Posted: 04 Nov 2015 10:00 PM PST

Here are a bunch of little bites to satisfy your hunger for movie culture:   Supercut of the Day: In honor of SPECTRE opening in the U.S. this weekend, here's a compilation of every James Bond movie gadget. It takes more than 16 minutes to get through them all.   Movie Takedown of the Day: Think Casino Royale is the best James Bond movie? Well, here's everything wrong with it:   Cosplay of the Day: Ewok babies are no longer the most adorable thing in the Star Wars Galaxy thanks to this corgi Stormtrooper (via Fashionably Geek):   Fan-Made Poster of the Day: Oscar Isaac's Poe Dameron didn't get a Star Wars: The Force Awakens character poster today, so Vanity Fair's Joanna Robinson made one for him, with some...

DVD Obscura: The New Indie and International Movies You Need to Watch

Posted: 04 Nov 2015 08:30 PM PST

New Indie: One of my favorite films from last year’s Venice Film Festival came and went from U.S theaters earlier in 2015, so it’s a perfect time to catch up with Manglehorn (IFC Films), which features one of Al Pacino’s finest, subtlest latter-day performances. He stars in the title role as a lonely and embittered locksmith who’s constantly writing letters to a lost love while ignoring the possibility of real-life closeness with his estranged son (played by Chris Messina) and a smitten bank teller (Holly Hunter). Directed by the hard-to-pin-down David Gordon Green — whose work ranges from the delicate George Washington to the bawdy Pineapple Express – Manglehorn has a low-key quality that bleeds into the lead performance; Pacino isn’t...

'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo' Is (Sort of) Being Rebooted, Here's What We Know

Posted: 04 Nov 2015 07:00 PM PST

Are you a fan of Steig Larsson's Lisbeth Salander books and have been anxiously awaiting another movie? You're in luck! Are you a fan of David Fincher's 2011 adaptation The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and have been anxiously awaiting a sequel? You're not quite as fortunate. Here's what we know about the franchise moving forward: So we're finally getting another movie in the Millennium series? Yes, but it's not the second installment, The Girl Who Plays With Fire. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony is making a movie based on the recently published fourth book, The Girl in the Spider's Web, which was not written by Larsson (he died in 2004).  Is Rooney Mara returning as hacker heroine Lisbeth Salander?  No...

The One Reason Why You Have to See 'The Peanuts Movie'

Posted: 04 Nov 2015 05:30 PM PST

If it hasn't happened to you yet, there will come a time in your life when the following words will begrudgingly spill out of your mouth: "They don't make 'em like they used to!" These were the words that immediately came to my mind after watching The Peanuts Movie, a charming, sincere throwback to a different kind of animated movie that doesn't really exist anymore. There's no clever wink-winks at the audience or a smattering of jokes that soar over a child's head because they're meant to reel in adults. You won't find yourself a slobbering mess as the credits roll, and it's probably not deep or complex enough to warrant multiple Oscar nominations (though don't be surprised if its original song, "Better When I'm...

You Gotta Watch This New Trailer for Spike Lee's 'Chi-Raq'

Posted: 04 Nov 2015 04:00 PM PST

Spike Lee is back with a new film this December, and its first trailer might be one of the most striking you watch all week. Not unlike Beasts of No Nation, which was Netflix's first theatrical release this month (it debuted in limited theaters at the same time it was available for streaming on Netflix), Chi-Raq is coming to us from Amazon Studiios -- via a partnership with Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions -- that will allow the film to be available both in limited theaters and through streaming on Amazon Instant Video. Watch the trailer below. Based on the Greek play Lysistrata, the film revolves around a scenario in which the women of Chicago band together to withhold sexual activity from their men until they can bring an end to the violence plaguing the city. Samuel...

Surprise! New 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Posters Show Off Leia, Han Solo, Kylo Ren and More

Posted: 04 Nov 2015 03:21 PM PST

The Star Wars: The Force Awakens poster that hit online before the most recent trailer was reportedly the final poster for the movie. Apparently the word final comes with a bit of an asterisk, because while that may be the final poster for the movie as a whole, that's not stopping us from getting some individual character posters. Check 'em out:   Follow @PeterSHall !function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js";fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,"script","twitter-wjs");Follow @MoviesDotCom !function(d,s,id){var...

'The Crow' Is Back On

Posted: 04 Nov 2015 02:00 PM PST

A new version of The Crow under the direction of Corin Hardy is back on the production schedule of Relativity Media, according to The Wrap. The film had been placed on hold a few months ago, due to the studio's financial and legal troubles, but now it looks to be the first project on the docket as the studio emerges from its bankruptcy, with the start of production marked for March 2016. Hardy has been attached to direct since December 2014, shortly before his horror movie The Hallow debuted to critical acclaim at the Sundance Film Festival. The 1994 original, based on James O'Barr's comic book series, starred Brandon Lee as a musician who comes back from the dead to avenge his own murder and that of his fiancee. Tragically, Lee died due to an accidental shooting...

'Harry Potter' Prequel 'Fantastic Beasts' Reveals First Fantastic Images

Posted: 04 Nov 2015 12:30 PM PST

It's quietly the most anticipated upcoming prequel series, and we say "quietly" because so far we haven't seen much from J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter prequel, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.  That is... until now. Warner Bros. has released the title treatment (see above) and first images from next year's film, due out November 18, 2016 and based on Rowling's 2001 encyclopedia beastanica), and they show a dashing Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander, a world-famous magizoologist. The first Fantastic Beasts (ah yes, this will indeed launch a new franchise) will track Scamander's beastly adventures in 1920s New York. In addition to Redmayne as Scamender, the above image also introduces Katherine Waterston as Porpentina...

Posted: 04 Nov 2015 11:00 AM PST

Mute: Paul Rudd (Ant-Man, above) and Alexander Skarsgard (TV's True Blood) will star in Mute, a new science-fiction movie from director Duncan Jones (Moon, Warcraft). Set in Berlin, 40 years in the future when the city has become "a science fiction Casablanca" teaming with immigrants, the story revolves around a mute bartender (Skarsgard) whose search for a missing loved one involves "an odd pair of American surgeons," led by Rudd. The movie is aiming to start production in March 2016.   Felt: Liam Neeson will star as a special agent who becomes an informant in Felt, written and to be directed by Peter Landesman (Concussion).
