The One Thing Missing From Every 'Fantastic Four' Movie

Posted: 11 Aug 2015 09:00 PM PDT

The Fantastic Four are a tough nut to crack on film. We saw what happened when director Tim Story went light and playful with these characters back in 2005. We saw what happened just a few days ago when director Josh Trank went dark and edgy. The resulting films couldn't be more different in style and execution, but both are bad films that struggle with their characters, unsure of tone and baffled as to what they want to do with this truly strange team of superheroes. And while both movies fail on their own special merits, both of them are built on shaky ground to begin with because they forget the one key aspect of the Fantastic Four that makes them, well, the Fantastic Four. The Fantastic Four are explorers and adventurers, not superheroes. Sure, the comic book iterations...

New 'Jem and the Holograms' Trailer Introduces Synergy

Posted: 11 Aug 2015 06:00 PM PDT

So far the major concern about the Jem and the Holograms movie is that it doesn't quite look like the '80s cartoon it is based on. The first trailer didn't really help things as it looked like a simple story about a young singer who becomes a reluctant pop princess. The new trailer, however, has a few more of the ingredients taken from, or at least inspired by the cartoon. This time around you'll get a look at Synergy, the holograph-projecting robot that Jem's dad built for her before he died, which was sorely lacking in the first trailer. Synergy works a bit different in the movie than in the show, but if you were worried they were going to abandon that side of the story entirely, now you can finally rest at night knowing they have found a way to work it...

Tom Hardy to Give Out '100 Bullets' In New Comic Book Movie

Posted: 11 Aug 2015 04:45 PM PDT

If someone gave you a gun, 100 bullets, and all the information you needed to get revenge on someone who truly deserved it, would you do it? That's the basic premise of the comic series 100 Bullets and soon it'll be the basic premise of a movie called 100 Bullets, because, well, 100 Bullets is being turned into a movie. It's not too complicated. Tom Hardy will be producing the project for New Line Cinema, which is not-so-coincidentally owned by the very same Warner Bros. who produced Hardy's The Dark Knight Rises and Mad Max: Fury Road. Apparently they all get along quite well, and if the stars align, Hardy may very well play the lead role in 100 Bullets. Assuming screenwriter Chris Borrelli follows the comics fairly closely, that role would most likely be that...

A First-of-its-Kind Action Movie, New Goods From 'The Loved Ones' and 'Blue Ruin' Directors and More TIFF Midnight Madness

Posted: 11 Aug 2015 03:00 PM PDT

We keep beating this drum, but even if you can't get to a certain film festival (curse you, lack of teleportation!), it's still worthwhile to pay attention to certain lineups, as they can be a forecast for what to pay attention to for the rest of the year. And with that in mind, one of the absolute most crucial line-ups is the Midnight Madness portion of the Toronto International Film Festival (September 10-20, 2015). In the past Midnight Madness has world premiered movies like The Raid, You're Next, Dredd, Kill List, The Loved Ones, Solomon Kane, and Inside, just to name a very select few highlights. And they've just announced this year's roster, which includes new movies from some of the people who made those listed. If you like horror and action and...

Before You Watch 'Straight Outta Compton,' Check Out the Rise of N.W.A.

Posted: 11 Aug 2015 01:30 PM PDT

Straight Outta Compton storms into theaters this weekend with a fierce amount of energy and emotion, signaling what may be the sleeper hit of the summer. Not only does it track the rise of gangsta rap icons N.W.A., but also West Coast hip-hop itself. From N.W.A. members like Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, DJ Yella and MC Ren to Snoop Dogg, Tupac, and Suge Knight, Straight Outta Compton spans some of the most important years in the history of the music genre -- giving you a first-hand look at how a bunch of troublemakers from the hood overcame immense obstacles in their lives to pursue their talents and conquer an industry. It's raw, honest and definitely a little angry, but Straight Outta Compton also packs a good deal of humor and heart -- so much so that we wouldn't be...
