'Grease: Live' Scores Big Ratings, Beats 'The Wiz,' 'Peter Pan' Posted: "Grease" is officially the word today, as Fox revels in the ratings high -- and critical success -- of Sunday's "Grease: Live" broadcast. The network's first foray into the live musical game was a slam dunk, scoring an impressive 12.2 million overall viewers during its 7-10 p.m. timeslot. That number rose slightly during the final half-hour of the broadcast, which drew 12.81 million sets of eyeballs to the telecast. And things get even better from there: The broadcast notched a 4.6 share in the coveted 18-49 demo (tying "The Sound of Music Live!"'s impressive total), and boasted Fox's largest overall audience for any series so far this season, snatching the title away from the 11 million viewers who tuned in for "American Idol"'s debut. Compared to NBC's recent musical offerings -- which started the live TV trend back in 2013 -- "Grease" proved a formidable foe, easily taking down "The Wiz Live!" (which notched 11.5 million overall viewers and a 3.4 share among 18-49-year-olds) and "Peter Pan Live!" (9.21 million viewers, 2.4 share). "The Sound of Music Live!" remains the gold standard in terms of overall audience, with its whopping 18.62 million viewers, though it scored the exact same numbers when it came to both shares of the 18-49 crowd and overall viewership share (4.6/13). On social media, "Grease: Live" launched 1.397 million tweets (narrowly beating out "The Wiz"'s 1.374 million), with Vanessa Hudgens -- performing after the death of her father -- earning the most mentions of any cast member with 90,756, according to marketing company Amobee Brand Intelligence. Fox must be encouraged by these results, and no doubt excited to try its hand at a taped musical when it airs its version of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" later this year. If its direction, staging, and production values are as high as those of "Grease: Live," it seems audiences are in for another awesome evening of television. Pope Francis to Make Acting Debut in 'Beyond the Sun' Posted: Meeting with movie stars must have given Pope Francis the acting bug, because the pontiff is set to make his acting debut in a new, religious-themed movie. Variety reports that His Holiness will play himself in the flick, called "Beyond the Sun," which is described as "a family adventure based on the Gospels." This will be the first time that any pope has appeared in a feature film. According to the trade, the pope personally asked filmmakers "to make a movie that communicated Jesus' message to children." All proceeds from the movie will go Argentinean charities El Alemendro and Los Hogares de Cristo, which assist at-risk children and young adults. "Our excitement and gratitude toward His Holiness, Pope Francis participating in this film is beyond words," said Andrea Iervolino, co-producer of the project, in a statement. "This is not just a movie for us, it's a message, and who better to have on your side to deliver an important societal and spiritual message than the Pope." Production is expected to start in Italy early this year. [via: Variety] Photo credit: AFP/Getty Images This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
'Birth of a Nation' Wins Big at Sundance; Are 2017 Oscars Next? Posted: The 2016 Oscars haven't even happened yet, but based on buzz coming from the Sundance Film Festival, the 2017 Oscars may already have a frontrunner. "The Birth of a Nation" won big at the annual film festival celebrating independent cinema, claiming both the audience prize and grand jury prize for feature films. The drama tells the true story of Nat Turner, who led a slave revolt in 1831, and was sold for a headline-grabbing sum of $17.5 million to Fox Searchlight, making history as the largest deal in Sundance history. Sundance has plenty of past success launching Oscar contenders, including recent Best Picture nominees "Brooklyn," "Boyhood," "Whiplash," "Beasts of the Southern Wild," "Winter's Bone," and "Precious." And according to Variety, it will be hard for the Academy to ignore Nate Parker, who wrote, directed, starred in, and produced the acclaimed flick, ensuring that #OscarsSoWhite will be a thing of the past in 2017. Of course, Sundance accolades don't automatically equal Oscar glory. Just look at last year's audience and grand jury prize champion, "Me and Earl and the Dying Girl," for proof: That movie failed to earn any Oscar nods, and was ignored throughout the rest of awards season as well. Still, "Birth" has the benefit of being a true story -- always Academy catnip -- and has the distribution power of Fox Searchlight behind it (the company also launched recent Best Picture winner "12 Years a Slave"). And with the Academy's recent pledge to diversify, it will be hard to ignore "Birth," even with the 2017 Oscars still so far away. Stay tuned. This Heinz Ketchup Super Bowl Ad Is Weiner Doggone Adorable Posted: The Super Bowl may still be days away, but Heinz may have already won, with a hilarious ad for its new line of ketchups that features what the company is calling a "weiner stampede" -- a.k.a. a bunch of adorable dachshunds dressed as hot dogs. Leonardo DiCaprio Won a SAG Award, But His Vape Pen Won the Night Posted: It's looking more and more like a sure thing that Leonardo DiCaprio will finally collect a coveted Oscar later this month, after he added another Best Actor trophy to his case this weekend with a win at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. But while the "Revenant" star was reveling in his new hardware, a different accessory caught the audience's eye: a vape pen. Yes, Leo is apparently one of those bros who smokes a vape pen indoors -- or in his case, at a swanky awards show, surrounded by dozens of TV and film luminaries -- without a care in the world. The actor activated his device off-camera, according to The Hollywood Reporter, at around 6:46 p.m. PST during the broadcast, while seated and watching the onstage action. And after seeing photographic evidence of the moment, "the internet lost its damn mind," per Pajiba, with plenty of jokes -- and some awkward lust -- aimed at the odd pairing. It's not hard to see why. Based on how you look at the image of Leo thoughtfully and intensely puffing on and cradling the device, it's either sexy, douchey, or hilarious -- or some sort of combination of the three. (We're going with the latter option.) We wonder what DiCaprio's new BFF Pope Francis would have to say about his decorum? Meet Josh Brolin's Studio Head in This Exclusive 'Hail, Caesar!' Featurette Posted: It's a great week for fans of the Coen brothers. Their new comedy "Hail, Caesar!" comes out this Friday, starring the A-list team of Josh Brolin, George Clooney, Ralph Fiennes, Scarlett Johansson, Tilda Swinton, Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, Alden Ehrenreich, and Frances McDormand. This exclusive featurette focuses on the main character, Josh Brolin's Eddie Mannix, the general manager and vice president of Capitol Pictures in early 1950s Hollywood. "He's like the fixer, dealing with the looney bin of the movie industry," Brolin says in the video. "It's kind of amazing the debauchery that was going on during this time." (We see Tilda Swinton's character mention all the "womanizing" and "drinking.") Mannix wants to keep actors happy, Brolin says, but he's also keeping them safe, which turns out to be a big issue in the movie when major movie star Baird Whitlock (George Clooney) gets kidnapped while in costume for the studio's movie, "Hail, Caesar!" Once again, the Coens include a ransom plot, with the studio told it must pay $100,000 or it's curtains for Whitlock. No funny stuff! So that's what Brolin's character will have to fix in the movie. "What's the next problem? What's the next answer? That's the movie business. That's Eddie Mannix." You can see him in action when "Hail, Caesar!" is released in theaters this Friday, February 5. (The movie was also released on Digital for the first time in mid-January.) New Video on Demand, Rental Streaming, and Digital Only "Spotlight" This major Best Picture contender, following the Boston Globe "Spotlight" team's investigation into abuse by Catholic priests, is out on Digital on February 2, with the DVD/Blu-ray discs to follow on February 23. It's hard to make bare-bones journalism riveting -- going through files, cold calling people, re-interviewing the same lawyer over and over -- but Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo, and Rachel McAdams might just make you see these reporters are superheroes. "Steve Jobs" Michael Fassbender and Kate Winslet are both Oscar nominees for their roles in this Danny Boyle biopic, which is out on Digital HD on February 2. The film goes backstage at three iconic Apple product launches, and shows us the man behind the tech legend. You can wait for the discs to drop on February 16, but since it's about a digital demigod, he'd probably want you to download it. "The 33" Antonio Banderas, Rodrigo Santoro, Juliette Binoche, Gabriel Byrne, and Lou Diamond Phillips star in this inspiring drama based on the true story of survival. In 2010, 33 miners were buried alive by an explosion, and an international team spent the next 69 days working around the clock to try and rescue them. Watch the Digital HD version February 2, with the discs to follow February 16. "Martyrs" Troian Bellisario, Bailey Noble, and Kate Burton star in this retelling of the French 2008 cult horror film. This 2015 version, written by the co-writer of "The Revenant," is out on VOD February 2, after hitting theaters and Digital HD on January 22. New on Netflix "Mad Men" Season 7, Part 2 Starting February 5, you can stream the final season of the modern classic that is "Mad Men," and appreciate for the first time -- or all over again -- that badass swagger from Peggy Olson. You earned it, Pegs. "Armageddon" Grab your animal crackers now so you don't miss a thing when Michael Bay's 1998 testosterone-fueled blockbuster blasts onto Netflix on February 1. As usual, the first of the month has a ton of releases, so if you don't want to watch Ben Affleck flirt with Liv Tyler as Bruce Willis saves the world, you have many other options. "Full Metal Jacket" One of the other February 1 options is Stanley Kubrick's lauded 1987 Vietnam War film, starring Matthew Modine, Adam Baldwin, Vincent D'Onofrio, and R. Lee Ermey as the incredibly quotable Gunnery Sgt. Hartman. "Better Call Saul" Another February 1 title coming to Netflix is the first season of Bob Odenkirk's "Breaking Bad" spinoff, "Better Call Saul." The timing is pretty good, since Saul Goodman returns to AMC for Season 2 starting February 15. So you have two weeks to catch up on Season 1, which is more time than you'll need. TV Worth Watching "The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story" (Tuesday on FX at 10 p.m.) This could be amazing. It could be awful. It's certainly going to be interesting. The limited series, based on Jeffrey Toobin's book "The Run of His Life: The People v. O.J. Simpson," takes viewers into the O.J. Simpson trial, with an in-depth look at the legal teams on both sides. The all-star cast is led by Cuba Gooding Jr., John Travolta, Sarah Paulson, David Schwimmer, and Courtney B. Vance. "Madoff" (Wednesday and Thursday on ABC at 8 p.m.) Between "Billions," "Madoff," and the presidential election, 2016 is determined to keep the 1 percent at the center of our lives. This two-night (February 3-4) movie event stars Richard Dreyfuss as Bernie Madoff, with Blythe Danner as his wife Ruth, and follows the rise and fall of the former investment adviser and the fallout from his massive financial scam. Vanessa Hudgens Powers Through 'Grease: Live' After Father's Death, Thanks Fans Posted: Fox's "Grease: Live" just dropped the mic on NBC, showing all networks how a live TV musical should be done. Last night's cast was BORN to hand jive, baby! But the show was not without its obstacles. Going into this weekend, the cast and crew probably thought Los Angeles rain would be the biggest issue, but on January 31 itself -- just a few hours before showtime -- Rizzo actress Vanessa Hudgens updated fans that her father had passed away the night before: Wow. But as they say, the show must go on. And it did. And it was pretty awesome. There were a couple of sound issues, and fans on Twitter (who kept #GreaseLive trending) nitpicked some changes from the film, but overall the reviews were very, very positive for the entire ambitious production and the cast -- led by Julianne Hough and Aaron Tveit, with backup from Carly Rae Jepsen, Keke Palmer, Carlos PenaVega, Mario Lopez, Wendell Pierce, and Ana Gasteyer. Vanessa Hudgens powered through her role like a pro, belting out "Sandra Dee" and Rizzo's poignant solo, "There Are Worse Things: The ratings are still coming in for "Grease: Live," but it's said to be steady with NBC's "The Wiz Live!" which was itself an improvement on "Peter Pan Live!" This production will surely set a new bar for how to stage a live TV musical, and hopefully fans can look forward to more like it in years to come. Did you enjoy the show? Want more stuff like this? 10 Oscar-Nominated Movies That Were Hated by Critics Posted: The 2016 Oscar nominations are chock full of movies that critics love and audiences have praised, but that's not always the case. Accio, Harry Potter Reunion! See Photos, Video From Celebration Event Posted: Harry Potter film stars just gathered for a fan event at Universal Studios Orlando, and the result was magical. That may sound cheesy, but check out Matthew Lewis's dastardly new facial hair and pretend Hot Neville With a Mustache doesn't charm the dress robes off you.
Rupert, now 27, said there was a lot of pressure, and it sounds like he was just glad to get past it. Hopefully that doesn't ding Emma Watson's ego, since there are probably millions of guys out there who would love to kiss her. Anyway, here are some photos and video from the event -- plus a bonus featurette from the upcoming "Harry Potter" prequel, "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them."

Vin Diesel Shares First Three 'xXx: The Return of Xander Cage' Set Photos Posted: Xander Cage wasted no time bringing sexy back. You can see for yourself in the photos below, taken on Vin Diesel's very first day on the sound stage of "xXx: The Return of Xander Cage." The new action movie is a sequel to Diesel's 2002's "xXx," and maybe not so much 2005's "xXx: State of the Union" with Ice Cube. The plot reportedly follows Xander, left for dead after an incident, secretly returning to action for a tough new assignment with his handler Augustus Gibbons. Samuel L. Jackson is back as Agent Gibbons, with Bollywood star Deepika Padukone playing a "huntress" who has a history with Cage, "Orange Is the New Black" star Ruby Rose playing a sniper, and "The Vampire Diaries" alum Nina Dobrev as a "witty and sarcastic techie." The cast also includes Jet Li -- reportedly as a villain -- plus Tony Jaa, Toni Collette, and Conor McGregor. Here are the first photos from set, via Vin Diesel's Facebook and Instagram:
Diesel confirmed the third "xXx" movie back in August, saying filming would start in December in the Philippines. They may have been delayed a bit, to just be filming now, or maybe he meant he arrived for pre-production in December. There's no official release day for this puppy yet, but it's expected in 2017.
