The Geek Beat: Creating A Geeky Movie Marathon For This Year's Oscar Nominees Posted: 24 Feb 2016 09:30 PM PST In just a few days, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will honor last year's best performances and projects at the 88th Oscars ceremony, and unlike in years past, there's quite a bit for fans of geek-friendly films to be happy about this time around. From the “Best Picture” nominations for Mad Max: Fury Road and The Martian to the multiple nominations for Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Ex Machina in other categories, it's a good Oscar year for sci-fi and fantasy fare. It's also a good year for actors and actresses with roots in the geeky movie world, as nearly every nominee has at least one – and often more – memorable role from genre films past and present. In the interest of offering yet another spin on the pre-Oscars... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Michael B. Jordan Will Star in Another 'Thomas Crown Affair' Remake Posted: 24 Feb 2016 06:00 PM PST There's a saying in Hollywood: if at first you do succeed, try, try again. At least that seems to be a saying in the film industry, which tends to remake movies that worked not just once but mulitiple times. The latest example comes with news that MGM is trying out another version of The Thomas Crown Affair. According to The Hollywood Reporter, this one will star Michael B. Jordan. That's really all there is to the project so far. MGM has no screenwriter let alone director attached. They just want to continue working with Jordan following the success of Creed, and the heist film rehash was conceived first as vehicle for the actor. He'll play the title character, a role formerly filled by Steve McQueen in the 1968 original and by Pierce Brosnan in the 1999... Surprise! 'Batman v Superman' Gets an R-rated Version Posted: 24 Feb 2016 03:30 PM PST Much has already been written about how Deadpool's surprise haul at the box office means Hollywood may now openly embrace R-rated superhero movies, but all of that theorizing was in reference to movies that are still in the development phase and haven't even gotten a greenlight yet. Here's an unexpected twist, though: the MPAA just gave Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice an R-rating. Well, technically speaking, they gave an R-rating not to the theatrical cut of the movie that the world will see on March 25, 2016, but to an 'Ultimate Edition" of the movie that Warner Bros. submitted, presumably for a home video release down the line. And specifically speaking, this version earned the restricted rating not for language or nudity - two things that can easily be... 'Pacific Rim 2' Moves Ahead Without Guillermo del Toro Directing Posted: 24 Feb 2016 12:00 PM PST The on-again, off-again talk about a sequel to Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim has taken a very positive spin. Steven S. DeKnight has been hired to direct Pacific Rim 2, according to Deadline, and Universal Pictures will release it in 3D worldwide. DeKnight cut his teeth writing for television, first for MTV's Undressed, then for Joss Whedon's Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel (on which he began serving as a producer as well), and Smallville. He scored big by creating Spartacus, a TV series for Starz that ran from 2010 to 2013. Most recently DeKnight has been the showrunner for Netflix's Daredevil. Although he will be making his feature directorial debut on Pacific Rim 2, he started directing on the small screen in 2003; his credits include Angel, Smallville...
