New on DVD/Blu-ray: 'Citizenfour,' 'Big Game,' 'The Last Dragon' and More Posted: 26 Aug 2015 10:30 PM PDT A true must-see movie Citizenfour: The story of Edward Snowden is a complicated one, but regardless if you think he's a hero, a patriot, a traitor, or some combination of all three, you owe it to yourself to see Citizenfour. This is a nuanced, measured, infinitely insightful look at one of the most important news events of the last several years. However, what makes Citizenfour such a must-see documentary isn't that it further blows the lid off of the NSA's massive surveillance programs that Snowden revealed to the world, it's how it captures a truly fascinating relationship between a whistleblower and the journalists he is entrusting. If you've grown jaded and think there are no true journalists left in the world, what's witnessed in Citizenfour will... Anne Hathaway's New Movie Sounds Like 'Bridesmaids' Versus Space Zombies Posted: 26 Aug 2015 09:00 PM PDT What happens when a monster-creating meteor crashes a baby shower? You get The Shower, starring Anne Hathaway. The wild genre-bending sci-fi comedy, now being produced by and starring Hathaway [via THR], sounds like the next evolution of the Bridesmaids phenomenon. It's follows a group of women at a baby shower who find themselves in the middle of a space-zombie attack when a meteor drops in their backyard and its debris turn all males into ferocious monsters. Cue: the women banding together and saving their town... and the world! It sounds nuts and really cool, and it's another sign that Bridesmaids -- along with films like Ghostbusters on the horizon -- are truly paving the way for some fun, exciting, female-driven ensemble movies. The Shower also sounds like... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
M. Night Shyamalan and Joaquin Phoenix to Chase Their 'Signs' Magic Again Posted: 26 Aug 2015 07:30 PM PDT It's not much of a leap to say that M. Night Shyamalan is at his best when he's telling small, contained stories. Give him a family, a farmhouse, and some lights in the sky and he can do some amazing things. Give him a huge budget and an anime to adapt, and, well, it doesn't turn out quite so well. That's why we're so excited for Shyamalan's next movie, The Visit, that sees him partnering with low-budget horror maestro Jason Blum. Not only does the trailer look plenty freaky, but early buzz on the movie is fairly strong as well. And apparently Blum and Shyamalan are both happy with the result, too, because they're already planning their next movie together. But wait! It gets better! Not only are Shyamalan and Blum making another low budget genre... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
This Million-Dollar 'Star Trek' Movie Is a Fan Film on Steroids Posted: 26 Aug 2015 06:00 PM PDT What's the definition of a fan film? Apparently anything involving copyrighted material produced by filmmakers at any cost whatsover, so long as they don't profit. They're not necessarily low-budget amateur works funded by fans' spare income anymore. Not in the age of crowdfunding. Today, a team can go on Kickstarter and Indiegogo and raise more than a million dollars for something that will wind up online, as free as those lesser-quality works. But the line between fan film and professional production is being blurred in the process. As profiled at The Wrap, a new fan-made project called Star Trek: Axanar has raised $1.13 million over multiple campaigns, and while they have neither the permission nor even the blessing of CBS/Paramount, the filmmakers behind the... Posted: 26 Aug 2015 04:00 PM PDT If you feel like horror movies are just going through the motions these days, you're going to want to press play on the first trailer for Baskin [via Bloody Disgusting]. There's just something about this Turkish slice of action/horror that feels angry and energized and aggressive in ways we don't really get from American horror movies. Our brand of terror tends to be about a family in trouble thanks to some ghosts or creepy kids in masks. Baskin doesn't care about that, though. It's about five cops who are called out to the middle of nowhere for a disturbance and end up crossing over to Hell. And we don't just mean hell in the lowercase h sense, where the cops just have a bad night dealing with some hooligans. Baskin looks to bring out Hell... See What James Spader Looked Like in His Wild Mo-Capped Ultron Suit Posted: 26 Aug 2015 03:00 PM PDT As Avengers: Age of Ultron gets ready to drop on digital HD and the Disney Movies Anywhere app on September 8, and then on DVD/Blu-ray October 2, we're starting to get some fun behind-the-scenes images and videos, like this showing us what James Spader looked like as Ultron. Well, we know what Ultron looked like, but this is what Spader actually looked like while performing as Ultron in a full motion-capture suit --complete with red dots high above his head meant to be Ultron's eyeline for those actors playing off him. In this case it's Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) who, in the video below, admit it was difficult to act opposite Spader because they couldn't look at him -- they had to look three feet above him. "It... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
