Watch: Chris Farley As the Original Voice of Shrek

Posted: 06 Aug 2015 09:00 PM PDT

Chris Farley is back in the zeitgeist these days, partly because of a new documentary called I Am Chris Farley, about the life of the late comedian and Saturday Night Live veteran, and partly thanks to a recent viral video inserting Farley into the Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation trailer. Now here's more, a reminder that Farley was the original voice of Shrek, but he died suddenly in 1997 of a drug overdose before he finished recording his lines. DreamWorks nearly scrapped production on Shrek after the tragedy, but after reportedly trying John Lithgow in the role of the now-iconic ogre, they got Farley's old SNL colleague Mike Myers to redo the part. At that time, Cameron Diaz also replaced Jeneane Garofalo, who'd...

New 'The Last Witch Hunter' Trailer: Vin Diesel Dives Headfirst Into Monsters

Posted: 06 Aug 2015 07:30 PM PDT

UPDATE 8/6/15: A new trailer for The Last Witch Hunter is now online and contains a lot more monsters and magic. Check it out at the bottom of this post.   Previously: Vin Diesel is a huge nerd. You may not be able to tell that based purely on the Fast & Furious franchise, but Diesel's got some serious geek credentials. He founded a video game company just to make games for his Pitch Black movies, and he not only grew up playing Dungeons & Dragons, but he still does as an adult, and better yet -- he taught Judi Dench how to play while they were filming The Chronicles of Riddick. So don't be so shocked to see the muscle car icon starring in a fantasy movie like The Last Witch Hunter, which has just revealed its first teaser trailer. The teaser...

'By The Sea' Trailer: Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's Marriage Hides Dark Secrets

Posted: 06 Aug 2015 06:00 PM PDT

Angelina Jolie Pitt has been transitioning away from acting and into the director's chair, but for her next movie she'll be pulling both duties. And she's also roped in her hubbie, Brad Pitt, for the journey. By The Sea stars the real-life couple as a fictional couple in 1970s France who try to take a relaxing retreat to a gorgeous locale that ends up being anything but a relaxing retreat. At least that's how things appear in the first trailer for the movie, which just hit online. It doesn't offer up a ton of plot, but it's far from subtle about the story here. The idylic couple has got some serious issues, and they're probably going to get worse before they get better. Check it out. By the Sea hits theaters November 13, 2015.   Follow...

The Best Defense of CG Effects You'll Ever See

Posted: 06 Aug 2015 04:30 PM PDT

Ever since the Comic-Con presentation for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, movie fans have been heavily celebrating the franchise's return to old-school practical effects. J.J. Abrams and company made a huge deal out of showing their physical creations on stage in San Diego and in a behind-the-scenes video that was also released online. In the new installment, aliens will be portrayed by puppets, animatronics and actors wearing masks. Spaceships, such as the Millennium Falcon, will be partly represented by sets and/or models. Of course, there will be some computer effects, too, but nothing close to the level used for the Star Wars prequels.  Ugh, remember the horrible effects in those prequels? And so many other movies involving wall-to-wall CG? Like The...

Our Marvel Expert Weighs In On the New 'Fantastic Four'

Posted: 06 Aug 2015 03:00 PM PDT

Coming to a fourth Fantastic Four movie after the “unreleased” '90s cheapie and two dumb big-budget riffs, and being a big Fantastic Four fan myself, the only refrain I want to swat down immediately is “we don’t need another Fantastic Four movie.” Dammit, I do. This is the comic that got me into comics, and as a film fan too I’d love to see a live-action Fantastic Four that didn’t embarrass the hell out of me. The Thing is my favorite Marvel superhero. There’s rich cinematic material to be mined from their 50-plus years’ worth of far-out sci-fi adventures and family dynamics. This could be Fox’s very own Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, in the right hands. I could tell from the ad material that this wasn’t...

Why 'Angry Birds' Might Become the Next 'Lego Movie'

Posted: 06 Aug 2015 01:30 PM PDT

Remember those days when everyone you knew with a smart phone was playing Angry Birds all day and all night? It was one of the first mobile games to truly conquer all corners of the market -- from little kids to grown adults, if you weren't already addicted to Angry Birds then why even exist? Then, like things always do, we moved on to other feverishly addictive games -- but the appetite for Angry Birds was still there, so much so that a movie was announced. Due out on May 20, 2016, Angry Birds features a voice cast stuffed with some very, very funny people, including Maya Rudolph, Peter Dinklage, Jason Sudeikis, Danny McBride, Bill Hader, Jillian Bell, Keegan-Michael Key, Tony Hale and Josh Gad. Seriously, that cast is pretty great -- and now Josh Gad is talking about the...

Movie News: 'Nightmare on Elm Street' Being Rebooted Again; Watch Thrilling New 'Everest' Trailer

Posted: 06 Aug 2015 12:00 PM PDT

A Nightmare on Elm Street: Rumor has it that New Line Cinema is planning to reboot A Nightmare on Elm Street -- again. Jackie Earle Haley starred as the iconic Freddy Krueger in a 2010 remake (above) that failed to find much favor with critics or audiences. The new version will be written by David Leslie Johnson (Orphan), who recently signed on to adapt Dungeons and Dragons for the big screen; he's also working on a sequel to The Conjuring and Disney's new version of Something Wicked This Way Comes. [Tracking Board] Fantastic Beasts: Colin Farrell (True Detective, above) has joined the cast of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, a spinoff of the Harry Potter franchise. Farrell will play a supporting role, a wizard who meets...
