Comics on Film: Life After Hugh Jackman's Wolverine

Posted: 21 Aug 2015 09:00 PM PDT

It’s been said before and it’ll probably be said again: the current comic book movie craze may have had its seeds planted in 1998 by New Line Cinema’s Blade, but it was 2000’s X-Men that catapulted the genre to new heights of success and acceptance by moviegoers everywhere. X-Men was quickly followed by other successful, genre-defining films like Sam Raimi’s original Spider-Man, 2003’s X2: X-Men United, 2004’s Hellboy and Spider-Man 2, and 2005’s Batman Begins. Through all of this – including reboots of the Spider-Man, Superman, Daredevil, Punisher, Hulk, and Fantastic Four franchises – one actor has stood as a guiding beacon...

Who Wants to Buy Buffalo Bill's House From 'The Silence of the Lambs'?

Posted: 21 Aug 2015 07:30 PM PDT

After this week's big news about the iconic Goonies house being covered up to keep fans away, is there anyone who likes the idea of buying a movie location? Even if so, the latest on the market is a particularly tough sell. It's Buffalo Bill's home from The Silence of the Lambs that's become available, and the media calling it a "torture house" might not help its value.  Or maybe it will. A realtor at the agency listing the property told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, "I could see somebody doing something fun with this." Apparently just living in the Southwestern Pennsylvania home isn't what she has in mind. "People love to be scared," she added, reportedly suggesting a horror-themed bed and breakfast. It's...

Watch: 'The Final Girls' Trailer Plays Like a Love Letter to the Slumber-Party Slasher Movie

Posted: 21 Aug 2015 06:04 PM PDT

Genre fans have been buzzing about The Final Girls ever since it premiered at this past SXSW Film Festival (including yours truly). The film -- about a group of contemporary teens who get trapped inside an '80s slasher movie -- is a silly deconstruction of the slasher movie then and now, and reminiscent of films like Scream or Cabin in the Woods -- though not as gory or as frightening. The Final Girls is a horror movie that's got more heart than legit scares. And that's okay because it's inventive and funny, and it features a great ensemble of up-and-coming (but familiar) faces who elevate the material and truly make it worth your time, especially if Friday the 13th is your jam.  Watch the first trailer.   What's fun about The Final Girls is...

'Finders Keepers,' One of the Absolute Best Movies of 2015, Gets a Trailer

Posted: 21 Aug 2015 04:30 PM PDT

Finders Keepers, which premiered at Sundance earlier this year, is without doubt one of the best movies of 2015. That's why it's a bit of a bummer how hard it is to tell just how funny and tragic, how surreal and insightful this miracle of a story is from the trailer that just hit online. But that's understandable, because it's not an easy movie or story to sell in a two-and-a-half minutes. Finders Keepers unravels the increasingly bizarre true story of a man who found a human foot inside a BBQ grill that was inside a storage unit that they bought at auction. But this isn't a murder mystery. We know right away who the foot came from. The question the movie investigates is who the foot belongs to in a legal and ethical sense. That may not sound all that...

New 'Star Wars' Images Find a Clever Way to Pass the Torch to a New Generation

Posted: 21 Aug 2015 03:00 PM PDT

Star Wars: The Force Awakens doesn't hit theaters for another four months, landing it in that torturous zone that's so close it seems like it's just around the corner and yet so far away that it'll never get here. Worse yet, Lucasfilm hasn't released any substantial new footage from the movie for a few months now, so instead we're stuck pouring over Star Wars pictures that, gasp, don't even move! I mean, what are we, kids in the '80s, hunched over under our bed sheets reading magazines for sequel clues? No, we're adults in the 2010s looking at magazine covers on our smart phones. There's a big difference. In case the giant letters didn't make it clear, these new images come courtesy of Empire magazine as part of October's big...

New 'Fifty Shades Darker' Director Touted -- Here's What We Can Expect From the Sequel

Posted: 21 Aug 2015 01:30 PM PDT

Surely one of the most anticipated sequels in recent history, Fifty Shades Darker faces several daunting challenges. What can we expect from the followup to a movie that made more than $500 million at the box office worldwide?   It Will Have a Different Director Back in March, it was announced that Sam Taylor-Johnson, who helmed Fifty Shades of Grey, would not be returning for the sequel. Now it appears that veteran director James Foley, best known for making intense dramas like At Close Range, Glenngarry Glen Ross, and Fear, is the frontrunner to replace her, according to Deadline. In recent years, Foley has turned to television (for example, 12 episodes of the Netflix series House of Cards), which means he knows how to work well within a relatively modest budget. But...

Movie News: Christian Bale Will Drive Michael Mann's 'Ferrari'; Watch a Wacky Animated 'Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials' Video

Posted: 21 Aug 2015 12:00 PM PDT

Ferrari: Christian Bale will star in Ferrari, a drama by director Michael Mann about Italian car magnate Enzo Ferrari. Now all that's needed is someone to pay for and distribute the movie. It's described as a longtime passion project for Mann, who is hoping to shoot the film next summer, and reunite with his Public Enemies (above) star in the lead role. The story unfolds in 1957, a fateful year when an accident involving a Ferrari vehicle, a blown tire, and multiple casualties created a scandal. [Deadline]   The Odyssey: Hugh Jackman is in early talks to star in The Odyssey, a big-budget adaptation of Homer's epic poem, to be directed by Francis Lawrence (the final three installments of The Hunger Games franchise). Jackman would play the heroic Odysseus...
