James Gunn Debunks 'Guardians Vol. 2' Rumor, Slams Spoiler Culture Posted: There's been a juicy rumor floating around the web about the identity of Peter Quill's father in "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2." But according to director James Gunn, it's "completely false" -- and also kind of lame that people are trying to spoil the movie in the first place. In a Facebook post, Gunn shot down the theory presented by Heroic Hollywood (and touted as confirmed by four different sources) as total bunk. Gunn said that he was speaking out not necessarily because he felt a great need to reveal the truth, but to decry the ridiculous rush to declare any and all spoilerific details about an upcoming film as a journalistic scoop. The director said he would never again directly address such rumors in case one of them turns out to be true, and truly ruin an important plot point, but felt he needed to say something now in order to explain that decision. Here's an excerpt of what the director had to say on Facebook:
Gunn added that even if certain aspects of "Vol. 2" inevitably get spoiled, he assured fans that such twists are "only a very small part of what we're cooking up for you." Sounds like a winning recipe to us.

John Stamos Gets Probation in DUI Plea, Avoids Jail Time Posted: John Stamos has pleaded no contest to DUI, avoiding jail time and getting three years probation following his arrest this summer. The actor entered his plea via his attorney at a hearing in Los Angeles on Tuesday, answering charges that he was driving under the influence of a drug back in June. Stamos faced a jail sentence of six months in connection with that charge, which was handed down last month. His arraignment hearing was initially slated to take place a few days after that, but was postponed until this week. Instead of jail time, Stamos, a first-time offender, has been placed under informal probation for 36 months, and will have to pay a fine of $390 for the misdemeanor drug charge. He will also have to attend classes at the DMV as part of his probation, though according to Deadline, that should not affect the actor's work schedule on his freshman Fox sitcom, "Grandfathered." Stamos was arrested on June 12 after an officer stated that the actor was "allegedly behaving strangely and driving erratically" in Beverly Hills. He was hospitalized that night, and entered into rehab for substance abuse soon after. Tom Cruise May Star in 'The Mummy' Reboot; Universal Denies Report Posted: UPDATE: According to Deadline, the news that Tom Cruise may be in negotiations to star in Universal's upcoming reboot of "The Mummy" is false, with the site claiming that both the studio and the actor's representatives are denying that report's veracity. As we reported earlier, Variety had the scoop that Cruise was in talks to headline the new version of "The Mummy," and help steer the studio's grand plan to revive all of its classic monster movies. But rival trade Deadline is debunking that report, claiming, "Both Universal and the star's people tell Deadline adamantly that no deal with Cruise is in the works for the film." Of course, Deadline didn't get either party to go on the record with those statements. (Universal declined to comment on Variety's story.) But the site says that Cruise is simply too busy to take the part -- whatever it may be -- citing his busy schedule filming the next "Jack Reacher" movie and "Mission: Impossible 6," which is slated to start production next August. In our original report -- which you can read in full below -- we noted that Cruise's transition into monster movies would be a bit of a departure for the actor. But, stranger things have happened. It seems unlikely that this particular scenario will pan out, but we'll wait until Universal says something on the record until we know for sure. Stay tuned. ORIGINAL REPORT: Today in crazy casting news: Tom Cruise is reportedly in talks to star in the upcoming reboot of "The Mummy." That potential unlikely marriage of mega-star and monster movie comes via a report from Variety, which says that Cruise is currently negotiating to take a lead role in the reboot. Cruise won't produce the film, Variety says, but "will play a major part in development." According to the trade, that development includes a master plan from Universal that will take a cue from the Marvel comics flicks, and involve all of the studio's classic monsters, including Frankenstein, Dracula, and the Wolf Man, among others. "Characters from the monster universe films are expected to crop up in each other's installments before culminating in an 'Avengers'-style tie-in film," per Variety's report. The trade also notes that Cruise's "Mummy" film will be unrelated to the previous, most recent "Mummy" flicks starring Brendan Fraser, which were all set in the past. The reboot will reportedly take place in the present day. Universal declined to comment on Variety's scoop, though if true, this could introduce Cruise to a whole new generation of fans -- not to mention genre fans. It's an odd mashup, but an intriguing one. We'll have to see if this plan pans out. Here Are the 2016 Independent Spirit Awards Nominees Posted: The nominations for the 2016 Film Independent Spirit Awards were announced Tuesday, giving boosts to several films' Oscars chances. "Carol" led the pack with six nominations, including nods in most of the major categories (Best Feature, Best Director, Best Screenplay), and two Best Lead Actress nominations for its headlining duo, Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara. It was followed by Netflix flick "Beasts of No Nation," which scored five nominations in the big categories (Best Feature, Best Director, Best Lead Male) as well as the technical ones (Best Cinematography, Best Editing). As TheWrap notes, "Beasts" nominations have helped secure it some serious consideration come Oscars time. But another big surprise was the small number of nominations for "Room," considered by many to be a Best Picture contender at the Academy Awards. It was left off the Spirit Awards's Best Feature list, though it did score a Best Female Lead nomination for Best Actress Oscar frontrunner Brie Larson. "Spotlight," meanwhile, also shored up its Oscar hopes, thanks to three Spirit Awards nominations, as well as its selection as the winner of the Robert Altman Award for Best Ensemble. Check out the full list of nominees below. The Independent Spirit Awards take place on February 27, 2016. 'Friday Night Lights' Is Becoming a Musical, With Familiar Face as Coach Posted: Let's all sing it together: Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose. Especially when someone is making a "Friday Night Lights" musical. "The Unauthorized Friday Night Lights Musical" is set to premiere in late spring or early summer in Los Angeles, and comes from Jordan Ross and Lindsey Rosin, the same people behind musical versions of "The O.C." and "Cruel Intentions." The latter got so much buzz that Ross and Rosin landed a deal at NBC to develop a "Cruel Intentions" sequel for television. The original "Friday Night Lights" ran for five seasons, first on NBC and then on DirecTV, and starred Kyle Chandler as Coach Eric Taylor and Connie Britton as his wife, Tami Taylor. While the show was lowly-rated on air, it's become a beloved classic thanks to streaming services. And it helped launch the careers of many of its young cast members. But the best part of the "FNL" news is who will play the all-important role of Coach. It's someone "FNL" fans know and love ... drumroll, please: Scott Porter! Porter played quarterback Jason Street in the original series. He's also a talented singer and performer, making him the perfect choice to play Coach in the "FNL" musical. Now, the only question is: Who's got the hair and voice to play Tami Taylor?! Ice Cube and Friends Are Back in 'Barbershop 3' Trailer to Cut Hair and Fight Violence Posted: The boys are back for "Barbershop 3: The Next Cut" — and this time, they're joined by the ladies. Global Grind debuted the first trailer for the follow-up to the 2002 original "Barbershop" and its 2004 sequel, "Barbershop 2: Back in Business." Calvin (Ice Cube) has joined forces with beauty shop owner Angie (Regina Hall) to save both of their businesses. That introduces a whole new level of banter and jokes in this third movie, and sparks fly between the men and women. There are new players on the scene, too — Nicki Minaj as a flirtatious hair stylist and Common a barber married to Terri (Eve), and they get involved in a bit of a love triangle. But while there's a lot of light-hearted fun, the movie also ventures into more serious territory as the staff and patrons of the shops band together to fight rising gang violence in Chicago. "Barbershop 3" opens in theaters April 15, 2016. Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. %Slideshow-295732% This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Best of Late Night TV: Adele's Box of Lies and 'Star Wars' as a Romantic Comedy Posted: If you're like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don't worry; we've got you covered. Here's the best of what happened last night on late night. It was "Star Wars" night over on "Jimmy Kimmel Live," and let's just say the show put their own spin on the film's trailer. Welcome to "Star Wars" as a romantic comedy. Because sometimes the greatest force of all...is love. *weeps* Jimmy Kimmel also had to deal with a suicidal Chewbacca, who threatened to throw himself off a building until eventually settling his feud with Harrison Ford. Turns out Chewy had an affair with Ford's wife, so file this under #GalaxyFarFarAwayDrama. *Also this clip features "Hello" by Adele, so prepare your eyes accordingly. Speaking of Adele, she showed up on "The Tonight Show" and played "Box of Lies" with Jimmy Fallon. Turns out she super terrible at lying, but super adorable at everything else. In the event that you need a change of pace from the emotional roller coaster that is Adele, Sarah Palin appeared on "Late Night" and defended her fellow politicians' decision to reject Syrian refugees. Oh. How shocking. Finally, Jimmy Kimmel asked J.J. Abrams the most important question all all time. WTF was up with the end of "Lost"? %Slideshow-342205% This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
