Oscar Predictions 2016: Who Will Win Best Actress? Posted: There are only a few days until the 2016 Oscars are finally underway, which means it's time to firm up those predictions and get your ballot all ready to go. This week, leading up to film's biggest night of the year, Moviefone's editors will be revealing our predictions in the ceremony's biggest categories. Let's start with a Best Actress. The nominees are: Cate Blanchett, "Carol" Brie Larson, "Room" Jennifer Lawrence, "Joy" Charlotte Rampling, "45 Years" Saoirse Ronan, "Brooklyn" Here, we've filled you in on who we think will win, as well as who we feel truly deserves to take home that coveted golden statue. Tim Hayne Who Will Win: Brie Larson for "Room." She's a lock at this point. She's already won the Golden Globe, SAG Award, and BAFTA for Best Actress (the trifecta!), so if she loses, it's gonna be a shocker -- and the Academy doesn't do shockers. Her stiffest competition is Cate Blanchett, who's already won Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress, and the buzz around her Oscar-nominated performance in "Carol" is quickly fading. Plus, the Academy loves an ingenue, and Brie Larson has ingenue written all over her. Who Should Win: Brie Larson. Have you seen "Room"? Because that's all it takes to know she delivered the best performance of 2015. Phil Pirrello Who Will Win: Brie Larson. Who Should Win: Brie Larson. Up against actors Cate Blanchett and Jennifer Lawrence — who can basically score a nomination just by showing up — Larson emerged early on as a frontrunner with her compelling, and at times unlikable, portrayal of a mother held captive with her son in a room for years. Larson is scary-good at delivering on the role's emotional and physical demands, creating a character you can't help but root for — even when the pressures of raising a young child in these conditions get the better of her. Rachel Horner Who Will Win: Brie Larson. Even though I would love Saoirse Ronan to win for "Brooklyn," it's going to Brie Larson this year for "Room." She's the clear frontrunner and I would be legitimately shocked if it went to anyone else. Who Should Win: Brie Larson. She put on a great performance that was vastly different than what we've usually seen her in. She deserves it. Alana Altmann Who Will Win: Brie Larson, considering she's the trophy queen of the season thus far. Blanchett may be an Oscar fave, but her "Carol" performance hasn't garnered the accolades we all thought it would early on. Who Should Win: Brie Larson. Her gripping portrayal of a mother fighting for survival was the most original and raw performance of the bunch. The vast emotional range she was able to showcase is an acting force to be reckoned with. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
'Lip Sync Battle Jr.' Spinoff Coming to Spike, Nickelodeon Posted: Spike is expanding its "Lip Sync Battle" brand with a new special aimed at the massively popular show's younger viewers. The network will partner with sister station Nickelodeon to make "Lip Sync Battle Jr.," a one-off special set to air on both networks sometime later this year. In a press release, Spike said the spinoff special "will celebrate kids' love of music and comedy featuring the battles viewers have come to know and love with new variety elements designed to let the little ones shine. The series will be a fresh take on Spike's star-studded series." It's unclear at this point if "Jr." will use Nickelodeon stars as its celeb contestants, or if everyday kids will have the chance to participate. But with the success of other reality shows that have gone with a kiddie format -- like "MasterChef Junior" or "Project Runway Junior" -- it makes sense for Spike to branch out, too. According to "LSB" executive producers Casey Patterson and Jay Peterson, it was the viral sensation's "multigenerational appeal" among viewers (an average of 4 million tune in every week, and the series has racked up over 500 million online views) that inspired this new special. "On the long list of wonderful surprises about 'Lip Sync Battle' is our family co-viewing," Patterson and Peterson said in a statement. " ... [T]he whole 'Lip Sync Battle' family is very excited about developing a new music based, comedy variety format to showcase how much our 'Lip Sync Battle' kids rock! It's all the fun of 'Lip Sync Battle,' only smaller." In addition to the "Lip Sync Battle Jr." special, Spike's parent company, Viacom, is also developing what it dubs "special editions of 'Lip Sync Battle' events." Stay tuned for more info. 7 Things We Need to See in 'Deadpool 2' Posted: "Deadpool" is killing it at the box office right now, but if they want the sequel to do even better, they need to seriously up their game -- and their budget. What's New on Netflix, TV, Digital, and DVD/Blu-ray This Week: February 22-28 Posted: At a loss for what to watch this week? From new DVDs and Blu-rays, to what's streaming on Netflix, we've got you covered. New on DVD and Blu-ray "Spotlight" Not-so-bold prediction: "Spotlight" will win Best Picture at the Oscars this Sunday. Maybe. Maybe not. The story of the Boston Globe reporters who exposed widespread child abuse by Catholic priests is a frontrunner to win the top honor. Whether it does win or not, it's out on Blu-ray and DVD on February 23. The discs include "Uncovering the Truth: A Spotlight Team Roundtable," with the real-life Spotlight team reuniting 14 years later for a roundtable discussion about the challenges they faced, and how the shocking story continues to impact the world. You can also watch the bonus featurettes "Spotlight: A Look Inside" and "The State of Journalism." "The Good Dinosaur" What if dinosaurs never became extinct and lived at the same time as humans? Disney/Pixar shows what could've happened in this heartwarming adventure, which arrives on Blu-ray, Digital HD, DVD, and Disney Movies Anywhere on February 23. The home releases come with tons of special features, including "Sanjay's Super Team" for all versions. The Blu-ray and Digital also include a dozen other features, including commentary, deleted scenes, and several fun featurettes. Here's a taste: "Fargo" Season 2 Season 1 was great, and Season 2 (out February 23) was even better. Head back to 1979 Minnesota with Patrick Wilson's young Lou Solverson (played by Keith Carradine in Season 1) as he attempts to solve multiple murders with unexpected connections. The stellar cast includes Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons, Jean Smart, and Ted Danson, and their story is definitely worth a marathon viewing session. New Video on Demand, Rental Streaming, and Digital Only "Room" Brie Larson is *thisclose* to a lock for Best Actress for her role as Ma in this heartwarming/heartbreaking drama, out on Digital HD this week and on disc March 1. This is mostly a two-person story, following Ma, who was abducted as a teen, and Jack (Jacob Tremblay, winner of ALL hearts) the 5-year-old son she bore while trapped in a shed the two just call "Room." It's not a spoiler to say they escape, since that's a big part of the story, but it's not the ending, it's just the beginning, as Ma (who does have her own name) tries to readjust to life in the real world and Jack struggles to understand anything outside Room. "Victor Frankenstein" James McAvoy and Daniel Radcliffe could do anything and we'd be 100 percent down for it, whether it's the best movie of the year or not. This horror film didn't make many top 10 lists, but the thriller follows scientist of legend Victor Frankenstein (McAvoy) and his brilliant protégé Igor Strausman (Radcliffe) as they try to cope with a well-intentioned but monstrous experiment gone wrong. It's out on Digital HD on February 23, with the discs coming March 8. The Digital comes with deleted scenes, "The Making of Victor Frankenstein," galleries, and the theatrical trailer. "In the Heart of the Sea" Chris Hemsworth stars in this 1820-set historical drama, which inspired author Herman Melville to write that whale of a tale, "Moby-Dick." Ron Howard directed the Essex's harrowing true story of storms, starvation, despair, and hope, and it's out n Digital February 23. The DVD and Blu-ray arrive March 8. "Day Out of Days" Alexia Landeau, Melanie Griffith, Cheyenne Jackson, Eddie Izzard, Bellamy Young, and Vincent Kartheiser star in this story of feminism, ageism, and staying relevant in Hollywood. Directed by Zoe R. Cassavetes (daughter of John Cassavetes and Gena Rowlands), "Day Out of Days" arrives on Digital HD/VOD on February 23. Landeau plays Mia Roarke, a 40-year-old actress who faces the reality of an industry that no longer wants her around. Struggling to recapture relevance in the youth-obsessed industry, Mia is forced to confront her situation and determine what her next role in life will be. Check out this exclusive film clip featuring Eddie Izzard and Alexia Landeau. Warning, there's a brief flash of naughty bits! New on Netflix "Fuller House" (Netflix Original) It's time to welcome the Tanners home! Stream Season 1 of this "Full House" revival on February 26. The story focuses on Candace Cameron Bure's D.J. Tanner, who is now a single mom of three boys. Her sister Stephanie (Jodie Sweetin) and best friend Kimmy Gibbler (Andrea Barber) move in to help her out. Most of the original cast is back -- including Bob Saget, John Stamos, Dave Coulier, and Lori Loughlin -- but not the Olsen twins, although Michelle's absence will be explained. "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny" (Netflix Original) Way back in 2000, Ang Lee directed a movie called "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," which redefined the martial arts genre, including a woman's place in it. Now the sequel is about to be released in the U.S. on February 26. This film brings back Michelle Yeoh, and adds a bunch of new characters, including a new protégé for Yeoh's Yu Shu Lien. It also adds dialogue in English, for a broader audience. Check out the latest trailer: "Theo Von" (Netflix Original) Comedian Theo Von is the latest recipient of a Netflix special, which arrives February 26. Here's the synopsis: "Southern charmer Theo Von offers up a twisted take on his dating mishaps, meeting Brad Pitt, chasing down fugitive chimpanzees, and more." TV Worth Watching Academy Awards (Sunday on ABC at 8:30 p.m.) Whoever wins -- besides Leo, who is a given, even if it's just so we can FINALLY stop hearing that it's "his time" -- this should be an interesting Oscars. Some celebs may be boycotting the show, but plenty of others signed up as presenters, and you know the nominees won't be missing it. It's possible the #OscarsSoWhite controversy will just help with ratings, since people will want to hear what host Chris Rock says, and they'll want to hear Leo's speech (and see Kate Winslet's tears of pride from the audience). "The X-Files" (Monday on FOX at 8 p.m.) We were only promised six episodes and -- somehow -- it's already that time. Whhhyyyyy? There's so much more to tell! At the very least, they should give us more monster-of-the-week stories, since they never go out of style. The February 22 episode, written by Chris Carter, is called "My Struggle II" -- a follow-up to Episode 1, "My Struggle." The struggle is real, kids. Here's the FOX synopsis: "The investigations that Mulder and Scully previously began with conspiracy theorist and web-TV show host Tad O'Malley (Joel McHale) seem to have awakened powerful enemies. A widespread panic begins as people all over the country suddenly start falling gravely ill, and Scully must look within to try and find a cure. Meanwhile, Mulder confronts the man whom he believes to be behind it all, but another figure from Mulder and Scully's past may prove to be the key to their salvation." "Superstore" (Monday on NBC at 8 p.m.) It's a shame this freshman half-hour comedy had its episode count lowered from 13 to 11, because it's better than a lot of the junk out there. We could use more of it, not less. Maybe there's just too much competition on Monday nights, but it's worth checking out this America Ferrera-led show about the employees of a Walmart-like store called Cloud 9. It's refreshing to follow likable characters in the kind of workplace that just naturally produces crazy stories. Episode 11, the Season 1 finale, is called "Labor," so it sounds like Cheyenne's baby may finally meet its crazy teen parents. Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. 'Once Upon a Time' Celebrates Return With These 7 Minutes in Heaven (and Hell) Posted: ABC wants you to go to hell with "Once Upon a Time," and even though that may not sound very nice, we're looking forward to it. It seems like "Once" has been on the air forever, and yet gone for way too long on its Season 5 winter break. ABC is gearing up for the midseason premiere on Sunday, March 6, which also marks its 100th episode of the series. In "Souls of the Departed," the group will travel to the Underworld to try and save Hook. While there, they'll meet Greg Germann's Hades and come in contact with many familiar faces. But before we head to the Underworld, head back in time to relive 100 episodes of heroes, villains, and adventures in this loving retrospective: Ah, memories. TVLine just shared some great spoilers on what's ahead in the winter premiere. Here are just three tantalizing teases:

Disney's Live-Action 'The Jungle Book': What You Need to Know Posted: The first in-depth look at Disney's "The Jungle Book" was unveiled in Los Angeles last month, at a special presentation hosted by Walt Disney Studios and director Jon Favreau. We were able to exclusively experience the advanced 3D tech the film was being shot with and get a sense of how the adaptation of the beloved Disney classic aims to stand apart from the original. Held at Hollywood's El Capitan theater, the event's emcee was none other than the director himself. Favreau introduced a selection of preview clips and delivered insight into what made now the right time to remake "The Jungle Book." As it turns out, producer Alan Horn grew up on the Mowgli books by Rudyard Kipling, and Favreau grew up a fan of Walt Disney's animated classic. Together, they wanted to collaborate on a project to push technology forward and agreed that "The Jungle Book" had the characters, emotion, and music to make it the best option. Dolby Extended Dynamic Range Laser Projection is the state-of-the-art technology that Disney and Favreau are using to bring "The Jungle Book" to audiences. It boasts photo-real imaging to recreate textures and environmental detail. Favreau's adaptation seeks to bring a tangible cinematic world as far as our eyes can perceive. In the test footage we got to see, the CG (computer generated) elements, like water, lighting, and even wind, were astounding. It was hard to tell a rendered scene apart from real-life images. The process is advancing with animals as well, as now fur and skin can be recreated with near photo-realistic perfection. Immersing an audience -- and an actor -- in a believable CG world has it's challenges, but Disney uses an effective technique that is part practical and part optical illusion. The way the shots are set up goes something like this: Neel Sethi (Mowgli) performs in an active foreground on a practical set (i.e. real life), then the CG animators work to make the background and animal characters fully realized through the technology, seamlessly blending the real with the imaginary. The sights and sounds of the jungle previewed showed off how far the tech has really come since James Cameron's "Avatar." In a scene in which Shere Khan (Idris Elba) begins to sniff out Mowgli's presence, Sethi's presence among the CG characters and environment is hard to discern. The way that Favreau places physical set pieces around the actor creates a sense of real space. Meaning, if he hides behind a rock, the rock is actually there. In a scene in which Shere Khan chases Mowgli through a ravine, the mud the young actor runs through is real. So the trick to blurring the lines between a real and a CG space is in having the actor be affected by the environment, like the mud caked on his feet as he hops on a CG animal and escapes. The ability to really sell these scenes to an audience is a testament to young Sethi's acting skills. He completely embodies Mowgli with charisma and real, child-like wonder. There's a reason he was the kid -- out of 2,000 who auditioned -- to get the part. Sethi's acting further elevates the CG techniques Disney and Favreau are pushing to advance. Keep moving forward is a Disney mantra Favreau lives by, and he believes that, if Walt were alive today, he, too, would be experimenting with new, cutting-edge tech. We also got a small glimpse of Bill Murray's work as the voice of Baloo, singing his signature tune and nailing the lovable bear's endearing slyness. As Favreau explained, the key to using music in "The Jungle Book" this time around is to only use it when it makes sense for the movie. Favreau consulted with composer Richard Sherman, but no songs beyond "Bare Necessities" were confirmed to be in the movie. But how can you not have Christopher Walken, who will be playing King Louie, sing? In the last clip presented, we got our first real look at Mowgli meeting the King of the Monkeys. The reveal of the gentle giant hilariously balances action with comedy. Of course, Walken is a riot. A fun tidbit Favreau shared is their solution to Louie being an orangutan in the animated film, which is inaccurate since, well, orangutans don't live in India. This time around, they made Louie a mythical creature believed to have inhabited India; he's basically a Sasquatch with orangutan-like qualities. Animators took special liberties with Walken's mo-cap performance to imbue the character with the actor's expressions. It can be a bit eerie, but it works really well.Near the end of the presentation, Favreau was joined on-stage by visual effects supervisor Rob Legato, who had previously worked on "Avatar." From what we've seen so far, Disney's "The Jungle Book" is shaping up to be a must-see. Let's be clear: Walt Disney Studios' adaptation won't be a shot-for-shot remake of the original, but uses the animated classic as a foundation, expanding Mowgli's story through Kipling's original tales in a stunning new format. You can see for yourself when Disney's "The Jungle Book" opens April 15th, 2016. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Johnny Depp Says He Smells 'Really Good' Despite Looking Like 'a Hobo' Posted: In case you were wondering, Johnny Depp doesn't stink. Or at least he says he doesn't. Guess we should just take his word for it? Even he knows he can look like the kind of person who hasn't washed in a month, but he's actually the ambassador for Dior Sauvage and just presented an award for 2016 fragrance of the year at Saturday's 2nd Annual Beauty Awards in Hollywood.
He's good enough, he's smart enough, and gosh darn it, people like his scent! All kidding aside, Depp collaborated with Sauvage to create "their first fragrance for fellas since the launch of Dior Homme in 2008." And he thanked the awards show for also being a benefit for the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles, a charity close to his heart. So he smells good and he has a big heart. But, yeah, he does look like a very rich hobo sometimes. Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Cap and Iron Man Are Now Fighting Over Deadpool, and It's Awesome Posted: The civil war is not-so-civil when it comes to "Deadpool." "Captain America: Civil War" is already in the can, but Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. are still trying to recruit for Team Cap and Team Iron Man. And they both want Ryan Reynolds's hot new superhero in town on their side. Chris Evans fired the first shot with an innocent compliment to Ryan Reynolds, which the "Deadpool" star retweeted with his team choice:
No word yet from Hello Kitty, but she's probably Team Black Widow, right? Deadpool is a Marvel Comics character, like Cap and Iron Man, even if "Deadpool" is part of 20th Century Fox's "X-Men" film series. They are all kind of like kissing cousins, no? "Civil War" comes out May 6, and it has high hopes to do even better than "Deadpool" with critics and audiences. One star even thinks it has a shot at a Best Picture Oscar. Want more stuff like this? DC's 'Justice League: Part One' Announces Filming Start Date Posted: Move over, Marvel, the DC Universe is juicing up for justice in a big way. "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" is coming out March 25, and just a couple of weeks after that, Warner Bros. will start filming "Justice League: Part One." Director Zack Snyder told Entertainment Weekly they start shooting April 11 at the Warner Bros. Leavesden studios in England, where "Wonder Woman" is currently filming for a June 2017 release. "Justice League" will be released in two parts, with the first scheduled for a November 17, 2017 release. Snyder talked to EW about the three-year gap between "Man of Steel" and "Batman v Superman," due to creative planning for all of the stories to come. "The studio really wants us to try and pace it up, as far as — now we have an idea where we're going." He added that "It was a little bit of an 'about time' moment" for "Justice League," but noted that it's not just an easy thing, creatively, to get all of the superheroes together in a world where they can exist. But now the table has been set, and "Justice League" is almost ready to roll. Here's the lineup that was announced by DC back in 2014: March 25, 2016 - "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" August 5, 2016 - "Suicide Squad" June 23, 2017 - "Wonder Woman" November 17, 2017 - "The Justice League: Part One" March 23, 2018 - "The Flash July 27, 2018 - "Aquaman" April 5, 2019 - "Shazam" June 14, 2019 - "The Justice League: Part Two" April 3, 2020 - "Cyborg" June 19, 2020 - "The Green Lantern" Don't swear by those dates, though, since things can change. Emma Watson Is Taking a Year Off From Acting for Two Inspiring Reasons Posted: Hermione would be so proud of Emma Watson. The now 25-year-old actress is really putting serious thought into the kind of person she wants to be, and how she can inspire others to broaden their perspectives. Watson recently filmed two major movies ("Beauty and the Beast" and "The Circle") and she told feminist icon bell hooks she plans to take the next year off from acting to focus on personal development and feminism outreach.
Well, wow! As Hooks responded, it certainly sounds like a lot and may not leave a lot of downtime. But Watson still has to promote her movies in the next year (including the much-anticipated "Beauty and the Beast" movie, which comes out March 17, 2017) and she'll probably still go to music festivals like she normally does, 'cause it's not like you have to choose between Feminist and Fun Person. Still, props to Emma Watson for continuing to use her (magical) powers for good. Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Donald Trump Walls Off Immigrants in Eerily Perfect 'Game of Thrones' Mashup Posted: Winter is Trumping over on YouTube in a three-minute mashup that may change how you view "Game of Thrones." We all know Donald Trump wants to build a wall at the Mexico border, and HBO's show doesn't just have a place called The Wall, guarded by Jon Snow and the Night's Watch, it has also featured several other instances of insiders wanting to keep outsiders away. YouTuber huw parkinson cleverly combined a few scenes in this mashup, which starts with asylum-seeker Daenerys Targaryen getting shut down by Trump outside Qarth, and also includes Trump using wildfire to stop Stannis on the Blackwater -- he did say he wanted to bring back worse than waterboarding! -- Trump muttering complaints about the Pope to King's Landing's small council, and Trump defying Jon Snow's direct order at The Wall. It's hilarious and fitting, and of course features a political debate in the comments section, but whatever -- just watch for the entertainment value: The real "Game of Thrones" returns Sunday, April 24. 'Pete's Dragon' Looks Very Different in Disney's First Teaser Trailer Posted: If "Jungle Book," "Tarzan," "The BFG," "The Good Dinosaur," and "How to Train Your Dragon" got together to film a movie, it might look a bit like Disney's first trailer for "Pete's Dragon." Disney's Pete's Dragon - Official Teaser Trailer Here's the new movie's synopsis:

Anthony Mackie: 'Civil War' May Be First Superhero Movie Up for Best Picture Posted: The 2016 Oscars are this Sunday, February 28, but the 2017 Academy Awards may just nominate "Captain America: Civil War" for Best Picture. Oooooor they may not. But Anthony Mackie, who plays Sam Wilson/Falcon, is throwing superlatives around about the third Cap movie, which comes out May 6. Here's what he told BBC Radio (via Heroic Hollywood):
Oh, really? The Oscars push is interesting, but this interview was also singled out by outlets for the mention of Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner/The Hulk). Up to this point, The Hulk wasn't expected to be in "Civil War," but Mackie also said in the interview that "They tie each story into the next movie," which Heroic Hollywood took as a possible hint that the Hulk will be in a post-credits scene to tie into "Thor: Ragnarok." Hulk or no Hulk, the hype is real on "Civil War" so we'll have to wait and see if critics and audiences agree about the high level of awesome. Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. The 2016 Oscar Nominees' 19 Worst Movies Posted: Amidst all the Oscars glamour and heartfelt speeches, let's not forget that an actor's life is not all awards and ovations. It's very often extremely crappy movies that are best forgotten. Sorry, 2016 Oscar nominees! We're here to remind everyone you starred in these sub-par movies. From Leonardo DiCaprio's close encounter with Critters, to Kate Winslet in whatever the hell "Movie 43" was, here are 19 movies that this year's nominees probably wish they could un-happen. 'The Walking Dead' Season 6, Episode 10 Recap: More Than a Feeling Posted: You know you're in for a good hour of television when the first thing you hear is the opening guitar riff to Boston's "More Than a Feeling," and that was certainly the case on tonight's installment of "The Walking Dead." The episode was filled with inspired music cues – including a great Old 97's tune that scored Daryl and Rick's scavenging road trip – but that first scene really set the tone for the episode, and almost read to me like the beginning of a romantic comedy (leading man gets ready for his day to the strains of classic rock, banters with his children, teases his live-in It says a lot about how well the writers have developed Rick and Michonne's friendship over the past few seasons that it was both surprising and yet made perfect sense when they hooked up at the end of the hour. Alexandria's co-constables have drawn considerably closer recently, and not just because they're both single, attractive, and happen to share a roof. They're both well-versed in weaponry, they've both suffered tremendous loss, but neither suffers any fools; they also push each other, with Rick urging Michonne to look out for herself, while Michonne tries to open Rick's eyes to the inherent goodness and promise still lurking about in this zombie-ridden world. Rick's recent willingness to adopt that point of view – which really comes into play this week with his upbeat "law of averages" refrain – is perhaps partially why they finally fell into bed together tonight, after countless desperate pleas from the Richonne 'shippers in the audience (who were no doubt doing their happy dances when Rick's latest love interest bit the big one last week). After six seasons of running, rebuilding, and then running again, you'd think Rick Grimes would be a broken man (and at times, he certainly was). Instead, after the Alexandrians proved themselves worthy of saving last week, the sheriff's deputy decided that maybe this place can be a permanent home after all, and is now more invested than ever in making his current situation a lasting one. "If there's still people out there, we should bring them in," Rick tells Daryl earlier in the episode, despite Daryl's recent change of heart on the subject. "... You all tried to tell me. So shut up. 'Cause I'm finally listening." With Michonne, it looks like Rick finally has a worthy partner with which to build such a future. While Rick and Jessie's attraction was based purely on lust, Rick and Michonne's coupling springs from a strong foundation of love, one that blossomed over time from platonic to sexual. From their breezy back-and-forth about toothpaste and their cute little handshake before Rick left for his run, to their easy, comfortable nudging and teasing of each other while slouched on the couch at the end of the day ("Oh, so you had a day." "Yep. All on account of your dental hygiene."), it was clear that these two people cared for each other immensely. Eventually, their conversation culminated in some accidental – then totally intentional – hand-holding, and progressed to tentative kissing, then full-on making out (excuse Rick while he removes his gun – loved that little touch), then some off-screen sex. (This show is still on basic cable, after all.) The camera picks back up on the couple entwined in bed, looking like they've been doing this for years. (And really, it seems like they should have been.) But sadly, Jesus had to come along to ruin the beautiful moment. Stupid Jesus. No, the son of God hasn't suddenly joined the cast, but another enigmatic survivor (nee: Paul Monroe), who's decided that it's cool to take the Lord's name as a nickname, so long as he also sports flowing locks and a long beard and knows how to strike a crucifix pose. Rick and Daryl run into the man – or rather, he runs into them – while out on a supply run earlier in the episode, where they score a truck full of food to bring back to the starting-to-starve Alexandrians. Rick (who deduces that Jesus is lying about not having a camp, based on his clean appearance and well-kempt facial hair) starts to ask the squirrelly survivor his patented Three Questions, testing the waters to see if Jesus is suitable to join their ranks, but Daryl quickly shuts him down. "No," he says, citing that self-important nickname. "Guy calls himself Jesus." Jesus doesn't feel like blessing Alexandria with his presence anyway, though, running off and calling out to Daryl and Rick, "This is the next world. Hope it's good to you guys." Unfortunately, this Jesus isn't as charitable as the biblical one, since in the commotion he sneakily swipes Rick's keys and steals their food-filled vehicle for himself. Rick and Daryl sprint to chase him down (Jesus helpfully left behind a bunch of burnt-rubber tracks, like footprints in the sand) and catch up to him while he's changing a busted tire. After a struggle (this guy is a lot better at fighting than he looks), they eventually are able to tie him up, with Rick suggesting he can undo the ropes easily after they leave him in the dust. But Jesus works in mysterious ways, and somehow almost immediately escapes his ties, climbing up on the top of the truck and hitching a ride, unbeknownst to Rick and Daryl. As they make a detour to check out an abandoned barn, they hear Jesus making a ruckus on the roof, and Rick slams on the brakes to throw him off. A chase – with Rick in the truck and Daryl on foot – ensues, underscored by another excellent musical cue, as our survivors seek some serious retribution. In an unexpected move, Jesus saves Daryl from an oncoming walker, but he also hits the truck's gearshift, sending it and all its food plunging into a nearby pond. Later, he once again inexplicably, infuriatingly escapes his ties when they bring him back to Alexandria (and he walks in on Rick and Michonne, spoiling the afterglow). As of right now, it seems like his character's sole purpose is to cause trouble, and I'll be curious to see just how much more chaos he creates in the coming weeks. He's clearly quite clever (setting off those firecrackers as a distraction while he stole the truck was pretty inventive), and also adept at BS. But is he dangerous? Perhaps he's part of Negan's crew, who harassed Daryl, Sasha, and Abraham in the midseason premiere? Or maybe he's simply just a weird dude in need of a savior himself. "I think you know I'm not a bad guy," Jesus tells Rick and Daryl at one point. Of course, on "The Walking Dead," it's almost always safe to assume the worst until proven otherwise. As I mentioned last week, Rick has picked an inopportune time to become an optimist, and Jesus will surely complicate things even more. We can only hope that the sheriff's newfound happiness isn't short-lived, but I think we all know better. Other thoughts: - Kudos to the shot-blocking of that final scene, in which Rick and Michonne, naked, spring out of bed and brandish their weapons. (With all their naughty bits surreptitiously covered, of course.) Jesus got quite the eyeful. - Another clue that things were bound to progress between Rick and Michonne: Rick leaving his wedding ring sitting on his dresser at the beginning of the episode. I can't remember him ever taking it off before now (please correct me if I'm wrong). He even left it on when he was making out with Jessie. - Carl has a heart-to-heart with Michonne about not killing zombified Deanna, who shambled up to Carl and Enid in the woods, and who Carl refused to take down, because he wanted to let someone she loved (i.e., Spencer) do it. Without saying so explicitly, he references having to kill his own mother-turned-walker, who died after giving birth to Judith. Carl lets Michonne know that he'd do the same for her; Michonne says she would, too, and they share a sweet hug. So Carl basically just made Michonne his new mommy (and gave her his blessing to boink his dad), right? - Speaking of Spencer, he wanders off into the woods to do just as Carl suspected, having spotting his reanimated mother during the night of the battle to take back the town. Michonne accompanies him on his quest, telling him that she liked Deanna and didn't want to see her son die. You have so many better people to be concerned about, Michonne. - Maybe Deanna was wandering around the woods because she was looking for the bathroom? - Alexandria is going through a food shortage, demonstrated by Rick boring another hole into his belt (aside from the notch he puts in his belt after his romp with Michonne. Hey-o!), and Denise prioritizing food over medical supplies. Eugene says they're in a "scary" situation, and suggests Rick and Daryl be on the lookout for sorghum, an oft-overlooked grain that could be extremely helpful in planting future crops. And whaddya know, Daryl and Rick drive right by a barn marked SORGHUM, in one of the biggest - Maggie really wants to talk to Enid. Enid is furiously journaling and does not care. I do not care, either. - I can't wait to see the look on Father Gabriel's face when Jesus introduces himself. - Aside from Rick and Michonne's interactions, there were lots of little character moments and conversations that I loved during this hour: Daryl pleading with Rick to "please, don't" play that awful rockabilly song in the car; the twosome shotgunning a can of Orange Crush together like a couple of bros at a frat party; Daryl and Denise's exchange in which she asked him to get her some soda as a surprise for Tara ("What the hell's pop?"), then hems and haws over its importance (definitely behind food, medicine, gas, batteries, books for the kids, and clothes – "It's just, if you see it, if it happens to, you know, be right there"); Eugene's use of the phrase "hunky-dunky"; Daryl giving Jesus the finger, putting his feet up on the dash, and shouting "So long, you prick!" as they pulled away. I could go on. This episode reminded me a lot of season five's 13th installment, "Forget," and it turns out that it was co-written by that episode's screenwriter, Corey Reed. I really enjoyed these smaller, slice-of-life interactions, and I hope we get more of them as the season progresses. Sometimes it's important to remember that these characters are all still people, not just zombie-killing (or Wolf-killing, or future-Negan-killing) machines.
