'The Keeping Room' and the Indie Western Resurgence Posted: 25 Sep 2015 09:30 PM PDT For the better part of sixty years, westerns were the bread and butter of Hollywood filmmaking. There were prestige westerns and B-westerns and everything in-between, with every year expanding the genre with dozens of new films. And then audiences lost interest in the late '60s and early '70s and westerns began to die out. The quintessential American genre was now a novelty, occasionally rising from its semi-retirement to bring us movies like Unforgiven, Tombstone, True Grit, and even revisionist tales like Django Unchained. Each of those films proved that there was still a hunger for westerns, even if the demand is not as high as it once was. And that brings us to 2015 and The Keeping Room, a movie that's not only a terrific western, but a perfect example of how the... Another 'Ghostbusters' Veteran Joins the Reboot -- Here Are All the Known Cameos So Far Posted: 25 Sep 2015 08:00 PM PDT It's very hard to keep a secret these days, and while that might be frustrating for some filmmakers it's not a detriment to the enjoyment of their movies. We now know about a number of original Ghostbusters cast members making cameo appearances in the upcoming reboot, and while that takes away the surprise, it leaves us with anticipation about seeing the beloved actors reunited on screen, albeit not necessarily together in the same scene. Here's a quick guide to who is known to be coming back and where you can find them in the new movie, plus our pick for one more person we wish were joining them (and maybe is but hasn't had his cameo leaked yet). Bill Murray Original Role: Dr. Peter Venkman, Ghostbuster New Role: Professional... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
You Can Now Watch Netflix in Virtual Reality Posted: 25 Sep 2015 06:30 PM PDT Behold, the future! Though we're still a few years away from virtual reality completely invading our lives in every conceivable way, this week some big steps were taken in terms of making virtual reality more accessible and affordable for anyone interested in jumping on the VR bandwagon. First, Oculus announced a new $99 Samsung Gear VR headset that will be available this November, and work with Samsung phones including the Note 5, S6, S6 Edge, and S6 Edge+. Aside from Google's limited Cardboard VR accessory, this will be a game-changer in terms of making VR headsets and the accompanying technology more accessible to the masses -- or, well, people who have Samsung phones. While these early days of VR will primarily revolve around revolutionizing gaming (the... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Watch Anne Hathaway and Seth Meyers Spoof Rom-Com Endings Posted: 25 Sep 2015 05:15 PM PDT Do you groan when a romantic comedy ends with one lead character making a mad dash in pursuit of the other? The "race for your love" denouement (as classified by TV Tropes) is definitely overused in the movies, but it's also so common now that it's almost more of an expected convention rather than a problematic cliche. That doesn't mean it's not great fodder for parody, however. Below, check out the latest spoof on the trope, in which talk show host Seth Meyers goes after guest Anne Hathaway to ask a question (or two) for a cute Late Night With Seth Meyers sketch. After that, we've selected a few favorite actual examples of protagonists racing for their loves. The Apartment: Fran (Shirley MacLaine) decides not to be... Comics on Film: What Marvel's Future Looks Like With and Without Tom Hiddleston's Loki Posted: 25 Sep 2015 03:00 PM PDT In last week's column we talked a lot about the state of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's villains, and how the MCU at-large would benefit from the return of the Red Skull. Throughout that piece, we discussed the idea that many people seem to share regarding a "villain problem" within the MCU, but a shared consensus seems to be that whatever problems these villains may present, Loki -- as played by Tom Hiddleston -- is not a part of that problem. He likely won't be, either, as long as the character continues to be developed in interesting ways and -- perhaps most importantly -- Hiddleston continues to find joy in playing the Norse God of Mischief. Well, on that last front, there may now be a problem. Hiddleston May Be Getting 'Loki... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Movie News: Hear the New James Bond Song; More 'Men In Black' Is On the Way Posted: 25 Sep 2015 01:00 PM PDT SPECTRE: Sam Smith was announced a few weeks ago as the performer of the new James Bond song, for SPECTRE, and now we finally get to hear it. The tune is called "Writing's On the Wall," and it's available to stream free on Spotify or buy on iTunes. We'll see how it plays in the actual movie when the new 007 installment hits theaters on November 6. [Sam Smith] Men In Black: Sony is continuing the Men in Black franchise with at least three more films -- another trilogy, that is. Producers Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald revealed the latest in an interview promoting the documentary He Named Me Malala and said that Will Smith is "most likely" not to return. No word on Tommy Lee Jones or whether these movies will... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
