ABC Announces 2016 Midseason Schedule, TGIT Spring Premiere Dates Posted: Like Fox before it, ABC has now unveiled its lineup for the 2016 midseason, and also like Fox, there are plenty of changes afoot for the Alphabet. 'Fast and Furious' Spinoffs and Prequels Are in the Works Posted: Following the jaw-dropping, chart-topping, global success of "Furious 7," Universal is considering a Disney/Marvel-style treatment for that franchise, with discussions of possible spinoff and prequel films currently taking place. In a new report from Variety, star Vin Diesel explains that even after the planned 10-film series comes to a close, there's still plenty of potential for more stories to be told in the "Fast and Furious" world. "We've written out story lines for various characters," Diesel told the trade. "We've been playing with it for a long time. It's a very rich property and we're committed to treating it with a lot of class." Universal Pictures Chairman Donna Langley confirmed that plan, telling Variety that the studio wanted to "broaden the series' reach." "We're certainly in conversations about how we can expand the franchise now," Langley said. "It's an ensemble cast and there's room to bring characters in and out." Universal will have plenty of time to plan for the next phase of the "Fast" brand, though, since the studio is still committed to the recently-announced new trilogy of films that will bring the total of "Fast" flicks to 10. But according to one studio exec, the original series may not stop there, either. "Vin has a vision in his mind for three more, so let's get three more done and then see where we are from there," said Jeff Shell, chairman of Universal Filmed Entertainment Group, in an interview with Variety. "Everything has an end, so I don't think our expectation is we're going to have a hundred of them...To me 'Fast and Furious' has become no different than a beloved series that comes on every year. " Only time will tell if fans will keep revving up for more "Fast" flicks, but it seems Universal is going to send them out to the races for the foreseeable future no matter what. "Fast and Furious 8," directed by F. Gary Gray, is due in theaters on April 14, 2017. Expect more where that came from. 'NCIS' Star Pauley Perrette's Alleged Attacker Faces Felony Charges Posted: Last week, "NCIS" star Pauley Perrette recounted the harrowing story of an alleged attack she said she suffered at the hands of a "psychotic homeless man." Now, that alleged assailant is facing some serious felony charges -- and jail time -- in connection with that incident. TMZ reports that local authorities have arrested 45-year-old David Merck, and charged him with one count of making a criminal threat, and one count of false imprisonment by violence. Both charges are felonies. Merck allegedly assaulted Perrette late Thursday night near a home she owns in Hollywood, an incident Perrette then recounted in a post on Twitter. The actress said that Merck -- who identified himself as "William" -- punched her repeatedly and told her he would kill her; she was able to flee, and authorities later tracked down Merck based on a sketch that Perrette said she made of her assailant. "I almost died," wrote a shaken Perrette of the incident. Merck is currently being held on $60,000 bail. He faces up to four years in prison if convicted. 'Prometheus' Sequel Gets Another New Title, Release Date Posted: More than five years after the flick first hit theaters, the "Prometheus" sequel is officially a go, and has a new name (yes, another one), a release date, a logo (seen above), and an official synopsis. Fox revealed the big news this week, announcing that the flick would now be called "Alien: Covenant," and would have a direct link to director Ridley Scott's 1979 "Alien" film. While that second part is nothing new -- Scott said as much earlier this year -- the new name is a bit odd, since Scott had also previously said that the film would be called "Alien: Paradise Lost," in an homage to the poem by John Milton. Whatever the cause for the change, it's good news for fans either way. Here's the synopsis that Fox unveiled: "Alien: Covenant" is due in theaters on October 6, 2017. Charlie Sheen to Announce He's HIV-Positive: Report Posted: Charlie Sheen is reportedly about to make a major announcement: He's HIV-positive. News of Sheen's alleged status has been reported by several gossip outlets, following a blind item that first appeared in UK tabloid The Sun. According to that publication, an actor described as "womanizing" and "A-list" has been living with HIV for years, but has kept his diagnosis a secret from everyone -- including dozens of sexual partners who may have been infected. "His lawyers are believed to be aware of the situation and preparing for a raft of potential legal claims from previous lovers," The Sun's report said. "The actor's list of exes includes an award-winning actress, a religious movie star, a top Hollywood personality with a controversial past, a TV star, a media personality and a glamour model." Though the tabloid didn't name any names, it didn't take long for several sites to suggest Sheen, and according to TMZ, the actor is now prepared to come clean publicly, and will reveal his diagnosis during an appearance on the "Today" show on Tuesday. TMZ reports that Sheen will sit down with Matt Lauer for what the program has called "a revealing personal announcement." Sheen's camp has stayed silent about the reports, though Gawker says his "Today" appearance is set to head off an upcoming story from The National Enquirer that was to uncover his diagnosis. We'll see what the actor has to say for himself -- and all the people he's potentially allegedly infected -- tomorrow morning. Read Bindi Irwin's Sweet Tribute to Her Father on Steve Irwin Day Posted: Steve Irwin, aka "The Crocodile Hunter," died in 2006 at age 44, when his daughter Bindi Irwin was just 8. Now Bindi is 17 and the frontrunner to win the Fall 2015 "Dancing With the Stars" Season 21. Bindi, a wildlife conservationist like her parents, has been honoring her beloved father throughout the DWTS season. But yesterday -- November 15 -- was actually Steve Irwin Day in Australia, so Bindi and her pro partner Derek Hough both took to Instagram to honor the Aussie legend. Here's what Bindi posted: Here's what Derek posted:
Tonight (11/16), Bindi and Derek have three dances for the Season 21 Semifinals. That's one more dance than expected, but when Tamar Braxton dropped out for health reasons, DWTS had to compensate for already being down to four couples. The Fall 2015 Mirror Ball champions will be named next Tuesday, November 24 in the finale. Do you think Team Crikey has this thing locked up? Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. The Force Is Strong With 2.5-Year-Old Girl Singing 'Imperial March' in Her Crib Posted: Yes, The Force is strong with this little Star Wars fan, but which side is she on? This is how it starts. The Empire trains them young, feeds them propaganda, and gets them to sing "The Imperial March" even when they should be sleeping. Keep an eye on this little girl -- along with the rest of the world, which has seen her crib video more than 2,377,900 times on YouTube. User Jonathan H. Liu posted the video back on November 6 and it has gone viral, with "Star Wars" fans approving of this particular lullaby. As Liu wrote, "We watched Star Wars with our kids recently, and our toddler (2 and a half) really enjoyed the bits she saw before her bedtime. One of her favorite parts: the Imperial March. Here she is singing it to herself in her crib (as seen through the baby monitor)." Question: Twenty years from now, will she be proud or embarrassed to have this video online? Probably proud, since it shows she has good taste. Then again, it's not unusual for people, and animals, to mimic this particular tune. A few years ago, two birds also whistled "The Imperial March." Did John Williams foresee these events when he created that brilliant piece of music? And can children and animals also perform the "Cantina" theme? Do or do not, there is no try! Sorry, Christian Bale Just Shut Down That 'Batman v Superman' Theory Posted: But do we believe him? Eh. Probably. "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" is coming out March 25th, 2016, with Ben Affleck in the role of Batman/Bruce Wayne. However, one fan -- with superpowers of creativity, deduction, and perhaps delusion -- posted a very detailed theory online suggesting that Ben Affleck is not playing Bruce Wayne, he'll be Deathstroke, aka Slate Wilson. The fan goes a lot further, with other character fake-out suggestions, and shares "evidence" of it all. As Cosmic Book News broke it down, "So if Ben Affleck is playing Deathstroke, the theory goes that Christian Bale will be appearing at the end of Batman Vs. Superman (forming the Justice League?) and will appear in the Justice League Part 1 and Part 2 movies, with Affleck also appearing as Deathstoke in Suicide Squad." The idea is that "Man of Steel" and "Batman v Superman" continue Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy, with Christian Bale still being Batman. But this is all news to Christian Bale. While he was attempting to promote the premiere of his movie "The Big Short," Entertainment Tonight asked him about the fan theory. "I haven't heard that. This is the first I've heard of it. I think it's pretty clear that Ben [Affleck] is playing Batman now." ET added that, in case you thought he might just be skirting the issue to avoid spoilers, Bale added, "No, it's not happening." Oh well. It's still an interesting theory. Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
ABC's 'Wicked City' Is First Canceled Show of 2015-2016 Posted: Congrats, "Wicked City," you get the Fall 2015 booby prize! If you blinked, you missed "Wicked City," which ABC canceled after just three episodes. The sex-and-violence-heavy crime procedural -- starring Ed Westwick, Erika Christensen, Jeremy Sisto, Gabriel Luna, and Taissa Farmiga -- followed LAPD detectives searching for a pair of serial killers on the Sunset Strip in the early '80s. The pilot, which aired October 27, had a slow start with 3.28 million viewers and a 0.9/3 rating/share in the coveted 18-49 demographic. The next two episodes dropped in both overall viewers and in the ratings, with a 43 percent Week 3 dive to a 0.4 rating. That's really low. According to Deadline, production on the show will stop after they finish the now-filming Episode 8. (It was originally scheduled to be a 10-episode season.) Starting next Tuesday, November 17, the 10 p.m. timeslot will be filled with "Shark Tank" reruns. This marks the first official cancellation for a new show in the 2015-2016 TV season. Instead of outright canceling, most networks have just been cutting series orders for under-performing shows like "Blood & Oil" and "Minority Report," but keeping them on air until they play out their runs. The "Wicked City" producers originally hoped for an anthology format following a new case each season like "American Horror Story" and "True Detective." Are you sorry to see "Wicked City" go? Did you even know it was there? Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Paris Attacks: 'Supergirl' and 'NCIS: LA' Episodes Changed, 'SNL' Gets Serious Posted: The Friday, November 13 attacks in Paris are much more important than TV and film schedules, but they have prompted responses and changes from Hollywood's usual MO. CBS announced it's changing its Monday, November 16 lineup, switching out episodes of "Supergirl" and "NCIS: Los Angeles" that had bombing and terrorist themes so they don't air just three days after the real-life terror. According to Entertainment Weekly, CBS originally planned to air an episode of "Supergirl" called "How Does She Do It?" following "a series of bombings" that strike National City. That will be replaced tonight with a Thanksgiving-pegged episode called "Livewire." "NCIS: LA," which airs Mondays at 10 p.m., was set to air an episode with a young girl who was recruited into a terrorist organization. The new episode follows the search for a missing woman. (Maybe the takeaway is to realize terrorism and bombings and mass murders in general are not good fodder for entertainment programming. Just a thought.) "Saturday Night Live" skipped the usual cold open and just had a touching message from Cecily Strong, to say -- in French and English -- that their hearts were with the City of Light. Bill Maher, Stephen Colbert, and John Oliver also addressed the act of terror right away (with John dropping multiple f-bombs on his Sunday show). "Bridge of Spies" and "Jane Got a Gun" promo events were canceled, and the stars of "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2" -- which was filmed partly in Paris -- will not do any red carpet interviews. at the L.A. premiere. "Out of respect for the very recent events in Paris, we have decided to modify our red carpet and we will not conduct interviews at Monday's Mockingjay 2 premiere," a Lionsgate representative told EW and PEOPLE. "We will proceed with the rest of the event as planned in honor of the incredible fans who have always supported our films with such passion." That's just a selection of responses, and the late night TV hosts will most likely address the Paris attacks tonight on their respective shows. Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. 'The Walking Dead': Who Is Calling for Help? 'It's Not Glenn' Posted: Warning: Spoilers ahead from the Sunday, November 15, 2015 episode of "The Walking Dead." The very first thing we thought after hearing "Help" on the walkie talkie at the end of last night's "The Walking Dead" Season 6, Episode 6, was that it was Glenn Rhee's (Steven Yeun) voice, alive and ready to be saved. Daryl, Sasha, and Abraham all heard the call, but Norman Reedus (Daryl Dixon) told Entertainment Weekly, point blank, "I will say that voice is not Glenn." Well, that sucks. EW said people were wondering if it was Glenn, and you could see Glenn hope all over Twitter and as the majority guess on Talking Dead. Norman repeated, "It's not Glenn. But it's probably somebody at Alexandria with all we know that's happening there." Norman repeated the "It's not Glenn!" line to IGN, but added that we'll find out who is it "pretty quick." So who is speaking on the walkie? Ron, maybe? It didn't sound like Rick. Spencer? Aaron? A mystery person? Mikey, whom we haven't heard from since last season? Remember him? We met him when Carl met Ron and Enid. In the comic book, he's Nicholas's son. Hope that's not the case on TV, for multiple reasons. Anyway, it's probably not Mikey but the show shouldn't just forget him. And we haven't forgotten Glenn. Just because it's not his voice doesn't mean he's gone. We're still expecting/hoping to see him back in action in this upcoming Episode 7, "Heads Up," on November 22. Your turn. Whose voice is calling for "Help"? Want more stuff like this? 'GoldenEye': 20 Things You (Probably) Didn't Know About the James Bond Classic Posted: 20 years later, Pierce Brosnan's first Bond movie is still his best. After a six-year absence from the big screen, 007 returned with the very-90s, but very action-packed, "GoldenEye." Despite headlines in the press asking if the world needed James Bond anymore, audiences seemed to think it did -- they helped the film become a huge hit at the box office, spawning three more films for Brosnan and a popular Nintendo game. In honor of the film's 20th (?!) anniversary on November 17, here are 20 things you may not know about one of 007's most popular missions. 1. Legal issues prevented MGM from getting a new Bond movie out after the tepid reaction to 1989's "License to Kill," grounding 007 for six years -- the longest wait in-between films in the franchise's history. 2. In 1990, before the title and plot were locked down, producer Michael G. Wilson contributed a treatment and "Wiseguy" writer Alphonse Ruggerio was hired to flesh it out into a screenplay -- with Timothy Dalton intended to return as Bond. (He officially vacated the role in 1994.) That version of the story was reportedly titled "Property of a Lady", and it would have seen the Bond film series return to using Ian Fleming titles. While this story is hard to track down, word 'round the campfire is that it would have taken place in Hong Kong. 3. Brosnan was originally set to play Bond back in 1987, but contractual obligations to his NBC series, "Remington Steele," prevented that from happening. 4. Other actors considered to play Bond -- or rumored to be -- included Liam Neeson, Mel Gibson and Sam Neill. At one point, the press reported that Bond's gender was going to be swapped, and Sharon Stone was considered to play the role. 5. The first day of production was January 16, 1995, and it featured scenes between Bond and Robbie Coltrane's character, the Russian gangster Vladimir Zukovsky. 6. The villainous 006, Alec Trevelyan (Sean Bean, left), wasn't originally intended to be Bond's peer. He was scripted to be older and more like 007's mentor. The producers set their sights high in terms of casting, wanting Anthony Hopkins for the roll. When the Oscar-winner refused, the character was later re-written to be younger. ("GoldenEye's" director, Martin Campbell, would later work with Hopkins in "The Mask of Zorro.") 7. Speaking of Martin Campbell, this is the first Bond movie ever directed by a non-Brit. Campbell was born in New Zealand and he would also go on to direct Daniel Craig's first Bond adventure, "Casino Royale." 8. When Brosnan was first introduced to the press as Bond, he was sporting a very shaggy beard. Why? Because he was about to shoot 1997's "Robinson Crusoe." 9. "GoldenEye" was the first Bond movie ever released on DVD. 10. The film's title has ties to Bond author Ian Fleming's past. "GoldenEye" is the name of Fleming's Jamaican estate. It was also the codename for a special operation that Fleming participated in during his time with British Naval Intelligence. 11. This marks the first time computer graphics were used for the iconic opening gun barrel sequence (pictured). 12. Due to several plot parallels between this movie and 1994's "True Lies," the script for "GoldenEye" had to undergo some last-minute changes. 13. In one of the earliest drafts of the film from writer Michael France, dated January 1994, the film does not open with it's now-famous bungee jump sequence. Instead, Bond's riding a train through the French Countryside, and then he must go out on top of it. (This feels very similar to the end of "Mission: Impossible" and to a Diet Coke ad aping 007 that a pre-Bond Brosnan starred in.) 14. The film's final pre-title sequence occurs nine years before the rest of the plot's main action -- the longest time period ever covered on-screen in a Bond movie. This puts it between the Roger Moore and Timothy Dalton eras but 007 doesn't care about timelines and neither should you. 15. Other changes from script-to-screen include Bond breaking into the chemical weapons facility from the pre-titles sequence and taking out two guards while they are playing chess, and a slightly-different first meeting with M, where she implies that Bond's charms may have worked on her 10 years ago, sparking a relationship between the two. (The former is included as a deleted scene on the DVD.) 16. Tina Turner wasn't the first choice for singing the title song -- it was Ace of Base. The Swedish pop group, hot off their debut album (it sold more than 50 million copies), recorded a demo for "GoldenEye." But their record label pulled it and the song from the project, as the label was worried that the movie was going to be a flop and hurt the band's standing. The movie obviously didn't flop, and Base's song was eventually released as "The Juvenile" with slightly-altered lyrics. Click here to listen. 17. This movie marks the first on-screen appearance of MI6 Chief of Staff Bill Tanner since "For Your Eyes Only" in 1981. 18. You know that big satellite dish that Bond battles 006 on at the end of the film? It's the same dish that plays a role in the plot of 1997's "Contact." 19. At the time, the movie was the most successful Bond film since 1979's "Moonraker." The only thing more popular than the movie was the N64 game based on it. "GoldenEye 007" is considered one of the best shooters of all-time by gamers, and it sold 8 million copies. 20. "GoldenEye" was the last Bond movie overseen by the franchise's legendary producer, Albert "Cubby" Broccoli, and the first to be produced by his daughter and current co-keeper of the franchise, Barbara. Due to Cubby's poor health (he died seven months after the film's release), Barbara and Michael W. Wilson took on day-to-day producing duties and have continued to do so for each subsequent Bond picture. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

"The Hobbit Trilogy Extended Edition" Turns out, Peter Jackson did not stretch "The Hobbit" as far as it could go in the trilogy that hit theaters. "River" This six-part crime thriller, starring Stellan Skarsgård as brilliant but haunted police officer John River, recently debuted on BBC One in the U.K. Now all six episodes are coming exclusively to Netflix, starting November 18. TV Worth Watching"The Leftovers" (Sunday on HBO at 9 p.m.) Why aren't more people watching "The Leftovers"? Is it the microwave-ready title? The fact that it's from Damon Lindelof and people fear investing in another "Lost" mystery? "The Leftovers" is arguably the deepest, most profound, and thought-provoking show on the air right now -- with master class acting from Carrie Coon, Regina King, Christopher Eccleston, and Justin Theroux -- and it's worth of a binge to catch up. The November 22 episode -- the eighth hour in the 10-episode Season 2 -- is called "International Assassin." Try it! "The Amazing Race" (Friday on CBS at 8 p.m.) Can anyone beat The Green Team? Does anyone like The Green Team? Ultra-competitive Justin and Diana are crushing the 27th "Race" (while bickering with each other) and we'll have to see if they continue to dominate Leg 9, which takes the teams to India, on November 20. "The Bastard Executioner" (Tuesday on FX at 10 p.m.) The historical fiction drama from Kurt Sutter ("Sons of Anarchy") will end its first season on Tuesday, November 17. The Episode 10 finale, called "Blood and Quiescence / Crau a Chwsg" was written by Sutter and follows Wilkin and Milus leading an unlikely band of brothers on a life-threatening rescue mission. 13 Times Regina George Was the Best Part of 'Mean Girls' Posted: Regina George is the high school queen bee to end all queen bees. She's conniving, manipulative, gorgeous, and she has two fend purses and a Lexus. Who else could have huge holes in their tank top and turn it into a popular fashion trend? The endlessly entertaining former head of The Plastics, played to catty perfection by Rachel McAdams, is one of the reasons we love "Mean Girls" and quote it over and over and over. Here are 13 times Regina George was truly the best part of "Mean Girls." This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Box Office: Why This Weekend Was Full of Surprises Posted: This was the weekend that nothing went as expected at the box office -- hinting that the multiplex may be in for a wild ride this winter. Even though many predicted that none of this weekend's new releases were going to dislodge "Spectre" and "The Peanuts Movie" from the top two spots, those films still surprised. "Spectre" held on better than anyone thought, losing just 50 percent of last week's business instead of the 60 that many predicted, to finish with an estimated $35.4 million for the weekend. On the other hand, "Peanuts" was supposed to lose just 35 percent of last week's business, but it plunged 45 percent, to an estimated $24.2 million. It's possible that "Love the Coopers" ate into the "Peanuts" family audience. Instead of debuting at $6 or $7 million, it earned an estimated $8.4 million, good for third place. Despite its unclear title, the movie was well-marketed; viewers knew that it was a Christmas-themed family comedy, and as the first such film of the season, it had an advantage. An all-star cast (including Diane Keaton and John Goodman) didn't hurt. "The 33" premiered in fifth place, with $5.8 million -- less than the $10 million analysts pegged it to earn. Despite being based on the gripping true story of the successful rescue of the Chilean miners who were trapped below ground for 69 days in 2010, the movie had limited appeal. The title was weak, the marketing was nearly invisible, and the reviews were lackluster, which hurt among the older audience the film targeted. The waning star power of Antonio Banderas wasn't enough to overcome those liabilities. The weekend's biggest surprise? The Bollywood romantic epic "Prem Ratan Dhan Payo." The Hindi-language musical cracked the top ten, landing in eighth placed with an estimated $2.4 million. That take is all the more impressive considering that it's playing on just 286 screens, and that "Prem" is three hours long -- meaning fewer showings per day. Give credit to Salman Khan and Sonam Kapoor, two of India's biggest stars, as the romantic leads. Failing to crack the top 10, despite opening on 1,565 screens, was period football drama "My All American." It debuted in 12th place with just $1.4 million, meaning it earned just $889 per theater. The movie had a pedigree -- writer/director Angelo Pizzo is the screenwriter behind such tearjerking sports-drama classics as "Hoosiers" and "Rudy" -- but he's not a household name. And the movie opened while the similar "Woodlawn" is still doing decent business (it's earned $13.6 million over five weeks, including another estimated $635,000 this weekend).Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's much-anticipated marital drama "By the Sea" was a box office dud, to be expected considering it only premiered on 10 screens, earning an estimated $95,440, or $9,544 per screen. That seems like a good per-screen average -- "Spectre" earned $9,010 per screen this weekend -- but it pales in comparison to other recent art-house movies that opened with $20,000 or more in limited release. The movie's underwhelming reviews may have kept viewers away, and the numbers suggest that, even when the movie is playing nationwide, fascination with Brangelina won't be enough to draw audiences curious about whether the couple's on-screen turmoil sheds light on their off-screen relationship. Overall, the box office was down nearly 35 percent from last week's surge. Does that mean last week was a fluke, and that we're still in the midst of a deep slump? Not necessarily. Next weekend should spike again with the release of "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay -- Part 2." And 2015 is still on track to beat the yearly record set in 2013. But beyond sure things like "Mockingjay" and "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," how the rest of the year will play out is anybody's guess. 'Star Wars' Prequels Stars: Where Are They Now? Posted: While we wait in an anticipatory lather for "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" to open on December 18, our thoughts turn to the last time we got so excited for a new set of "Star Wars" movies. The year was 1999 and fans camped out for "The Phantom Menace" -- only to have their hopes dashed by the unwelcome comic relief of Jar Jar Binks. The other two prequels were marginally better, but the majority of fans agree, they can't hold a candle to the original trilogy. What has the cast of the prequels (and their special set of skills) been up to since then? Saving the world, winning an Oscar and singing their hearts out, for starters. But for young Jake Lloyd, it was a scarring experience that he would rather forget. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
