Norman Reedus Talks 'Triple 9's' Biggest Action Scene and 'The Walking Dead' Posted: At the junket for his new heist thriller "Triple 9," Norman Reedus warned me, "I'm sick. So don't make out with me." I told him I'd restrain myself, although it was tough. Sounding hoarser than usually and sipping on tea, "The Walking Dead" star wore sunglasses and talked enthusiastically about playing brother to buddy Aaron Paul, who -- along with some very corrupt cops -- is his partner in crime in this fast-paced, all-star heist drama from director John Hillcoat. He also talked about the return of his AMC hit show and his new unscripted TV show, "Ride With Norman Reedus." Moviefone: Aaron Paul plays your brother -- had the two of you met before? Reedus: We've known each other for at least 15 years. When I first moved to L.A. -- I used to live here, ages ago -- he's one of the first people I knew. I've always been a fan of his work. One of the reasons I really wanted to get on "Walking Dead" was because it was on AMC, and I was a big "Breaking Bad" fan. So I've known him for a long time. There was already a love there, so we didn't have to fake that. What are the Do's and Don'ts you learned about bank robbing? Ha! Always have a back-up plan is a definite "Do." Don't open a bag full of money with a red-dye explosive in it. That's definitely a "Don't." But it made for a great scene when the bag explodes on the freeway. It looked cool. Luckily, I wasn't in that van when that scene was going on, because that was gross. This is such a great cast -- was there anyone you wished you had a scene with? Kate, definitely. Our children went to the same grade school in New York, so I'd see her in the morning sometimes. We'd both have sunglasses on and just doing that morning thing where you're just shoving your kids in the car, right? I'm friends with her to a certain extent, but I would love to work with her. She's such a badass. You're kind of a badass, too, in this. Did you do any Special Forces training? [My character] was Blackwater, so I did a lot of research on that. I have a cousin who's in Blackwater, so I got some inside scoop there. A lot of my role in this is sort of like the navigator or the puppet master on these heists, so John really stressed that I have a very calm demeanor about me – somebody that could f*** you up, but also somebody that, when things went down, he was very calm. [The director] gave us a buttload of homework. Films to watch and articles to read and photographs to go over and stories to listen to, all the things that you would think. He'd give us a Dropbox full and you'd get through all that and the next day it would be full again! I never had a director give you so much homework. It was great, though. What kind of films? Some heist movies, but mostly a lot of clips, like raids and mafia gang stories and this horrific shit. Just horrible, horrible stuff. Just to know the world that you're in. And a lot of military stuff, too -- Blackwater operations and a ton of it. Between this and "The Walking Dead," do you have a tactical mindset when you walk into a room, like where the exits and danger zones are? I started thinking about that in New York when I was walking around after doing "The Walking Dead." I'd be like, "Okay, there's four people coming at me on the sidewalk right here. I see that guy's camera phone coming out, so I'm going to have to bypass that." I did kind of start doing that just for fun. It's kinda like when you play that game Tetris, everything becomes Tetris. I look at the downtown skyline and think, "I can fit this guy in here." "Walking Dead" doesn't seem to give you much time to make movies. This was set in Atlanta, so that probably made it a lot easier. It's almost impossible. I think I got offered three movies at the beginning of this season and couldn't do any of them. Even when they came back to me and offered me smaller parts, I still couldn't do them. I'm on a show that's a 24/7 thing. But because this is in Atlanta, it kind of worked out for me. And then on the hiatus, I'm doing another show, "Ride [With Norman Reedus]." That's why my throat's all messed up. I've been in Death Valley on dirt bikes, just swallowing sand for the last five days. But it's awesome. I've done Florida, California Coast, Georgia Hills. I'm about to go do Texas and Louisiana. And then Vegas through Death Valley. Who's joining you on some of these rides? Different guests. ["Easy Rider" star] Peter Fonda was in Florida, that was kind of awesome. Just different guys. I'm not supposed to say. The Peter Fonda bit was all over the Internet so I guess I can say that one. What will you do when "The Walking Dead" ends? I'll do more "Ride." And I'll do some more movies. And then I'll be back here, talking to you about doing something else. And then, hopefully, I'll be going back to Georgia in May. Hopefully we just keep this ball rolling for a minute, you know? 'Game of Thrones' Star Finn Jones Cast as Marvel's Iron Fist Posted: Finn Jones is going from knight to superhero. Entertainment Weekly reports that the "Game of Thrones" actor, who played Ser Loras Tyrell, has been tapped as the lead of Netflix and Marvel's "Iron Fist." The series will be their fourth collaboration, after "Daredevil," "Jessica Jones," and the upcoming "Luke Cage." Marvel is planning to team up all four characters in a superhero-league show called "The Defenders." In the comics, Iron Fist is a wealthy kid named Danny Rand who acquires martial arts skills when he travels to the mystical Asian city of K'un-Lun. He eventually returns to New York City to fight crime, because, duh, that's what superheroes do. As EW notes, some fans wanted Marvel to cast an Asian actor in the role, even the character in the comics is white. Others thought it would be stereotypical to feature an Asian as Iron Fist, simply because he engages in martial arts. It's highly probable that Iron Fist be introduced during the run of "Luke Cage," just as the latter character was introduced in "Jessica Jones." And in the comics, Iron Fist and Luke Cage sometimes worked together as a crimefighting duo. "Luke Cage" is still in production, and will likely stream late this year. "Daredevil" season 2 premieres March 18. Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Oscar Predictions 2016: Who Will Win Best Director? Posted: The 2016 Oscars are almost here, which means it's time to firm up those predictions and get your ballot all ready to go. This week, leading up to film's biggest night of the year, Moviefone's editors are revealing our predictions in the ceremony's biggest categories. We've already given you our picks for Best Actress, Best Actor, and Best Picture. Now let's take a look at Best Director. The nominees are: Adam McKay, "The Big Short" George Miller, "Mad Max: Fury Road" Alejandro G. Iñárritu, "The Revenant" Lenny Abrahamson, "Room" Tom McCarthy, "Spotlight" Here, we've filled you in on who we think will win, as well as who we feel truly deserves to take home that coveted golden statue. Tim Hayne Who Will Win: Alejandro G. Iñárritu for "The Revenant." Yes, he won last year, but Academy Awards history is littered with two-time Oscar-winning directors: Steven Spielberg, Oliver Stone, Clint Eastwood, Milos Forman, and Robert Wise, to name more than a few. He wouldn't be the first to win back-to-back Best Directing Oscars, either; that distinction belongs to John Ford. Plus, "The Revenant" hits all the marks for a Best Director win: it stars a high-profile actor (Leonardo DiCaprio, a shoe-in for Best Actor), a substantial box office take, and some envelope-pushing, risk-taking filmmaking. Who Should Win: Tom McCarthy for "Spotlight." Sure, "Spotlight" lacks the populist appeal and gritty, in-your-face filmmaking style of Iñárritu's "The Revenant," but McCarthy's portrait of the Boston Globe's exposé on sexual abuse within the Catholic Church is one told skillfully, artfully, and compellingly. It's a riveting 2+ hours filled with masterful performances and well-crafted dialogue. What's more? McCarthy took a sensitive, scandalous topic and made an honest movie that ably skirts sensationalization and exploitation. Now that's an achievement. Phil Pirrello Who Will Win: Alejandro G. Iñárritu. Having won the DGA award — two years in a row — he is the odds-on favorite. And the narrative behind "The Revanant's" Oscar campaign has focused on how hard and exacting of a production it was to capture the Oscar-winner's vision. About time all the hard work pays off. Who Should Win: George Miller. At 70, Miller showed the young crop of what passes for action movie directors how it is done, with his relentless and inventive "Mad Max: Fury Road." He gives each scene the exact amount of whatever it needs, producing a modern classic that, in any other year, would have probably taken home Best Director if not for stiff competition from "The Revenant." Rachel Horner Who Will Win: Alejandro González Iñárritu for "The Revenant." Who Should Win: I'm torn between Alejandro González Iñárritu and George Miller for "Mad Max: Fury Road." I'm leaning more towards George Miller, but both of them deserve it. Alana Altmann Who Will Win: Alejandro G. Iñárritu for "The Revenant." The DGA award win is a good indication that he's on his way to a second victory in this category. This is the kind of gut-wrenching survival tale that has Oscar written all over it. What Should Win: This is a toss up for me. George Miller's unique "Mad Max" vision was unlike anything we've seen from an "action" film in years, but "The Revenant"s striking imagery kept our eyes glued to the screen, even when things got brutal. I can't help being impressed by the fact that the same person who made a jazzy art-fest like "Birdman" made the wilderness epic a year later. Tom Hardy Is a Very Dangerous Man to Know in 'Taboo' Trailer Posted: "I have sworn that I will do very, very foolish things," Tom Hardy says in the trailer for "Taboo," an upcoming period drama from FX and BBC One. Bring it on! The "Revenant" and "Mad Max: Fury Road" star is heading to TV to headline a show based on an original story by Hardy and his dad, Chips Hardy. The son plays James Keziah Delaney, a man who returns to 1814 London after being presumed dead. He arrives to claim his father's fortune and shipping empire, but the tumultuous time he spent in Africa is nothing compared to the treachery he finds in London. The eight-episode series boasts a great cast, including "House of Cards" actor Michael Kelly and "Game of Thrones" players Jonathan Pryce and Oona Chaplin. It looks like a tremendous showcase for Hardy. He's unlikely to win an Oscar this weekend, but maybe he can make up for it with an Emmy. "Taboo" is set to premiere sometime in 2017. The 5 Most Scandalous Moments to Ever Happen at the Oscars Posted: The Oscars are almost here, and -- if we're being honest -- they can be a bit dull. But, every so often, things can get a little crazy -- or, dare we say, scandalous. Here are five unforgettable moments from Oscars past. Why Negan's Intro on 'The Walking Dead' Season 6 Finale Was Shot Two Ways Posted: It actually wouldn't be a surprise to hear that "The Walking Dead" shot Negan's (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) big Season 6 finale entrance five or six different ways, to throw off spoilers. There's still no guarantee that they'll follow Robert Kirkman's comic book on his storyline, but it sounds like they want to follow the comic when it comes to Negan's potty mouth. Negan drops the f-bomb in every other word on the page, but AMC is not HBO, so it's always been a mystery how they would manage to keep Negan the same character fans love to hate to love without cleaning up his f--king language the way Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) was forced to say "screwing with the wrong people" instead of f--king. On that note, Entertainment Weekly talked to The Powers That Be about Negan's arrival, and confirmed that it was shot in two different ways, with an f-bomb maybe making it onto AMC and, if not, at least showing up on the DVD/Blu-ray release as a more profane cut. EW got f-bomb comments from showrunner Scott M. Gimple, comic book writer/exec producer Robert Kirkman, director/exec producer/special effects guru Greg Nicotero, and star Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Gimple told EW his goal is to give people "full-octane Negan," adding, "I'm still playing around with it, but I will say I do have the material two ways right now. I'll see what I can do with it. One way or another I want people to see full-octane Negan. Will I be able to shoot every scene like that? Probably not, but to tell you the truth, I think we will get as close to the version of full-octane Negan as we can through some version of the show or another." Nicotero told EW, "There is a rhythm to it that even in some of the takes that we did. What I affectionately call the 'f— takes' have a completely different rhythm to them and a completely different feel. So while editing it, I was very careful to make sure that I preserved a lot of the performance without getting myself into trouble with the profanity." It's kind of funny how much negotiating has to happen to get the word f--k on a cable show with this much violence on a weekly basis. But welcome to 'merica! "The Walking Dead" airs Episode 11 this Sunday, opposite the Oscars. Negan shows up in Episode 16. Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. Anthony Mackie Talks 'Triple 9' Deleted Scenes, Working With Wonder Woman Posted: In the new crime drama, "Triple 9," Anthony Mackie plays a corrupt cop who pulls bank robberies on the side and isn't happy when he's saddled with a straitlaced new partner, played by Casey Affleck. The great cast includes Kate Winslet as a ruthless Russian mob boss, Woody Harrelson as Affleck's uncle -- who's also a cop -- and Chiwetel Ejiofor, Norman Reedus and Aaron Paul as members of Mackie's bank-robbing gang. Mackie sat down with Moviefone to talk about his favorite heist movie, the deleted scenes he hopes resurface on the DVD, and hanging with "Mr. Atlanta," T.I. Moviefone: This has a terrific heist scene in it -- so what's your favorite heist movie? Anthony Mackie: Eddie Murphy did this movie called "Harlem Nights." The premise was that the mob was bullying them and they had to pay a fee to do business in Harlem. And they turn it and basically jack the mob for all their money and leave town. The only movie with more one-liners is "Coming to America." And those are my two favorite movies of all time. What are the "Do's and Don'ts" about bank robbing? (Laughs) The Do's: Be fast. Wear gloves. Be well orchestrated. The Don'ts: Don't go slow. Don't hang around afterwards. Don't lose your gloves. I think the big thing is, as long as you don't hurt anyone in the act of bank robbing, you're okay. I think once you go in and start shootin' people, they're gonna find you. Cuz nobody cares about a rich dude losin' a P.O. box. They care about people being hurt. The film has a scary-good ensemble cast. Who were you disappointed you didn't get any scenes with? Of course, Kate. I admire Kate for the work that she's done. She's done some really, really good movies. If you want people to know you're a great actress, you have to change your name to Kate. Of course I was disheartened I didn't have any scenes with her. I've worked with Woody before, and he's just a hoot to be around. He's such his own person that not having worked with him in this movie... we were on set at the same time and I'm like, "C'mon, man! Shouldn't we be in the same room at the same time or something?" So those two were kind of frustrating that we didn't have scenes together. At one point in the movie, Casey Affleck tells you he's a "total badass." So which one of you is the bigger badass in real life? I would say Casey's wife [Summer Phoenix] is the biggest badass. She kind of trumps both of us. She's badass. If there's one thing Casey is not, it's a badass. I would say the only person who's further away from being a badass than Casey is Screech. Was there more to your character's backstory than we see in the film? Watching it, there's certain scenes that [director] John [Hillcoat] deleted, so I'm interested in hearing the feedback once the DVD comes out. Because if this movie were two hours and 15 minutes, it would be a completely different movie. Completely different. [The stuff that was cut] was more character-driven. I feel like this is still character-driven, but what they took out was more in-depth. But I think the DVD version is going to be really interesting if people like it now. We see why Chiwetel Ejiofor gets into these kinds of heists, but we don't really see why your character does it -- apart from the money. One of the things that was taken out of the movie ... my character's a young detective. He's flamboyant. You see him in the strip club. You see him in his hot-rod Mustang. He's that guy. But with [my character] Marcus Belmont, what's really cool is his appreciation for being a police officer and the honor of being promoted to detective. That's one of the things I feel that comes with him that I really liked when I read the script, and I think you'll see once all the scenes are put back into the movie. But there are some pretty big action scenes here. Did you get a chance to say your catchphrase "cut the check" during filming? Oh, every day. I don't care, when I earn my money, I make sure everybody knows they gotta cut the check. Now this movie, it was a really fun shoot. Runnin' down the street and shootin' and doin' all this stuff was fun to us. So we had the scene where we're tactically going in to the projects to arrest this guy who's a drug dealer. And I'm behind the car and Casey's running away from him. My cover is getting shot at, so I had to run from behind the bushes, and jump onto a mat behind the car. So every time, goofin' off, I would try to jump and land on the car and roll onto the ground. So John would yell, "Anthony, stop doing that!" And I'm like, "Fine." So I come out the bushes, I run, I jump and I start shooting and he's like, "Perfect!" I'm like,"Cut the check." [Laughs] You were trying to give him more. I was trying to give him more! I was trying to give him a burger with many condiments and he just wanted a plain burger. So I gave him a plain burger. I know you like to listen to music on set. And Chris Evans has said that your iTunes collection is better than his. What did you listen to on this set? I listened to a lot of hip hop. Because we were in Atlanta, I had everything Jermaine Dupri, OutKast, Organized Noize, and Goodie Mob on constant rotation. And because this was such a grimy movie, we had to be in such a mindset to shoot everyday, it was all Atlanta funk hip hop all day. You're a fan of the soundtrack? I love the music in this movie. I worked with T.I. In "Ant-Man" and it was so funny because T.I. is like Mr. Atlanta. My goal in shootin' this movie was, "I need to hang out with T.I., so I'm gonna go to the places I hear T.I. likes to hang out at and I'ma hang out with T.I." So I get his number and I text him, "Yo, Tip. It's Mackie. I'm in Atlanta and I'm shootin'. Let's get up." So T.I. introduced me to Atlanta. That was my goal in this movie. Gal Gadot is also in the movie. It seems like you can't have a movie now without someone from the Marvel Universe and someone from the DC universe in it. Pretty much. The last two years have been insane. And what they're doing now is really interesting, DC and Marvel. Instead of doing the Superman movie with just Superman, there's Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman. And instead of doing Captain America with just Cap, you have everybody in the movie. So instead of one dude, you have a full cast of actors. And fortunately, Marvel casts really good actors. So if you're in a Marvel movie, it's not because of the way you look, it's because of the way you act. What's the biggest difference in making a huge movie like the "Captain America" films versus a smaller one like this? It's way less people. [Laughs] You work on a Marvel movie, you never see 90 percent of the people who are working on it. And it's just expansive. You shoot a Marvel movie, the entire city of L.A. is working on that movie. With this, it was very intimate. It was about John's vision and the story he wanted to tell, as opposed to spectacle that the movie could become ... It's more about the characters and the story and the idea of what happens. You have to put yourself in a certain mindset or position to watch a movie like this because it's introspective. It makes you think about and challenge yourself, as opposed to a movie for movie's sake. "Triple 9" hits theaters Friday. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
The 'Batman v Superman' Trailers Are Even Better in This Chronological Edit Posted: "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" opens one month from today, on March 25. The awesome final trailer came out a couple of weeks ago, and we figured that was going to be it in terms of videos to watch before the big DC showdown. But not so fast. One YouTuber, M1llion, was ambitious enough to create an impressive supercut of all the "Batman v Superman" trailers and clips in possible story order, to try and give fans a chronological look at what's ahead. Some fans may have watched the previous trailers and worried that Warner Bros. was giving away the entire story, but we've only really seen 10 minutes in a 2 hour, 31 minute film. Check out the supercut: The scene transitions are a little bit choppy, but it's a good big picture reminder of what's ahead when Ben Affleck makes his debut as Batman vs. Henry Cavill's return as the Man of Steel. Oh, and don't forget Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, who is currently shooting her own movie for release next year. Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. Watch What Happens When 'The Hateful Eight' Meets 'Looney Tunes' Posted: The 2016 Oscars air this Sunday on ABC, and afterward Jimmy Kimmel has his "After the Oscars" special. On Wednesday night, he told his audience they've been working on a project they hope to someday be recognized by the Academy -- creating family-friendly versions of R-rated movies. This week's "Kimmel Kartoon" combines Quentin Tarantino's "The Hateful Eight" and "Looney Tunes," taking real audio from the film and giving it to cartoon characters. So, as Kimmel put it, "This is what happens when Sam Jackson meets Yosemite Sam": Samuel L. Jackson got to be Bugs Bunny, of course, 'cause they are the biggest BAMFs in their saloons. You can check out past Kimmel Kartoons over here, including Charlie Brown as Charlie Sheen, Donald Trump as Batman, "Straight Outta Compton" meets "Alvin and the Chipmunks," etc. Meanwhile, "The Hateful Eight" is up for a few Oscars this week, including Best Supporting Actress, Original Score, and Cinematography. Zachary Quinto Honors Leonard Nimoy 1 Year After Death: 'I Miss Him All the Time' Posted: The great Leonard Nimoy passed away on February 27, 2015, at age 83. So as of this Saturday we have lived and prospered, in our own ways, for a year without the iconic "Star Trek" actor. The new Spock, Zachary Quinto, was on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" Wednesday night to promote his new play, and he shared a sweet tribute to the man he came to know as a friend:
Zachary said Nimoy's wife flew out to L.A. for the opening of his play, adding that she is as much a part of his life as the late actor was. "I feel really lucky to have known them on so many levels, for sure." Here's the full video: Zachary returns to the role of Spock in "Star Trek Beyond," which is scheduled for release on July 22, 2016. Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. 10 Oscars the Academy Should Definitely Take Back Posted: Every year, Oscars are handed out. And every year, people believe that some of the winners should give those Oscars back. Look, upsets happen. A sentimental favorite gets the statue over the more deserving or less popular choice. And this year's awards show will surely be no exception. In honor of this year's ceremony -- from "Dances With Wolves" beating "Goodfellas," to Roberto Benigni going Full Benigni -- here are 10 Oscars the Academy should take back. Oscars Voter Admits He Aimed to Stop 'The Revenant' and 'Ridiculous' Leo Posted: Every year, The Hollywood Reporter pulls back the veil by allowing a few Academy members to anonymously reveal their Oscar ballots and the reasons for those votes. Every year, it's illuminating and maddening. This year is no exception. The Oscars will be handed out this Sunday, February 28 on ABC, and voting is now closed. It seems like Leonardo DiCaprio is a lock to win Best Actor for "The Revenant" but at least one Academy member openly voted against him. This particular Oscar voter shared his ballot with THR, revealing films he didn't even see (including "Mad Max: Fury Road") and admitting that he hated "The Revenant" so much he voted for "Mad Max" in one category "solely because I want to stop The Revenant." He had some valid (and funny) points to make in his distaste for "The Revenant," arguing that Leo's Oscar campaign is based around how hard it was to make the film, when that's why actors are paid big bucks. Plus, how much did he actually do in the film? Here are his arguments for (and again) Best Picture and Best Actor:
We'll see how the votes break down this Sunday. Read more of this particular voter's ballot here. And check out the full list of 2016 Oscars nominees. Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Sarah Michelle Gellar Confirms Return for 'Cruel Intentions' TV Series Posted: She's back! Sarah Michelle Gellar is returning to her role as manipulative rich b-tch Kathryn Merteuil in NBC's sequel to "Cruel Intentions." Gellar starred in that 1999 high school movie, alongside Selma Blair, Ryan Phillippe, and Ryan's then girlfriend, Reese Witherspoon. Here's Sarah announcing her return: According to TVLine, the new series picks up more than 15 years after the end of the movie and follows Kathryn as she vies for control of Valmont International and Bash Casey, son of the late Sebastian Valmont (played by Phillippe in the movie) and Annette Hargrove (Witherspoon). You may recall that Sebastian kept a journal of all of his exploits, and young Bash is meant to find that and be introduced to a world of sex, money, power, and corruption. It's kind of hard to see how they are going to make a network version of this very R material. Then again, if Emma Roberts can do it on FOX's "Scream Queens," an OG like SMG may have no problem on NBC. Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. Oscars 2016 Preview: 13 Things You'll See at This Year's Academy Awards Posted: It's fitting that this year's Academy Award-nominated movies are largely about daunting survival challenges -- like "The Revenant" and "The Martian" -- since sitting through the ceremony can be something of an ordeal, even if you're at home and in easy reach of microwave popcorn. To prepare yourself for what could be four hours of Oscar-watching (not to mention two hours of red carpet arrivals), it helps to know what to expect. Here's what to watch for at the 88th Academy Awards show, airing on ABC on Feb. 28. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
