The New 'DC's Legends of Tomorrow' Trailer Is Going to Make You Very, Very Happy Posted: The wait is FINALLY over. The CW has released the first substantial footage from the upcoming, highly anticipated "DC's Legends of Tomorrow," and it packs a quite a wallop. The "first look" -- more like a trailer, really -- lays out the story clearly: Time-traveling rogue Rip Hunter (cool name, bro) travels back in time to assemble an elite group of heroes (and a couple of not-quite heroes) to stop an utterly bleak future. Witty one-liners, action-packed shenanigans, and some seriously cool crossover potential ensue. Among his recruits are Sara Lance (White Canary), Jay Jackson (Firestorm), Ray Palmer (The Atom), Hawkgirl, Captain Cold, and Heat Wave. With a lineup like that and coming from the network that brought us "Arrow" and "The Flash," "DC's Legends of Tomorrow" has serious potential to be your new favorite show. You can find out when "DC's Legends of Tomorrow" premieres January 21, 2016, on The CW. Watch the trailer. %Slideshow-285389% This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello's Wedding Was Gorgeous, of Course Posted: Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello tied the knot this weekend, and in news that should surprise no one, it was an absolutely gorgeous affair. The nuptials took place in Palm Beach, Florida on Sunday evening, and Vergara shared snaps of everything on her Instagram page, including the jaw-dropping floral arrangements (starring strands of orchids dripping from the ceiling), the romantic lighting, and the main event: the actress's stunning, custom, customizable wedding gown. According to People, the insanely beautiful bridal wear -- which featured a voluminous ballgown skirt that was detached for the reception -- came courtesy of Zuhair Murad Couture, and featured "a hand-embroidered bodice, contained 11 pounds of sequins and 6 pounds of pearls, and required 32 people to [work] around the clock to complete the design, which took a total of 1,657 hours." Yowza. All that attention to detail more than paid off, though, as Vergara and Manganiello were picture perfect for their big day. People reports that they were joined by famous pals including Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan-Tatum (who performed a "Magic Mike XXL"-inspired routine at the reception), as well as many of Vergara's "Modern Family" costars, including Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Eric Stonestreet, and Ty Burrell. Check out some photos of the ridiculously glamorous event below. Congrats to the newlyweds! Nickelodeon Is Making a New 'Hey Arnold!' Movie, May Bring Back More Classic Shows Posted: Everyone's favorite Football Head is making a comeback: Nickelodeon has revealed that it's set to make a new "Hey Arnold!" movie. Variety reports that the telepic will "feature a storyline that picks up where the original series ended and resolves unanswered plotlines–including the whereabouts of Arnold's parents, long missing from the program." There's no word yet on when the special is set to air, but according to network executives, there could be more classic shows coming back, too. Chris Viscardi, the co-creator of '90s Nick series "The Adventures of Pete & Pete," was recently named the network's new senior vice president of content development for franchise properties -- and that wordy position was created specifically to "mine the network's vast library of original series to develop new shows for modern audiences," per Variety. And while Viscardi says that reconnecting with Millennial viewers that are now grown is part of the appeal of potentially bringing back series such as "Ren and Stimpy" and "Rocko's Modern Life," Nickelodeon is mostly making these moves in an attempt to connect with its current audience. "You have to remember people who are going to watch really don't have a recollection of 'Hey Arnold!,'" said Russell Hicks, president of content development and production for Nick. "You have to make it relevant to them but also nod to the audience that is going to be interested." Based on the excitement over the announcement of The Splat, TeenNick's newly-launched programming block of classic Nick series, that interest should be exceedingly high. Viscardi told Variety that in addition to animated series, the network is eyeing some of its live-action shows like "Clarissa Explains It All" for revivals, as well as series it no longer owns, including "Doug." "We are very selective about the series, what we go back to, and think about how we can take them and make them special," Viscardi told the trade. "It's really important to us to be really consistent with the storytelling that was there long ago on the series but also work to reimagine it, even just a little bit, and make it appealing and thrilling for today's audience." That includes connecting directly with the creators of those shows, which was how Nick wound up with the "Hey Arnold!" revival: According to Variety, the network was meeting with creator Craig Bartlett about a different show and got to reminiscing about "Arnold." Now, Bartlett will write and produce the new movie. There's more where that came from, and Nick execs told Variety to expect additional announcements about new revivals in the months ahead. We can't wait. [via: Variety] %Slideshow-314092% This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Chris Hemsworth Reveals Dramatic Weight Loss for 'In the Heart of the Sea' Posted: Chris Hemsworth is all imposing muscle as Thor in the "Avengers" flicks, but for his newest role, as a ship crew member lost at sea in "In the Heart of the Sea," he decided to take his physique in the complete opposite direction. Hemsworth unveiled his dramatic weight loss in a photo posted on social media this weekend, looking almost unrecognizable with a thick, scraggly beard and long, tangled hair. But it was the visible rib bones and collar bones poking out of his too-skinny torso and chest that caused the most concern, as the actor looked less like the God of Thunder and more like Tom Hanks in "Castaway." Hemsworth added a cheeky caption to the shot, writing, "Just tried a new diet/training program called 'Lost At Sea'. Wouldn't recommend it."Earlier this year, Hemsworth revealed just how he achieved such a shocking transformation, telling Entertainment Tonight that he and his fellow castmates consumed as few as 500 calories a day for weeks at a time so they'd look convincing as stranded sailors. "We have to shoot the really skinny stuff where we drop down to 5, 6, 700 calories a day, a good three or four weeks and it's going to be pretty uncomfortable, but we'll be together in our misery," Hemsworth told ET back in July. "I spend more time thinking about food than anything else at the moment." It looks like mission accomplished. Now will someone go get this man a sandwich? Watch Hermione Take on Katniss in Epic 'Princess Rap Battle' Posted: No weapons, no magic, and -- technically -- no princesses. But this rap battle between Hermione Granger of "Harry Potter" and Katniss Everdeen of "The Hunger Games" is one for the books. Whitney Avalon does a series of Princess Rap Battles, and even though neither Hermione nor Katniss is a princess, they are royally badass in this video. Avalon takes on the role of Katniss, opposite "Castle" star Molly C. Quinn as Hermione. Here's a portion of Katniss's opening takedown: BURN Here's a small part of Hermione's response: Oh man. It gets better. Just watch. Now you get to decide who wins: Five points to Gryffindor or are the odds in Katniss's favor? Want more stuff like this? First 'Game of Thrones' Season 6 Poster Teases Return Date, Jon Snow Posted: Unlike Jon Snow, we now know something: The month "Game of Thrones" Season 6 will premiere! It's April. It's usually April, so no big shock, but there were whispers on Dragon Street that maybe the premiere would be pushed back in 2016, thanks to HBO's new show schedule. But no. It's April. And Jon Snow (Kit Harington) is back in focus, looking like the dead crow he is (or might be):
We were just wondering if a gingerbread homage to King's Landing could even get a smile from Jon Snow, and now here he is dominating the first official Season 6 tease. The Powers That Be have been insisting that Jon is indeed dead, but clearly he's not out of the picture or the first poster art wouldn't be all about him. Season 6 is just about done filming its 10 episodes, and hopefully we'll get to see the first footage from the new season fairly soon. Are you excited to see what happens next for Jon Snow, or tired of hearing speculation about what happens next for Jon Snow? Kit Harington must be counting the days until he can stop dancing around this subject. Want more stuff like this? The New 'Zootopia' Trailer Will Slooooowwwwly Make You Laugh Posted: Welcome to "Zootopia," a mammal melting pot version of Manhattan, complete with its own niche neighborhoods, crime sprees, and the slowest possible creatures running the DMV. Disney just released a new trailer for the animated comedy, which hits theaters this spring. In the clip, we see gung-hu Officer Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin of "Once Upon a Time") reluctantly partnering with scam-artist fox Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman) to crack a tough case. The new preview actually includes a full sneak peek scene, sending Hopps and Wilde to the DMV which is, of course, run by sloths. Not. That. There. Is. Anything. Wrong. With. That. Unless you're in a rush, of course. But you know you'd be at this DMV every day -- Kristen Bell! The first "Zootopia" teaser came out in June, with Jason Bateman explaining that, in the world of this Zootopia, humans never happened. It's a modern civilized world with anthropomorphic animals wearing clothes, using technology, and (sadly) acting just like us -- including "natural enemies" like rabbits and foxes not quite getting along. In addition to Goodwin and Bateman, "Zootopia" also features the voices of Shakira, Idris Elba, J.K. Simmons, Nate Torrence, Jenny Slate, and Tommy Chong. It's scheduled for release in theaters on March 4, 2016. Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. %Slideshow-316513% This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
'Walking Dead' Showrunner & Steven Yeun Explain Point of That Glenn Storyline Posted: He's aliiiiiiiive! It took "The Walking Dead" four episodes to give fans the answer to "Is Glenn Really Dead?" By the time Season 6, Episode 7, "Heads Up" aired on November 22, many viewers already knew Glenn would be back. Reaction online still seemed mostly relieved at Glenn's survival, but there were also some cynics who shook their heads at this "gimmick," which could cheapen any and all future "deaths." Steven Yeun, who had to play coy about his own character's fate for weeks, finally got to speak out on "Talking Dead," alongside showrunner Scott M. Gimple, who came up with this idea. Steven told "Talking Dead" host Chris Hardwick he felt "relieved," "very grateful," and "amazed at the response," admitting "it's kind of been overwhelming." He felt bad that he couldn't say anything to anyone about what happened. How did he feel about what happened, and the direction of Glenn's story? Steven took a heroic angle, saying, "It proves that this world still can take that story of the good guy winning sometimes. I really like the fact that it's not this bent of always seeking out something miserable on television ... but really accepting the fact that sometimes good guys survive." Scott Gimple further explained why they went with this Glenn death fake-out idea. "The story we were telling was one of uncertainty," he said. When people leave the walls of Alexandria, they don't have cell phones and you don't know what happens. "I think it was important to do a story this year about uncertainty and then the audience would share the uncertainty that the characters have." He wanted us to be on the same page as Glenn's "wife" Maggie (Lauren Cohan), who was shown in Episode 5 not being sure what happened to Glenn. Gimple didn't put it this way, but part of the reasoning had to be so fans wouldn't do what they usually do and blame the "stupid" characters for not having the same amount of knowledge as the audience. For once, we all had close to the same amount of intel, although we as audience mewrunner-and-steven-yeun-explain-point-glenn-storylinembers got to see the Dumpster scenes, back in Episode 3 and again in Episode 7, and Maggie did not. Chris Hardwick did most of the talking to defend the Glenn storyline, attempting to respond to critics of the fake-out while only sharing tweets and responses from people who were happy with the plot. Gimple said he loved the passionate reaction from fans. "I think it's wonderful. It is a dream come true to provide a collective experience, to provide something that was around when I was a kid. ... You could talk to a stranger about TV. ... There's been a lot of conversation about this and that's exciting. It makes the world just a little bit smaller." Steven Yeun echoed that, saying he liked the idea that they could have that shared experience together. "You realize in that moment that you have affected a lot of people at once, and that's something that you don't really see that often anymore." It is nice to bond with strangers on the Internet (not in a creepy way) but Gimple can't do anything like this again or he'll be The Showrunner Who Cried Wolf. Want more stuff like this? Even Jon Snow Might Smile at This Gingerbread Version of King's Landing Posted: Hodor! Winter is coming, but the holiday season is already here, and one creative fan honored the spirit of the season and HBO's "Game of Thrones" with an impressive gingerbread version of King's Landing. Check it out: Wow. You can almost see a little gingerbread Cersei Lannister being shamed as she walks through the gingerbread streets. The artist, a cake designer based in London named Michelle Wibowo, shared some of her own photos, giving just a glimpse of her process:
According to the Evening Standard, the King's Landing replica was the centerpiece of the three-day event, "The Taste of London: The Festive Edition," but -- they added -- fans also got a chance to sit on the Iron Throne while sampling a Wild Beer. Sounds like an event worthy of song. And since the gingerbread King\\'s Landing turned out so well, Wibowo should keep going and do all of Westeros, then make gingerbread dragons so Daenerys Targaryen can fly her way to the throne.Want more stuff like this? 'Wonder Woman' Starts Filming, Gal Gadot Shares Awesome First Photo Posted: She's on her way! Star Gal Gadot shared the first photo on Twitter, as Warner Bros. released more details on the cast. Here's the pic, and you can just make out London's Big Ben in the background: Epic! Gadot's Wonder Woman will first appear in "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" in March 2016. Her own movie, Warner Bros. revealed, is being filmed on location in the United Kingdom, France, and Italy; and the cast includes Chris Pine (as Captain Steve Trevor), Robin Wright, Danny Huston, David Thewlis, Ewen Bremner, Saïd Taghmaoui, Elena Anaya, and Lucy Davis. Jon Hamm, Emma Stone Lack The Force in SNL's 'Star Wars' Audition Tapes Posted: A wise little green Jedi Master once said, "Do or do not, there is no try," and these real and impersonated celebs do not make the cut for "Star Wars: Episode VII -- The Force Awakens." "The Force Awakens" opens in less than a month, and "Saturday Night Live" recruited real director J.J. Abrams to open this November 21 "Star Wars Auditions" bit. Abrams says, when it was announced that he was making a new movie, he knew he wanted to find the perfect next generation of heroes. So here's a look at never-before-seen footage from (fake) screen tests. The "auditions" include actual "Force Awakens" stars Daisy Ridley and John Boyega, plus the real Michael Bublé singing to Ridley during a chemistry test, Jon Hamm auditioning for "Hamm Solo," Emma Stone offering a cringe-worthy nod to her "Aloha" controversy by saying she can play "a very convincing half-Asian woman," and SNL cast members adding their impersonations of Shaquille O'Neal, George Lucas, Javier Bardem, Maggie Smith, John Mayer, Wynonna Judd, David Beckham, Chris Tucker, Danny DeVito, and Sofia Vergara. You may recall when "SNL" aired these lost "Star Wars" auditions: Brilliant. That one was better, but at least the 2015 version is timely and offers a Hamm & Bublé reunion. Want more stuff like this? Used to think it would be Nick Carter, but Bindi Fever has basically taken over. "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles" (Wednesday on The CW at 8 p.m.) This classic Thanksgiving comedy -- also a major heart-tugger -- is airing on The CW the day before T-Day. Steve Martin plays a high-strung advertising executive who is desperate to make it from New York to Chicago in time for Thanksgiving. John Candy plays the optimistic overly chatty salesman he meets along the way. Did you know this was written, produced, and directed by John Hughes? One of his greats. 'The Walking Dead' Season 6, Episode 7 Recap: Just Survive Somehow Posted: I'm a big enough person to admit when I'm wrong, and alas, I have to put one of my patented "Walking Dead" Conspiracy Theories to rest this week: Baby Judith has not, in fact, been kidnapped by the Wolves, and is alive and well (for now) in Alexandria. (Though considering how terrible Jessie is at keeping track of her own children, I question Carol's decision to choose her as a babysitter.) But, of course, that wasn't the only thing I was proven wrong about this week. It turns out that the show did away with its penchant to let plot lines dangle until the midseason finale, and finally revealed Glenn's fate to viewers in this, the penultimate episode before we go on hiatus. And yes, he's alive. No surprise there, thanks to showrunner Scott Gimple and his ridiculously stupid, unnecessarily ambiguous statement after Glenn's "death." It turns out that Nicholas's body did indeed fall on top of Glenn, and he shimmied out from under the innard buffet and scrambled under the dumpster to safety. Gimple's decision to toy with viewers was and remains questionable, especially since the fakeout only served to frustrate fans (not to mention suck all the drama out of his inevitable return), and really had no effect on anyone in Alexandria. (Remember, this season has taken place over the course of only a handful of days; Maggie may have been worried about her husband regardless of how much time has passed, but for his absence to truly have made an impact on the community at large – not to mention fans – he would have needed to be missing for a longer stretch in the world of the show to really drive home the dread.) Still, we haven't seen Glenn reunite with Maggie yet, and I suspect that that's something that we may not get before we sign off next week. I understand the urge to draw out this moment, since it's bound to be an emotional one. I just wish we didn't have to spend so much time watching Glenn interact with the wooden Enid at that payoff's expense. It made sense to have her be the first to find him, since she was the only one who ventured outside the gates in the chaos of the Wolves' attack, making it out before the walkers circled back toward the community. But man, what a tedious pairing. Putting aside my personal feelings about the circumstances surrounding the fakeout, I was glad to see Glenn again. And then he had to spend his grand return lecturing a sullen teenager about her fatalist attitude, and insist that he was taking her back to Alexandria for Maggie, since Ms. Greene would never have abandoned Enid herself. Um, what? Sorry, but Maggie is just as jaded as everyone else at this point (remember her defeated, sewage-soaked conversation with Aaron?), and she, like Glenn, barely knew Enid. I don't buy that motivation for a second. Perhaps it was Glenn's pending parenthood that made his paternal instincts kick in. Whatever the case, he forced her to head back toward the community, which they reach just in time to watch its walls finally crumble under all that walker weight. That event immediately follows one of the sweeter scenes of this season, in which, for a brief moment, all seems well inside Alexandria. Father Gabriel held his prayer circle, Rick's disapproval be damned. (Rick immediately ripping down the flyers that Gabriel put up advertising the gathering was such a catty, high school thing to do, and I absolutely loved it.) Rick begrudgingly accepted Tobin's assistance reinforcing the fences, perhaps for the first time considering these people worthy of helping (both Rick helping them and vice versa). And finally, Maggie gets the sign she's been waiting for: a big bunch of green balloons, sent up by Glenn and Enid as a signal that they're alive and nearby. Then, the church that took some of the Wolves' truck's impact collapses, felling a section of Alexandria's wall with it. If ever the show wanted to drive home the point that religion is dead (and specifically, Father Gabriel and Morgan's beliefs in a higher moral power), it certainly achieved that with this metaphor. It says a lot about how self-involved these characters are – Rick's gang included – that not one person noticed that that building was unstable before it came crashing down. There were several of ominous shots of boards breaking off and falling to the ground, not to mention plenty cracking and creaking sounds. Sure, the walkers waiting outside the walls made considerable noise of their own, conceivably enough to mask any rumblings from the church. But no one on the watch towers noticed pieces of the facade flying off? And furthermore, no one thought it was a good idea to check on the church's structural integrity after the truck crash? Honestly, these Alexandrians truly do deserve to die. And it's a shame, too, since several of them have been bending over backwards to prove their worth recently, including Tobin this week. Though his character has revealed himself to be sensible in the past (sticking up for Abraham at the construction site last season, backing up Rick's zombie parade plan), he really amped things up tonight. He forces Rick to let him help with the aforementioned reinforcements, and while the two are working, Tobin makes his case for why he and the rest of the Alexandrians are not the lost causes Rick so clearly thinks they are. He readily admits that the community wasn't prepared for the recent horrors they've experienced (an idea already familiar to viewers), but points out that Rick initially didn't do himself any favors in trying to sway his new neighbors to trust him. "You scared the hell out of people when we first saw you," Tobin tells the constable, hilariously citing Rick's scraggly facial hair and wild-eyed demeanor. "That beard, the way you looked around like you were seeing things we weren't hiding around the corners. Turns out, you were. Things moved slow here. And then things just started moving fast. Too fast. But don't give up on us." Rick at least made an outward effort this week, though privately, with Michonne, he revealed once again his willingness to leave the Alexandrians in the dust should things go further south. During one of their powwows (regular events last season that I was glad to see recur tonight), Michonne calls him on this, telling the constable that they're all in this together now – hell, they're literally all together inside Alexandria's walls – and any excuse to pretend otherwise is B.S. I appreciate that she's sticking to her guns here, continuing the journey she began last season to open her mind and accept her new home. It doesn't help her case, unfortunately, that Deanna then immediately ambushes them to excitedly reveal her new map, like a proud kindergartener showing off her latest finger painting. (The blocking of this scene also illustrated their divide, with Rick and Michonne staged to look much taller than her in the frame – a small but nice choice by the director.) It's not a good look for Deanna, though, again, it rings true – she may have expanded her view of the world, but she's still an idealist, and wholeheartedly believes, "There's gonna be an after this." Of course, that now rests squarely on the Alexandrians' shoulders, since they have yet another wave of attackers – these ones flesh-eating – coming right for them. Will they make good on the (admittedly scant) training that Rick and Rosita tried to impart? Or will they react like Eugene, unable to perform when the going gets rough? I suspect it will be a mixture of both. Other thoughts: - One person certain to get into some trouble next week is Spencer. He's already proven he's a liability, thanks to stealing from the pantry, being a dick to his mom, and generally just thinking he's better than everyone. This week, he doubles down on the dumbassery by trying to climb over the wall – and the walkers below – using a grappling hook. Amazingly enough, this doesn't work, and he almost tumbles right into the hungry horde; he needs Tara to shoot down the zombies grabbing for his legs, while Rick, Tobin, and Morgan pull him up to safety. Rick is furious that Spencer would risk his life for such a boneheaded plan, and force the rest of them to come running to save him, putting their lives at risk, too. Spencer explains that he wanted to try to get to a car to draw the walkers away from the gates – the same exact plan that Rick had, unbeknownst to him – and he thought that Rick wouldn't have agreed to let him do it if he'd asked first. Fair point, but still. It doesn't get much dumber than trying a crazy stunt in the name of saving the day, and failing miserably (and putting others in danger) in the process. - I was amused, however, by Spencer's nonchalant reaction to his ordeal: "I lost a damn shoe. Crap." - Another member of the Terrible Alexandrians club is Ron, who seems to have taken after his not-so-dearly-departed dad in the violently angry department. Though we don't see him commit any outright acts of abuse in this episode, something sinister is clearly brewing beneath the surface, just waiting to boil over. He seems overly-concerned with getting ammo in his gun, to the point of stealing some from the armory himself when Rick refuses to give him bullets. That shot of him fingering his trigger as he followed Carl (echoing the scene last season in which Rick did the same while watching Pete) was truly ominous, and I'm sure we're headed for a showdown between these two teens (and possibly Rick, too) soon. - I've made it clear that I'm fairly over Carl at this point, but I kind of loved how smug he was during Rick's gun tutorial with Ron. From commenting on everything his father said – like a self-satisfied Greek chorus of one – to chiming in with little digs at Ron's ineptitude ("That stuff's easy, right Dad?"), the younger Grimes was clearly enjoying lording his experience over Ron. Unfortunately for him, also like a Greek tragedy, that hubris may end up being his downfall. - Despite my issues with the big plot points this season, I've really enjoyed the small character moments that the writers have sprinkled into these episodes. Dr. Denise is already fully fleshed-out, a combination of flustered, friendly, and awkward when it comes to both her medical care and her interactions with others. Take her exchange with Morgan, where she opens the door stirring a mysterious white mess."I was making..." she starts, before trailing off and putting on a sheepish smile. "Do you want some oatmeal?" Later, she admits that she's still not fully confident in her caregiving, confessing to Morgan that she's had to make up cheat sheets to remember basic medical skills. (I loved the FWoPPRS mnemonic.) I like her a lot already. (See, "Walking Dead" writers? This is how you build an interesting character. You should try it with Tara – a.k.a. My Middle Finger Emotes Better Than I Do – sometime.) But my affection for her probably means she's in danger of dying now, right? Her involvement in Morgan's secret stashing of a Wolf certainly suggests that there's trouble afoot, though that plotline was a powder keg before she got involved. - Thankfully, Carol now knows what's going on, and can hopefully help devise a plan to deal with it before the Wolf escapes (or his friends come back to claim him). Morgan has already shown signs of cracking, but he seems about to burst this week. Earlier, he confessed to Rick, Carol, and Michonne that he let several Wolves escape during the ambush because he couldn't bring himself to do otherwise. "I don't know what's right anymore," a weary Morgan tells the group. "'Cause I did wanna kill those men. I saw what they did, what they wanted to keep doing. I knew I could end it. But I also know that people can change. 'Cause everyone sitting here has. All life is precious. And that idea changed me, it brought me back, and it keeps me living. ... I've thought about letting that idea go. But I don't want to." "You may have to," Michonne replies. "Things aren't as simple as four words." That's undoubtedly true, and as Rick suggests, Morgan can't possibly survive in the world with that attitude. Morgan doesn't even think he should still be alive, since he can't understand why Rick didn't kill him back when they last met in season three's "Clear." If Morgan had died then, he explains, he wouldn't have been there to save Aaron and Daryl from the Wolves' trap – but then the Wolves wouldn't have then followed them back to Alexandria, either. Every decision has consequences in the zombie apocalypse; what those consequences mean can vary wildly from person to person. Morgan seems to be realizing that practicing nonviolence can breed more violence in others. A true test of faith seems inevitable. - Once again, I'm frustrated that Eugene hasn't had much to do this season. But at least he got in a good line during machete training. "Hey!" he yelps as Rosita startles him. "I'm a weapons novice holding a significant blade here, and there are people in my proximity with open-toed shoes." Thanks for looking out, Eugene. (Also, to the idiots wearing open-toed shoes to machete training: Rethink your choices.) - Enid tends to induce eye-rolling in me whenever she's on screen, but I did like her line when she saw the zombies surrounding Alexandria: "The world is trying to die. We're supposed to just let it." Such a perfectly emo thing for a teenager to say. - Enid also trots out her equally-emo "JSS" motto again this week, scribbling it on an old check in an abandoned diner where she's hiding from Glenn. She absentmindedly plays with a little toy truck from the counter, and I'm wondering if this is supposed to further connect her to the Wolves, who used a truck to break into Alexandria, and also set those booby traps for Daryl and Aaron inside trucks at the canning factory. Then again, it could also signify she's part of the mysterious gang that Daryl came across last week, which used a truck to hunt down its escapees. It could also mean nothing. As we saw with the Judith kidnapping fakeout, sometimes props are just props. (Though seriously, why plant a red herring jar of baby food on that Wolf? Seems a little too significant to just be meaningless.) Something to keep an eye on, though, as the season progresses. - As mentioned above, this is the last episode before the midseason finale, and the last one I'll receive an advance screener for in 2015. I'll try to get my recap up ASAP after the episode airs, but it may take me a while – based on all the pieces put into play tonight, I have a feeling there will be plenty of action to unpack next week. Is 'Hunger Games' $101M Opening Weekend Really a Bad Thing? Posted: When is a movie that opens with an estimated $101.0 million a box office disappointment? Sure, "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay -- Part 2" topped the charts, becoming the fifth biggest debut of 2015 and the eighth biggest November opening ever. But this time, Jennifer Lawrence's Katniss had an especially difficult challenge: living up to her franchise's lofty standards. By that measure, her arrow fell well short of the mark. After all, this same weekend last year, "Mockingjay -- Part 1" opened with $121.9 million -- also slightly lower than pundits expected. And the first two installments opened above $150 million. In fact, "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" was the biggest movie of 2013, the biggest November opening in history and the biggest debut ever for a movie built around a female star. So "Mockingjay -- Part 2" had a lot to live up to. Reviews of the new movie, however, were generally good (70 percent fresh on Rotten Tomatoes), and early tracking suggested that the movie would open with about $120 million. And word-of-mouth among this weekend's viewers was strong, too, as measured by an A- grade at CinemaScore. It even picked up some IMAX screens discarded by "Spectre," so there was a likely boost from large-screen ticket surcharges. So to fall $20 million short of expectations makes "Part 2"'s debut all the more shocking. There'll be lots of second guessing (and making faces like Katniss') over that $20 million shortfall. Did fan disappointment over "Part 1" poison the well for the finale? Did hype for "Spectre" and the upcoming "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" suck all the oxygen out of the multiplex? Was the film's competition stronger than expected? Not really. Both of the new wide releases challenging Katniss -- "The Night Before" (below) and "Secret In Their Eyes" -- underperformed this weekend. Plus, there are plenty of strong holdover movies that older audiences are still paying to see, including the new James Bond movie (in second place this weekend, with another estimated $14.6 million), "The Martian" (with an estimated $3.7 million in its eighth week), and "Bridge of Spies" (an estimated $1.9 million this weekend, its sixth). "Secret" follows a pattern this fall of grown-up, awards-bating films turning out to be critical or commercial duds -- or both. "Everest," "Black Mass," "The Walk," "Steve Jobs," "Truth," "Burnt," "Suffragette," "The 33," and "By the Sea" all failed to meet expectations. Only "Spotlight" (which cracked the top 10 this week, reaching eighth place with an estimated $3.6 million as it expanded into 598 theaters) and "Brooklyn" (No. 12, with an estimated $1.2 million as it expanded into 111 theaters) are showing that they could be modest mainstream hits. For all the wailing and gnashing of teeth that this weekend's underperformers will provoke, this was still a very strong week at the box office -- the biggest weekend since July. This year's total box office is still a shade ahead of where it was this time a year ago and in 2013, the year that holds the box office record. Besides, "Mockingjay -- Part 2," which has already earned $247 million worldwide, certainly will turn a huge profit. But that profit will probably be $50 to $100 million below expectations. In an industry increasingly defined by and dependent upon global blockbusters, that's a lot of money to leave on the table. %Slideshow-341509% This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Weekend Box Office: 'Mockingjay - Part 2' Opens to 'Hunger Games' Franchise Low Posted: LOS ANGELES (AP) — "Mockingjay — Part 2," the final "Hunger Games" film, has soared to a $101 million opening in its first weekend in theaters. For most films this would be a coup, but "The Hunger Games" had its own records to beat, and this sets a new low for the four-film franchise. The series kicked off with a $152.5 million weekend in 2012 — one of the highest openings of all time. Lionsgate split the final book in Suzanne Collins' trilogy into two films, following the precedent of "Twilight" and "Harry Potter" whose box office peaked with the final installments. Other new openers include the Seth Rogen comedy "The Night Before," which took fourth place with $10.1 million, and "The Secret in Their Eyes." The Julia Roberts thriller earned only $6.6 million. 'Toy Story': 20 Things You (Probably) Don't Know About Pixar's First Movie Posted: These days, when a Pixar movie is as close to a sure thing as films get, it's hard to remember what a risky venture the first one was. After all, when "Toy Story" arrived 20 years ago this week (on November 22, 1995) as the first feature-length computer-animated movie, it was hailed as an instant classic and was a huge hit, launching Pixar as a reliable entertainment brand and creating a new industry of digital filmmakers. Still, "Toy Story" almost never got off the ground. Here's the behind-the-scenes story you don't know, about the daunting obstacles that Woody and Buzz and the rest of Andy's toys had to overcome in order to travel to infinity and beyond.1. Future Pixar chief and "Toy Story" co-writer/director John Lasseter (pictured) was a junior animator at Disney in 1982 when he saw the studio's groundbreaking "Tron" and first recognized the potential of computer animation. When he suggested to Disney brass that the studio make a computer-animated feature, they fired him. 2. Lasseter soon found himself at Pixar, then a computer graphics company owned by Steve Jobs and best known for its hardware. In 1988, to show off what Pixar's machines could do, Lasseter directed a short all-CGI cartoon called "Tin Toy." The film won an Oscar, starting Lasseter back on the path toward making a full-length computer-animated film -- and toward negotiating with his old employers to distribute it. 3. Before "Toy Story," Disney had a relationship with Pixar as a user of its computer-assisted production system ("CAPS"), which Disney animators used on the wedding sequence in "The Little Mermaid" and the ballroom sequence during the title number in "Beauty and the Beast." Critics singled out that scene with praise, helping persuade Disney to expand its collaboration with Pixar. 4. Lasseter's Cal Arts classmate Tim Burton -- another former Disney animator -- returned to the Disney fold with the release of "The Nightmare Before Christmas." Made by animators independent of Disney, working at a studio in San Francisco, "Nightmare" was the first animated feature made by outsiders to bear the Disney brand. The success of that 1993 stop-motion film was the final straw that convinced Disney that it could make a feature with the independent Bay Area team at Pixar, Lasseter has said. 5. Still, the Pixar team ran into frequent opposition with Disney because they wanted to make a movie that was not at all a typical Disney cartoon. They didn't want a fairy tale, they didn't want a musical, and they didn't want a story where the side characters were more colorful than the protagonists. They wanted to tell the kind of story that had never been told in a cartoon before: a mismatched-buddy comedy, à la "48 Hrs." or "Midnight Run." 6. The original Woody (pictured) got his name because he was a ventriloquist dummy. He was also creepy and tyrannical. Over time, he evolved into a pull-string cowboy doll with the reassuring voice of Tom Hanks, but the animators kept the name, now as a tribute to Western character actor Woody Strode. 7. The initial idea for "Toy Story" was to pair the cynical Woody dummy with Tinny, the wide-eyed soldier from "Tin Toy." The premise of toys that came to life seemed well suited to Pixar's capabilities, since, in the early days of CGI, the easiest things to render were plasticky, artificial surfaces like those that characterize toys. 8. The filmmakers deemed Tinny too old-fashioned and updated him to a more modern soldier toy, and finally settled on an astronaut. 9. Buzz Lightyear was originally named Tempest, after the Atari game that obsessed the animators. The name "Buzz," of course, came from astronaut Buzz Aldrin. 10. While Tom Hanks was always the filmmakers' first choice for Woody, they initially sought Billy Crystal. (He would eventually play the lead in Pixar's "Monsters, Inc." and "Monsters University.") They also considered Bill Murray and Jim Carrey before going with Tim Allen, then starring in the hit sitcom "Home Improvement" on Disney-owned ABC. 11. Future "Buffy" and "Avengers" guru Joss Whedon (above) was a script doctor on the film. He came up with the beloved line, "You are a sad, strange little man, and you have my pity." 12. Lasseter's wife, Nancy, was the inspiration for Bo Peep. 13. Not yet famous for his kick-ass female characters, Whedon wanted to make Barbie a heroic presence late in the script, but Mattel declined to license her image to the filmmakers. Years later, of course, Barbie and Ken became major characters in "Toy Story 3." 14. On November 19, 1993, almost two years to the day before the film's release, Pixar took a rough cut of animated storyboards and screened it before Disney executives. The disastrous result was known in Pixar lore as "Black Friday." The characters were ornery, their chemistry was awkward, and the story didn't work. Disney threatened to pull the plug on the project, but the animators begged for three months to give the script a complete overhaul. When they returned, Disney approved the new script, and the filmmakers were off and running. 15. Pixar initially thought it would be able to render the film with a team of eight animators and 53 computers. It ended up using 33 animators and 300 computers. Each machine was named for an animal and would emit the animal's signature cry when it completed a frame of the film. 16. To figure out how the green plastic army men would move, the animators nailed planks to their own shoes and spent a day trying to walk with their feet attached to a board. 17. The film was initially budgeted at $17 million (compared to $45 million for Disney's 1994 hand-drawn feature "The Lion King"), but the cost soon ballooned to $30 million. 18. In North America, "Toy Story" earned $192 million at the box office. Overseas, it took in another $170 million. The three movies to date in the franchise have sold $1.9 billion worth of tickets worldwide. 19. "Toy Story" became the first animated film nominated for an Original Screenplay Oscar. Randy Newman earned two Oscar nods, one for his instrumental score and one for his song, "You've Got a Friend in Me." The movie didn't win any competitive Oscars, but Lasseter did get a special achievement Academy Award, "for the development and inspired application of techniques that have made possible the first feature-length computer-animated film." 20. Hanks improvised so much during the voice recording sessions that the Pixar team saved the outtakes he generated in 1994 and used them as dialogue in the sequels, including the forthcoming "Toy Story 4," due in 2018. %Slideshow-333296% This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Posted: Chiwetel Ejifor has played his fair share of villains on screen -- notably in "Serenity" and "Children of Men." His new thriller, "Secret In Their Eyes," puts him in a new light where he gets to, finally, play a good guy. In "Eyes," Ejifor plays Ray, a rising FBI investigator and hero -- albeit a morally-conflicted one -- struggling to find justice when the man suspected of murdering Julia Roberts' daughter is released from custody. The world Ray occupies is full of grey, and it's up to men like him to sort it all out -- no matter the cost. Moviefone recently sat down with the Oscar-nominated actor to discuss the challenges of playing such a character, and his next project -- Marvel's "Doctor Strange." 'Central Intelligence' Trailer Teams Up The Rock and Kevin Hart Posted: All you need is a little Hart and a big Johnson (insert the wink emoji). The teaser trailer for "Central Intelligence" has a lot of fun with its mismatched stars, Kevin Hart and Dwayne Johnson, with plenty of visual gags comparing their very different physical statures. Calvin (Hart) is a boring accountant who was once king of their high school, while Bob was the overweight nerd who filled out to become This totally fits in with Hart's very successful ouevre — action comedies that partner him with a very different personality (see: "Ride Along" with Ice Cube). But "Central Intelligence" has the bonus of starring The Rock, who really should do more comedies. And seeing a fat version of Johnson singing and dancing? Sold. Melissa McCarthy Wants to Rule the World Again in 'The Boss' Trailer Posted: Once a boss, always a boss. In the trailer for "The Boss," Melissa McCarthy falls hard from her position of power and wealth, but isn't about to give up the fight to kick some business butt. She plays Michelle Darnell, the "wealthiest woman in America" — until she's busted for insider trading. After serving time in prison, she has nowhere to go except to crash with her former assistant (Kristen Bell). Michelle's business instincts are still sharp, though, and she soon uses them to start up a rival Girl Scouts-like organization to sell brownies. "The Boss" was co-written by McCarthy and husband Ben Falcone, who also directed. It looks and feels a lot like their previous collaboration, "Tammy." There are a lot of funny moments in the trailer, and McCarthy looks to be at the top of her game here — aggressive, ruthless, smart, but also weirdly naive. Bell seems to play well off of her, and it's nice that the movie is so focused on women and girls. "The Boss" opens in theaters April 8, 2016. Want more stuff like this? A 'Hunger Games' Prequel Could Happen (But It Won't Star Katniss) Posted: The end is nigh for the "Hunger Games" franchise, with "Mockingjay -- Part 2" hitting theaters today. It's sad to say goodbye to Katniss and co. -- but could there be more stories to tell in Panem? "Mockingjay" director Francis Lawrence tackled that question in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, in which he said that if the "Hunger Games" films were to continue, he'd be interested in making a prequel. "The interesting part of the story for me is to go back 75 years earlier and see how everything became the way it is," Lawrence told EW. "I'm sure if [author] Suzanne [Collins] were to get inspired and decide there's another story that's important for her to tell that exists within the world of Panem and whether about the Dark Days, another character, or another set of Games, whatever that could be, I'm sure it would be great. And I'd loved to be involved, absolutely." While that's exciting, Lawrence said that any new "Hunger Games" film would have to focus on different characters, since "with the end of this story, we've reached the end of Katniss's story." "I think that Suzanne created such an iconic character, and I think she's the main reason why everyone comes back to these stories," Lawrence continued. "Now, that's come to an end." The director faced similar questions about continuing the series when "Mockingjay -- Part 1" rolled around, and seemed less sure of plans for new films only a year ago. Perhaps Lawrence just isn't ready to say goodbye to these films yet, either. We can't blame him. "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay -- Part 2" is in theaters now. Krysten Ritter Thought the 'Jessica Jones' Pitch Was 'Terrible' Posted: Excitement for Netflix's new Marvel series "Jessica Jones" has reached a fever pitch, with the series finally, officially making its streaming debut today. Krysten Ritter, who plays the titular star, seems perfect for the part, but according to the actress, she initially wasn't thrilled with the pitch for the show. In an interview with Vulture, Ritter described the "Jessica" audition process, and said that from the way her manager described the series, it sounded less than promising. "The first pitch from my manager was terrible," Ritter recalled to Vulture. "I got a call, you know, 'Netflix wants to see you for this show, it's Marvel, it's a superhero show.' And I like to audition, so I was like, 'Okay, I'll go, but I'm never gonna get that.' My manager was like, 'No, no — it's not your typical superhero show. Your character's really bad at it.' I was like, 'Okay, uhh, what does that mean? Is it, like, slapstick? What is that?' So at first I didn't know what to expect, but it didn't sound very good." Of course, the "your character's really bad at it" part was putting things a bit simply (Jessica is a former hero who's turned her back on her abilities after some scarring experiences), and once Ritter saw the script, she quickly realized that the series was a different breed of superhero show. "It wasn't until I got the super-secretive encrypted material that I realized, 'Oh, wow, this is really interesting! It's really dark!,'" Ritter told Vulture. " ... This is a thriller first and superhero show second. And at the end of the meeting, they also said, 'Oh, and she needs to be funny.' And that's when I think they really got me. That's when I got obsessed. At that point, I got cocky and was like, 'Oh, she has to be funny? Come on, who else are you gonna get?'" Looks like "Jones" landed the right Jessica for the job. We can't wait to see her in action. "Jessica Jones" is streaming now on Netflix. Mark Hamill Has an 'I Am Your Father'-Style 'Force Awakens' Secret Posted: Mark Hamill has been dealing with "Star Wars" secrecy for decades, first as part of George Lucas's original trilogy, and now as one of the stars of the new chapter, "The Force Awakens." But the actor has revealed an even deeper layer to the mystery surrounding the fate of Luke Skywalker this time around -- and it seems to be on the same level as the series's most famous twist. In a recent interview with PC Gamer, Hamill chatted about not spilling intel about the films, and how that's been the protocol pretty much ever since he joined the fantasy series way back in 1977. Things really came to a head with 1980's "The Empire Strikes Back," though, especially with the revelation that Darth Vader is Luke's father. "I'm good about keeping secrets," Hamill told the magazine. "I'm proud of the fact that I knew a year and a half before anybody else that he was actually dad-Vader. I didn't even tell Harrison [Ford], or my wife, ... because ['Empire Strikes Back' director] Irvin Kershner said 'I know something, I'm going to tell you. George [Lucas] knows, I know and now I'm gonna tell you, and if it leaks, we'll know it's you.'" That's a pretty intense secret to carry around -- Hamill called it "a mind-boggling plot twist" -- but it turns out that "The Force Awakens" director J.J. Abrams has some mysterious tricks up his sleeve, too. "Now it's happening all over again," Hamill said of the run-up to the release of "Awakens." "I'm not even authorized to tell you I'm in 'Episode VII.' It's all secret." While it isn't technically a secret that Hamill is in "The Force Awakens," he really hasn't talked about the flick at all, and has been noticeably absent from promotional materials. Is Luke Skywalker's big surprise really more shocking than "I am your father"? It will be pretty hard to top that, but we can't wait to find out. Michael Gross, 'Ghostbusters' Logo Designer, Dies at 70 Posted: Michael Gross, the man responsible for the famous "Ghostbusters" logo from the comedy classics, has died. He was 70. Gross was a designer and producer whose eclectic career spanned decades and different mediums. In the early 1970s, he worked as an art director designing covers for National Lampoon magazine, and was responsible for one of the publication's most famous images, featuring a dog with a gun pointed at its head and the slogan, "If you don't buy this magazine we'll kill this dog." He also did some freelance design work for John Lennon and Yoko Ono. While working for National Lampoon, Gross made many famous friends, and followed his pals Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd to Los Angeles in 1979, where they eventually collaborated on 1984's "Ghostbusters," Gross's second film. It was for that flick that Gross designed the logo, called No Ghosts, which became synonymous with the series and an iconic image known throughout the world. Gross continued his career as a film producer (he also dabbled in production design), and was behind several more hits, including "Ghostbusters" movie and TV spinoffs, and the films "Legal Eagles," "Twins," "Kindergarten Cop," "Beethoven," and "Dave." He retired from the movie business in 1995. Gross passed away at his California home on Monday after a long battle with cancer. He is survived by a daughter, a son, and three grandchildren. 'The Hunger Games': 15 Things You (Probably) Don't Know About the Blockbuster Franchise Posted: What's left to say about "The Hunger Games" franchise? You've seen the first three movies, you've contributed to their $2.3 billion worldwide box office haul, and you've helped make stars out of Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, and Liam Hemsworth. Still, as immersed as you've been in Suzanne Collins' post-apocalyptic series of books and movies over the past few years, there are still things you may not know about the making of the four films. So before you see "Mockingjay -- Part 2," check out these 15 things you need to know about the exploits of the Girl on Fire. 1. Among those who auditioned to play Katniss: Abigail Breslin, Chloe Grace Moretz (pictured), Emma Roberts, and Shailene Woodley. 2. Lawrence knew just how life-changing the role of Katniss would be for her, and she responded to the offer by saying no. But then she thought about it for three days, realized she would be disappointed if she didn't play the part, and changed her mind. 3. To prepare for his audition for the role of Gale, Liam Hemsworth ran lines with his brother, "Thor" star Chris Hemsworth, who rehearsed as Katniss. 4. Lawrence learned to shoot arrows from no less than five-time Olympic archer and bronze medal-winner Khatuna Lorig. 5. During down time on the "Hunger Games" shoot, Lawrence tried to impress co-star Josh Hutcherson (Peeta) by claiming she could kick so high her foot would clear his head. It didn't. She swatted him in the temple and knocked him out cold. 6. According to Entertainment Weekly, during the "Hunger Games" shoot, Lawrence went to an Elvis Costello concert one night and got up on the stage to dance. No one recognized the 21-year-old, then still on the cusp of fame. 7. Usually, second-unit directors, who film the scenic shots and other background material so that the director can focus on working with the stars, are unknowns working their way up to becoming directors. But the second-unit director on "Hunger Games" was Oscar-winning A-lister Steven Soderbergh, who came in for one day to film the District 11 riot. 8. The elaborate costumes Effie Trinket (Elizabeth Banks) wears in "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" were borrowed from an Alexander McQueen collection. 9. "Catching Fire" is (as of this writing) not just the highest-grossing of the "Hunger Games" films (at $425 million), it is also the highest-grossing film of 2013. It also marked the first time since "The Exorcist" in 1973 that the year's most lucrative movie had a top-billed female protagonist. 10. The two "Mockingjay" movies were filmed back-to-back. The epic-length production involved 152 days of shooting over the course of 10 months, in locations that included Boston, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Paris, and Berlin. 11. Philip Seymour Hoffman's death in 2014 occurred when he had just seven days of shooting left, on two scenes as game designer/rebel propagandist Plutarch Heavensbee. 12. Initially, the filmmakers contemplated using digital trickery to generate a performance for those two "Mockingjay -- Part 2" scenes (as was done for Oliver Reed when he died during production of "Gladiator"), but the scenes were ultimately rewritten so that they didn't involve his character. 13. "Mockingjay -- Part 2" is being released throughout most of the world in 2D and 3D versions, but here, where 3D fatigue has set in, it's just in 2D. 14. Although Suzanne Collins wrote only three "Hunger Games" books, studio Lionsgate has announced it's hoping to develop sequels and prequels to keep the franchise going, the way Warner Bros. is doing with "Harry Potter." 15. Over the next four years, Lionsgate is preparing at least three theme park attractions based on "The Hunger Games," one in Dubai, one in Macao, and one north of Atlanta. Presumably, guests will not be forced to kill each other. %Slideshow-334059% This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Best of Late Night TV: One Direction's New Band Member and Justin Bieber's Secret Handshake Posted: If you're like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don't worry; we've got you covered. Here's the best of what happened last night on late night. Please commence shaking, crying and flailing, because there's a new member of One Direction. And he's a potato. Soon he will be extremely famous, and in the words of Jimmy Kimmel, "might be be dating Ariana Grande." Let's just hope he doesn't get murdered on Thanksgiving. Speaking of super famous people who teenagers are completely obsessed with (not to be confused with potatoes), Justin Bieber swung by "The Tonight Show" and got in on a super-secret handshake with Jimmy Fallon. It was...lengthy. Over on "Late Night," Josh Hutcherson chatted about living with the cast of "The Hunger Games" in a hotel. Turns out they had an open door policy so you can imagine the hijinks than ensued, amirite? Meanwhile, something totally amazing happened on "The Late Late Show:" Byran Cranston performed with the Grown Man Boy Band, wearing a white suit and mohawk. All you need to know is that he sang the lyrics: "I'll make love to you in my minivan." Blessed. Finally, and also on "The Late Late Show," Joseph Gordon-Levitt kissed James Corden on the mouth. It was beautiful, so please watch. %Slideshow-342114% This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
'Secret In Their Eyes' Writer-Director Reveals How Julia Roberts Changed the Entire Movie Posted: In Hollywood, writer-director Billy Ray is kind of a big deal. 'Fantastic Beasts' Will Be Like 'Goblet of Fire,' 'Harry Potter' Producer Says Posted: As if news about "Harry Potter" prequel "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" wasn't already exciting enough, there's even more for Potterheads to celebrate: The flick is heavily influenced by the tone of previous "Potter" outing "Goblet of Fire." David Heyman, a longtime producer on the "Potter" series who's also executive producing "Fantastic Beasts," said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that director Mike Newell's entry in the franchise is the "Potter" flick most similar to "Beasts." "['Fantastic Beasts' has] got the charm of the fourth," Heyman told EW. " ... [I]t's got the humor of that film. It has the romantic comedy, that fish-out-of-water humor, that very human, natural character comedy." But if fans are expecting an all-laughter, all the time experience, they'll be disappointed. As Heyman explained to EW, "Beasts" director David Yates has plans to balance the lighter themes with heavier ones. " ... David is always looking for truthful, human moments, it's never just a gag, he's grounding [the storytelling moments] in a reality," Heyman said. "['Beasts'] is very funny, it's got a big heart, and there's darkness too." Sounds spectacular. "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" is due in theaters on November 18, 2016. Bette Midler Just Crushed Our 'Hocus Pocus 2' Dreams Posted: A sequel to 1993's "Hocus Pocus" has been talked about for years and years (and years), and while there have been some recent rumors that the beloved Disney flick is set for a revival, star Bette Midler just officially crushed our dreams. In a Facebook Q&A with fans this week, Midler answered a query about whether "Hocus Pocus 2" would ever happen -- and said, in no uncertain terms, that it would not. "After all these years and all the fan demand, I do believe I can stand and firmly say an unequivocal no," Midler responded. That's a different tune than the one Midler was singing just a year ago, when the actress said in a Reddit AMA that she would be on board for a sequel, and urged fans to inundate Disney with requests to make it happen. Costars Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy also chimed in with their support for a second flick. So what changed? It's unclear, though Midler isn't wrong that a lot of time has passed; it's been more than 20 years since the film first hit theaters, and you'd think that if Disney wanted to make another one, they would have already done so. The Mouse House briefly conjured up sequel talk again when they staged a new "Hocus Pocus"-themed show at Disney World this year, but no further announcement ever materialized. While we're disappointed by Midler's statement, we can't say we're surprised. We'll keep our brooms crossed just in case a miracle happens, but it seems we've seen the last of the Sanderson sistahs.
