Super Bowl 50 Is Third Most-Watched Ever With 111.9 Million Viewers Posted: Sunday's showdown between the Denver Broncos and the Carolina Panthers was a low-scoring one, with Denver and Peyton Manning eventually edging Cam Newton's Panthers 24-10. Thanks to that limited action, the broadcast pulled in an average of 111.9 million viewers, good for third place on the all-time Super Bowl ratings chart -- but also the third most-watched program in Nielsen TV history, too. Though that would be a coveted superlative for any other event, the Super Bowl has been known to top itself year after year, and the NFL is probably a bit disappointed that its latest event failed to set any new records. The 2015 game between the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks holds onto its crown, with a whopping 114.4 million viewers, which topped the previous year's then-record-setting 112.2 million viewers. (That 2015 Super Bowl is also the most-watched program in the U.S. of all-time.) Despite failing to reach new heights, Sunday's broadcast still managed to pull in some in jaw-dropping numbers, nabbing a 49 rating and a 73 share among all U.S. TV-viewing households. Not too shabby. CBS's post-Super Bowl offerings also generated some strong -- if not earth-shattering -- results, with "The Late Show With Stephen Colbert" attracting 21.1 million viewers (slightly lower than expectations), and "The Late Late Show With James Corden" notching 4.97 million viewers. Both numbers were new records for each series. [via: The Hollywood Reporter] Photo credit: Getty Images This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Sikh Actor Waris Ahluwalia Barred From Flight Over Turban Posted:
In an interview with the New York Daily News, Ahluwalia, a New York City resident, said that he was singled out for an intensive security screening (denoted by the "SSSS," which stands for Secondary Security Screening Selection, scrawled on his ticket) that involved an invasive pat-down "to the soles of his feet," as well as a bag search and swab test for explosive residue. Here's how the rest of the incident unfolded, per the News: The actor was able to book a later flight on Delta airlines on Monday to return home, but told the News that "he would fly Aero Mexico again if the carrier publicly apologizes and commits to training staff on how to work with Sikhs and to screen passengers with religious headwear." Aero Mexico released a statement about the incident on Monday, though it did not apologize to the actor. The airline said that Ahluwalia "was asked to submit to screening and inspection before boarding, in strict compliance with TSA protocol," and claimed that they attempted to make other travel arrangements on the actor's behalf. "We sincerely regret any inconvenience caused by this incident," the airline's statement added. 'Deadpool' Will Have Two Post-Credits Sequences Posted: That's the word from the film's screenwriter and the artist behind the original "Deadpool" comic series, who both said on social media this weekend that there was an additional top-secret scene awaiting moviegoers that not even those who attended previous fan and critic screenings had seen so far. Writer Rhett Reese teased on Twitter, "There's a second coda that won't arrive 'til the movie screens in theaters."
And artist Artist Rob Liefeld -- who co-created Deadpool with writer Fabian Niecza in the '90s -- also told fans on the social media site that they should stick around for a double dose of post-credits goodies when the flick hits theaters later this week.
We're dying to know what was so special -- and potentially spoilerific -- that the creatives decided to hold it until the actual release day. The wait is almost over: "Deadpool" drops on Friday, February 12. [via: Rhett Reese, Rob Liefeld, h/t Entertainment Weekly] This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Hugh Jackman Treated Again for Skin Cancer, Urges Fans to Use Sunscreen Posted:
If that message sounds familiar, it's because it's one that Jackman has repeated many times over the past few years, following his initial diagnosis of skin cancer in November 2013. The actor had his first treatment for basal-cell carcinoma that month, after his wife, Deborra-Lee Furness, noticed an unusual mark on Jackman's face and encouraged him to get it checked out; he underwent a second procedure in May 2014, and a third later that year, in October 2014. In addition to the procedures on his nose, he has also had cancerous cells removed from his shoulder. As Jackman explained in an interview with People last year, his initial diagnosis was scary, though it's something familiar to his fellow Australians. "It's always a bit of a shock just hearing the word 'cancer,'" the actor told People. "Being an Australian it's a very common thing. I never wore sunscreen growing up so I was a prime candidate for it." Jackman added that his doctor told him he'd likely have many more recurrences throughout his lifetime, and the actor goes for checkups every three months to ensure he's healthy -- and get treated if he's not. "It's the new normal for me," Jackman told People. We're glad Jackman has his condition under control, and that he's encouraging his fans to protect themselves. Here's hoping he doesn't need to post any more bandaged selfies anytime soon. SNL's 'Bern Your Enthusiasm' Is Pretty, Pretty, Pretty, Perfect Posted: It's classic "Curb," with Jay Pharoah knocking out another perfect impression as J.B. Smoove's Leon, and Cecily Strong earning guffaws with a dead-on Susie Greene. That it blends the actual Iowa caucus result with the usual Larry David "Curb" behavior -- including milk choice! -- is award-worthy: Perfection. Sen. Sanders showed up himself to mock the 1 percent, as embodied by Larry David, in a Titanic-like sketch called "Steam Ship": Overall, it was a pretty, pretayyyy, prettayyy, pretayyyy good night for Larry David. Do you think it will have any impact on Sen. Sanders's votes, as late night appearances occasionally can, or was it just some good fun? Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. What's New on Netflix, TV, Digital, and DVD/Blu-ray This Week: February 8-14 Posted:
"Secret in Their Eyes" Chiwetel Ejiofor, Julia Roberts, and Nicole Kidman star in this remake of the Argentinian film that won the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar in 2010. The mystery thriller is out on Digital HD February 9, with the discs to follow on February 23. The story flashes between past (13 years ago) and present, as a tight-knit team of investigators and their supervisor are torn apart when one of their own teenage daughters is brutally murdered. "The Peanuts Movie" Charlie Brown embarks on a heroic quest, as Snoopy takes to the skies to pursue the Red Baron, in this feature film from the creators of "Ice Age." It's out on Digital HD February 12, with the discs dropping on March 8. Both the Blu-ray and Digital HD releases include six all-new "Snoopy Snippets," a documentary about Charles Schulz and the history of the Peanuts gang, music videos, and a lot more. TV Worth Watching "The Walking Dead" (Sunday on AMC at 9 p.m.) "Project Runway: All Stars" (Thursday on Lifetime at 9 p.m.) In fashion, one day you're in, and the next day you're out. And sometimes the next year or even the next decade you're back in. "All Stars" Season 5 brings back an eclectic mix of past "Project Runway" designers, including Daniel Franco of the very first two seasons, plus our beloved Kini Zamora. There are some question mark additions to the cast, but we're willing to keep an open mind. As long as the fashion is good, the rest is extra. "Vinyl" (Sunday on HBO at 9 p.m.) This 1970s-set music series was created by the A-list team of Mick Jagger, Martin Scorsese, Rich Cohen, and Terence Winter -- and it's on HBO -- so it's basically must-see all around. Bobby Cannavale stars as Richie Finestra, a record executive trying to resurrect his label. Olivia Wilde plays his wife, and the supporting cast includes Ray Romano, Max Casella, Juno Temple, and Ato Essandoh. Here's a behind-the-scenes video with Mick Jagger talking about the New York arts scene in the 1970s: "The Amazing Race" (Friday on CBS at 8 p.m.) The 28th (!) season of "Amazing Race" follows 11 teams of Internet celebrities -- YouTubers and Vine stars -- which could be annoying for any non-fans. But whatever. The Race is The Race, and it's always a thrilling ride. This season reportedly heads to 18 cities in 10 countries, visiting a few for the first time, so at the very least it's worth watching for a "free" trip around the world, all from your couch. New on Netflix "Dope" "The Girl in the Book" "Revenge" alum Emily VanCamp stars in this critically acclaimed drama set in the world of New York publishing. She plays book editor Alice, who confronts difficult memories when asked to manage the re-release of an author's (Michael Nyqvist) bestselling novel, which is actually based on incidents from her own life. The story alternates between past and present, with Alice struggling to find the strength to face the troubling events she has kept hidden for years. Catch it on Netflix starting February 10. Here's the film trailer, which shares a lot of the story: "The Face of Love" In this romantic drama -- available February 13, just in time for Valentine's Day -- Annette Bening plays a lonely widow who begins a romance with an art teacher (Ed Harris) who looks just like her late husband ... although she doesn't tell the new guy about the resemblance. Robin Williams is on of the co-stars in this 2013 film, so at the very least you could stream it just to see him again. Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. Rupert Grint Thinks Ron Would've Divorced Hermione by Now Posted: While at Universal Orlando for the recent Harry Potter celebration, Grint and fellow castmates talked to Huffington Post about the future of their characters. Here's the Ron section:
That sounds really sad, but maybe it's not far off. You may recall when J.K. Rowling herself shared doubts about Ron and Hermione, telling Emma Watson for a Wonderand magazine interview that she "wrote the Hermione-Ron relationship as a form of wish fulfillment" and "in some ways Hermione and Harry are a better fit," and that "Hermione's always there for Harry." What do you think? Would Ron and Hermione still be together today? Hermione seems like she'd want to work on the marriage and wouldn't be the one to file for divorce first. But if Ron left, what would they both do? Harry seems to love Ginny, and they have kids too, so it's not so easy to say Harry and Hermione would just get together... Want more stuff like this? Henry Cavill Posts Shirtless 'Superman Training' Photo, Internet Faints Posted: Here it is: Please. That's the minimum goal? Fans may not survive if he hits the maximum, whatever that might be. Let's just say Joe Manganiello and Alexander Skarsgard may have more competition than they thought. You would expect Superman to look, you know, super, but the best part is the reaction of drooling fans on Instagram and beyond. Here are just a few comments from Us Weekly readers:
Isn't it fun when we can bond over our shallowness? Anyone not interested in the male form may not be having much fun, but they have plenty of other photos on Instagram to enjoy. Besides, maybe they too will be inspired by Superman's super-bod. Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
17 Times Tom Hiddleston Charmed the Pants Off of Everyone Posted: Tom Hiddleston is maybe the best thing to come out of Britain in forever. He took over the world -- and our hearts -- as Loki in "Thor" and "The Avengers," and the internet has been obsessed with him ever since. Who can blame them? He's got the accent, he's incredibly witty, and he cleans up nicely. He gives us heart eyes. To celebrate his birthday (and his overall existence on this earthly plain), here are 17 times we couldn't get enough of him. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Watch All of the Movie Trailers and TV Spots From Super Bowl 2016 Posted: We got our first look at Matt Damon as "Jason Bourne" and the lush "Jungle Book" trailer had all the bare necessities. Fans also got fresh looks at "X-Men: Apocalypse," "Independence Day: Resurgence," "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows," "Gods of Egypt," "10 Cloverfield Lane," "The Secret Life of Pets," "Eddie the Eagle," and "Civil War." "Deadpool," which is coming out next week, also had a cheeky new TV spot mocking professional athletes. Here are the new movie clips: Also, you could technically consider this the 12th trailer, since it aired during Super Bowl, but it actually debuted February 1, so it's a little less *new*: Which film are you most looking forward to seeing? Johnny Depp 'Tortured' Leonardo DiCaprio in 'Dark Period' of Early '90s Posted: JDepp was presented the Maltin Modern Master Award at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival late last week, and he discussed Leo and the 1993 movie. "It was a hard time for me, that film, for some reason. I don't know why," Depp said (via People). That's when he said, of Leo, "I tortured him. I really did. He was always talking about these videos games, you know? I told you it was kind of a dark period. 'No, I will not give you a drag of my cigarette while you hide from your mother again, Leo.'" If Leo was talking about video games and trying to bum cigarettes while he hid from his mother (sorry, but LOL), can you really blame Johnny for dismissing him? Doesn't sound like torture, although maybe Johnny is leaving out some of the harsher bits. Leo has been nominated for five acting Oscars -- the first, in '93, for Best Supporting Actor ("Gilbert Grape") and four for Best Actor ("The Aviator," "Blood Diamond," "The Wolf of Wall Street," and "The Revenant"). He was also up as a producer for "The Wolf of Wall Street." This year, Leo is the Oscar favorite but we'll see what happens on February 28. For a minute there, Johnny seemed like he might be in the running for "Black Mass," but that did not pan out. Maybe that's what happens when you "torture" Leo -- karma takes his side. 11 Actors Nominated for an Oscar Twice in the Same Year Posted: For actors and actresses in Hollywood, just being nominated for an Oscar is an honor. An even bigger honor? Getting nominated twice in the same year -- what an accomplishment. Here are the 11 actors and actresses who were double-honored by the Academy in the same year. 'The Good Wife' Is Officially Ending, Read Julianna Margulies's Statement Posted: The network issued statements from producer/star Margulies and CBS executives after the Super Bowl announcement:
It does seem like this is the right time to end the show. Alicia had a breakdown/breakthrough last week when crying to new BFF Lucca (Cush Jumbo) about what could've been with Will Gardner (Josh Charles). And she had her first kiss with the unbearably sexy Jason (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). So they just need to find a good way to wrap up Alicia's story in the next nine episodes, which is plenty of time. Are you sorry to hear "The Good Wife" is ending? How do you hope they wrap Alicia's story? Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. Fans Love The Hulk and Ant-Man's Epic Coke Mini Ad Posted: ... but the Coke Mini commercial gave him some lines and let him help The Hulk open the can. 'Cause it really does take tiny fingers to open those things. As Ant-Man put it, "Oh, you poor sad Hulk. Hold on." Imagine watching The Hulk try to open the plastic bags at the grocery store. He has no future as a bagger. Here's the ad, showing superheroes once again blithely trashing a city (tsk tsk): His little pinkie raise! The commercial debuted during last night's Super Bowl and it already has about 1.7 million YouTube views. And, for once, the fans seemed to agree on its awesomeness, some saying it was the best Coke ad ever and others calling for more Ant-Man vs. Hulk battles over things like the last slice of pizza. Here's just one great response:
Team Hulk on this one. It was in Bruce Banner's fridge, after all. Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
'Jason Bourne' Is Fast and Furious in First Trailer and Poster Posted: The first trailer -- shown during the 2016 Super Bowl -- and poster emphasize, James Bond-style, that we know this guy's name. Maybe it's meant to show how the man who could be calling himself David Webb or any other name (Tyler Durden?) is now embracing his Bourne to Kill status, after a long (presumed dead?) absence since 2007's "The Bourne Ultimatum." We hear Bourne say he knows who he is, he remembers everything, and it sounds like Julia Stiles as Nicky Parsons who replies, "Remembering everything doesn't mean you know everything." It may be Alicia Vikander's character who says, "The world is at war. We need the perfect weapon." Those shirtless "Fight Club"-esque shots were probably from the start of filming, since that was the first image shared from production back in September. Here's the first look teaser trailer: Here's the poster: That is such a Bond poster, no? If you sub in Daniel Craig's face it could've been for "Skyfall" or "Spectre." Jason Bourne," directed by Paul Greengrass, stars Matt Damon, Julia Stiles, Tommy Lee Jones, Alicia Vikander, and Vincent Cassel. It would be great to see Joan Allen again as Pam Landy, but she's not on the list at this point. Here's more about the plot. You excited for this one or not? Want more stuff like this? The 25 Best Los Angeles Movies Posted: Jesus is flying over Rome, a statue hoisted by a helicopter, in the opening shot of Fellini's "La Dolce Vita." In the opening shot of Steve Martin's "L.A. Story," which debuted 25 years ago this week (on February 8, 1991), instead of Jesus, it's a giant prefab frankfurter. And that may be all you need to know about how the movie industry portrays its hometown on screen. In the movies, at least, Los Angeles is a city of jarring contrasts -- artifice and practicality, glittering dreams and prosaic reality, sunshine and drought. Though it's a comic fantasy, "L.A. Story" paints as effective a portrait of Los Angeles as any movie, but as the list here makes clear, there are lots of L.A.s, each with its own screen story.
