We also got to see a bunch of new stills and artwork for many of these titles. Here's all you need to see and know, in alphabetical order by title: Coco This is Pixar's long-in-development feature based on Dia de los Muertos, aka Mexico's Day of the Dead. Coco is the name of a character in the movie, which is directed by Toy Story 3's Lee Unkrich, but 12-year-old Miguel is the protagonist. We didn't get any new images, but you can see the logo in the event pic above beind Unkrich and producer Daria K. Anderson. Here is the current official synopsis, which is inspired by the idea of... Posted: 14 Aug 2015 09:00 PM PDT Here are a bunch of little bites to satisfy your hunger for movie culture: Movie Mashup of the Day: Many people have noted the similarities between Quentin Tarantino's new movie, The Hateful Eight, and an earlier Kurt Russell movie, The Thing. Well, here's the obligatory mashup trailer to go with that idea (via Live for Films): Trailer Redo of the Day: Speaking of mashups, it's not often we see them with two movies from the same series, but here's a redo of the Mad Max: Fury Road trailer with only clips from Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (via Cinematic Montage Creators): Vintage Image of the Day: In honor of Steve Martin's 70th birthday, here's a photo of him working at Disneyland's Merlin's Magic Shop in... The 2015 Summer Science-Fiction Movie Awards: Best Movie, Character, Scene and More Posted: 14 Aug 2015 07:00 PM PDT There are still a few weeks left in the 2015 summer movie season, but none of the upcoming releases fall within the science fiction genre. So you know what that means -- it's time for The Last Sci-Fi Blog to look back over the past few months and sort through the wreckage. Anything released between May and August is up for discussion. The short version: when it comes to new sci-fi movies, 2015 is looking pale next to the majesty of 2014. But 2015 has Mad Max: Fury Road, so it all balances out in the end. Best New Character: Imperator Furiosa Other movies may have handily out-grossed Mad Max: Fury Road at the box office, but Charlize Theron's Imperator Furiosa loomed large over the entire summer. Seemingly every artist with an internet connection found time to... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Fans Want to Build a Real Minas Tirith From 'The Lord of the Rings' Posted: 14 Aug 2015 06:00 PM PDT The crowdfunding effort to build a complete replica of Minas Tirith, the Middle-earth "City of Kings," is most definitely not to be taken seriously. But it shouldn't be looked at as a complete joke, either. The seemingly over-ambitious group of supposed architects who have gone to Indiegogo with the attempt to raise about $2.9 billion (yes, that's billion) are merely expressing themselves as huge fans of The Lord of the Rings. Or at least satirizing fandom in a way that actually showcases the imaginative, inspired and fun sides of being passionately into something like J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy novels and Peter Jackson's movie adaptations of those books. It's also a celebration of the creative minds (starting with Tolkien's) that conceived of... Comics on Film: Henry Cavill Talks About Who Can Actually Defeat Superman Posted: 14 Aug 2015 01:37 PM PDT As the original superhero, Superman has a revered place in the history of comics and comic book-related media. Because of his place as the one that started it all, some people continue to hold onto certain preconceived notions about the Man of Steel that they either can’t see or outright refuse to cast aside even when confronted with contrary evidence. Working in a comic book store for a number of years, it was very easy to see that in the 21st century Superman always seems to have to climb an uphill battle. Whether people think the character has passed his prime, or that he comes with too many limitations on people who want to tell stories with him, they just can’t recognize that so many perceptions exist about him that, frankly, are wrong. One of the most... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Posted: 14 Aug 2015 12:00 PM PDT Bad Boys 3: As we recently learned, two new Bad Boys sequels are heading to theaters in 2017 and 2019. But will either Will Smith or Martin Lawrence return as the titular rule-breaking police detectives? It's not clear. Reportedly, Smith will be involved in some capacity, but that could be limited to serving as a producer and not as a star; his deal is not finalized. Smith declined to star in the upcoming Independence Day sequel, so there's certainly no guarantee that he'll show up on screen in more Bad Boys sequels. [The Hollywood Reporter] Are We There Yet? The Mars Edition: With his new movie Straight Outta Compton opening in theaters today, director F. Gary Gray (above) is contemplating going to space for his next project. He says he is "heavily...
