Here's What You Need to Know About 'The Mermaid,' the New Highest Grossing Movie In China

Posted: 26 Feb 2016 08:30 PM PST

Last weekend, a new movie called The Mermaid opened quietly in America and yet wound up with almost $1 million at the box office. The movie is absolutely huge in China, however, where it's made nearly four times as much as Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Here's what you need to know about the fantasy film as it goes wider across America today:   What is The Mermaid? The Mermaid, or Mei Ren Yu, is a weird and wacky love story between a man and a mermaid, the latter (played by Yun-Lin Jhuang) having been sent to dry land to seduce and stop the former (Chau Deng) from continuing a real estate project that would be harmful to all marine life in the area. Check out the latest subtitled trailer here:   Who is it by? Stephen Chow, best known for Kung...

One Rule Matters: An Appreciation of 'Triple 9' Director John Hillcoat

Posted: 26 Feb 2016 07:00 PM PST

Even when John Hillcoat is making a more conventional movie, a Hollywood movie, you can see his mean streak. The Australian director is back with a new film this weekend, Triple 9, and that's a cause for celebration. Normally, filmmakers as vicious as Hillcoat, whose work refuse to spare you the gruesome details of a harsh world, work on the fringes. And while Hillcoat got his start in the independent film scene, he has made the transition to big budget filmmaking mostly intact, drawing major actors to his projects and then subjecting them to all kinds of menace and mayhem. Hillcoat's films take place in cruel worlds, but they always center on characters who understand their world and know its cruelty all too well. If they aren't on the receiving end, they're...

Comics on Film: About That R-rated 'Batman v Superman' Cut

Posted: 26 Feb 2016 05:30 PM PST

By now, pretty much everybody is aware of the big news that came out this week concerning one of the year's most anticipated comic book films: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will be getting an R-rated "Ultimate Cut" when its released on Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital HD later this year. It seemed that -- much like the reception to its predecessor Man of Steel -- reactions were surprisingly mixed. On the one hand, you had a sect of fans that seemed to celebrate the fact that we'll finally see an R-rated adventure featuring the Dark Knight. On the other hand, though, people were concerned and puzzled: Are we really sure that Superman -- beacon of hope and standard-bearer for DC Comics -- belongs...

Yes, Slusho Makes Its Triumphant Return in '10 Cloverfield Lane'

Posted: 26 Feb 2016 04:00 PM PST

J.J. Abrams is fond of tossing little Easter eggs into scenes that both further show a connection between all of his movies (and TV shows), as well as drive fans absolutely mad. One of those Easter eggs is Slusho, a Japanese-produced soft drink that was first mentioned all the way back in the second episode of Abrams' TV series Alias (see below), but became a much bigger entity in the months before 2008's Cloverfield hit theaters. A big part of that film's viral marketing campaign, it is believed that Slusho -- or at least the company that produces it, Tagruato -- had a lot to do with unearthing the original Cloverfield monster. This is because of a special nectar embedded in the drink that could only be found on the deep ocean floor, and its extraction is what awoke...

'Captain Nemo' Will Be Helmed by 'Wolverine' Director James Mangold

Posted: 26 Feb 2016 01:30 PM PST

Hollywood works in very strange ways sometimes. Case in point: how did a novel by a French writer, first published in 1870, suddenly become the source material for two competing potential blockbusters? Back in September, director Bryan Singer announced that 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, based on the classic novel by Jules Verne, would be his next project after X-Men: Apocalypse hits theaters on May 27. Rick Sordelet and Dan Studeny wrote the screenplay that got a green light for production, drawn from a story by them and Singer. Initially it wasn't clear which studio would be distributing the film, but earlier this month 20th Century Fox officially boarded the project, with production aiming to begin in the fall. Singer noted that his version would feature "not only...

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice: Reportedly, Ben Affleck, who stars in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, "would go into wardrobe and get all suited up for the day in his Batman suit. Then he would sit around reworking the script. Ben wasn’t thrilled with it and would find himself on multiple occasions fixing it the day of.” That's according to a single source, so take it with a grain of salt. The movie opens in theaters on March 25. [USMagazine]   Cloverfield 3: Producer J.J. Abrams has described 10 Cloverfield Lane as a "blood relative" to 2008's Cloverfield and now has teased another.
