Posted: In the middle of "Star Wars" fever, only Steven Spielberg could find a way to steal some of the attention. The first trailer for "The BFG," the filmmaker's highly-anticipated adaptation of Roald Dahl's classic children's book about the titular character dropped Wednesday and the internet liked the sh** out of it. While it was just a tease, it definitely piqued our interest and raised our expectations. Because the last time Spielberg worked with the late screenwriter Melissa Mathison on a family film, the end result was "E.T." So why is "The BFG" such a BFD? Here are all the things you need to know about one of 2016's must-see films. So what does "BFG" stand for? Tell your gamer friends who still play waaaay too much "Doom" that, no, it doesn't stand for "Big Effing Gun." It stands for "Big Friendly Giant." Cool - got it. Now, what is "The BFG?" It's Dahl's 1981 award-winning children's book, which is based on a short story from Dahl's 1975 book "Danny, the Champion of the World." It's about a little girl named Sophie, who meets the BFG and teams up with him -- and the Queen of England -- on a mission to stop CEGs (Children-Eating Giants). Wait -- what? Yup. So a little girl -- Well, an orphan actually. Okay, so an orphan teams up with the Queen of England to stop giants who eat kids? That happens?! Of all the things in that sentence, an orphan and the Queen of England are what you trip over? *Blinks, shuffles feet* Fine. You're right. Have they made a movie about this before? Nope. But, it was adapted into animated film for TV in 1989. It was also adapted for the stage in 2009. Who is playing the giant? Mark Rylance, who played a Soviet spy in Spielberg's Cold War thriller "Bridge of Spies." The director is using mo-cap to bring Rylance's performance to life. Awesome. So, you've sold me. When can I see the movie? "The BFG" arrives in theaters July 1, 2016. Watch the trailer below. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Idris Elba Could Play the Gunslinger in 'The Dark Tower': Report Posted: Here's some juicy casting news: According to a new report, the long-gestating (and long-troubled) big screen adaptation of Stephen King's "The Dark Tower" series may have just found its leading man, and it's a high-profile actor that's been in the news a lot lately. Deadline has the scoop that producers have identified Idris Elba as their top choice to play Roland Deschain, known as The Gunslinger in King's books. Elba would face off against would-be antagonist Matthew McConaughey, who's being eyed to play the villain, Randall Flagg, a.k.a. The Man in Black. As with all things "Dark Tower," nothing should be considered official just yet, since this project has been in the works for years, and is now at its third studio, Sony, after false starts at both Universal and Warner Bros. The ambitious scope of the series seems to be what's holding things up, since filmmakers ideally would like to transform King's seven books into several feature films as well as a TV series that would run in between the theatrical outings, a tricky release strategy that would require serious time commitment from its stars and producers. So could Elba fit the bill? He's been red-hot lately, thanks to the awards season love he's been getting for "Beasts of No Nation," as well as his beloved turn in BBC series "Luther," and the much buzzed-about rumor that he could be tapped as the next James Bond. And his acting chops in both action and drama certainly would lend themselves well to the meaty role of Roland. Would he be willing to spend so much time on one project, or is he better off seeking other opportunities in the years that it would no doubt take to bring "The Dark Tower" to life? According to TheWrap, Elba is currently in "early talks" for the part, and McConaughey's rumored involvement seems to have played a large part in that. The trade notes that "the two actors are keen to work together," and Elba reportedly passed on starring in Universal's "The Mummy" reboot (which may or may not feature Tom Cruise) because he "was waiting for McConaughey's talks to progress before entertaining the idea" of joining "The Dark Tower." Of course, McConaughey's involvement has yet to be confirmed by the actor himself, and "early talks" don't always amount to much in Hollywood. It would be safe to wait until someone at Sony says something on the record before we get our hopes up about this collaboration, but still, we think Elba (and McConaughey) would be awesome in this role. Stay tuned. [via: Deadline, TheWrap] Photo credit: Getty Images %Slideshow-100964% This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
The First 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2' Trailer Is Full of Fan Favorites Posted: The filmmakers behind the recently-rebooted "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" flicks had large shoes to fill following the financial success and cult status of the original '90s version of the series. And while 2014's first foray into a new version of the TMNT gang produced middling results, the upcoming sequel looks to preserve its forebears' legacy thanks to a new trailer that's equal parts goofy, cheesy, action-packed, and -- dare we say -- awesome-looking. The promo reintroduces us to the titular heroes -- Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Raphael all get some sweet shots wielding their signature weapons -- while also bringing in a bunch of new elements and characters that are making their first appearances this century, but should be intimately familiar to older fans. Baddies Bebop and Rocksteady, hockey stick-loving vigilante Casey Jones (Stephen Amell, who gets his flirt on with Megan Fox's April O'Neil), and the Turtle Van all have moments in the spotlight, as the Turtles must once again band together to save New York. "What are you, superheroes?" a skeptical Laura Linney (yes, that Laura Linney), playing some sort of law enforcement officer, asks the gang. "Just four brothers who hate bullies, and love this city," Raph replies. The addition of Run-D.M.C.'s "It's Tricky" also adds some levity to the proceedings, and we have a feeling that that's exactly what filmmakers intended. More than the first flick, "TMNT 2" is giving us some serious '90s cartoon vibes, and that's exactly the right tone for this oddball series. Here's hoping the rest of the film lives up to the promise of the trailer. Will Smith's Deadshot May Star in Ben Affleck's Solo Batman Movie Posted: Will Smith has yet to make his debut as Deadshot in next summer's "Suicide Squad," and already there's talk of him reprising the role in another film. According to Latino Review, Smith may appear in Ben Affleck's upcoming standalone Batman movie, and it may be more than just a cameo. "If Deadshot joins the Bat in the movie, it will be for a 'major role' for a 'The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly' scenario," the site reports, referencing the classic western that featured the unlikely partnership between three gunslingers of varying degrees of morality. Latino Review notes that Smith is eager to play Deadshot again, and since he's already "signed on for multiple appearances" as the villain in other future films, he "wants to be an ongoing part of Warner's and DC's plans." Co-headlining a solo "Batman" flick would certainly achieve that goal, and with Warner Bros. striving to imitate Marvel's massive MCU success, there should be no shortage of opportunities for Smith should he want to sign up for another flick. Of course, the site says -- and we echo -- that this idea is still in its infancy, and there are no concrete plans in place just yet for this team-up. Such a scenario no doubt hinges on the performance of both "Suicide Squad" and "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," and we won't have the final verdict on either until summer 2016. But the prospect of seeing A-listers Affleck and Smith go toe-to-toe is an intriguing one, and we're eager to see if this rumor pans out. Stay tuned. 7 Holiday TV Episodes and Specials That Made Us Say 'WTF?' Posted: %Slideshow-346730% The holiday themed TV special or episode is a time-honored tradition of the Christmas season. 2016 Golden Globes Nominations: Snubs and Surprises Posted: If you're looking at this morning's Golden Globe movie nominations and asking yourself, "Wha...?", you're not alone. It's not that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's list was so full of surprises -- though there were a few. It's more that the HFPA, like many other awards groups this season, was especially fond of movies most audiences have yet to see -- either because they haven't been in theaters yet or were small, independent films that didn't find much of an audience earlier this year. The biggest hits on the list are "The Martian," with three nominations, and "Mad Max: Fury Road," with two. Otherwise, by sheer number of nominations, the Globe front-runner would have to be lesbian romance "Carol" (pictured), nominated in five categories -- one more than the number of theaters in North America currently showing the film. Close behind are four-time nominees "The Big Short" and "The Revenant" (not yet released) and "Steve Jobs" (flopped). Quentin Tarantino's "The Hateful Eight" (three nominations) and the Jennifer Lawrence-led "Joy" (two nods) also have yet to be released. One of the bigger surprises is the prominence of "The Martian" in the comedy/musical categories. Did you think the space epic was a comedy or a musical? This is one of those weird cases of category fraud that occasionally plague the Globes. A couple years ago, it was "The Tourist," the Johnny Depp-Angelina Jolie thriller, that inexplicably turned up in the comedy category, perhaps coincidentally after distributor Sony winded and dined the Globe voters. Granted, "Martian" is likely to be a big player at the Oscars and other awards shows this season. But competition is always stiffer among dramas than comedies, especially since none of the other major awards groups split comedy films into their own category. That the Globes do, however, allows them to double the number of lead-role movie stars they get to invite. It also results in head-scratcher nominations like Al Pacino in "Danny Collins" and Mark Ruffalo in "Infinitely Polar Bear," two little-seen movies from earlier in the year that will certainly not be recognized by any other awards group. One of the biggest snubs? Denying acting noms to the cast of "Spotlight" -- even though the movie is generally considered a front-runner for Best Picture at the Oscars, the Screen Actors Guild awards, and in the Globes' Best Drama category. (Globe voters also nominated it for Best Director and Screenplay.) Then again, the SAGs, whose nominations were announced yesterday, also put "Spotlight" on their list for Best Ensemble (their equivalent of Best Picture) without nominating any individual members from it except Rachel McAdams. Cartoon fans will probably be miffed that "Minions" was left off the list of Best Animated Feature nominees, apparently in favor of "Shaun the Sheep Movie." But remember, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association members are entertainment journalists with international roots, and "Shaun" was a big hit everywhere but in America. Otherwise, there weren't as many surprising inclusions in the Globes' movie categories as there were in its TV categories -- save for the questionable performance of Lady Gaga getting a nod for "American Horror Story." Four of the six comedy series nods went to streaming sites, including Amazon (a big winner last year for "Transparent") and new-to-the-awards-game Hulu. HFPA voters were also first to recognize this summer's cult hit, USA's "Mr. Robot," and the CW's "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend" star and co-creator Rachel Bloom. With movies, however, there's a clean slate every year and little chance for the Globe voters to play trendsetters. They did manage to crown a new starlet in Alicia Vikander, nominated for both "The Danish Girl" and "Ex Machina." There's some category confusion with her, too. The SAGs nominated her for Supporting Actress for "Danish Girl," but here, she's a lead. Same with Cate Blanchett's "Carol" co-star Rooney Mara. There were no nominations this year for such early-touted awards-hopeful films as "Black Mass," "Macbeth" (Fassbender fans in the HFPA either preferred his "Steve Jobs" performance or haven't seen his Shakespeare adaptation yet), or "Sicario" (even though it's one of the year's biggest indie hits). One more thing: This year also saw a virtual whiteout among the Globe's film acting contenders. Out of 30 slots, only two went to an actor of color (drama lead Will Smith, in "Concussion," and supporting actor Idris Elba, in "Beasts of No Nation"). Sylvester Stallone earned a well-deserved supporting nod for "Creed," but star Michael B. Jordan was snubbed. No one from "Straight Outta Compton" was nominated. (At the SAGs, they nominated it for Best Ensemble but picked none of the individual actors.) The HFPA's TV acting nominations tell a different story; they're a much more diverse group that includes such performers as Taraji P. Henson ("Empire"), Viola Davis ("How to Get Away With Murder"), and Rami Malek ("Mr. Robot"). Which only shows that, when it comes to telling stories about more than just a select group of people, even the best movies have a long way to go in order to catch up to TV. %Slideshow-345254% This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

The 14 Best Ron Howard Movies, Ranked Posted: %Slideshow-346741% Do audiences take Ron Howard for granted? He's been an A-list director for more than 30 years now, a status that even recent flops like "The Dilemma" haven't tarnished. Maybe we're just used to him routinely turning out glossy blockbuster fare like "The Da Vinci Code," movies that are competent and well-made but that could have been shot by anyone. Where Howard really shines, however, is in far-flung adventures and triumph-over-long-odds dramas. His new movie, "In the Heart of the Sea" (opening December 11), an account of the 19th-century whaling-ship disaster that inspired "Moby-Dick," ought to fill the bill. Meanwhile, here's a look back at the highlights of Howard's directing career. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Michelle Obama's Goofy College Rap Video Earns a Solid B+ Posted: What are you going to do after high school? Don't answer "just hang out, I guess" or Jay Pharoah of "Saturday Night Live" and FLOTUS herself, Michelle Obama, may show up and rap at you. Actually, that's a great reason to say "hang out," 'cause this video is awesome. CollegeHumor's new music video is a 2-minute ad for a college education, but it could double as an SNL digital short that just happens to include the First Lady and scenes at the White House. "If you want to fly jets, you should go to college. Reach high and cash checks, fill your head with knowledge. If you want to watch paint, don't go to college. But for everything else you should go to college." It's a pretty funny video, but there are no tips on how to PAY for college, which can be a sticking point. Maybe the next POTUS is supposed meant to rap those suggestions. This isn't even the first time Michelle Obama has rapped. You may recall her skills at the mic when promoting healthy foods. The Washington Post also curated other FLOTUS rap moments, because that's what real journalists do with their college educations. Want more stuff like this? What 'Historic' Thing Happens in the 'Survivor Cambodia: Second Chance' Finale? Posted: CBS's "Survivor: Cambodia" -- aka Season 31, aka "Second Chance" -- is ending its fantastic run on Wednesday, December 16, with a two-hour finale and one-hour reunion show (where probably only Spencer and maybe two other people will be allowed to speak). At the end of the penultimate episode, Jeff Probst teased that, during the finale, something would happen for the first time in 31 seasons. What is it? We have a guess, but first here's more from Jeff to Entertainment Weekly:

Dear Golden Globes, Gina Rodriguez and America Ferrera Are Two Different People Posted: D'oh! Add another awkward incident to the file of Celebrities Mistaken For Other Celebrities. The latest oopsie happened this morning during the 2016 Golden Globe Award nominations announcement, when "Jane the Virgin" star Gina Rodriguez was listed as one of the celebs reading off the nominees ... when it was really "Ugly Betty" alum America Ferrera. Well, we all make mistakes. The gaffes were tweeted out by the official Golden Globe Awards account, and even copied to Gina Rodriguez, before being deleted. Here are two screenshots:
For the record, this is Gina Rodriguez: It's always kinda sad, but also kinda funny, when these things happen. "Quantico" star Priyanka Chopra was recently confused with another Indian pageant winner and tweeted that "all brown people don't look the same." But it happens to ginger people, too: There was even a song made for Bryce Dallas Howard to let her emphasize "I Am Not Jessica Chastain," and "Game of Thrones" star Sophie Turner had to tweet to E! that she was not the red-headed actress they had identified on TV. Hollywood just likes to cast spare celebs. For example, if (heaven forbid) something were to happen to Javier Bardem, they have Jeffrey Dean Morgan on standby. Same for Tom Hardy and Jai Courtney, etc. Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. %Slideshow-325485% This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Watch the Wild First Trailer for 'The Legend of Tarzan' Posted: Yesterday, we were graced with the first two steamy photos from "The Legend of Tarzan." Not long after that, Warner Bros. dropped the first trailer for the movie, which comes out in July 2016. This Tarzan movie was directed by "Harry Potter" helmer David Yates, and it stars Alexander Skarsgård in the lead role, with Margot Robbie as Jane. But the first person we see in the action-packed trailer is Christoph Waltz, who looks poised to play still another baddie. As we see images of the lush, perpetually drenched (bring your Frizz-Ease) jungle, we're told, "The jungle consumes everything. It preys on the old, the sick, the wounded. It preys on the weak, but never the strong."Here's the Warner Bros. film synopsis: "It has been years since the man once known as Tarzan (Skarsgård) left the jungles of Africa behind for a gentrified life as John Clayton III, Lord Greystoke, with his beloved wife, Jane (Robbie) at his side. Now, he has been invited back to the Congo to serve as a trade emissary of Parliament, unaware that he is a pawn in a deadly convergence of greed and revenge, masterminded by the Belgian, Captain Leon Rom (Waltz). But those behind the murderous plot have no idea what they are about to unleash." The movie also stars Samuel L. Jackson, who has a funny scene with Skarsgard at the end of the trailer. 'Star Wars' Prequels Stars: Where Are They Now? Posted: %Slideshow-341343% While we wait in an anticipatory lather for "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" to open on December 18, our thoughts turn to the last time we got so excited for a new set of "Star Wars" movies. The year was 1999 and fans camped out for "The Phantom Menace" -- only to have their hopes dashed by the unwelcome comic relief of Jar Jar Binks. The other two prequels were marginally better, but the majority of fans agree, they can't hold a candle to the original trilogy. What has the cast of the prequels (and their special set of skills) been up to since then? Saving the world, winning an Oscar, and singing their hearts out, for starters. But for young Jake Lloyd, it was a scarring experience that he would rather forget. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Best of Late Night TV: Borat Has Sexy Time With Jimmy Kimmel, Amy Poehler's Truth or Truth Posted: If you're like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don't worry; we've got you covered. Here's the best of what happened last night on late night. He's back! Borat showed up to "Jimmy Kimmel Live" -- "My name-a Borat, I like porno" -- to warn everyone against actor Sacha Baron Cohen, and premiere the latest trailer for Cohen's movie, "The Brothers Grimsby." Borat also had a bit of sexy time with Jimmy's "Jimmy Kimmel," explaining that -- in his country, Kazakhstan -- "Kimmel" is the name for a lady's "vagine" and "Jimmy" means "much hair." "For example, my wife, she has a very Jimmy Kimmel." Haha. And did you know Donald Trump isn't real, he's a Sacha Baron Cohen character, "a parody of a rich American racist"? That makes sense. When Amy Poehler and Jimmy Fallon get together, magic happens -- even in the commercial breaks. Wednesday, December 9 on "The Tonight Show," Amy talked about "Sisters," her new movie with Tina Fey, but during the commercial break she came up with a great new fake movie called "Chuck and Carrie Are Not Married." The story of how that came about is great, and you should watch it before watching "Truth or Truth," which is a version of Truth or Dare where there is only one option. Chuck is referenced again in that game, which is won by Jimmy with the answer to Amy's query, "Where is someplace you've never had sex?" Answer: "My 20s." Ba dum dum! "Downton Abbey" Season 6, the final season, is starting soon on PBS and three cast members were on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" to illustrate why the show is so successful: British accents. (Yesterday it was saying things in French, today it's British accents. Stephen has found a theme.) Stephen gave Michelle Dockery, Hugh Bonneville, and Allen Leech an actual scene from the show and they each read their parts in broad American accents. Michelle went full Valley girl but Allen (Branson) owned the whole thing with his, like, surfer frat dude voice. It's killer, bruh! Here's another great round of "What Conan's Watching," with new TV blurb descriptions for shows like "Empire," "NCIS," "Dr. Phil," "The Good Wife," "Castle," and -- hmm, how did this get in there? -- Andy Richter's new show. Tyler Oakley just returned from shooting "The Amazing Race" and James Corden tried to get some spoilers out of him: Want more stuff like this?
