7 Essential Meryl Streep Performances You Have to See

Posted:

Meryl Streep has ruined us.

She's so routinely nominated for Oscars (19 times so far, more than any actor in history) that it's almost shocking when she's not. In recent years, she's taken on more musical parts, proving to us that, not only can she sing beautifully, but she can even shred on rhythm guitar -- a skill the 66-year-old learned for her latest film, "Ricki and the Flash" (opening August 7).

In honor of her latest film, we look back at her 40-year career to find her seven best performances that any movie fan needs to see.

How Many People Watched Jon Stewart's Final 'The Daily Show'?

Posted:

Jon Stewart did not say goodbye on his emotional final episode of "The Daily Show," he just said he was going out for a drink. But how many people tuned in to see his emotional #JonVoyage after 16 years on Comedy Central?

According to Deadline, last night's August 6 finale was watched by 3.5 million viewers, with 1.8 million in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demo. That made it the second most-watched "Daily Show" episode after the 3.6 million who tuned in for a visit from then-presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama on October 28, 2008. The numbers are close, though, and 3.5 million for Jon's farewell is up from the 2.5 million for "The Colbert Report" finale last year. That was the Stephen Colbert show's largest audience.

Stephen returned to "The Daily Show" last night and his touching tribute to Jon was one of the night's highlights:

Sniff. Wasn't that beautiful? The new guy, Trevor Noah, also had a cameo last night when he pretended to measure the furniture and Jon asked him to just wait 20 more minutes and it would all be his. Trevor takes over "The Daily Show" on September 28 and Stephen takes on "The Late Show" on September 8.

Elle Fanning's 'About Ray' Trailer Shows Transgender Transition Challenges

Posted:

Elle Fanning, Naomi Watts, and Susan Sarandon star in the new movie "About Ray," showing how one teen's transition from a girl named Ramona to a boy named Ray affects his entire family. The Weinstein Company just released the first trailer, which opens with a frank discussion on mood swings and menstrual cycles, and leads to questions like this:

Susan Sarandon's Dolly: "Why can't she just be a lesbian?"
Naomi Watts' Maggie: "Because she's not a lesbian, Mom, she's a ... boy."

The trailer shows Ray getting into a fight with other kids while his mom struggles not only with the fear that he may change his mind later in life, but with the fact that she has to track down his absent father to get his consent for the transition.

Here's the synopsis from The Weinstein Company:

ABOUT RAY tells the stirring and touching story of three generations of a family living under one roof in New York as they must deal with the life-changing transformation by one that ultimately affects them all. Ray (Elle Fanning) is a teenager who has come to the realization that she isn't meant to be a girl and has decided to transition from female to male. His single mother, Maggie (Naomi Watts), must track down Ray's biological father (Tate Donovan) to get his legal consent to allow Ray's transition. Dolly (Susan Sarandon), Ray's lesbian grandmother is having a hard time accepting that she now has a grandson. They must each confront their own identities and learn to embrace change and their strength as a family in order to ultimately find acceptance and understanding."

Here's the powerful, emotional -- but also warm and funny -- trailer:

We should all have parents as wonderful and accepting as Ray's mom! "About Ray" opens September 18. It looks like it's going to be a great showcase for both Elle Fanning and Naomi Watts, and -- who knows -- we may see their names come up around Oscar time.

Watch the trailer.

J.K. Rowling Reveals Her Horcrux Object (If She Had One)

Posted:

If you're ever fortunate enough to have an audience with "Harry Potter" queen J.K. Rowling, keep an eye on her tea protocol. Is she, perhaps, a little careful around certain items? There could be a reason for that. HP fans know that Horcruxes are bad news -- objects in which dark wizards hide pieces of their souls. Horcruxes are so evil even the official magic texts refuse to explain how to make them. He Who Must Not Be Named had seven of them, after multiple murders. So you can imagine author Rowling was a bit taken aback at the idea of having her own Horcrux.

Still, a fan asked what she'd have as a Horcrux object and she answered:
That led to a series of follow-up questions on the stability of a teabag as a Horcrux (it might be better as a portkey) and other Potter world queries, like what were Fred and George's Patronuses.

Rowling does tweet quite frequently about tea, so it's no surprise she'd pick that as a (possible) Horcrux. In fact, her previous tweet teased an upcoming lesson on loose tea and the proper use of the strainer. That came after other tea-making tips, and the announcement that "Tea takes skill, not nerve. Tea is not to be made recklessly." Don't mess with her tea!

Have you ever thought about what you'd use as a Horcrux, if you even knew how to make one? It's kind of a dark topic, but since it's hypothetical ... maybe an old stuffed animal?

Is Louis C.K. Breaking Up With 'Louie'? FX Show on 'Extended Hiatus'

Posted:

Night Of Too Many Stars Autism BenefitLouis C.K. gave his own show the old "it's not you, it's me" treatment, taking a break from "Louie" for an undefined period while he sees other projects. FX had its TCAs press talk on Friday and FX Productions CEO John Landgraf said "Louie" is on "extended hiatus" after 61 episodes. The most recent Season 5 finished airing its eight episodes in May.

As Landgraf put it (via TVLine), "Louis is anxious to take a break from the show and work on other things." When is the show expected to return? "I truly don't know." He said a comparison to Larry David's on-off "Curb Your Enthusiasm" may be "the right analogy." Apparently he would like the show to run for 20 years, but it's up to Louis. They haven't canceled the series or anything; it's not "goodbye," it's just "we really really hope to see you later."

Variety noted that the departure was blamed on scheduling, since Louis is an executive producer on three other projects for FX - including the clown comedy "Baskets" and single mother/actress comedy "Better Things." "Louie" is no stranger to making fans wait -- the show took a two-year break after Season 3. Maybe absence will once again make the heart grow fonder, and make the comedy even sharper since they'll air it when it's ready not just when they need it to fill FX's lineup.

Are you sorry to hear "Louie" is taking an extended break?

'AHS: Hotel' Characters (Including Lady Gaga's) Revealed

Posted:

The 2015 TCA press tour is under way and Friday, August 7 marked FX's turn to present their upcoming programming slate to critics. "American Horror Story: Hotel" kicked things off with a star-studded panel featuring Finn Wittrock, Cheyenne Jackson, Denis O'Hare, Chloe Sevigny, Matt Bomer, Wes Bentley, Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates, co-creator Brad Falchuk and showrunner Ryan Murphy. Sorry, guys -- no Lady Gaga this time. (She starts shooting next week.)

Details on "AHS: Hotel" have pretty much been kept under wraps up until today, but fortunately, each cast member finally teased a little bit about their characters, and we were right were there to take in all the juicy new details. Here's what what know about "AHS: Hotel" so far:

-It will take place in Downtown Los Angeles.

-According to Ryan Murphy, this season "harkens back to the first season. It's much more rooted in honest, primal fears as the first season was."

-Brad Falchuk calls this installment "more noir, more moody."

-"Glee" alum Darren Criss will be joining the cast.

-Finn Wittrock revealed he plays a male model named Tristan Duffy, "who's always looking for the next high, and I think he sort of finds the biggest high in Lady Gaga."

-Newbie Cheyenne Jackson plays Will Drake, a "fashion icon who moves from New York to LA. He's a father. He's a little desperate."

-Denis O'Hare plays Elizabeth Taylor. He's not actually THE Elizabeth Taylor, but is inspired by her. O'Hare noted that he shaved his head "and other body parts" for the role.

-Chloe Sevigny plays Alex Lowell, the wife of Wes Bentley. She's "a doctor and a mother dealing with a great loss in our family."

-Matt Bomer is Donovan, who will be "closely associated with Miss Gaga and Ms. Bates and Mr. Wittrock, among others. "He has very interesting relationships with the lady folk in his life."

-Wes Bentley plays John Lowell, wife of Alex. His investigation of "grisly murders" will lead him to check into the hotel.

-Angela Bassett plays Ramona Royale (best name ever?), a sexy actress who does not live at the hotel, but has a "strong relationship with Stephanie's [Lady Gaga] character."

-Kathy Bates plays Iris, who runs the hotel and happens to hate Sarah Paulson's character. Bates remarked that she's "very, very sexy" and "does crossword puzzles in her spare time."

-Sarah Paulson plays the "quite dark and quite sexy" drug-addicted Sally. Sally lives at the hotel and hates Iris in "an ancient way that will be revealed later." "I have a budding something with Wes Bentley's character," Paulson revealed.

Ryan Murphy went on to describe Lady Gaga's role: "Lady Gaga's character is named Elizabeth, and she is a very wealthy social doyenne who is consumed with art and fashion and people. She has a nefarious plan that is revealed in the first episode and will play out during the course of the season."

FX announced this morning that "American Horror Story: Hotel" will premiere on October 7. Let the countdown begin, little monsters.

'Modern Family' Recasts Joe, Sofia Vergara Shares First Photo of New Son

Posted:

Meet the new Joe! When "Modern Family" Season 7 premieres on Wednesday, September 23, we'll be seeing a different Fulgencio Pritchett, aka Joe, son of Gloria (Sofia Vergara) and Jay (Ed O'Neill). The toddler was played for the past two seasons by Pierce Wallace, but ABC recast the role with Jeremy Maguire. According to TVLine, Jeremy turns 4 on August 10. The site said producers wanted to recast the role as Joe will be "rough and tumble" this season, as a yin to Manny's yang.

Here's Joe's on-screen mom showing him off:

Isn't he the cutest? They do look like they could be mother and son. (While Joe ages, Gloria just keeps looking younger every year.) This isn't the first time "Modern Family" has aged-up its kids. Aubrey Anderson-Emmons joined the show as older Lily, Mitch and Cam's daughter, Lily, in a role that was previously played by young twins Ella and Jaden Hiller.

Welcome to the "Family," Jeremy!

Darren Criss Joins 'AHS: Hotel' in Juicy Anti-'Glee' Role

Posted:

32nd Annual Paleyfest - "Glee" just about sums up our thoughts on "American Horror Story: Hotel." Everything we hear about it makes us want to ring that bell for service stat. The show's premiere date was just revealed as Wednesday, October 7 at 10 p.m., and details are coming out about "Glee" alum Darren Criss' new role.

Here's the latest from Ryan Murphy, via Entertainment Weekly:

Do you have any scoop on the upcoming season of American Horror Story? - Tanya
We already know that Darren Criss will be checking into Hotel for the big Halloween outing, playing a hipster who shows up with his girlfriend. And this character is going to be very different from Blaine Anderson. "This role for Darren, we wrote it and he was the first person we thought of because Darren has told me he wants to do edgier, darker material, so this plays into that," executive producer Ryan Murphy teases. But the real question is whether he'll be leaving those bow ties behind.

E! News had a previous report noting that Darren was in talks for the role of Justin, described as "a Silver Lake hipster who heads to the hotel on Halloween with his equally hip girlfriend to escape pesky trick-or-treaters. But after one too many room service demands, Kathy Bates' character, the head of the hotel, gives Criss' character a Halloween trick they will never forget. Let that sink in for a moment: Kathy Bates vs. Darren Criss. Yeah. We're in."

Completely. Sign us up for some schooling from Kathy Bates. "AHS: Hotel" has a massive cast, including a ton of returning AHS faves and newbies like Lady Gaga. And, as Ryan Murphy noted during Comic-Con, "Hotel" is set in the AHS universe, so we'll see some crossovers:

We have a long-term plan with the show. Things are connected. So characters are connected to different seasons. [Pepper] obviously is the first. This season you'll see more and more of that. Characters from previous seasons will come back and check into the hotel. It's part of a connected universe with a pretty cool thesis statement at the end of the run."

A thesis! If only we'd known we could major in "American Horror Story," things could've been so different. Are you excited to see Darren get edgy and annoyingly hipsterish in "AHS: Hotel"?

'Fantastic Four' Director Reacts to Bad Reviews in Deleted Tweet

Posted:

The "Fantastic Four" reboot has faced nothing but problems from the start, and now even the director appears to be distancing himself from the final version. The new movie, which currently has only a 10% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, reportedly had set tensions between director Josh Trank and Fox executives, and The Hollywood Reporter said producers Simon Kinberg and Hutch Parker stepped in to finish the movie with reshoots just a few months before opening.

Perhaps that's what Josh was referencing in a tweet he sent out August 6, the day before his movie's official opening; the message was promptly deleted -- but not before the Internet saved it for posterity:
Josh Trank has yet to respond, tweet anything new, or go for the classic "I was hacked."

This is just the latest unfortunate bit of news for the movie. F4 was attacked by some fans for casting Michael B. Jordan as a black Johnny Storm, Kate Mara faced stupid questions about her short hair and sexy toes, Miles Teller just got bashed by Esquire (the cast all tweeted in his defense), and Jamie Bell was finally dragged into the silliness when asked about The Thing's penis on "Watch What Happens Live."

It's possible all the insane chatter will just make viewers curious to see "Fantastic Four" and perhaps fans will be pleasantly surprised if it doesn't turn out to be the new "Ishtar." But it sounds like the franchise may be cursed ... unless Marvel can save it?

An 'Empire' Spinoff About Cookie? Yes, Please

Posted:

EmpireWhen the Cookie is this good, you just want more of it - and that's exactly what "Empire" creator Lee Daniels wants to give us.

At yesterdays TCA panel for the Fox drama, Daniels said he's planning for an "Empire" spinoff, and that he thinks it should revolve around Taraji P. Henson's firecracker character. "I think there is going to be a spinoff from 'Empire,' without question," he told reporters.

"There's so much ripe story that we've talked about already, about Cookie's family, what makes her her. That in itself is fascinating to me."

(Somewhere, Boo Boo Kitty is stewing in jealousy.)

But while a Cookie spinoff sounds fabulous and eminently GIF-able - not to mention the clothes - executive producer Brian Grazer put the brakes on the idea, wanting to make sure the mother ship continues to sail smoothly and "never gets corny."

"As long as it stays dangerous, we're cool. As long as we can stay that way for this season, these guys can think about a spinoff," he said.

8 Times Mulder Made Us Laugh Our Ass Off on 'The X-Files'

Posted:

"The X-Files" is a funnier show than audiences give it credit.

When Agents Mulder and Scully weren't getting super serious with their investigations into the reach of the CSM's alien conspiracy, or struggling to survive "Monsters of the Week," the series would churn out some excellent comedic entries -- often times at the tongue-in-cheek expense of the show's dramatic core.

And no one proved to better at making us laugh with -- and at -- the proceedings than Fox Mulder. The series' willingness to make such broad tonal shifts arguably contributed to it being such a fan favorite, especially when it involved Mulder being goofy or making a charming ass out of himself.

In honor of David Duchovny's birthday today, here are some of our favorite LOLs at Mulder's expense.

Best of Late Night TV: Joel McHale's Tug-of-War and Salma Hayek's Pup Quiz

Posted:

If you're like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don't worry; we've got you covered. Here's the best of what happened last night on late night.

"Pretty Little Liars" is finally telling fans who A is, and Lucy Hale stopped by "Late Night" to dish on how the show's revealing all its secrets during the finale. Yeah, we've heard that before. Trust no one.

So, Ice T and Coco are having a baby (you're welcome, world!), and they chatted about Coco's burgeoning baby bump on "Late Night." Turns out she got pregnant within two months of trying due to "Mr. Super Sperm."

Salma Hayek stopped by "The Tonight Show" to play Pup Quiz with Jimmy Fallon (because of course). Correct answers won an adorable puppy, so yes, this is the most amazing game ever.

Get this: Joel McHale and James Corden played tug-of-war last night of "The Late Late Show," and -- spoiler alert -- James lost. Like, pitifully. Praying for him.
