'SpongeBob SquarePants' Musical Is In the Works

Posted:

spongebob squarepants, spongebob, nickelodeonSpongeBob Squarepants is about to trade in Bikini Bottom for Broadway: The Nickelodeon series is set to become a musical.

There are few details, plot-wise, about the show, but in a splashy press release, Nickelodeon (which is producing the show) and director Tina Landau teased some big names that will be involved in the project. Music will be provided by Jonathan Coulton, Dirty Projectors, The Flaming Lips, John Legend, Lady Antebellum, Cyndi Lauper, Panic! At the Disco, Plain White T's, They Might Be Giants, T.I., and Aerosmith's Steven Tyler and Joe Perry. In addition to that eclectic list, David Bowie is also writing a song, and Coulton will write additional lyrics.

"I was drawn to this project not only for its wild theatrical possibility, but also because I felt 'SpongeBob,' at its core, is a layered and hilarious ensemble comedy," Landau said in a statement. She continued:

SpongeBob himself is of course its center and beating heart--the eternal innocent in a sea of cynics. He's also the classic underdog hero, and so our production sets him on a hero's journey with real stakes, all the while retaining the show's trippy humor and irreverence. We're taking our leads from the TV show but this is an original story, with an original design approach, and original songs written just for the occasion by an amazing array of songwriters. We will present the world of Bikini Bottom and its characters in a whole new way that can only be achieved in the live medium of the theatre. We're bringing the show's fabled characters to life through actors-not prosthetics or costumes that hide them-and we're deploying some unconventional stage craft that will prove that anything can happen in Bikini Bottom.

Sounds pretty awesome to us. The show will debut for a limited run in Chicago in the summer of 2016, before making its way to Broadway in time for the 2016-2017 season.

007 Writer Says Idris Elba Is 'Too Street' to Play James Bond, Quickly Apologizes

Posted:

87th Annual Academy Awards - Press RoomBritish novelist Anthony Horowitz is the latest writer to take a crack at the James Bond franchise, and will publish his first 007 novel, "Trigger Mortis," next week. Unfortunately for Horowitz, that accomplishment has been overshadowed by some inflammatory comments that the author made in reference to actor Idris Elba.

In an interview with The Daily Mail that went live over the weekend, Horowitz was asked about the long-running rumor that Elba will take over the Bond franchise from current star Daniel Craig once Craig finishes his five-film contract. In the wide-ranging interview, Horowitz made it known that he had some strong opinions about Bond's big screen exploits, and that included criticizing the popular choice to replace Craig.

"Idris Elba is a terrific actor, but I can think of other black actors who would do it better," Horowitz told The Daily Mail, citing actor Adrian Lester as his top pick. "For me, Idris Elba is a bit too rough to play the part. It's not a colour issue. I think he is probably a bit too 'street' for Bond. Is it a question of being suave? Yeah."

That last bit may be especially puzzling to anyone who's ever seen Elba act (or look gorgeous in a tux, like in the above photo), but what really ground the internet's gears was the implied racism of Horowitz's remarks, specifically the use of the term "street." Popular opinion was unkind to the author, forcing him to apologize for and clarify his remarks in a Twitter post on Tuesday.

"I'm really sorry my comments about Idris Elba have caused offence. That wasn't my intention," Horowitz's tweeted statement said. "I was asked in my interview if Idris Elba would make a good James Bond. In the article, I expressed the opinion that to my mind Adrian Lester would be a better choice but I'm a writer not a casting director so what do I know? Clumsily, I chose the word 'street' as Elba's gritty portrayal of DCI John Luther was in my mind but I admit it was a poor choice of word. I am mortified to have caused offence." No word from Elba, though Marvel had this perfect response to the controversy:

Tony Todd to Voice Villain Zoom on 'The Flash' Season 2

Posted:

Screening Of New Line Cinema's Next season, the titular hero of "The Flash" will face a villain named Zoom, and the mysterious bad guy has officially been cast.

Variety reports that actor Tony Todd ("Candyman," the "Final Destination" films, "Chuck") will voice the villain, who shows up in episode two of the series's upcoming second season. And according to executive producer Andrew Kreisberg, showrunners took inspiration for the character -- and Todd's casting -- from an iconic source.

"Last year, with the Reverse-Flash, we just modulated Tom Cavanagh's voice, and this year we wanted to do something a little bit different," Kreisberg explained to Variety. "Part of the mystery of the season is who or what is underneath the Zoom outfit, and so we wanted to do something like James Earl Jones as Darth Vader - this iconic voice coming out of this mask. Last year, we thought of the Reverse-Flash as a speed warrior; this year, Zoom is like a speed demon, and no one does demon-voice better than Tony Todd."

Kreisberg also told the trade that unlike the reveal of Cavanagh's villain last season, the reveal of Zoom's true identity will be drawn-out more "like a horror movie," with characters (and viewers) kept guessing for weeks. And while DC Comics fans may already have some ideas, the showrunner promised that the show's take on the character would be a unique one.

" ... [H]opefully comic book fans will be happy because we've come up with a clever way to spin the tale, but that also makes it exciting for the people who aren't as familiar with the comics and are just enjoying the show on its own terms," Kreisberg told Variety.

Season two of "The Flash" premieres on The CW on October 6.

Apple Goes After Netflix With Plans to Get Into Original Programming

Posted:

Apple may be gearing up to compete with Netflix, Hulu and Amazon by producing its own original programming.

Variety reports that the tech giant has been quietly meeting with Hollywood execs, but Apple hasn't confirmed that. Should these plans pan out, Apple could be in the original content business by 2016.

Variety cites one unnamed "high-level executive," who said that the company wants to create long-form content. Whether that's TV series or movies remains to be seen. It's also not clear if they'd opt for a subscription model, like Netflix, or continue to charge per program download, as they do on iTunes.

Apple reportedly tried to make a deal for the "Top Gear" stars' new show after they left the BBC, but they ended up at Amazon instead.

And while Apple has been buying independent films at festivals to distribute on iTunes, they've also been talking about creating their own original indie films, a source tells Variety.

CEO Tim Cook reportedly has about $200 billion to spend in either acquiring content or building up its own in-house studio, which isn't exactly chump change.

Slashfilm speculates that Oscar-nominated director David Fincher might be just the guy to head up its original content division, since he's made ads for Apple in the past and only bowed out of the Steve Jobs biopic (which went to Danny Boyle) after a dispute with Sony over money. Sounds like Apple has more than enough money to throw around.

The 10 Best Aging Action Stars Ever, Ranked

Posted:

Stars who made their names beating up bad guys three decades ago may be in their fifties and sixties now, but they're still big box office draws, at least to overseas audiences (where Hollywood makes most of its money anyway) and to older North American viewers (increasingly, a dependable group of moviegoers with disposable income).

So it's no wonder that recent releases are action thrillers starring hardcore heroes who look like your dad. Call them "dadcore" heroes. It's not just '80s stalwarts like Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Bruce Willis, either, but also thespians like Liam Neeson and Danny Glover, guys who can actually act.

Either way, their years give them a sense of experience and worldliness that makes up for their lessened speed and agility. Here's a countdown of the top 10 among these senior silver-screen tough guys.

Chloe Grace Moretz Fights Aliens in 'The 5th Wave' Trailer

Posted:

the 5th wave, 5th wave trailer, chloe grace moretzIt's your typical romance story: Girl meets boy, girl suspects boy of being an alien, girl tries to save the planet from an invasion.

That's the gist of "The 5th Wave," the big-screen adaptation of the YA novel of the same name, with some natural disasters and big-budget special effects thrown in for good measure.

The first trailer for the flick introduces us to Cassie (Chloe Grace Moretz), who's separated from her family in the midst of an alien invasion, and trying desperately to find her younger brother, Sammy (Zackary Arthur). Unfortunately, the aliens have sent spies to Earth to pose as humans, and so when Cassie teams up with Evan (Alex Roe) in her search for Sammy, she's not entirely sure if he's human, or an Other.

Add in the threat of the fifth wave of the attack (which has already included the aliens stealing the Earth's power, destroying its cities and landmarks, infecting the population with a deadly virus, and infiltrating our ranks), in which the aliens will also enter and control human minds, and that adds up to a whole lot of drama.

In a speech cribbed straight from Katniss Everdeen's playbook, though, Cassie intends to put up a fight when the aliens come calling.

"The Others see our hope as a weakness," she says, "but they're wrong."

Audiences will see for themselves when "The 5th Wave" hits on January 15, 2016.

Harry Potter's Son Started at Hogwarts Today, J.K. Rowling Reveals

Posted:

JK Rowling Hosts Fundraising Event For Charity 'Lumos'Unless you've been hit by a Gilderoy Lockhart memory-erasing charm, you probably know that today, September 1, is the day that young witches and wizards will be packing up their cauldrons and broomsticks and heading off to Hogwarts -- at least, in the fictional "Harry Potter" universe.

And author J.K. Rowling has a very special message for one of those would-be students.

Rowling revealed on Twitter that September 1, 2015 is the day that James Sirius Potter -- the eldest son of Harry and Ginny -- started as a First Year student at Hogwarts. The epilogue to "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," which took place in 2017, featured James's younger brother, Albus Severus, getting ready to hop on the Hogwarts Express at King's Cross Station for his first day at the wizarding school, but readers were never told definitively what year James started.

"I'm in Edinburgh, so could somebody at King's Cross wish James S Potter good luck for me? He's starting at Hogwarts today," Rowling wrote on Twitter on Tuesday. Several fans played along, tweeting back at Rowling that they had indeed wished James well. Rowling kept up the ruse by urging well-wishers to be polite but respectful of James's space -- especially if he's making friends on the train, just like his dad did with Ron and Hermione back in "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone." And the fun didn't stop there. Apparently, after James arrived at Hogwarts, he was sorted into Gryffindor -- just like his dad and mom (and Uncle Ron and Aunt Hermione) before him. We couldn't be more proud. Happy first day of school, James!

'Under the Dome' Cancelled by CBS After 3 Seasons

Posted:

The dome is coming down, and so is "Under the Dome": CBS has cancelled the sci-fi drama after three seasons.

The network announced the cancellation on Monday, revealing that the show would end with the season three finale on September 10. While the series, based on the popular Stephen King novel of the same name, initially premiered to blockbuster ratings back in 2013, it just couldn't keep up that momentum.

"Two years ago, 'Under the Dome' broke new ground in the summer and became an instant hit on CBS, as well as with viewers around the world," said Nina Tassler, chair of CBS Entertainment, in a statement. "'Dome''s event storytelling and multiplatform business model paved the way for more original summer programming with the successful rollouts of 'Extant' and 'Zoo.' We're excited to present the final chapter in Chester's Mill as the story comes full circle, with the dome coming down as dramatically as it went up."

"Dome" was originally envisioned as a one-season adaptation of King's novel, but was so popular that CBS brass decided to amend the storyline, add new characters, and continue the series indefinitely. But all good things must come to an end, and with "Dome"'s declining ratings -- and the showrunners' decision to take down the titular mysterious obstacle -- it seemed like the time for the show to end had finally arrived.

According to Variety, the series finale "will answer many questions about the dome's origin and power, as two groups of residents will engage in one final conflict that some won't survive."

"Under the Dome" wraps its run on CBS on September 10.

Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard Plot Murder in New 'Macbeth' Trailer

Posted:

MacbethSomething wicked this way comes - and it's ready to put a dagger in your heart.

The new U.S. trailer for "Macbeth" has just debuted, and it's a blood-soaked, intense, martial thing of beauty. Michael Fassbender stars as the titular ambitious general who, along with his wife Lady Macbeth (Marion Cotillard), plots the murder of the king -- to take the crown for himself.

Of course, anyone who's read Shakespeare's great drama knows what happens next, but without spoiling it for those who haven't, let's just say that power comes with a price.
Watch the trailer.

But though the story is familiar, this new "Macbeth" feels alive and fresh. Director Justin Kurzel's vision looks bold and edgy and raw, without compromising the heart of the play. And Fassbender and Cotillard's performances seem well worth the praise they got after the film debuted at Cannes a few months ago.

"Macbeth" opens in theaters December 4.

The 'Coach' Reboot Is Dead at NBC

Posted:

CoachLooks like nostalgia just isn't enough.

NBC has canceled their planned "Coach" reboot, despite an initial 13-episode order. The new show would've brought back original series creator Barry Kemp, as well as stars Craig T. Nelson and Bill Fagerbakke. There have been rumors that production was not going well due to creative issues.

The new "Coach" would've been a sequel to the original, which aired from 1989 to 1997. Nelson's character, Hayden Fox, is retired, but called back as an assistant coach to his son.

From the beginning, the revival seemed like a bad idea. At TCA a few weeks ago, one reporter asked NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt if it was a practical joke. "One man's practical joke is another man's hit show," he said. "It's a way to do another variation on a family show with, I think, a truly talented star and a great showrunner and a presold title. And if that works, then 'Elf' the series is next."

Well, thank goodness it didn't work then.

Eddie Redmayne Is a Transgender Icon in 'The Danish Girl' Trailer

Posted:

Danish GirlSometimes, people are born into the wrong body. Caitlyn Jenner knew it. So did Lili Elbe, one of the first people in history to undergo gender reassignment surgery.

Her story is told in "The Danish Girl," starring Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne. Einar Wegener's
transformation into Lili begins as a lark, when his artist wife Gerda (Alicia Vikander) asks him to stand in for a female model.

Eventually, Einar begins to dress as Lili in public, and makes the step to receive surgery to permanently change his body. Gerda supports him, but things get messy when Lili is attracted to a man.
Watch the trailer.

"The Danish Girl" has "Oscar bait" written all over it. It's directed by an Oscar nominee and stars last year's Best Actor Oscar winner. And the topic could not be buzzier. Still, it looks fantastic - there's a reason Oscar bait is so appealing. Redmayne's performance seems nuanced and vulnerable, and he could easily get another nomination this year.

"The Danish Girl" premieres at the Venice Film Festival this week, then opens in limited release November 7.

A Walk in the Woods EXCLUSIVE - Airport Goodbye

Best of Late Night TV: Kimmel's Death Threats From Angry Gamers, Gov. Christie's Brief Lip Sync Battle

Posted:

If you're like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don't worry; we've got you covered. Here's the best of what happened last night on late night.

Last Friday, "Jimmy Kimmel Live" posted its most disliked video ever -- making fun of YouTube gamers who watch other people playing video games. Here's the video. It ended up with more than 55,000 thumbs down on YouTube. Commenters wanted Jimmy to die, get AIDS, get cancer. They threatened his wife and daughter. And they say the PC crowd is too sensitive -- don't dare take on the fanboys! On second thought, please do dare.
Demi Lovato and Roseanne Barr were both on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" and Jimmy brought back one of the show's classic games, "Name That Famous Celebrity." Demi and Roseanne were blindfolded and Jimmy's friend Yehya described photos of celebrities, and the ladies had to guess the celebs.
The MTV VMAs were over the weekend and Jimmy talked about Kanye's epic acceptance speech. Guillermo performed an abridged version as opposed to the full 13 minute real-life event:
On the same subject, Jimmy compared Kanye West -- who announced a 2020 presidential bid -- with Donald Trump in a side-by-side video.
Roseanne -- love her hair -- also talked about Kanye as president. She ran for president once and wants more regular people to run. But she also thinks the end of the world is near ... even though she's predicted it to have ended many times before.
Kimmel referenced the MTV VMAs spat between Nicki Minaj and Miley Cyrus and explained the feud in emojis. Reminiscent of the Stephen Colbert promo.

Demi also talked about how many times she falls down in real life, whether she's wearing heels or not.
Meanwhile, over on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon," Gov. Chris Christie forced Jimmy to engage in a Lip Sync Battle. He really went for it ... for about three seconds of Springsteen.
Gov. Christie also previewed what he'll do in the next debate. Last time, he went 20 questions without being asked anything and he wondered if his mic was even on. On September 16, he said, if he gets to 15 questions in a row without being asked anything, he's going to go nuclear. In a separate video, Christie talked about going on an ice cream run in N.H. with Mitt Romney, Marco Rubio and their families. None of the guys had any money. During the discussion, Fallon made another fat joke and Christie mock walked off.
Fallon also broke out his "Do Not Read" list, showing off real books with disturbing titles and themes.
