew, I gotta get this tone right because it's too low, it's not fun enough. If it's too high, then it's not important enough. If it's [something else], it's not what Quentin is trying to get. So in rehearsing, I was trying to find that. And that took some doing."

Through that process, Russell zeroed-in on his character's unique John Wayne way of speaking -- which wasn't the first time the actor did the voice for Tarantino. He rocked a Wayne drawl in a key scene from "Death Proof," which lead to its resurrection here.

"When I did the reading, I did a full-on thing with it, right? Which came from something I'd done in 2007 on 'Death Proof.' So, that's the kind of thing with Quentin. He knew what I was doing. He remembered what I did then and then he kind of incorporated that into this character."

Stuntman Mike's John Wayne impression wasn't the only character from Russell's past that surfaced when trying to find Ruth's voice.

"Jack Burton from 'Big Trouble in Little China' started to come in," Russell revealed, noting that that's what happens in the early days of finding a character. Eventually, Russell said, "you throw it all away. That was the fun of trying to create a character that I would like to make memorable for the movie."

Judging by early reviews, Russell has made quite the impression.

"Hateful Eight" hits theaters in limited release (in 70mm) on Christmas Day. It opens wide Dec. 31.

Marlene King: I Did Not Say 'Pretty Little Liars' Will End After Season 7

Posted:

"Pretty Little Liars" fans are still waiting to see the five-year time jump play out, when Season 6 returns on January 12, but creator I. Marlene King is now clarifying some quotes about the potential end of the series after Season 7.

PLL Season 6 and Season 7 were renewed together, and it's not clear if there will be a Season 8 or even a movie, but those ideas are on the table. However, when Marlene recently spoke with Variety, there was some confusion about what she meant by ending something at Season 7, so she took to Twitter to clarify.

First, here's that section of the Variety interview, which was headlined "'Pretty Little Liars' Will End After Season 7, Says Creator":

Now, with a revamped storyline on the horizon — the new episodes kick off the a five-year time jump, resulting in a more mature "Pretty Little Liars" world — King says she would like for Season 7 to be the last.

"I think that this story when we're back will end next year at the at end of Season 7," King told Variety this week when asked if the time jump gives the series more legs to continue. Then asked, "So you definitely want it to end at the end of Season 7, and don't want it to go beyond that?" King replied: "Correct."

Despite King's statement, ABC Family has not announced any formal plans for Season 7 to be the last, and has not made any decisions beyond that.

But apparently that was just a quote misunderstanding, because Marlene clarified that she was talking about the end of a particular storyline, not the entire series:

Which is not to say that PLL won't end after Season 7, that's just not what she was announcing. Meanwhile, TVLine offered some new Season 6B scoop on Hanna's new fiancé Jordan, who is going to make life tough for Team Haleb.

Do you think Season 7 should be the end or do you hope the story continues into Season 8 and beyond? Maybe it depends on the quality of the Season 6B storylines?

Here's Why Bridget Jones Is So Much Thinner in 'Baby'

Posted:

Renée Zellweger can never seem to find the Goldilocks zone when it comes to her looks, at least to the general public. When she was first cast in "Bridget Jones's Diary," she was considered too thin to play Helen Fielding's (also British) character. In the sequel, there was talk that maybe she had gained too much weight. In the past year or so, there's been a lot of chatter about the actress's face not quite looking the same. And now the cast of "Bridget Jones's Baby" is on the cover of Entertainment Weekly, with a story explaining why Renee's Bridget is so skinny in the new movie, which comes out September 16, 2016.

Here's what director Sharon Maguire told Entertainment Weekly:

We all really loved the notion that Bridget, 15 years on, had finally reached her ideal weight ... somewhere between a UK size 10 or 12 ... but still hadn't solved any of her issues about love and loneliness. I think that one of the reasons the first film worked was not just because of the comedy but because people identified with Bridget's fear of loneliness. It's a universal fear. It's still a prominent theme in the character's journey even in the third film, and an integral point of access for the audience to empathize with Bridget."

Having Bridget be a little bit heavier was also a way for people to identify with her, since most of us are closer to Old School Bridg than New School. But having her finally reach her goal weight right before gaining pregnancy weight offers its own comedic potential. Plus, if Bridget is still Bridget, fans should still love her at any size.

EW explained that, in this round, Bridget is a successful producer of a serious news program when she discovers she's pregnant. However, she doesn't know if the father is her off-and-on again lover Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) or newbie Jack Qwant (Patrick Dempsey). It's kind of sad to think that Bridget and Mark are still off-and-on ... but at least he's not dead in this version. If they pull a Maury with the paternity test, we're gonna have to root for Team Mark.
