Watch Melisandre From 'Game of Thrones' Ruin a Baby Shower

Posted:

Game of ThronesNights with a newborn baby can be tough, but probably not "dark and full of terrors."

In a hilarious sketch on "Late Night With Seth Meyers," the host invites his "old college friend" Melisandre from "Game of Thrones" to his baby shower, and well, she's not really into sweet party games and cooing over presents.

When Seth and his wife say they're waiting to find out the baby's gender until it's born, Melisandre (Carice van Houten) warns, "Pray that it's a son so the Lord of Light can look down upon him with favor," she added when the subject of the baby's gender was broached. "And if it's a girl, lock it away in a dark tower forever and hope it's not consumed by grayscale."
"You're always saying you don't have any female friends, and this is why," an exasperated Seth tells the sorceress. Oh, and telling the story about the time you had a demon baby ... probably isn't going to endear you anybody, Mel.

Kevin Hart, The Rock Hosting 2016 MTV Movie Awards

Posted:

Central IntelligenceKevin Hart and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson are hosting this year's MTV Movie Awards on April 10. The actors are starring together in the action comedy "Central Intelligence," which hits theaters June 17.

The ceremony is taking a page from "Grease Live!" and pre-taping the show live across multiple stages on the Warner Bros. backlot the day before broadcast.

"We want to do a big, brave thing to celebrate movies," executive producer Casey Patterson said. "We love Kevin and Dwayne for doing big, risky, bold things. Most award shows play it safe. They're the right guys to take big swings."

A live audience will watch the actors host the ceremony outside, during both the day and evening.

"It's an honor to be hosting the 'MTV Movie Awards' with a guy who's not only one of the funniest guys on the planet, but who's often mistaken as my twin, Kevin Hart," said Johnson. "We live for our fans and promise to make this an epic, historic unforgettable night for them."

Oscars 2016: How to Pick Best Picture and Win Your Oscar Pool

Posted:

When it comes to predicting a Best Picture Oscar winner, should we believe the numbers, or should we believe the buzz?

That's the question this week after "The Revenant" swept the BAFTAs, the British Academy Awards. The frontier drama certainly has the buzz. The momentum is on its side, not just from its five prizes picked up in London -- including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor (near-lock Oscar hopeful Leonardo DiCaprio), Best Cinematography, and Best Sound -- but also from Alejandro González Iñárritu's historic win a week earlier at the Directors Guild Awards, when the "Revenant" and "Birdman" filmmaker became the first person ever to win two DGA prizes in a row.

But the stats that usually serve as reliable barometers of Academy sentiment? They tend to tell a different story.
"Spotlight" is still in the race because it won Best Ensemble at the Screen Actors Guild awards; "The Revenant" wasn't even nominated for that prize, the equivalent of Best Picture, by the group whose members make up the largest branch of the Academy. "Spotlight" also won Best Original Screenplay this past weekend at the Writers Guild of America awards and at the BAFTAs.

And then there's "Revenant's" biggest rival, "The Big Short." It won the American Cinema Editors' ACE Eddie Award. Last weekend, it also won the Best Adapted Screenplay prize from the BAFTAs and the WGA, a feat it's likely to duplicate at the Oscars. "Revenant" isn't even nominated for screenplay, perhaps under the mistaken notion that it's not that big a challenge to write a screenplay that has minimal dialogue. Still, how can a movie win an Academy Award for Best Picture if it's not even a contender for Best Screenplay? That almost never happens, although one of the few times it did was DiCaprio's "Titanic."

The biggest asset "Big Short" has going into the Oscars is its PGA victory. In the award's 25-year history, it's predicted the Best Picture Oscar winner 19 times. In the six years since the PGA adopted a preferential ballot like the Academy's, it's anticipated the Academy victor all six times.
In the statistics-based reckoning, the BAFTAs usually don't figure at all. (The Hollywood-based Academy may love British actors and British movies, but do its voters really care what British film professionals choose as their favorites?) The American Academy has agreed with the British one on Best Film only 26 out of 68 times. In the recent past -- in the years since the BAFTAs moved their ceremony to precede the Oscars -- the BAFTAs anticipated the Oscar winner for Best Picture eight out of 15 times. The Brits have called six of the last seven Best Picture Oscar contests correctly; the only one they got wrong was last year's when they picked "Boyhood" over "Birdman." It's not out of the realm of possibility that the BAFTAs honored "Revenant" and Iñárritu this year to make up for last year's snub.

Still, there are some numbers in favor of "Revenant." It has the most Oscar nominations (12), which suggests not only a possible sweep but also enough good will across the Academy's various branches to earn a Best Picture win. And the DGA winner has also won Best Picture 53 out of 67 times.

No director has ever seen two of his movies win Best Picture in a row. But if the momentum for "Revenant" is really that strong, Iñárritu could become the first to reach that milestone. Statistics, after all, aren't ironclad rules, just prediction tools. They're accurate and valid... until they're not.
Sure, "Big Short" has the all-important PGA victory. But it doesn't have momentum, having lost big at the SAGs, the DGA, and BAFTAs (where it picked up only the writing prize out of its five nominations). "Spotlight" won at the SAGs, but that was three weeks ago. Since then, it's won the two writing awards, but otherwise, not much momentum there, either.

And there are other strikes against "Big Short" and "Spotlight." Comedies seldom win, even smart, satirical black comedies like "Big Short." Movies without nominated lead performances seldom win, which is another advantage "Revenant" has over its rivals. Finally, there's the foregone-conclusion argument: if the rank-and-file of Hollywood had liked "Big Short" or "Spotlight" more, they would have won more guild prizes and earned more Oscar nominations than they did -- and they'd have buzz as well as numbers on their side. We could still get a Best Picture/Best Director split, like we got twice in the past three years.
Iñárritu now seems a lock for Best Director, but there's still a chance that "Big Short" or (less likely) "Spotlight" might win Best Picture. It's just a matter of whether the strong statistics in those movies' favor are stronger than the wave of awards love that "Revenant" is currently riding.

One refreshing thing about this year's Best Picture race, aside from how unpredictable it's been, is how little mudslinging there's been. All three of these films are based on historical events, but there's been little grumbling about gross distortions of fact or smeared reputations of real people. That's not to say these movies are scrupulously accurate (they all have taken dramatic liberties), but rather, the focus has been almost entirely on how well each one works -- or doesn't work -- as a movie.

Academy voting ends next week, on Feb. 23. If the voters choose to be influenced by either the buzz or the weight of history, so be it. But at least no one's loudly trying to sway them based on nasty whispers.

'Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt' Season 2 Teaser Is Hashbrown No Filter Awesome

Posted:

unbreakable kimmy schmidt, kimmy schmidt, season 2, teaser, netflixThe first teaser for the upcoming second season of "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" is finally here, and while it doesn't tell us anything about the new episodes, it's still got us plenty excited for more adventures with our favorite former cult member.

Modeled after high-fashion runway campaigns (swapping in "ready to watch" for "ready to wear"), the short clip features Kimmy (Ellie Kemper), Titus (Tituss Burgess), and Jacqueline (Jane Krakowski) strutting their stuff to a funky beat, while title cards promote the show's catchphrases as if they were luxury brands. Classics like Hashbrown No Filter, Peeno Noir Caviar, and Stranger Danger Ranger all make cameos, though of course, Kimmy can't stay serious for long, finishing her runway walk with some colorful confetti and her signature glittery sneakers.

The promo ends with a reprise of the show's triumphant theme song, reminding fans that we're all lucky to be alive during the time of "Kimmy," dammit, and it's a miracle that we'll be getting even more of her soon. Check out the infectious clip above.

Season two of "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" debuts on Netflix on April 15.

Harper Lee, 'To Kill a Mockingbird' Author, Dies at 89

Posted:

Bush Awards Presidential Medal of FreedomHarper Lee, the author of literary classic "To Kill a Mockingbird," which became an Oscar-winning film, has died. She was 89.

Lee shot to fame with the 1960 publication of her first novel, "Mockingbird," which was set in Depression-era rural Alabama and revolved around a young girl, Scout, and her virtuous lawyer father, Atticus Finch, who defended a black man falsely accused of rape. The universally beloved tale won the Pulitzer Prize in 1961, and in 2007, Lee was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her work.

In 1962, "Mockingbird" was turned into a hit Hollywood film, starring Gregory Peck. The flick was nominated for eight Oscars -- including Best Picture -- and went on to win three, including the Best Actor statuette for Peck.

Lee first famously submitted the "Mockingbird" manuscript back in 1957, only to have it rejected, and her publisher ask her to rewrite it. That early draft, set after the events of "Mockingbird," eventually morphed into "Go Set a Watchman," the "Mockingbird" sequel -- and Lee's only other published book -- that was finally released in July 2015, amid much controversy and decidedly mixed reviews.

Among the many factors causing concern was the book's shift of Atticus from moral compass to bitter racist, calling into question the character's legacy. Also controversial was how the novel came to be published at all, since Lee famously said she would never release another book, and stuck to that promise for many decades.

In her final years, Lee suffered a stroke and moved in with her sister, Alice, and later, into an assisted-living facility, in her hometown of Monroeville, Alabama. Many observers wondered if Lee had the mental capacity to officially sign off on "Watchman"'s publication, or if the release was the result of Lee's lawyer, Tonja B. Carter, taking advantage of the author's poor health (and the death of Alice, who was previously in charge of Lee's estate).

For her part, Lee released several statements through her lawyer, saying she was "happy as hell" about the publication of "Watchman."

Lee's death comes just one week after Aaron Sorkin announced he would write a "Mockingbird" stage play, the first time that the novel would be adapted for Broadway. The play is set to debut next year.

'John Wick 2' Lands 2017 Release Date, New Title

Posted:

The upcoming sequel to revenge flick "John Wick" has a new title, a new release date, and an exotic new locale.

The follow-up, originally known simply as "John Wick 2," is now called "John Wick: Chapter Two," and is set for release on February 10, 2017. Perhaps it's hoping for some "Deadpool"-sized success in next year's pre-Valentine's Day release slot? (It will have some competition from "Fifty Shades Darker," "The LEGO Batman Movie," and "The Mountain Between Us.")

In "Chapter Two," Keanu Reeves will return as the titular star, an ex-hitman who in the first flick was forced back into action when a group of gangsters broke into his home, beat him up, and killed his dog. Seeking revenge (RIP, adorable puppy), Wick returns to his old, contract-killing ways, taking out goons left and right.

This time, at least part of the action will take place in Rome. Wick will face down a villain played by franchise newcomer Common, who stars as the "head of security for a female crime lord," according to The Hollywood Reporter. No word yet on who's playing the crime lord. (Or if another cute canine will meet an untimely end.)

Emily Blunt May Play Mary Poppins in Disney Sequel: Report

Posted:

2015 National Board Of Review GalaDisney's upcoming follow-up to its classic musical "Mary Poppins" may have found its titular star, with reports indicating that Emily Blunt is in negotiations for the role.

Variety has the scoop that Blunt is in talks to take the high-profile part, and is currently trying to work out scheduling. Blunt and husband John Krasinski recently confirmed that they're expecting their second child, which could complicate filming.

The new "Poppins" project, which was announced last year, had initially been described as definitively not a direct sequel to Disney's original 1964 flick, which was based on the books by P.L. Travers. Rather, this upcoming flick would draw from other stories in Travers's eight-volume series, and pick up about 20 years after the first film's action, in 1920s Depression-era London, telling additional tales of Poppins's adventures with the Banks family. Variety's report does call this upcoming flick a sequel, but that may be more for convenience's sake than exact semantics.

According to the trade, Blunt "has always been the favorite" for the leading role, since she collaborated with "Poppins" director Rob Marshall and producers John DeLuca and Marc Platt on 2014 musical "Into the Woods." Disney is reportedly hoping to make a casting decision soon, so production can start promptly.

If Disney must continue its recent trend of converting all of its classics into new, live-action features, we think Blunt would be an inspired choice to pick up where the incomparable Julie Andrews left off. We'll take this casting news with some cautious optimism and a spoonful of sugar grain of salt for now.
