Today in Movie Culture: Miles Morales 'Spider-Man' Movie, Tom Hardy as Wolverine and More

Posted: 12 Nov 2015 11:00 PM PST

Here are a bunch of little bites to satisfy your hunger for movie culture:   Fan Film of the Day: Marvel and/or Sony may never make a Miles Morales Spider-Man movie, but here's a pretty decent fan-made short for the character (via Geek Tyrant):   Dream Casting of the Day: Since it's already been suggested by Hugh Jackman himself that Tom Hardy should take over the role of Wolverine, here's a fan rendering of what that might look like (via Live for Films):   Supercut of the Day: The future looks bright in this supercut of movies set in years to centuries from now (via Geek Tyrant):   Scene Re-creation of the Day: We previously saw an image of Jamie Lee Curtis redoing her mother's iconic shower scene from Psycho for...

Watch: A Skateboarder Fight For His Life In Rad Short Film From a WETA Digital VFX Artist

Posted: 12 Nov 2015 09:30 PM PST

Even though they're called short films, in this day-and-age of constant distraction most people still don't have the time to dedicate to watching short films. That's a bummer because shorts are how a lot of very talented but unproven writers and directors make a name for themselves. But hey, we get it: life is fleeting and you've only got so much time. That ticking clock aspect is actually part of what makes Trick Meter so cool. We don't even want to say what the short itself is about - it is only 4-minutes long, so it won't take long to discover what's going on - but we can promise that it's worth it. We will say that this short is extra impressive for three simple reasons. 1. It has no dialogue, but you still understand exactly what's going...

'Star Wars: The Force Awakens': Meet Supreme Leader Snoke and Maz Kanata

Posted: 12 Nov 2015 08:00 PM PST

There is a lot of secrecy behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens, enough that it was just revealed the movie won't be screening early for any end-of-year awards consideration (don't worry, it could still be an Oscar contender). Disney is keeping the mystery box tightly shut until the December 18 release date, which is now just five weeks away. Still, we keep seeing more footage and images and we keep getting more information on plot and characters, some of it not even in the form of rumors and speculation. Today, we can share a little of each of these things, including details on two characters we haven't seen much of -- if anything at all.   Who is Supreme Leader Snoke?  Supreme Leader Snoke is a new villain played via performance-capture by that...

The 'Fifty Shades of Grey' Sequels Will Film Back to Back With New Director

Posted: 12 Nov 2015 06:30 PM PST

Fifty Shades of Grey was a legitamite phenomenon when it hit theaters earlier this year. We're not talking about just the United States, either. The sexy drama pulled in over $570 million around the globe, drawing in big crowds pretty much every where it turned up. Just for comparison's sake, that's more money than Ant-Man made around the world. Naturally sequel talk was well under way (it helps that there are already more books in the series to adapt), but it hit a bit of a snag since director Sam Taylor-Johnson and screenwriter Kelley Marcel announced they wouldn't be returning for Fifty Shades Darker. We already knew Niall Leonard, husband of Fifty Shades author E L James, was going to write the new movies, but now The Wrap tells us who will be taking over the...

See the Cast of 'Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory' Reunited For Some Bubble-bursting Truth

Posted: 12 Nov 2015 04:30 PM PST

This year marked the 10th anniversary of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Tim Burton's take on the classic Raold Dahl children's book of the same name, but there wasn't much commemoration of the occasion. Meanwhile, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, the much earlier adaptation directed by Mel Stuart, is still so beloved that it's being celebrated this week for no real reason at all.  Except for yet another instance where we get to see what the kids look like today, all grown up. The five former child actors who played Golden Ticket winners Charlie Bucket, Veruca Salt, Violet Beauregarde, Mike Teevee and Augustus Gloop reunited over Halloween weekend, along with one of the Oompa Loompas, for Orlando's Spooky Empire horror...

Remember When... 'The Running Man' Foreshadowed 'The Hunger Games'?

Posted: 12 Nov 2015 03:00 PM PST

In a few days, audiences will flock to a movie about a dystopian future where people are hunted and killed on live television for the nation's amusement. (We're talking about The Hunger Games, by the way, not Love the Coopers.) The same thing happened this week in 1987 -- only then, the movie was The Running Man, and the righteous hero who tried to destroy the game from the inside was Arnold Schwarzenegger.    The Running Man actually has several details in common with The Hunger Games. Both are based on novels about oppressive future governments. Both begin with a text crawl that spells out the premise, including the title of the TV show (which is also the name of the movie). Both have...

Movie News: 'Doctor Strange' Casts Another Great Actress; 'Alien: Paradise Lost' Gets a James Bond Writer

Posted: 12 Nov 2015 12:00 PM PST

Doctor Strange: The latest great casting addition for Marvel's big-screen take on the Sorceror Supreme is Amy Landecker, currently best known for her role on Amazon's award-winning series Transparent. While her part is unknown, she'll potentially get to reunite on screen with her A Serious Man star Michael Stuhlberg in the comic book adaptation, which is currently shooting and is due in theaters on November 4, 2016. [The Wrap]   Snowpiercer: Speaking of movies starring Tilda Swinton, Bong Joon Ho's cult favorite Snowpiercer will be turned into a TV series by writer Josh Friedman, who previously brought The Terminator to the small screen via The Sarah Connor Chronicles. The post-apocalyptic sci-fi movie was itself adapted from a French graphic...
