Recap of 'Pretty Little Liars' Season 6 Episode 9: Prom Night, Prom Fright!

Posted:

PRETTY LITTLE LIARS -
Good news, everyone: despite the fact that there is a teen-killing murderer at large, Rosewood High is still going ahead with its prom -- and the little liars are getting in on the action. For some reason, the liars think it's a great idea to attend their school dance (note: it's not), and they head to the event only to get -- you guessed it -- attacked by A. It's like, have they learned nothing from starring in the previous four seasons of this show?

Keep reading our "Pretty Little Liars" recap to find out what secrets the girls unravel as they attend what has to be the most whack prom that's ever been thrown.

The Liars Continue to Make Questionable Decisions, Live #ThatBarnPromLife

The liars are banned from prom for obvious reasons, but don't worry -- Spencer's mom offers to throw them a mock dance in her barn. Because that sounds fun!!!! Fortunately, Charles lures Ali to the actual dance, which gives the liars an excuse to follow her with their respective boyfriends. And no, they don't tell the police -- which actually isn't a big deal because apparently Clarke's been an undercover cop this entire time. Who knew?

But before we talk more about this hilarious revelation (and the fact that the Rosewood Police Department is literally incapable of hiring anyone over the age of 19), let's discuss the liars' respective dating lives.

First up, Aria. Despite our hopes and prayers, this burgeoning photographer is going to prom with Ezra -- aka her former stalker / teacher. But even more alarming, she peeps Ezra's phone and finds out that he's booked a flight to Thailand and is joining Habitat for Humanity (LOLing forever). Hopefully he'll stay away from high schoolers while there.

Meanwhile, Spencer goes to prom Toby (who's forgiven her for that one time he got high on gummy bears), while Hanna goes with Caleb, who -- wait for it -- has just been recruited as a hacker in New York City. No words. Oh, and if you're wondering about Emily, she opts to take A's original victim, Sara, as her date -- despite the fact that she's clearly evil.

The Liars' Moms Get Wasted, Remain Terrible Parents

So, what are the liars' parents up to while their daughters are running around prom? Getting drunk. Yep, the absent mothers of Rosewood band together for a night of wine guzzling, fail to notice their children sneak out, and then break into Ali's house in the hopes of accusing her dad of murder. Good, awkward times.

Unfortunately, Kenneth DiLaurentis is nowhere to be found, and instead the Pretty Middle Aged Liars come face-to-face with Reese Matthews, who may or may not be Charles. You'd think at this point they'd head outside and talk to the police, but instead they get themselves locked in Ali's basement. Yikes.

Meanwhile at Prom....

So, not only does Secret Agent Clarke totally fail to protect Ali due to the fact that Ezra and Caleb block him (thanks for nothing, boys), Ali promptly gets herself kidnapped by A while navigating her high school dance. Sure, the liars run around trying to find her with their group of policeman BFFs, but they come up short and Ali ends up stuck in a tunnel with A. But the best part? A takes off his hoodie and Ali's reaction is pure shock and horror. Looks like she's just seen a familiar face....

Burning Questions:

1. If A's at prom, who locked the liars' moms in the DiLaurentis basement?
2. Is Reese Matthews Charles DiLaurentis? And more importantly, is Charles
DiLaurentis A?
3. Mona was noticeably absent this week. Should we be on A alert?
4. Ezra disappeared at the end of the episode. Less of a question and more of a just sayin'.

'Lion King' Animator Posts Tribute Image of Cecil the Lion

Posted:

Cecil as Lion King
Cecil the Lion may have been tragically murdered, but his memory lives on in the hearts of animal lovers around the world.

One of those is Aaron Blaise, an animator who worked on "Lion King," "Aladdin," and "Beauty and the Beast." He rendered a stunning tribute image of Cecil, which he posted to his website.

"Like many people around the world, I was extremely moved by the recent tragedy surrounding the hunting and killing of the beloved lion know as Cecil," he wrote.
Cecil as Lion King
In the image, Cecil appears as a cloud in the sky above three young lions. It's accompanied by a quote from "The Lion King": "Look at the stars. The great kings from the past look down upon us from those stars."

Blaise also posted this time-lapse video showing how he created the tribute:

Though Blaise said his work was "not much," he hoped "it will make people think."

'Sneaky Pete' Trailer: Giovanni Ribisi Is a Con Man in Bryan Cranston's Amazon Pilot

Posted:

Watch theSneaky PeteLiar, liar ... Giovanni Ribisi's pants are on fire in this new trailer for "Sneaky Pete," a drama pilot that will debut on Amazon this Friday.

"Sneaky Pete" is a drama co-created by "Breaking Bad" star Bryan Cranston and "House" creator David Shore. It stars Ribisi as a con man who steals his cellmate Pete's identity when he gets out of prison. He shows up at Pete's grandparents' home and starts working for their bail bond business.

Watch the trailer.

Cranston himself shows up as a menacing, but "reasonable" man who demands "Pete" pay him money within seven days. Margo Martindale also stars as Pete's grandma.

The pilot will stream on Amazon Prime Instant, where viewers can vote on whether it should be made into a full series. With such a great cast and an interesting set-up, it's hard to see "Sneaky Pete" not getting the greenlight.

Love Is Dead: Kermit and Miss Piggy Have Broken Up

Posted:

MuppetsThe summer of 2015 is when love died. Ben and Jen. Blake and Miranda. Gavin and Gwen. And now -- sob -- Kermit and Miss Piggy!

Kermit first broke the news to reporters about the breakup at the "Muppets" panel at TCA, then confirmed it via an official statement on Twitter.

"Piggy and I have gone our separate ways romantically. It can be tough to work with your ex," he said, referring to the new "Muppets" show which will debut this fall on ABC. Not only have Kermit and Piggy broken up, but the frog has already moved on - with another pig! He revealed he is dating a pig named Denise who works in marketing at ABC. "I do have an attraction to pigs," Kermit admitted.

As for Miss Piggy, who arrived late and in dramatic fashion to the panel, she shrugged off possible tensions on set. "I have no problem working with my ex, OK? It's fine," she said. "You know what? Dating moi is like flying close to the sun. It was inevitable that Kermit would drop down to the ground while I stayed in the heavens."

'Babe': 20 Things You (Probably) Didn't Know About the Talking Pig Movie

Posted:

"That'll do, pig. That'll do."

It's been 20 years since the world fell in love with the sheep-herding pig at the center of the film "Babe," which opened August 4, 1995. The movie was hailed as a kids' movie that delighted viewers of all ages -- it was the rare children's film nominated for a Best Picture Oscar -- as well as an advance in effects magic that launched a wave of live-action, talking-animal flicks.

It's hard to imagine that the G-rated classic came from George Miller, the same filmmaker behind the ultra-violent, hard-R "Mad Max" franchise. That's one of many things you may not know about "Babe," here are 19 more:

1. In 1986, producer/co-screenwriter Miller became interested in the story during a long plane flight from Sydney to London, where the woman seated next to him was laughing uproariously at Dick King-Smith's book, "The Sheep-Pig." Upon landing, he found the book in a bookstore and immediately began negotiating with King-Smith for the rights, a process that ultimately took years.

2. Part of the reason it took nearly a decade to get the film made was British author King-Smith's objection to Miller's insistence on shooting the film in his native Australia. He told Miller, "Pigs don't fly, and neither do I."

3. The other reason it took so long: Miller was waiting for technology to catch up with his vision of putting live, talking animals on screen.

4. The animals were a combination of real critters trained by Californian Karl Lewis Miller (the animal trainer behind the "Beethoven" films and "Cujo"), the London-based Jim Henson's Creature Shop, and John Cox's Creature Shop in Australia, which built animatronic animals to match the real ones.

5. Karl Miller also appears in the film as the man who buys three puppies.
6. To make the animals talk, the filmmakers relied on computerized mouth movements developed by Los Angeles effects house Rhythm & Hues, best known for the talking cat in "Hocus Pocus" and the Coca-Cola polar bear ads.

7. There were 48 purebred, Large White Yorkshire pigs cast as Babe, since the filming was spread out over the course of three years, and the pigs kept outgrowing the role. All the Babes were female, since the male pigs' genitals were far too visible on screen.

8. Some 500 animals appear in the movie, though Karl Miller trained 970 of them -- not just pigs, but also dogs, cats, sheep, cows, horses, goats, ducks, mice, and pigeons.

9. Christine Cavanaugh, a voiceover actress best-known for playing Chuckie Finster on "Rugrats" and Dexter on "Dexter's Laboratory," voiced the role of Babe.

10. Magda Szubanski was one of Australia's most popular comic actors when she was cast as Esme Hoggett. She was only 34 at the time; make-up was used to age her 20 years.

11. Miller said at the time of the film's release, "Babe" cost $20 million to make, though some reports said $25 or $30 million. Even at the higher price, that sounds like an incredible bargain by today's standards.

12. The movie earned $64 million in North America and a total of $254 million worldwide.
13. Before starring as Farmer Arthur Hoggett in "Babe," James Cromwell was best known for playing Mr. Skolnick in the four "Revenge of the Nerds" movies. He was 55 when "Babe" gave him his big break -- and an Oscar nom for Best Supporting Actor. He has said he almost decided not to take the role because it had only about 16 lines of dialogue, but a friend convinced him that the free trip to Australia would be worth it.

14. "Babe" was nominated for seven Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director (for Chris Noonan), Best Adapted Screenplay (for Miller and Noonan), Best Editing, and Best Art Direction. Best Supporting Actor nominee Cromwell reportedly spent $60,000 of his own money campaigning for the trophy. But the movie's only win was for Best Visual Effects.

15. The film was briefly banned in Malaysia. Some reports said it was because the Muslim country objected to a film about a pig, but actually, it was because the name "Babe" is considered vulgar there. Eventually, it was released there on VHS, bypassing theaters.

16. Cromwell, who was already a vegetarian, went the rest of the way and became a strict vegan and committed animal-rights activist after "Babe," His career prospered, with prominent roles in "Star Trek: First Contact," "L.A. Confidential," and "The Green Mile."

17. Cromwell, Szubanski, and most of the voice actors returned for the 1998 sequel, "Babe: Pig in the City." Cavanaugh declined to return and was replaced by her "Rugrats" castmate, Elizabeth Daily. Director Noonan also sat out the sequel, which George Miller directed and co-wrote. Many critics found it superior to the original, but the dark tone and occasional animal violence made families squeamish, and the film was a flop.

18. Cavanaugh died in 2014, at age 51, from undisclosed causes.

19. Chris Noonan's most recent feature film directing job was 2006's "Miss Potter," another movie involving anthropomorphic animals -- it was the biopic of children's author Beatrix Potter, starring Renee Zellweger.

20. After "Babe: Pig in the City," George Miller made another animal film -- the 2006 hit, "Happy Feet" -- followed by its 2011 sequel. These three films were his only releases over the last 20 years, until 2015's critically-acclaimed success "Mad Max: Fury Road."

Fight for Gay Rights Hits the Streets in 'Stonewall' Trailer

Posted:

StonewallLGBT rights have come a long way in the last 30 years - consider this summer's tremendous Supreme Court decision allowing same-sex marriage in all 50 states - but the fight for equality had to start somewhere. And that place was in New York City at the Stonewall Inn in 1969, and the story is coming to the big screen.

Here's the first trailer for "Stonewall" - directed by Roland Emmerich, written by Jon Robin Baitz - which centers on Danny (Jeremy Irvine), a young man who escapes to New York after being kicked out of his home.

There, he befriends a group of street kids, who take him to a local bar called the Stonewall Inn. But it's a shady place, run by the mafia, and the manager (Ron Perlman) colludes with the corrupt cops who harass and beat up Danny and his friends. The community's building rage explodes one night when the police raid Stonewall Inn - and the ensuing riot kickstarts the fight for gay rights.

"Stonewall" will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and open in theaters Sept. 25.

Posted:

The only thing we love more than movies are movies about animals. Especially of the adorbs variety.

Ever since Lassie, Hollywood knows how to tug on our heartstrings -- giving us a considerable case of "all the feels" whenever movie stars of the furry and/or four-legged kind grace the screen. And it doesn't matter if they're real-life animals or fictional, cartoon ones -- from "Frozen" to "How to Train Your Dragon," we love 'em all.

In honor of "Babe" -- both the movie and the pig -- turning 20 this week, here are 15 of the most adorable animals ever made (both live-action and animated), ranked by their cute factor.

'You're the Worst' Season 2 Trailer Keeps It Awesome

Posted:

You're the WorstOf all the romantic comedies that debuted on TV last year (remember "A to Z"? "Marry Me"? "Selfie"? Didn't think so), one managed to actually be funny and make it through the treacherous cancellation waters. That was "You're the Worst."

FXX just released a new trailer for season 2, which proves "You're the Worst" is still the best. Terrible-but-awesome couple Jimmy (Chris Geere) and Gretchen (Aya Cash) are now living together, though they still are going to try not to be "disgusting normals."
"Keep it awesome for as long as you can, for all of us who let love die by becoming ordinary," pleads Gretchen's friend Lindsay (Kether Donohue).

Becoming ordinary doesn't seem like something Jimmy and Gretchen could ever do, and the trailer shows us glimpses of how messed up both of them still are (Jimmy wakes up in his underwear on a Google Maps-type car, both are drinking heavily, etc).

"You're the Worst" season 2 premieres Sept. 9 on FXX.

Alexander Skarsgård Is Gorgeous in Drag at 'Diary of a Teenage Girl' Premiere

Posted:

Premiere Of Alexander Skarsgård is one of Hollywood's hottest men -- and it seems he's one of the hottest women, too.

The actor dressed in drag for the premiere of his new movie, "Diary of a Teenage Girl," last night in San Francisco. He donned a feathered blond wig and strutted down the red carpet in a glittery gold dress and silver sandals. The look was very '70s, which is when the movie is set.

It's unclear why Skarsgård dressed as a woman for the premiere, as he doesn't play a drag queen in the movie. Perhaps it was a nod to co-star Joshua Grannell, a drag performer who goes by the name Peaches Chris, who does. Here's a better look.alexander skarsgard in dragThe coming-of-age movie centers on Minnie (Bel Powley), a San Francisco teen who embarks on a journey of sexual evolution after losing her virginity to her mother's boyfriend (Skarsgard). Kristen Wiig stars as Minnie's mom.

"Diary of a Teenage Girl" opens in limited release this Friday.

Matt Damon Has an Aquaman Question in New 'Martian' Video

Posted:

The MartianIf you had to spend 10 days in total isolation, what would you think about? Maybe how Aquaman can control whales?

"The Martian" released a "behind the scenes" video of the Ares 3 crew preparing for their mission to Mars. The crew members are interviewed by a psychologist after a 10-day isolation test. And what they thought about did in that time - and how they respond to the psychologist - is illuminating.

Matt Damon's astronaut, Mark Watney, pondered that deep question about Aquaman's abilities. Watch to see what Jessica Chastain, Michael Peña, Kate Mara, Sebastian Stan, and Aksel Hennie had to say.

Watch the video.

In "The Martian," Watney is left alone on Mars after being presumed dead and the Ares 3 crew leaves the planet. He has to use some ingenuity to stretch his meagre supplies and find a way to contact Earth to try to find a way to return home. The movie opens October 2.

'Game of Thrones' Adds Max Von Sydow as Three-Eyed Raven

Posted:

FRANCE-FILM-FESTIVAL-CANNESWatch out, Bran Stark - Max von Sydow is coming for you!

The legendary actor ("Minority Report," "Star Wars: The Force Awakens") is joining the cast of "Game of Thrones" in season 6 as the Three-Eyed Raven, a mystical being who teaches Bran (Isaac Hempstead-Wright) to use his gifts as a warg. The character was last seen in the season 4 finale, played by Struan Rodger.

Von Sydow won't have a ton of screen time, but will be highly influential Bran's storyline was put on hold this year, to allow space for other plots, but the young Stark will return having spent time under the Three-Eyed Raven's tutelage. Showrunner David Benioff likened it to Luke Skywalker's training with Yoda.

"Like, it would be far less interesting, after 'The Empire Strikes Back' to have an hour-long movie in between 'Empire' and 'Return of the Jedi' where Luke is training," he told Entertainment Weekly.

Best of Late Night TV: Obama Calls Trump With Advice, Meryl Streep's Guitar Lesson, 'Flinch' Game

Posted:

If you're like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don't worry; we've got you covered. Here's the best of what happened last night on late night.

Since Gawker leaked Donald Trump's phone number, "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" did a bit where President Obama called Trump with debate advice. Cue Jimmy's impressive impression of The Donald and his constant interruptions and number dumping: Trump: "I don't understand, why would you want to help me become president?" Obama: "Uh, because it'd be hilarious? Look, I've been president for eight years, I'm ready for some entertainment. I just want to grab some popcorn, sit back, and watch this whole sh-tshow go down." Haha. Watch the whole video for their "Cheerleader" duet. Please say it's true that Trump's debate will indeed be auto-tuned. Meryl Streep was on "The Tonight Show" to promote her new movie "Ricki and the Flash." She didn't get to say too much because Jimmy dominated the conversation with his gushing, but she told Jimmy she used to think she looked fat and had a weird nose in old films. She was tough on herself, like many women can be. Looking back, she thinks "my god, what was my problem?" In the second video, talking about the movie, she said Neil Young gave her her first guitar lesson, and she described what it was like to play a failed rock star.

Jerrod Carmichael was also on "The Tonight Show" to talk about his new HBO special. He also gushed over Meryl Streep and said her career is so strong it could even survive a face tattoo. Test that theory, Meryl!
Matt LeBlanc, William H. Macy, and Don Cheadle were on "The Late Late Show with James Corden," and it was magical. They played a game called "Flinch," putting someone behind a glass barrier while others threw stuff at them, and it was their job not to flinch. Classic. The three actors all share a love of riding motorcycles. You have to love Don Cheadle's explanation of how he got his ride. James proposed the four of them start a "mean" motorcycle gang and they were down for it. "Fantastic Four" star Miles Teller was on "Late Night with Seth Meyers" to talk about the movie. Miles admitted he was not a comic book fan before being in F4, but it was his dad's favorite comic book.
Seth got into the game act with a fun quiz called "Fortune Cookie or True Detective Quote?" playing off the ridiculous dialogue in the HBO show. They really nailed the tone.
Conan drank some Truth Serum and "couldn't lie" after that point. So Andy Richter asked him a series of questions. What did he really do over the break? The Food Network and Mike's Hard Lemonade are involved. "If someone made a movie about your genitals, what would it be called?" "Ant Man."
Ice-T and Coco were both on "Conan" and she's 5.5 months pregnant with a baby girl, but still barely showing. She said her boobs somehow got even bigger and she has to lift them up. Conan said he and Andy are always there for her.
