DVD Obscura: The New Indie and International Movies You Need to Watch

Posted: 15 Sep 2015 09:30 PM PDT

New Indie: So if the phrase “Samuel L. Jackson is the President” doesn’t automatically do it for you, maybe “from the director of Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale” will. In either event, you’ll have a blast with Big Game (Anchor Bay Entertainment), starring Jackson as a POTUS who finds himself stranded in Finland after Air Force One crashes, eluding would-be kidnappers with only the assistance of a young boy (Onni Tommila) on a survival quest, armed with nothing but a bow and arrow. It’s the highest of concepts, reuniting Tommila with his Rare Exports director Jalmari Helander, but there’s a lot to like in this action extravaganza, not least of which is an ensemble cast that also includes Victor Garber, Ray Stevenson, Ted Levine...

Woody Harrelson Will Play the Villain In 'War For the Planet of the Apes'

Posted: 15 Sep 2015 08:00 PM PDT

The title of the next Planet of the Apes movie should give you an idea of what to expect. War for the Planet of the Apes will presumably involve the final conflict between Caesar and his evolved simians and the remainder of the human race. This time, we can expect the latter to be represented by a well-armed military force. But that's mostly going by the original ending of the last installment, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, which would have had U.S. Navy battleships arriving in San Francisco Bay. Now we have further confirmation of the premise in the name of the sequel's main villain: the Colonel. According to The Hollywood Reporter, this human character, presumably a colonel in the army, will be played by Woody Harrelson. Although very likely only for the one movie...

First 'The Divergent Series: Allegiant' Trailer Sends Shailene Woodley Over The Wall

Posted: 15 Sep 2015 06:30 PM PDT

The first teaser trailer for The Divergent Series: Allegiant is bound to give anyone a sense of deja vu. For starters, it still feels like the first Divergent just came out, so it's unusual that we're already on to the third film in the series. Secondly, the first half of the trailer is a highlight reel from Divergent and Insurgent, which may leave casual fans wondering "Wait, haven't I already seen this movie?" But then the trailer sends Tris (Shailene Woodley) and her cadre of lawbreakers over the wall and into the colorful but deadly wastelands. There aren't a ton of plot specifics given away in the teaser, but it does offer an action-packed look at what lays outside the ruins of Chicago. Allegiant is an adaptation of the final book in the...

Posted: 15 Sep 2015 02:30 PM PDT

Ah, we love Hollywood rumors, especially when they come true! For now, the following reports should be taken with a grain of salt, but they all certainly stir our anticipation for the movies that might result. Rumor: Darren Aronofsky will direct Channing Tatum as daredevil Evel Knievel. Source: The Tracking Board Background: Three years ago, we heard that Channing Tatum was in negotiations to star in and produce a movie based on the life of Evel Knievel, a motorcyle stunt driver who became famous in the 1970s for his televised attempts to jump cars, trucks, and the Snake River Canyon. The making of the 1964 movie, starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, was the subject of 2013's Saving Mr. Banks.
