Kurt Russell May Play Chris Pratt's Father in 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2' Posted: A major star may soon join "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2," with multiple trades reporting that Kurt Russell is being eyed for a big part in the upcoming sequel. TheWrap was the first to report that Russell has been pegged as Marvel's top choice to play the father of Chris Pratt's Peter Quill. According to the site, Russell hasn't been offered the part yet, and hasn't even read a script yet, so this development is still in the infancy stage. Other trades chimed in with similar reports, with The Hollywood Reporter backing up TheWrap's statements. THR adds that "both Marvel and director James Gunn as well as Russell seem optimistic the outcome will be positive." Peter Quill's search for his long-lost alien father will be a focal point of "Guardians 2," so this is a meaty role should Russell accept it. But we'll have to wait awhile before we know if this news is legit, since Marvel is notoriously tight-lipped when it comes to casting, and Gunn has officially sworn off commenting on rumors surrounding the flick. Still, it's an exciting prospect. We'll keep our fingers crossed. "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" hits theaters on May 5, 2017. Here's What Happened to Emma Thompson's 'Love Actually' Character Posted: "Love Actually" has the distinction of being both one of our favorite rom-coms and one of our favorite holiday movies, though for every smile-inducing, heartwarming plotline, there are a few bummers, too. One of those centered around Emma Thompson's character, Karen, who realized that her husband, Harry (Alan Rickman), was cheating on her with his hot new assistant. But what happened to Karen and Harry after the credits rolled? Now, fans have some clarity about the ambiguous fate of the fictional married couple, who appeared to still be together at the film's end, despite Karen's devastating discovery. Emma Freud, who served as the flick's script editor (and is also married to its director, Richard Curtis), live-tweeted a screening of "Love Actually" earlier this week, and revealed a bunch of behind-the-scenes info about the movie, including the state of Karen and Harry's union. First, Freud confirmed that yes, Harry did indeed cheat on Karen, instead of just simply carrying on a flirtation (albeit one that involved an expensive gold necklace) with his assistant. And then, the editor clarified that the couple remained married, writing, "they stay together but home isn't as happy as it once was." Though that seems a bit obvious from the way the flick ended, we can understand why fans may have imagined that Karen kicked Harry to the curb. And we can't help but wish for something better for Karen -- like, say, running off with Liam Neeson's character instead. Claudia Schiffer's cameo may have been clever, but we bet those besties would have made a great couple. If only. Justin Lin on 'Star Trek Beyond': It's Not Marvel's 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Posted: "Marvel does their own thing, and they do it great -- 'Trek' is something different." Director Justin Lin is quick to distinguish his newest film, next summer's "Star Trek Beyond," from that other popular franchise about heroes in space -- especially when fans drew comparisons to "Guardians" before and after the launch of the film's first trailer, which was released this week. But during a recent trailer presentation event, what similarities Lin did acknowledge were between "Trek" and his other franchise. The teaser, which emphasizes the film's considerable action, features a callback of sorts to the mid-air catch from Lin's "Fast Six," swapping out Dom and Letty for Kirk and a new alien badass played by Sofia Boutella ("Kingsman"). "I am who I am," the director grinned. He also seems pretty happy with the final cut of the teaser, which went through several iterations before settling on the final cut. The 93 second tease showcases key footage we saw being shot while on a set visit in August, a scene featuring the crew of the Enterprise struggling to recover from the destruction of their ship while licking their wounds/plotting next steps on an alien world. The teaser offers glimpses of this alien planet, as well as the vessel (likely Federation) that our unsettled crew board for refuge. (The name of that ship? The Franklin, according to the patch on the arm of Spock's new mission jacket.) Moviefone recently sat down with the director to discuss fan reactions to the trailer, the big set pieces it hinges on (blowing up the Enterprise!), the reveal of Idris Elba's very pissed-off new villain and what "Beyond" has in store for fans. Here are the highlights: Revealing Idris Elba's Villain That alien that looks like it belongs on "Babylon 5," the one that gets its close-up in the teaser (pictured)? That's Idris Elba's character, Krall. And contrary to popular internet rumors, he is obviously not a Klingon. But he is a villain that Lin promises will have both a swarm of stabby ship and a unique philosophy behind his assault on Kirk and the Enterprise crew. "He's a character that has a very distinct philosophy," Lin teased. And it is a philosophy that conflicts violently with that of the Federation, prompting Krall to growl the trailer's best line: "This is where the frontier pushes back!" Krall's reptilian look required at least four hours to apply to Elba, as the character represents a new race never before seen in the "Star Trek" universe. In fact, as we learned on set, "Beyond" aims to diversify the Trek universe with a very large and unique canvas full of citizens representing the "strange new worlds" Trek prides itself on exploring. Speaking of exploration... Why the Movie Is Called "Star Trek Beyond" Lin revealed that co-writer and actor Simon Pegg came up with the title, which is tethered to the plot and the five-year mission the Enterprise crew have been on for almost three years. The title also stems from Lin's initial discussions with producer J.J. Abrams, who encouraged Lin to make the project his own -- to "go and be bold." The more the filmmakers talked about what the story should be, the more they kept saying "let's keep pushing," according to Lin. And that is when Pegg locked in on the title "Star Trek Beyond." The Enterprise Gets Her Ass Kicked... Again For the second film in a row, the Federation flagship gets beaten up - bad. But this time, the ship follows a similar fate to that of the Enterprise in the last Part III, "Search for Spock" -- being completely destroyed. Lin told us when the attack on Enterprise happens -- and it is occurs not when you expect. In "Search," Kirk used his skills as a great tactician by sacrificing his ship to save his best friend, Spock, who just came back from the dead. When asked if the ship's fate is tied to this series finally showing off Kirk's combat skills, Lin didn't really answer. But he did say that the attack will subvert expectations, especially when it comes to the aforementioned swarm of ships that cause her destruction. The idea of a swarm of ships attacking Enterprise draws from modern day warfare to a degree, where it's small cells going on the offensive instead of one massive unit. "'Star Trek' has a very 1960s sensibility of who has the bigger ship usually wins, right? And if you look at it, the attack, these ships are 40 feet long. [But in our movie] there's like 4,000 of them. And so I think even in the way they're being encountered, and how people are coming, it's -- you can't help but, I mean, we live in a world that is ever evolving. And I think that that's always made 'Star Trek' sci-fi great is when you're able to at least acknowledge what's happening today." Find out the fate of the Enterprise crew when "Beyond" hits theaters July 22, 2016. %Slideshow-347056% This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Tina Fey Reveals Colin Quinn Called Her the C-Word at 'SNL' Posted: It's part of "30 Rock" lore that the episode "The C Word," in which Lutz (John Lutz) uses the titular terrible epithet in reference to Liz Lemon (Tina Fey), was inspired by an actual encounter between Fey and a previously-unnamed male writer on the "Saturday Night Live" staff. Now, Fey has revealed his identity, but says they've long since buried the hatchet over the offensive incident. In an interview with Howard Stern in promotion of her new movie, "Sisters," Fey said that it was former Weekend Update anchor Colin Quinn who used that horrible word during a heated (and one-sided) phone call while she was the head writer on "SNL." "I was trying to help him with a show that he was working on, and I think his anxiety about the writing of the show spilled over," Fey told Stern about the incident. "'Cause It was very random. I was like, 'What?!' He left me a message and he said that. ... I couldn't even guess why. Usually, if someone calls you that, you're like, 'I know what I did.'" But according to the actress, the two have long since patched things up. Fey said she even asked Quinn several times to appear on "30 Rock," though he turned her down. And they recently ran into each other at the "SNL" 40th anniversary celebration, Fey told Stern, "and we're good." "I love him so much," Fey said of the actor. Quinn later took to Twitter to confirm Fey's account, adding that he was in the wrong in the situation and had apologized for his hurtful word(s). We're glad Quinn saw the error of his ways. At least we got a great episode of television out of the awkwardness. [via: The Howard Stern Show] %Slideshow-346734% This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Jennifer Lawrence & Amy Schumer Want to Wear the Same Dress to the Golden Globes Posted: Jennifer Lawrence may be known for her clumsiness at awards shows and on red carpets, but this time, she's hoping to commit a faux pas on purpose. The Oscar-winning actress revealed in a recent interview that she and her new BFF Amy Schumer both want to wear the same dress to the Golden Globes, and Lawrence is planning on asking fashion house Dior (of which she's the face) to create two identical custom gowns for the stars. "We're going to try to figure out to wear the exact same thing," Lawrence told E!. "That's my mission. I really want us to wear the same thing." The stunt should be hilarious if the two actresses can pull it off, but it's stemming from more than just a desire to be cheeky on the red carpet: Lawrence and Schumer are both nominated for Best Actress in a Comedy at the Globes, and are going head-to-head for the same prize. The surprise nod for Schumer (up for her performance in film debut "Trainwreck") has inspired some (not-so-heated) competition between the pals, who both jokingly said in recent interviews that they were ending their friendship over it. "It's really every woman for herself at this point, and I don't want her to kind of get in my head, you know?" Schumer told Entertainment Weekly. Our fingers are crossed that this works out. After all, we're suckers for funny red carpet gags. [via: E!, Entertainment Weekly] Photo credit: Getty Images %Slideshow-316028% This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Joseph Gordon-Levitt Dressed as Yoda for the 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Premiere Posted: It's no secret that many Hollywood stars are obsessed with "Star Wars," and that was apparent Monday night when dozens of celebs showed up for the world premiere of "The Force Awakens" in Los Angeles. But while most opted for their red carpet finest, Joseph Gordon-Levitt decided to take a different approach, dressing as a classic character from the series in a hilarious DIY costume. Gordon-Levitt showed up at the event as Yoda, the wise, pint-size Jedi master who first encounters Luke Skywalker back in Episode V, "The Empire Strikes Back." Though we don't know yet whether or not he'll appear in "The Force Awakens," Gordon-Levitt decided to invite Yoda to the proceedings anyway, painting his face and neck bright green, donning a Jedi robe (which looked suspiciously like a bathrobe), and wearing green pajama pants printed with Dr. Seuss's Grinch. Maybe he got confused and thought it was a "Star Wars"-themed sleepover? Whatever the reason for the actor's sartorial choices, we're loving his ensemble. Gordon-Levitt is a big "Star Wars" fan (he told Cinema Blend earlier this fall that he had begged "Episode VIII" director Rian Johnson to cast him in the flick), and that's certainly apparent from his gloriously geeked-out look last night. 'Star Wars' Original Trilogy Stars: Where Are They Now? Posted: %Slideshow-347364% Amid all the spaceships, blasters, and droids, it's easy to forget that the "Star Wars" saga takes place in the distant past. But the appearances of Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, and Carrie Fisher in the new "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" serve as a potent reminder of the passage of time. After all, it's been more than 38 years since we first saw them in the original trilogy. Here's what the stars of the original trilogy have been up to since we first saw them a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Leonardo DiCaprio Has Had a Lot of Near-Death Experiences Posted: The shoot for Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's upcoming frontier epic "The Revenant" was notoriously difficult, involving months of sub-zero conditions, hypothermia, animal carcasses, and raw bison liver. But while star Leonardo DiCaprio has said that the flick was easily the most challenging shoot of his career, he's had a few intense encounters in the past that prepared him for literally any death-defying scenario that life can throw his way. In an interview with Wired, DiCaprio discussed his multiple brushes with his mortality, telling the magazine, "My friends have named me the person they least want to do extreme adventures with, because I always seem to be very close to being part of a disaster. If a cat has nine lives, I think I've used a few." And just what, exactly, has Leo encountered over the years? Well, first there was that infamous shark incident, which DiCaprio described last year, and detailed again for Wired: "A great white jumped into my cage when I was diving in South Africa. Half its body was in the cage, and it was snapping at me. ... I sort of fell down to the bottom and tried to lie flat. The great white took about five or six snaps an arm's length away from my head. The guys there said that has never happened in the 30 years they'd been doing it." Whoa. What else? "Then there was this Delta Airlines flight to Russia. I was in business class, and an engine blew up in front of my eyes. ... I was sitting there looking out at the wing, and the entire wing exploded in a fireball. ... It was crazy. They shut all the engines off for a couple of minutes, so you're just sitting there gliding with absolutely no sound, and nobody in the plane was saying anything. It was a surreal experience. They started the engines back up, and we did an emergency landing at JFK." Jeez. Is there really more? "The other one was the skydiving incident. It was a tandem dive. We pulled the first chute. That was knotted up. The gentleman I was with cut it free. We did another free fall for like another 5, 10 seconds. I didn't even think about the extra chute, so I thought we were just plummeting to our death. He pulled the second, and that was knotted up too. He just kept shaking it and shaking it in midair, as all my friends were, you know, what felt like half a mile above me, and I'm plummeting toward earth. [Laughs.] And he finally unravels it in midair. The fun part was when he said, "You're probably going to break your legs on the way down, because we're going too fast now." So after you see your whole life flash in front of your eyes—twice—he says, "Oh, your legs are going to get broken too." ... [W]e did, like, this barrel roll. We got bruised up, but no broken legs." Wow. He may just be right about that whole "nine lives" thing. DiCaprio has been campaigning pretty hard for an Oscar for "The Revenant," and honestly, we can't say we blame him. Aside from the fact that it's truly his time to finally snag a little golden guy, it also makes sense that he's a bit desperate -- apparently, he's always just moments from death, and we'd hate to see him go before earning Oscar glory. Do the right thing, Academy voters. [via: Wired] Photo credit: Getty Images for Screen Actors Guild Foundation %Slideshow-58947% This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
'Heat': 11 Things You (Probably) Don't Know About Michael Mann's Crime Epic Posted: "Heat" is arguably everyone's favorite Michael Mann movie. It's the source of a rare Robert De Niro/Al Pacino summit, one of the most gripping cops-and-robbers thrillers ever made, and a quintessential Los Angeles movie. Yet, when it opened 20 years ago (on December 15, 1995), it went unheralded by the Angelenos in the Academy. Despite being snubbed for Oscar nominations, it went on to be considered a classic, one imitated not only by filmmakers (ahem Christopher Nolan's "Dark Knight") but also by real-life crooks. Still, for all the obsessive viewings and re-viewings, there's a lot you may not know about "Heat." Here are 11 things you need to know. 1. The inspiration for De Niro's Neil McCauley was a real-life Chicago thief of the same name. The real-life Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino's character) was Chicago cop Chuck Adamson, a technical adviser on Mann's TV police dramas "Miami Vice" and "Crime Story." 2. As in the film, Adamson and McCauley actually did have a sitdown at a coffee shop, where they treated each other with the mutual respect of disciplined professionals. Later, Adamson's team did kill McCauley in a shootout after a robbery. 3. Keanu Reeves was initially attached to the role of Neil's right-hand man, Chris. But Val Kilmer stepped into the part when he became available during time freed up from his "Batman Forever" shoot. 4. Mann spent more than a decade developing the "Heat" script. In 1989, he shot an abbreviated version of it as the TV movie "L.A. Takedown" (pictured below). It was made as a backdoor pilot to a possible TV series about Los Angeles cops. NBC declined to pick it up as a series. 5. The full "Heat" script found its way to producer Art Linson, who gave it to De Niro and Pacino. Though the two iconic actors had both appeared in 1974's "The Godfather Part II," they had never shared screen time. Of course, in the three-hour "Heat," they'd only have about 10 minutes of scenes together. 6. The research the cast and filmmakers did on the lives of cops and criminals was extensive. Mann spent seven months going on ride-alongs with L.A. robbery and homicide detectives. Those playing McCauley's gang met with real-life convicts and ex-cons, including Danny Trejo, who ended up landing a role in the film. 7. The preparation for the heist and shootout that make up the film's central set piece was the most meticulous of all. Actors playing both cops and robbers trained with weapons for three months on a police shooting range, with makeshift buildings and cars added to simulate the layout of the actual downtown Los Angeles location. Tom Sizemore and some of the other thief actors, wearing disguises and body armor, went to the bank and cased the joint. Producers had tipped off the bank's manager, but the tellers and guards were none the wiser. 8. The actual shoot of the bank robbery took several weeks to film because the production had access to the location only on Saturdays and Sundays. Each take resulted in the firing of 800 to 1,000 blank rounds. 9. The sound the gunshots made as they echoed off the walls of neighborhood skyscrapers was so terrifying that Mann used them as they were recorded, rather than dubbing in sound effects in post-production. 10. The De Niro/Pacino coffee sequence was shot at Kate Mantilini, a Beverly Hills late-night restaurant owned in part by Harry Lewis, one of Humphrey Bogart's co-stars in the classic crime thriller "Key Largo." Visitors to the eatery liked to request seats at the table where the scene was filmed. Alas, the restaurant closed in 2014. 11. The budget for "Heat" was reportedly between $50 and $60 million. It earned back $67 million in North America and another $120 million overseas. %Slideshow-318509% This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

The First 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them' Trailer Returns to the Wizarding World Posted: The first trailer for upcoming "Harry Potter" spinoff "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" is officially here, and while it doesn't give much away (it's being dubbed an "announcement trailer," whatever that means), it's full of enough Easter eggs to keep diehard Potterheads happy until the flick's release next fall -- or at least until the release of the full trailer in a few months. The clip begins with Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) casting the "Lumos Maxima" spell seen in the "Potter" series, then dives into the Magical Congress of the United States of America (a.k.a. the American version of the UK's Ministry of Magic), where Tina Goldstein (Katherine Waterston) appears to be carrying Newt's case. That case is crucial to Newt's work studying and collecting magical creatures -- and unfortunately, as Tina reports to the Congress, it's been opened, and some of its contents have escaped. According to Pottermore, Tina is speaking with Seraphina (Carmen Ejogo), who appears to have some sort of leadership role in the Congress -- and she doesn't seem pleased that Newt's specimens are now roaming around New York City. Apparently, the Congress is even more secretive than the Ministry when it comes to In addition to those characters, there are quick glimpses of a few other key players in the flick, including an auror named Percival Graves (Colin Farrell) and Jacob (Dan Fogler), who appears to be Newt's new assistant. There's also a scene featuring Newt taking a quick peek inside his case, though viewers can only hear, not see, its contents. Still, it's enough of a taste to intrigue us. And that last bit of music riffing on the familiar "Potter" theme is chill-inducing, to say the least. We can't wait for more. "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" casts its spell in theaters on November 18, 2016. 'Star Wars': 7 Things You (Probably) Didn't Know About Han Solo Posted: Who doesn't love Han Solo? In a film franchise full of people who can levitate objects and slice things in half with laser swords, he's still the coolest guy in the galaxy. And with "The Force Awakens" marking his return to the big screen, we'll finally learn what Han has been up to since helping the Rebel Alliance blow up the Death Star almost 40 years ago. To help fill these last, painful days of waiting, here are seven fun facts you might not know about everyone's favorite scruffy-looking nerf herder. 1. He wasn't always human Early on in the development of "Star Wars," George Lucas envisioned Han as a green-skinned, amphibious alien who looked more than a little bit like the DC Comics character Swamp Thing. It's probably for the best that Lucas opted for a less ambitious approach. 2. Solo owes (some of) his origins to Francis Ford Coppola If you're wondering where Han Solo got his trademark charm and cocky personality, you can credit that to the man behind the "Godfather" trilogy. Lucas worked with Coppola on the set of "Apocalypse Now" and wound up channeling the experience into his evolving "Star Wars" script. 3. Billy Dee Williams almost got the part It's a well-known fact that Lucas considered a number of actors for the part of Han. But did you know that one of those actors was the future Lando Calrissian himself? It's tough to imagine Han with even more swagger, but Billy Dee just might have pulled it off. 4. Han made a cameo in "Firefly" Nathan Fillion's Mal Reynolds may be a chip off the old space smuggler block, but Han himself technically appeared several times during the course of "Firefly's" brief run. The producers hid a model of Han frozen in carbonite in several scenes as a way of paying homage to "Star Wars" and its influence. 5. Solo's most famous line was ad-libbed Harrison Ford is said to have told George Lucas, "George, you can type this s**t, but you sure as hell can't say it." And when it came time for Han and Leia to say their farewells in "Empire Strikes Back," Ford ad-libbed what would become one of the most iconic lines in Hollywood history, "I know." 6. Solo almost appeared in "Episode III" An early draft of the script for "Revenge of the Sith" had a young Han living among the Wookiees on Kashyyk (above). That element was cut from the final version, and we'll probably have to wait until the 2019 Han Solo film to learn the official account of how Han and Chewie first crossed paths. 7. He met Indiana Jones (kind of) The out-of-continuity comic series "Star Wars Tales" featured a story called "Into the Great Unknown," where Han and Chewie crash land on Earth in the Pacific Northwest. Han is killed by the local Indian tribe, while Chewie becomes the basis of the legend of Sasquatch. Over a century later, Han's corpse is discovered by none other than Indiana Jones and Short Round. %Slideshow-345253% This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Best of Late Night TV: Jennifer Lawrence's Big Questions and Bradley Cooper's Glistening Sex Gel Posted: If you're like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don't worry; we've got you covered. Here's the best of what happened last night on late night. Jennifer Lawrence is making the rounds to promote "Joy," and she visited "The Late Show" to chat about life's big questions with Stephen Colbert. You know, like "do you think the colors I see are the same colors you see?" That is the eternal question. Over on "The Tonight Show," Tina Fey did a bunch of celebrity impressions and it was basically the best thing ever. Her Sofia Vergara is beyond. As is her Elmo, to be honest. FInally on "Late Night," Bradley Cooper talked about filming his sex scene in "Wet Hot American Summer." Turns out he was covered head to toe in "glistening" sex gel. Totally normal, nothing to see here, etc. %Slideshow-346730% This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
