The Geek Beat's Guide to 10 Geeky Fall Movies To Put On Your Calendar

Posted: 24 Sep 2015 08:30 PM PDT

The summer movie season is over, but that doesn't mean all the good geeky movies are behind us. Far from it, in fact. This coming fall (and early winter) is peppered with the sort of geeky movies you'd do well to put on your own calendar – as well as a few films you might want to check out for the sake of comic-book shop conversation or the possibility of finding a nice, under-the-radar surprise. Here are ten geeky movies hitting theaters over the next few months to keep an eye out for:   The Movie Everyone Will Be Talking About: The Martian (October 2) Matt Damon is an astronaut stranded on Mars who has to figure out a way to survive on the alien planet and let his crew and mission control know he's alive in this sci-fi thriller that's been...

Sequel Bites: 'Prometheus 2' Gets a Title, Plus:' 'Independence Day 2,' 'John Wick 2' and 'Spectre'

Posted: 24 Sep 2015 06:49 PM PDT

As always, there are a lot of sequels on the horizon from Hollywood, and today we've got updates one some of the more interesting ones. Check out big news involving long-running franchises and first-time follow-ups right here:   Prometheus 2 In an interview with Hey U Guys while promoting The Martian, Ridley Scott revealed that Promtheus 2 isn't actually "Prometheus 2." The title of the follow-up to his prequel to the Alien movies appears to be more directly tied to those original movies. "It's going to be Alien: Paradise Lost now," he told the site. This revelation comes just days after Scott was quoted in another interview stating that it would be a while before Prometheus and Alien are directly connected. Here's what he told...

Hugh Jackman Thinks Tom Hardy Should be the Next Wolverine

Posted: 24 Sep 2015 04:30 PM PDT

There are some franchises that can get away with recasting lead roles every now and then. Fans are used to seeing a new James Bond or a new Batman every movie cycle. Rarer, though, are the roles so perfectly tied to an actor that it seems like they can never really be recast. We're talking about true legacy roles, like Robert Englund's Freddy Kreuger or Hugh Jackman's Wolverine.  Jackman has said he only has one more Wolverine movie left in him, and since Fox plans on many more X-Men movies, at some point someone else is going to have to take on the role. And Hugh Jackman thinks that person should be none other than Tom Hardy. Jackman throws out Hardy's name in a joking way ("He's definitely younger than me"), but there's got to be some...

Watch: 'Foodfellas' Is Like 'Goodfellas' for the Fast-Food Industry

Posted: 24 Sep 2015 01:30 PM PDT

This year marks the 25th anniversary of Martin Scorsese's Goodfellas, which is presumably why filmmaker Reuben Guberek created the 13-minute short film Foodfellas -- a Goodfellas parody that tracks the rise and fall of fast-food wise guys Ron the Don and his apprentice, the King of Burgers. With high production values, plenty of nods to Scorsese's movie and a voiceover rich with lines like... "The money came pouring in like an extra large double diet soda," the short is amusing and inventive and chock-full of enough fast-food references to make you ponder grabbing a bacon cheeseburger for your next meal.  Check it out below.  Warning: This short film does not come with a side of fries.

Posted: 24 Sep 2015 12:00 PM PDT

Furious 8: Who will direct Furious 8? The next installment in the popular series has already been scheduled for release on April 14, 2017, but director James Wan (Furious 7) is busy making a sequel to The Conjuring, and Justin Lin, who helmed four installments, is now making Star Trek Beyond. While Universal Studios weighs possible action directors, writer Chris Morgan is working on a script that will steer the franchise forward without Paul Walker in the mix. [The Hollywood Reporter]   Prometheus: Director Ridley Scott has confirmed plans for multiple movies that will delve further into the pre-Alien universe he first explored in 2012's Prometheus. He said that the next film, expected to begin production in early 2016, will not tie directly into the Alien universe...
