'Fear the Walking Dead' Had the Most-Watched Cable Premiere Ever Posted: Just like its parent program, "The Walking Dead," companion series "Fear the Walking Dead" slayed some ratings records during its Sunday night debut. The show snagged 10.1 million viewers for its series premiere, making it the most-watched premiere episode in cable history. That's a far cry from the numbers that the original show scared up in its October 31, 2010 debut -- "TWD" only managed 5.35 million viewers. ("Only" being a relative term in comparison to "Fear"'s new blockbuster numbers.) Of course, "TWD" has enjoyed enormous ratings success since then, breaking many records of its own. Its most recent season premiere scored 17.3 million viewers in the fall of 2014 -- a series high -- and its season finale rustled up another 15.8 million earlier this year. Whether "Fear" will ever reach those heights remains to be seen, but it's off to a great start. Its debut also broke a record in the key 18-49 demographic, notching 6.3 million viewers in that age group. According to Variety, "Fear" beat out previous demo champ (and fellow AMC show) "Better Call Saul," which nabbed 4.4 million 18-49-year-olds when it debuted earlier this year. "Saul" was also the previous holder of the "biggest cable debut" title, notching a comparatively-paltry 6.8 million viewers back in February before falling to "Fear" this weekend. "Fear the Walking Dead" has already been guaranteed a second season. With numbers like these, it seems like this show will be sticking around for quite a while longer. Amy Schumer Among First 'Late Show With Stephen Colbert' Guests Posted: The full guest list for the first week of "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" has been announced, and includes a bunch of big names, ranging from Hollywood royalty to music superstars -- and some quirkier choices that would have felt at home on "The Colbert Report," too. The first show, debuting on September 8, features previously-announced guests George Clooney and presidential candidate Jeb Bush, along with a musical performance from new "Late Show" bandleader Jon Batiste and his band, Stay Human. Some "special guests" are also slated to appear, though the show is keeping their names under wraps for now. On September 9, Scarlett Johansson will stop by, as will eccentric SpaceX and Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk. Kendrick Lamar will serve as the musical guest. September 10 will feature a sit-down with Uber CEO Travis Kalanick. Country star Toby Keith will perform. And on September 11, Colbert will chat with the red-hot Amy Schumer, along with horror legend Stephen King. (King is most likely appearing to promote the upcoming Hulu miniseries of his novel, "11/22/63," though we can't help but hope that he and Colbert will just nerd out together instead.) Troubled Waters is slated to serve as the night's musical guest. It looks like a pretty great lineup to us, and despite Colbert's pledge that he's ditched his conservative alter ego, we're hoping for some "Report"-esque antics with Bush, Musk, and Kalanick. "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" kicks off on September 8 on CBS. [via: TheWrap] Photo credit: Getty Images This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
The 'Full House' Cast Did Not Enjoy Lifetime's 'Unauthorized Full House Story' Posted: Like the "Saved by the Bell" cast before them, the former stars of "Full House" -- and upcoming revival series, "Fuller House" -- weren't too thrilled about Lifetime's biopic treatment, "The Unauthorized Full House Story," which premiered this weekend. Naturally, some of the cast members took to social media to air their grievances. Costar Andrea Barber, back as Kimmy Gibbler on "Fuller," also had a negative review, tweeting out a screencap of her character rolling her eyes. "Basically I'm going to be making this face all night," Barber quipped. Even "Full House" creator Jeff Franklin chimed in, directing some more specific critiques "Unauthorized"'s way, calling the flick "Not so good" and claiming it got some facts wrong about his relationship with star Bob Saget. "But at least they spelled our names right!" Franklin said of the movie's one redeeming quality. Surprisingly, John Stamos, whose Uncle Jesse is still as beloved today as he was in the show's late '80s/early '90s heyday, didn't have anything negative to say about "Unauthorized," despite his penchant for airing his grievances all over social media. Instead, Stamos decided to have mercy (sorry) and wished the actor playing him, Justin Gaston, well, throwing in a witty, Uncle Jesse-esque remark for good measure. "Hope you have as much fun being me as I do," Stamos told Gaston on Twitter. The 'Harry Potter' Guys, Ranked by Current Hotness Posted: The "Harry Potter" movies are the gift that keeps on giving. As we get older, we watch the movies for the sake of nostalgia, but we also love to marvel at how hot all the guys got. Thank you, "Harry Potter" for proving that everything is uphill after puberty. But, the real question is, which guy is the hottest of them all? To decide whose name we'd pull out of the Goblet of Fire, we used science, a little bit of magic, and our eyes. Here is our definitive ranking of the "Harry Potter" guys. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
James Franco Does His Best Walter White in the 'Making a Scene' Season 2 Trailer Posted: Have you ever wanted to see James Franco turn "Gossip Girl" into a Western or "Game of Thrones" as a sitcom? Well then, you're in luck. Franco is back and shaking things up with his second season of "Making a Scene," and it looks hilarious. Don't believe us, watch the clip and find out for yourself. 7 Things That Need to Happen in Ben Affleck's 'Batman' Movie Posted: Ben Affleck taking on the role of Batman was met with mixed reviews, but we're willing to give him a chance if we can also get all these other wishes fulfilled. 'Dancing With the Stars' Season 21: Bindi Irwin Is First Celebrity Contestant Posted: "Dancing With the Stars" is taking a different tactic with its casting announcements for the show's upcoming 21st season, revealing its slate of professional and celebrity dancers in small increments. First, we got a list of some of the pros who will hoof it on the series this fall; now, the first star has been announced. Bindi Irwin, the 17-year-old daughter of the late "Crocodile Hunter" star Steve Irwin, has nabbed one of the celeb spots. "Good Morning America" made the announcement Monday morning, and invited Irwin on the show to talk about her upcoming stint on the reality competition series. Irwin has continued the work of her father, telling "GMA" that she recently returned from a "crocodile research trip," and is much more comfortable with that rough and tumble lifestyle than with the glitz and glamour that await her on "DWTS." "This is completely different to anything I have ever done in my life," Irwin told "GMA." "I am used to wrangling crocodiles." And while the Australia native does have some dance experience that should help her on the show (she's a member of a dance troupe, and once starred in a kids' fitness dance video), she's still afraid of the judges' critiques (minus Len Goodman's, anyway). "I have to tell you though, the judges scare me more than crocodiles," Irwin told "GMA." Season 21 of "Dancing With the Stars" kicks off on September 14 on ABC. What's New on TV, Netflix Streaming, Digital, and DVD/Blu-ray This Week: August 24 - 30 Posted: At a loss for what to watch this week? From new DVDs and Blu-rays, to what's streaming on Netflix, we've got you covered. New Video on Demand, Rental Streaming, and Digital Only "Furious 7" The "Fast and Furious" team returns, and also says goodbye to star Paul Walker, in this action blockbuster. If you wait for the DVD/Blu-ray to come out on September 15, you can get all of these amazing bonus features. However, if you want to download the movie earlier, the Digital HD release date is August 25. Go for both? "The Age of Adaline" Blake Lively magically manages to stay 29 for decades, which apparently isn't the ideal existence, in this romantic drama co-starring Michiel Huisman, Harrison Ford, Kathy Baker and Ellen Burstyn. The movie isn't out on Blu-ray and DVD until September 8, but it's here on Digital HD on August 25. New on DVD and Blu-ray "The Walking Dead" Season 5 of AMC's flagship zombie show is out on August 25, just two days after the premiere of the companion series, "Fear the Walking Dead." The Season 5 release comes with multiple audio commentaries, deleted scenes, and these featurettes: Inside "The Walking Dead," The Making of "The Walking Dead," The Making of Alexandria, Beth's Journey, Bob's Journey, Noah's Journey, Tyreese's Journey, A Day in the Life of Michael Cudlitz, A Day in the Life of Josh McDermitt, and Rotters in the Flesh. "Citizenfour" The Oscar winner for Best Documentary Feature -- following Edward Snowden and the NSA scandal -- is out on DVD this week. Laura Poitras's powerful real-time doc takes viewers inside the world of global surveillance. "Aloha" Cameron Crowe's great cast (Bradley Cooper, Emma Stone, Rachel McAdams) could not save the dramedy from critical annihilation. But you can judge for yourself when the movie comes out on Blu-ray, including "The Untitled Hawaii Project: The Making of Aloha" documentary, a cast gag reel, an alternate ending, deleted scenes, and four featurettes. "Big Game" Samuel L. Jackson and Onni Tommila star in this action movie, alongside Ray Stevenson, Victor Garber, Ted Levine, Felicity Huffman and Jim Broadbent. A 13-year-old (Onni Tommila) in the countryside of Finland witnesses a spectacular crash, and discovers the escape pod from Air Force One, containing the President of the United States (Samuel L. Jackson). The unlikely pair struggle to escape the kidnappers hunting them while searching for the American Special Forces team sent to save them. New on Netflix "Narcos" This Netflix Original drama series premieres August 28, with 10 episodes following drug kingpin Pablo Escobar (Wagner Moura) and the Medellin Cartel. Watch DEA agent Steve Murphy (Boyd Holbrook, "Gone Girl") and his partner, Javier Peña (Pedro Pascal, "Game of Thrones") pursue some of the most dangerous drug lords in the world - including the infamous Pablo Escobar (Wagner Moura). "Revenge" The fourth and final season of ABC's "Revenge" heads to Netflix on August 28, a few days after the show's August 25 release on DVD. "Inspector Gadget" Penny, Brain, Chief Quimby, Dr. Claw and Inspector Gadget himself -- always on duty! -- will be back for Season 2 of Netflix's classic show reboot starting August 28. TV Worth Watching "Below Deck" (Tuesday on Bravo at 9 p.m.) Ahoy there, guilty pleasure lovers! Bravo's addictive reality show following the crew of a luxury yacht, returns August 25. Here's the synopsis for "More Foam, Bosun!": "Five new crew members join the cast in the Season 3 opener, which finds the gang preparing a luxury yacht for a fresh charter season in the Bahamas. Here, they plan an on-boat foam party despite a forecast of inclement weather." Full steam ahead into the drama! Speaking of drama, "Below Deck" starts right after "The Real Housewives of New York City," so you can just settle in for a drama marathon ... if you're into that kind of thing. "Masters of Sex" (Sunday on Showtime at 10 p.m.) Season 3 of Showtime's sexiest (and most educational) show continues with Episode 8, "Surrogates." This week, Johnson (Lizzy Caplan) jets away with Dan Logan (Josh Charles) and Masters (Michael Sheen) begins his surrogacy program. Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. 'Game of Thrones' Season 6: Is Myrcella Still Alive? New Photos Suggest Maybe Posted: One of the few deaths we were almost certain about in the "Game of Thrones" Season 5 finale was Myrcella But could Myrcella still be alive, having been saved somehow, and she'll appear in Season 6? Maybe. Nell Tiger Free (who plays Myrcella), Dean-Charles Chapman (Tommen Baratheon) and Isaac Hempstead Wright (Bran Stark) recently shared photos together, showing they were all in the same area. Were they just hanging out away from set with no one filming? Were the guys filming and Nell was just visiting the set? Are all three still filming, even if not together? Here are the Lannister/Baratheon siblings just a few days ago: And here are the on-screen siblings with Bran Stark: Plus, two weeks ago, Nell shared an Instagram photo about the waters of Spain, and Spain is one of the GoT locations. It could also just be a regular vacation location, or an old photo from last season that she's just sharing now. But you know. Hints. GoT Season 6 started filming in Belfast, Northern Ireland in July, but they shoot in multiple locations because the HBO show is just massive like that. Do you think Myrcella is still alive or are the photos just of friends hanging out off set? Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. 'Supernatural' Star Misha Collins Reportedly Mugged, Hides Injuries in Fan Photos Posted: Misha Collins showed "Supernatural" strength for his fans over the weekend after he was reportedly the victim of a mugging in Minneapolis.
It's awful to be victimized like this, but at least Misha has a supportive team of friends and fans behind him. Heal fast! Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
First 'The Walking Dead' Season 6 Premiere Sneak Peek Offers Clues to 'Puzzle' Posted: Time for an undead road trip! An amazing trailer for "The Walking Dead" Season 6 debuted at Comic-Con, but last night -- just before the start of "Fear the Walking Dead" -- a sneak peek from the main zombie show's next episode aired on the "Talking Dead Season 6 Preview Special." This 45-second clip is our first glimpse at the supersized 90-minute TWD Season 6 premiere, which arrives Sunday, October 11 at 9 p.m. ET. As you can see, out of context, it does not tell us too much. That's by design, since showrunner Scott M. Gimple and his questionable new facial hair said they purposely chose a clip that wouldn't give away many spoilers. But he told fans to watch the premiere closely because they'd be giving us clues to the whole season. He called it a "puzzle," and we accept the challenge, starting with this scene of Sasha (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Abraham (Michael Cudlitz) in a car. Sasha, last seen almost killing Father Gabriel (a thought that tempts us all) in the Season 5 finale, is seen driving around 70 mph. (Should we stop and wonder how they still have plenty of gas?) Abraham asks if she's good, and she says yeah. He doesn't seem convinced, and she asks, "If you were so worried, why the hell did you get into the car with me?" Seriously, especially when she's driving. Then Sasha offers the most interesting hint as to what's happening: "Doing something as big as this, that's living." They look at each other, then Sasha says, "There it is." As big as this. There it is. They are clearly on some kind of mission, possibly for a supply run, but they are not the usual supply runners -- she's a lookout in the Alexandria watch tower (when she's not burying herself with walkers) and he's on the construction crew -- so what are they doing and how is it "big"? Here's the scene: During the "Talking Dead" special, Scott Gimple said the Season 6 premiere would include more walkers than ever. He also compared Episode 601 to the Season 4 premiere and Season 5 premiere mashed together, in that Episode 401 (Farmer Rick, sick Patrick) basically functioned as an intro episode setting the stage for later action and Episode 501 (Terminus badassery) was non-stop action, and this Season 6 starter will apparently combine both. Do you have a theory on what Abraham and Sasha are doing in this car, and where this scene will air in the 90-minute episode? Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. The 'One Tree Hill' Cast Just Had an Epic Reunion in Montreal Posted: The "One Tree Hill" cast reunited over the weekend, and it was perfect. Bar photos, elevator selfies, awkward family photos, even a bed shot with wine -- they put their hearts into their time up in Montreal and shared the results on social media for fans. Not everyone could make the reunion (Chad Michael Murray, James Lafferty and Hilarie Burton were missed) but here are shots of Sophia Bush, Daphne Zuniga, Bethany Joy Lenz, Stephen Colletti, Antwon Tanner, Paul Johansson, Torrey DeVitto and company: Awww. What a fun weekend. Doesn't it make you want to watch the whole series all over again? OTH ran for nine seasons and 187 episodes, from 2003 to 2012. It hasn't been off the air for that long, but fans miss the show and the actors obviously missed each other. Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. 'Captain America: Civil War' Wraps, Jeremy Renner Confirms Hawkeye's Side Posted: The war is over! But who won? "Captain America: Civil War" finished main unit filming right around the same time as the "X-Men: Apocalypse" cast, which makes sense since both movies are coming out in May 2016. Check out some of the wrap photos below, including the captain himself, Chris Evans. But first -- let's hear from Jeremy Renner on which side Hawkeye will be on in the Iron Man vs. Captain America face-off. Jeremy was at Wizard World Comic Con Chicago and may have been tricked into confirming he's Team Cap. An audience member asked how he felt about siding with the First Avenger. "I don't know; they wrote me in that side. It made sense to me." But then he joked, "Maybe I switched sides!" Not a huge shock, but it sounds like confirmation that Hawkeye is standing with Captain America. Are you ready for spoilers on the rest of the team breakdowns? These have not been confirmed, but according to Heroic Hollywood... We'll see the teams battle next year (and we'll get hints when trailers start to come out). But now, onto the wrap party in Leipzig, Germany:
And here's a note from Marvel co-president Louis D'Esposito, praising directors Joe and Anthony Russo on a job well done (we hope): "Captain America: Civil War" will be released May 6, 2016. 'X-Men Apocalypse' Filming Ends, See Awesome Wrap Party Photos Posted: Pour yourself a Mystique and toast the end of the "Apocalypse" by scrolling through these great "X-Men" cast photos from the wrap party. After this, director Bryan Singer may be done sharing "X-Men: Apocalypse" set shots, since the principal actors are probably heading home or off to their next gigs. On August 22, Bryan shared the first pic below on Instagram, announcing, "That's a wrap on main unit. But still more to shoot over the next few weeks with second unit. But now...the wrap party!" He then shared a few photos with stars James McAvoy, Ben Hardy, Josh Helman, Olivia Munn, and Alexandra Shipp -- and Olivia and Alexandra shared a few fun photos of their own, with each other and one with Sophie Turner. Plus, there's an awesome "X-Men" drink menu we should all memorize and use to impress others. Cheers! "X-Men: Apocalypse" will be released in theaters on May 27, 2016. Want more stuff like this? Why 'Straight Outta Compton,' Universal Can't Be Beat at the Box Office Posted: Nothing can stop "Straight Outta Compton." The N.W.A. biopic smashed expectations last weekend with its $60.2 million debut, and it showed little sign of slowing down this weekend, when it remained on top with an estimated $26.8 million and a ten-day total of $111.5 million. The movie wasn't hurt by any of the obstacles it faced this week, including the premieres of three new wide releases and several days of bad press over "Compton"'s airbrushing of N.W.A. co-founder Dr. Dre's history of abusive behavior toward women. Despite all that, the combined total earned by this week's three newcomers added up to less than what "Compton" earned in its second weekend. "Sinister 2" opened in third place (behind four-week-old "Mission: Impossible: Rogue Nation") with an estimated $10.6 million. "Hitman: Agent 47" came in fourth with an estimated $8.2 million. And "American Ultra" opened at No. 6 with an estimated $5.5 million. Each of these movies opened well below already modest predictions. All probably would have done better if they hadn't been competing against "Compton." Still, their failure to draw ticket buyers speaks to some larger lessons -- six, in fact -- about this summer's box office: 1. Late August is Usually a Box Office Dead Zone It was hard to look at this weekend's line-up of new releases and not see it as summer's last whimper, the last chance for films studios didn't really expect much from. Certainly, no one opens a movie near the end of August and expects it to make the kind of money that of a May or June release. In recent years, Labor Day weekend has been an "okay" time to release horror movies -- only because there's usually so little to choose from that undemanding horror fans will jump at the chance to see anything scary. But that may no longer be true, since... 2. Horror Is No Longer a Guaranteed Moneymaker "Sinister 2" is the latest production from Jason Blum, the producer who's made a mint from very-low-budget horror in recent years, with successes like "Paranormal Activity" and "Insidious" franchises. The "Sinister" sequel is an attempt to turn the 2012 hit into a similar franchise. But that film, at least, had Ethan Hawke as the star; this one had the, um, less prestigious Shannyn Sossamon. Who knows, the movie cost so little to make that Blum will probably make a profit anyway, but even he seems to see the writing on the wall, having diversified over the past year into non-horror fare, including the art-house drama "Whiplash" (which won co-star J.K. Simmons an Oscar) and this month's thriller "The Gift" (which finished seventh this weekend with an estimated $4.3 million, for a three-week total of $31.1 million. A nice return for a movie that only cost $5 million). 3. Stop Making Remakes No One Really Wants We're looking at you, "Hitman: Agent 47." This is the second time time Fox has tried to make this movie series happen; like "fetch," it ain't gonna happen. The 2007 "Hitman" made just $39.7 million in the U.S., but it made another $60.3 million overseas, for a worldwide total just a hair shy of $100 million. Apparently, that was enough to justify a return to the video game property eight years later. Audiences may have short memories, but they have even tighter wallets -- especially when the same movie they turned down once before gets waved in their faces a second time. 4. Kristen Stewart Is Not a Box Office Draw... ...Except as Bella Swan or Snow White. Kudos to the actress for having quirky indie taste and for reuniting with Jesse Eisenberg, her co-star in the underrated indie "Adventureland," for the new "American Ultra." Indeed, it's admirable that she's happy to work outside of the realm of would-be blockbusters, especially since the rewards haven't been that lucrative. In the last 11 years, no movie she's starred in (except, of course, for the four "Twilight" films and "Snow White and the Huntsman") has cracked $20 million over its entire domestic run, and seven of her films have earned just $1 million or less. So if the filmmakers thought that they'd draw her female Twihard fanbase to "American Ultra" -- a stoner action comedy that is pretty much Eisenberg's movie -- just because they cast Stewart as Eisenberg's love interest, then they were sadly mistaken. 5. Not All Bad Press Is Bad Last week's smash "Compton" opening brought out of the woodwork a number of women from Dre's past who noted both his history of violent behavior and the fact that the new movie lionizing Dre almost completely ignored that history. By the end of the week, Dre was forced to apologize "to the women I've hurt," and Apple (which paid Dre billions to absorb his Beats empire and make him an Apple Music executive) issued a statement insisting that Dre was a changed man since his N.W.A.days. None of this bad buzz seemed to affect the movie's audience, which last weekend was evenly divided between men and women and between viewers over and under 30. After all, who's going to stay home from a movie because of the story it doesn't tell? Nonetheless, it's never safe to alienate half your potential audience because... 6. One Quadrant Isn't Enough Anymore That is, the studios need to stop trying to attract young adult males to the exclusion of everyone else, including young women and older men and women. Look at what's been this summer's big success story -- indeed, 2015's big success story -- which is Universal's domination of the marketplace with hits that have earned more than $2 billion since January 1. Not one of these is a comic book movie. Some, like "Jurassic World," are targeted at everybody with a pulse. Some are aimed specifically at women, older and younger ("Fifty Shades of Grey," "Trainwreck" "Pitch Perfect 2"), some at older men and women ("Unbroken," which made most of its money in 2015)," and some at younger, ethnically diverse audiences ("Compton," "Furious 7"). The only movie on the studio's slate that went primarily after young men, "Ted 2," was a flop. And yet, every studio still thinks young men are the demographic to chase. That's why they put out "Agent 47" and "American Ultra," even when "Compton" and "Mission: Impossible" are still strong enough to steal their audiences. At least "Sinister 2" tried to grab older viewers as well as younger women, who are usually horror's primary audience. And that movie was released by Focus/Gramercy, which is a subdivision of... Universal. So again, the question arises: Why is no one but Universal pursuing more than one quadrant? Hollywood may want to find the answer soon, especially if they want Universal's billion dollar-sized coffers. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
