Alicia Vikander, Elizabeth Debicki Talk Their Kick-Ass 'Man From UNCLE' Characters

Posted:

'Man from UNCLE' Interview - Alicia Vikander & Liz Debecki
"The Man From UNCLE" turns several spy movie tropes on their head, especially when it comes to its strong female characters.

The 1960s-set Cold War romp, based on the TV series of the same name, subverts expectation with its two female leads -- played by Alicia Vikander and Elizabeth Debicki -- and gives the characters much more to do than be damsels in distress or cliched villains. Watch the actors discuss how they worked with director Guy Ritchie to make two of the summer's most engaging characters.

"UNCLE" hits theaters this weekend.

Your First Look at Black Panther on the Set of Marvel's 'Civil War'

Posted:

Comic book movie fans? You're not gonna be disappointed in Black Panther on the big screen.

Images from the Berlin set of "Captain America: Civil War" leaked Wednesday via Instagram, giving us our first look at the Black Panther costume, albeit one worn by a stunt double.

The suit -- which looks very similar to the concept art (above) that Marvel revealed in Fall 2014 -- seems made out of a thick mesh (think the stuff under Batman's armor plates in "The Dark Knight") and accented with the character's traditional claws and tribal-like necklace.

Even more interesting about this on-set photo? It shows Black Panther, played by Chadwick Boseman in the film, seemingly working alongside Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), aka The Winter Soldier.

Does that mean Black Panther isn't as neutral as we were lead to believe? Are he and Winter Soldier teaming up to fight on Cap's side?

We'll find out when "Civil War" hits theaters May 2016.

Bryan Cranston Is Blacklisted From Hollywood in 'Trumbo' Trailer

Posted:

TrumboNobody has the right to tell you how to write - or act, pray, speak, vote, protest, love, and think. That's the message in the new trailer for "Trumbo," which stars Bryan Cranston as the real-life '30s-era screenwriter behind "Spartacus" and "Roman Holiday."

Dalton Trumbo refused to testify in front of the House Un-American Activities Committee and was subsequently blacklisted. But he continued writing screenplays under pseudonyms, and even won two Oscars in exile.
Watch the trailer.

"Trumbo" looks much like the typical prestige Hollywood biopic - big names (Helen Mirren! Louis CK! John Goodman!), stirring speeches, the heart-tugging "am I doing the right thing" moment. Not to say the movie looks banal; Cranston's performance figures to be fantastic. He can drop dry, witty one-liners all the live long day, if it were up to us.

"Trumbo" debuts at the Toronto International Film Festival, then opens in theaters November. 6.

First Full 'The Hateful Eight' Trailer Is Finally Here

Posted:

Enough teasers, posters, and photos. It's time to finally see Quentin Tarantino's "The Hateful Eight" in action! The Weinstein Company just released a solid new "Hateful 8" trailer on August 12. They labeled it an "Official Teaser Trailer" but -- thankfully -- it's not just a tease, it has plenty of footage and a great showcase for several characters.

Samuel L. Jackson launches the trailer with some classic coolness (literally, in a winter storm) and Kurt Russell shares a piece of the plot in a speech to a group of guys in a stagecoach stopover, alongside Jennifer Jason Leigh: "This here is Daisy Domergue. She's wanted dead or alive for murder. That sun comes out, I'm taking this woman to hang. Is there anybody here committed to stopping me from doing that?" Is there? We'll see. We're promised a story about eight strangers with one deadly connection. As Russell's character later teases, "One of them fellas is not what he says he is."

Well, good. That's intriguing. Check it out:

Here's the official synopsis:

In THE HATEFUL EIGHT, set six or eight or twelve years after the Civil War, a stagecoach hurtles through the wintry Wyoming landscape. The passengers, bounty hunter John Ruth (Russell) and his fugitive Daisy Domergue (Leigh), race towards the town of Red Rock where Ruth, known in these parts as "The Hangman," will bring Domergue to justice. Along the road, they encounter two strangers: Major Marquis Warren (Jackson), a black former union soldier turned infamous bounty hunter, and Chris Mannix (Walton Goggins), a southern renegade who claims to be the town's new Sheriff. Losing their lead on the blizzard, Ruth, Domergue, Warren and Mannix seek refuge at Minnie's Haberdashery, a stagecoach stopover on a mountain pass. When they arrive at Minnie's, they are greeted not by the proprietor but by four unfamiliar faces. Bob (Demian Bichir), who's taking care of Minnie's while she's visiting her mother, is holed up with Oswaldo Mobray (Tim Roth), the hangman of Red Rock, cow-puncher Joe Gage (Michael Madsen), and Confederate General Sanford Smithers (Bruce Dern). As the storm overtakes the mountainside stopover, our eight travelers come to learn they may not make it to Red Rock after all..."

"The Hateful Eight" will be released in select theaters on Christmas Day (so it's ready for Oscar consideration) and everywhere on January 8, 2016. What do you think so far?

Watch the trailer.

Warning: 'Game of Thrones' Will End With 'Bittersweet Victory'

Posted:

One does not simply expect a happy ending on "Game of Thrones." It is known. Fans are on standby for the sixth book in George R.R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" series, aka the source material for "Game of Thrones." The HBO show is now filming Season 6 of a planned eight (or more) seasons. GRRM currently has seven books planned -- No. 6 being "The Winds of Winter" and then "A Dream of Spring."

GRRM just had a Q&A with Observer, and the final question was about the series' end game. Here's that portion of the conversation:

The number one question people ask me about the series is whether I think everyone will lose-whether it will end in some horrible apocalypse. I know you can't speak to that specifically, but as a revisionist of epic fantasy-

I haven't written the ending yet, so I don't know, but no. That's certainly not my intent. I've said before that the tone of the ending that I'm going for is bittersweet. I mean, it's no secret that Tolkien has been a huge influence on me, and I love the way he ended Lord of the Rings. It ends with victory, but it's a bittersweet victory. Frodo is never whole again, and he goes away to the Undying Lands, and the other people live their lives. And the Scouring of the Shire-brilliant piece of work, which I didn't understand when I was 13 years old: "Why is this here? The story's over?" But every time I read it I understand the brilliance of that segment more and more. All I can say is that's the kind of tone I will be aiming for. Whether I achieve it or not, that will be up to people like you and my readers to judge.

In case you're not familiar, "The Scouring of the Shire" is the second to last chapter in J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Return of the King." It wasn't covered in the Peter Jackson movie, but it showed Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin returning to the Shire to find it was corrupted and taken over by ruffians led by Saruman. The four of them roused their fellow hobbits to take back the Shire, but the movie just shows the hobbits returning to a relatively unchanged Shire, then Frodo -- who can't really cope with normal life anymore -- leaves Middle-earth.
So it sounds like GRRM is going to go for a realistic approach, which matches what he's already done. Many other authors would've just, for example, given Daenerys Targaryen a fully happy ending/freed slaves stay free victory at Astapor and never returned with news that the city was overtaken by new corrupt forces. But that's the kind of thing that happens in real life -- you cut off the head of the hydra and a new one grows back. We're still guessing Dany (or an undead Jon Snow?) ends up on The Iron Throne when the series ends, but it would be naive to think it'll be easy for our heroes to take and retain power. That chair is just not meant to be comfortable and it's steeped in blood.

But hey! Victory is still victory and we're looking forward to reading GRRM's ending, then seeing it play out on the small screen. Hopefully it happens in that order.

'Pretty Little Liars' Fans Are Hysterically Lost and Livid After 'A' Reveal

Posted:

Let no one say "Pretty Little Liars" fans do not care. They care. Maybe too much. That passion was on full display last night during and after the ABC Family show's Season 6 summer finale. All answers were promised. Some answers were given, but they were not very well received, and many other questions were left hanging. PLL fans responded to the reveal that CeCe Drake was "A" with ... feelings. A lot of anger was tweeted toward showrunner Marlene King.

Here are some reactions from the Internet. WARNING: Strong language is used, because strong feelings were abused:
Haha. Marlene King did answer a few more burning questions in a Q&A with Entertainment Weekly, so check that out if you haven't already done so. She also told Variety there may be a Season 8 and a movie. Is that a good idea or is that just setting fans up for more disappointment?

'The Lion King' Returns! Disney Announces 'The Lion Guard' TV Movie and Series

Posted:

THE LION GUARD - The epic storytelling of Disney's Hakuna matata, everybody! "The Lion King" is returning -- it's the circle of life after all -- with a primetime TV movie this November on the Disney Channel. Disney/ABC just shared details on "The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar," which will follow Kion, the second-born cub of Simba and Nala, as he assumes the role of leader of the Lion Guard, a team of animals tasked with preserving the Pride Lands. This movie event will lead into "The Lion Guard" TV series, premiering in early 2016 on Disney Channels and Disney Junior channels.

A special preview of "The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar" will be presented at Disney's D23 Expo on Sunday, August 16.

Here are more cast and plot details from Disney:

James Earl Jones and Ernie Sabella reprise their roles from "The Lion King" as Mufasa and Pumbaa, alongside Rob Lowe ("The Grinder") as Simba and Gabrielle Union ("Being Mary Jane") as Nala. Max Charles ("The Strain") stars as Kion. The voice cast also includes Joshua Rush ("The Adventures of Puss in Boots") as Kion's best friend, Bunga, a fearless honey badger; Atticus Shaffer ("The Middle") as Ono, an intellectual egret; Diamond White ("Sofia the First") as Fuli, a confident cheetah; and Dusan Brown ("Blaze and the Monster Machines") as Beshte, a friendly and good-spirited hippo.

Additional cast members include: Eden Riegel ("All My Children") as Kiara, Sarah Hyland ("Modern Family") as Tiifu, Madison Pettis as Zuri and Jeff Bennett as Zazu (both from "Jake and the Never Land Pirates"); Andrew Kishino ("Star Wars: The Clone Wars") as Janja, Vargus Mason ("Sofia the First") as Cheezi, Greg Ellis ("Star Wars Rebels") as Mzingo, Khary Payton ("Teen Titans") as Rafiki, and Kevin Schon ("The Lion King's Timon and Pumbaa") as Chungu and Timon.

Set in the African Savanna, "The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar" follows Kion as he assembles the members of the Lion Guard. While traditionally the Lion Guard has been comprised of lions known to be the fiercest, bravest, fastest, strongest and keenest of sight in the Pride Lands, Kion breaks tradition by instead calling upon some of his friends who he believes best exemplify these heroic qualities. Throughout the movie and the series, the diverse team of young animals will learn how to utilize each of their unique abilities to solve problems and accomplish tasks to maintain balance within the Circle of Life, while also introducing young viewers to the vast array of animals that populate the prodigious African landscape."

Look for more details to come out this weekend at D23 and pencil "The Lion Guard" into your schedule for November.

Olsen Twins Respond to Class Action Lawsuit From 40 Interns

Posted:

2014 CFDA Fashion Awards - ArrivalsUnpaid internships are no fun, but 40 current and previous interns of "Full House" alumni Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are now suing the twins' Dualstar Entertainment Group for wage theft. How rude! (Sorry.)

According to USA Today, the class action suit alleges Dualstar should have paid interns minimum wage because they were doing similar jobs as paid employees without receiving any academic or vocational credit. However, the Olsens have now responded to the lawsuit, via a statement from Dualstar's rep Annett Wolf to USA Today:

As an initial matter, Dualstar is an organization that is committed to treating all individuals fairly and in accordance with all applicable laws. The allegations in the complaint filed against Dualstar are groundless, and Dualstar will vigorously defend itself against plaintiff's claims in court, not before the media. Dualstar is confident that once the true facts of this case are revealed, the lawsuit will be dismissed in its entirety."

Dualstar is the parent company of the Olsen twins' fashion labels, Elizabeth and James and The Row. The lead plaintiff in the suit, former design intern Shahista Lalani, says she was hospitalized for dehydration as a result of the internship and claims she was treated poorly by The Row's head technical designer. "She was very demanding," Lalani said. "I was doing the work of three interns. I was talking to her all day, all night. Emails at nighttime for the next day, like 10 p.m. at night." It's like working for "The Devil Wears Prada's" Miranda Priestly, for free.

This is just the latest lawsuit from former interns after the landmark "Black Swan" case, which ruled in favor of two interns who argued they should've been paid for performing administrative duties like fetching coffee and answering phones.

What do you think? Are these interns right to sue for money, credit, better treatment, etc., or do you think they're being too demanding or should've known what they were getting into?

Fall Movie Preview 2015: The 38 Most Must-See Films

Posted:

Out with the spandex, in with the Spanx.

It's tempting to think of fall as the movie season where superhero films clear out of the multiplex, leaving it to grown-up fare -- Oscar hopefuls that are more about character than action. Not so this year.

Sure, there'll be plenty of mature movies from brand-name directors like Spielberg and Tarantino. But there are also several eagerly-awaited installments of blockbuster franchises, including the next James Bond, the final "Hunger Games," and, oh yeah, the first new episode of "Star Wars" in 10 years. Whatever your taste, there are lots of fall movies to get excited about. From "Mockingjay" to "Spectre," here are 36 films you need to see.

Best of Late Night TV: Kristen Stewart's Awkward 'Word Blurt,' Ice Cube's Christmas Card

Posted:

If you're like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don't worry; we've got you covered. Here's the best of what happened last night on late night.

Kristen Stewart -- star of the new movie "American Ultra," and still known for "Twilight," awkwardness, and lip biting -- was on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" Tuesday night and showed she is still not comfortable in the spotlight. She and Jimmy played a game of "Word Blurt" and it should've been light and fun, but instead it was painfully awkward and ended with KStew thinking it was probably a mistake to come on the show. Sometimes Jimmy laughs a little too hard when he's trying to force the fun and he did that again with Kristen.

However, in her sit-down interview, Kristen insisted she does smile on occasion. She's asked about being smiley vs. being sullen all the time and it's probably not helping her mood. She seems OK, though, just not a natural charmer -- which is fine. She's like most of us. It's just odd that she's also a celebrity, since she seems to dislike it so much.
Ice Cube and son O'Shea Jackson Jr. were on "Conan" to promote "Straight Outta Compton" and they discussed police brutality then vs. now. More than 25 years ago, Ice Cube wrote "F--k Tha Police" and he said it doesn't feel good that it's still relevant. On a lighter note, "The Cubes" also shared their family Christmas card -- complete with trademark scowling. (They should invite Kristen Stewart next time!) Donald Trump is pretty much all anyone can talk about these days -- and everyone has a Trump impression -- and Seth Meyers definitely had a lot to say Tuesday night during his (desk-bound) monologue. Anderson Cooper was also a guest and he and Seth discussed making an enemy of The Trump. Trump has never forgiven Seth for the Washington Correspondents Dinner.
