Warner Archives Golden Harvest Collection

Warner Archives Golden Harvest Collection

If you’re looking for stocking stuffers for that special Hong Kong film buff (yourself included), look no further. On December 8, 2015, Warner is releasing four Golden Harvest movies under their Warner Archive DVD Collection line.

The first wave (and hopefully not the last) consists of 1989′s Pedicab Driver and 1993′s Blade of Fury, both starring Sammo Hung; 1996′s Big Bullet, starring Lau Ching Wan; and 1997′s Downtown Torpedoes, starring Kaneshiro Takeshi.

Although exact details are limited, we’re assuming that all titles are anamorphic widescreen and in their original Chinese language with English subtitles.

Note: As with all Warner Archive Collection titles, these movies are manufactured using DVD-R recordable media. According to Warner, DVD-Rs burn data patterns on an ink layer of the DVD. With traditional stamped DVDs, data patterns are molded within a texture layer of the DVD. So what does this mean? DVD-Rs are more sensitive to prolonged exposure to direct sunlight (so no leaving the DVD upside down on the dash board of your car). Also, unless you have a really old DVD player, DVD-Rs will play fine on standard DVD players.

All four titles are currently available for pre-order at Amazon.com.

In the time since 2008′s Rambo, there have been numerous ideas for the next Rambo film, most of which were generated by Sylvester Stallone himself.

You may recall Rambo V: The Last Stand, which pitted Rambo against experimental Universal Soldier-like enemies; then there was Rambo V: The Savage Hunt, in which Rambo was out to rescue a kidnapped girl from sex traffickers and drug dealers near the Mexican border.

Later came the concept of adapting James Byron Huggin's 1999 novel Hunter into Rambo V, which involved the hunt for a killer beast born from an illegal genetic experiment gone wrong – fans were not entirely enthused about Rambo taking a sudden detour into sci-fi.

In 2013, producer Avi Lerner conspired to turn Rambo into a TV series with Sylvester Stallone reprising his role as John Rambo for television, an idea that ultimately fizzled.

A year or so later, Sly himself released an update: “First I will make a new Rambo, darker, in the style of No Country for Old Men. Then Scarpa, the story of a very famous gangster.” There were also rumors that Tom Hiddleston (“Loki” from The Avengers) would be playing the film’s lead villain. Rambo V even had a working title: Rambo: Last Blood, a full circle nod to 1982′s First Blood.

Now word comes from Deadline that Fox has locked in a deal for Rambo: New Blood, a TV series written by Jeb Stuart (Die Hard). Although Sylvester Stallone serves as executive producer, it’s still unclear on whether or not he will reprise his role as John Rambo. Rambo: New Blood will explore the complex relationship between Rambo and his son, J.R., an ex-Navy SEAL.

Are you excited about seeing Rambo on the small screen or should Stallone stick to his chosen medium of film?

Kino Lorber continues their cycle of releasing cult action classics on Blu-ray with 1987′s Steele Justice, a Rambo-esque thriller starring Martin Kove (Karate Kid, Rambo: First Blood Part II) and Soon-Tek Oh (Missing in Action 2, The Man with the Golden Gun).

Steele (Kove) is ex-cop and Vietnam vet who is determined to bring down Kwan (Oh), a former South Vietnamese general – now a rich and powerful drug lord.

Robert Boris’ Steele also stars Sela Ward (Gone Girl), Ronny Cox (Robocop), Bernie Casey (Under Siege), Shannon Tweed (Electra) and Irene Tsu (Comrades: Almost a Love Story).

Steele Justice hits Blu-ray in early 2016. Don’t miss its trailer.

Top 5 Video Games Based on Action Films

Posted: 01 Dec 2015 01:58 AM PST

The general consensus on video game-based on movies is: they’re not very good. The reason for this often lies with the rush to time the game's release to coincide with the movie itself. But sometimes there are exceptions.

Here are five of the best movie-related video games out there:

5. Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay

2004′s Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay is a rare example of the game being superior to the actual film. Released on the original XBOX console, you play the title character and your job is to escape from a futuristic prison. This game is a mix of shoot 'em up, platform and stealth – it meshes these different gameplay mechanics with great style. And talk about graphics that still hold up great 10 years later!

4. Spider-Man 2

Spider-Man 2 came out in 2004 as a tie-in with the second Tobey Maguire film in the series, which was then at the height of its popularity. Yet this game is anything but a hollow cash-in. It was the first Spider-Man game to master the ability to attach webs to building, rather than the sky, which made it both realistic (well, at least when comparing it to the comic book) and a blast to play. This remains the best superhero game out there, despite recent competition from Batman: Arkham City and the Batman online slot at Royal Vegas.

3. GoldenEye 007

When GoldenEye 007 was released in 1997, it was the Nintendo 64's flagship game. It would also quickly become the focus of many teenagers' attentions. But far from wrecking social lives, the multiplayer mode inspired mates across the world to gather round their TVs and join in the fun together. While the gameplay is now a little dated, this brilliantly designed game set the standard for first person shooters for years to come. Definitely a game changer. No pun intended.

2. X-Men Origins: Wolverine – Uncaged Edition

2009′s X-Men Origins: Wolverine – Uncaged Edition was everything fans had hoped for in the film of the same name. Yet while the film was a relative failure in commercial and critical terms, the game itself offered gruesome executions, visible wounds that healed in real time and awesome finishing moves.

1. Blade Runner

1997′s The Blade Runner video game was so far from a cash-in on the film that it was actually released 15 years afterwards! Harrison Ford did not want the makers to use his likeness, so instead you play rookie Android hunter, Ray McCoy. This PC game was billed as “the first real time 3D adventure game” and its design is so impressive that it still holds up today – just think how it looked in 1997! Its gameplay is also fantastic, with its 13 possible conclusions offering players hours of fun as they replay the game again and again.

So there you have it. Our list for the five best movie-related video games. We’re sure there are some great titles out there we may have missed. Feel free to comment below with your own favorites.
