The Geek Beat: These R-rated Comic Book Movies Need To Happen... Now! Posted: 16 Feb 2016 09:30 PM PST Now that Deadpool has seemingly changed the game for “R”-rated comic book movies with a record-setting opening weekend, there are probably quite a few studios scrambling to find comics they can turn into cash cows for adult audiences. Fortunately, the comics landscape is filled with great characters and stories that would be well-suited for older audiences, and would also avoid the sort of branding conflicts that develop when a studio takes popular characters for younger fans and gives them grim-and-gritty makeovers. (I'm looking at you, Man of Steel.) And if we've learned anything from the success of films like Deadpool and Guardians of the Galaxy, it's that lesser-known characters can bring in big numbers at the box office. So, in the interest of guiding... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Watch: Ryan Reynolds Crashes 'Eddie the Eagle' Press Day to Interview Hugh Jackman Posted: 16 Feb 2016 08:00 PM PST Fox is wisely taking advantage of Deadpool's runaway success by using some of its thunder to promote its other smaller movies, like the inspirational sports story Eddie the Eagle, starring Hugh Jackman. Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds crashed a recent press junket for Eddie the Eagle to conduct his first ever interview with another actor, Hugh Jackman. The two joked about being an outdated Sexiest Man Alive, as Reynolds continually cracks jokes at Jackman's expense. Have a look. Of course the big elephant in the room (that's not mentioned) is that in a superhero universe, both Deadpool and Wolverine (who is played by Jackman) have a storied history of hating one another. With rumors spreading that Wolverine 3 may go for an R rating -- and with at least one more... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Posted: 16 Feb 2016 06:30 PM PST Unless you have kids, it's hard to appreciate just how much Lego dominates entertainment. It's not just elaborate playset recreations of the Batmobile or the firehouse from Ghostbusters. It's not just a string of video games inspired by big screen franchises. Movies are Lego-ized in every medium possible. Were I to go pull a book off of my five-year-old's shelf right now, chances are shockingly good that the images in it are Lego versions of characters. And when it comes to the Lego-ization of things, no franchise seems more prone to it than Star Wars. It's pervasive, to say the least. But it's also not all created strictly for children. They do try to bridge the gap between actual kids and grownups who are still kids at heart and that is precisely the... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
First 'Kindergarten Cop 2' Trailer - Dolph Lundgren Takes Over for Arnold Schwarzenegger Posted: 16 Feb 2016 04:51 PM PST Update 2/16/15: We now have a trailer for Kindergarten Cop 2 starring Dolph Lundgren. It's just a tad silly. Update 8/13/15: The new Kindergarten Cop is apparently already filming in Vancouver, with Dolph Lundgren stepping in to the oversized shoes once filled by Arnold Schwazenegger. We don't actually know if he's playing Detective John Kimble or a different cop, but we do know that he has to infilitrate a kindergarten class to find a kid who is in the federal witness protection program. And not only that, but he's going to have an Indian sidekick named Sanjit this time around, which sounds amazingly antiquated in a '90s Saturday morning cartoon kind of way. Previously 6/15/15: A remake of the 1990 comedy Kindergarten Cop is on its way, but... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Here Are the Upcoming Superhero Movies That Could Have an R Rating Posted: 16 Feb 2016 01:30 PM PST With $150 million at the box office in its first four days, Deadpool is now the most successful R-rated superhero movie ever. It's not the first to play with an edgier rating -- others that have come before it include Kick-Ass, Blade, Dredd, Watchmen and more -- but it is the first to absolutely conquer the box office in ways usually reserved for PG-13-rated summer blockbusters like, say, Guardians of the Galaxy or Avengers: Age of Ultron. So what's next? Well... probably more R-rated superhero movies, for starters. When The Hangover surprised the industry by grossing almost $500 million worldwide, its success helped usher in a new age of R-rated comedies that we're still seeing dominate theaters to this day. Not all of them were winners, of course, with most of the... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
