Marvel Studios Countdown: Who Is Valkyrie In 'Thor: Ragnarok'?

Posted: 16 Nov 2015 10:00 PM PST

There’s a Thor: Ragnarok screenplay out there somewhere, and those who’ve gotten a peek at its pages (including Devin Faraci at Birth.Movies.Death.) have begun to dole out little pieces of information. One of those nuggets is that the film will introduce Valkyrie to movie audiences. To comic fans, she’s a prominent B-lister, but Valkyrie is especially welcome on screen where female superheroes in the Marvel movies are nearly invisible, save for Black Widow. No one was thinking that far ahead in 1970, when Valkyrie first appeared in the pages of Avengers #83. The story begins with Valkyrie assembling her own team, The Liberators, made up of herself, Medusa, Black Widow, Scarlet Witch, and Wasp, to take a stand and do their own thing without playing second fiddle...

Christopher Nolan's 'Memento' Is Being Remade

Posted: 16 Nov 2015 08:00 PM PST

It probably shouldn't be surprising that Christopher Nolan's Memento is going to be remade. But it might still be a shocker that it's happening so quickly. The original thriller was released only 15 years ago, breaking Nolan out as a notable filmmaker while becoming a singular sensation for its clever backwards plot -- putting us inside the mind of a man with short-term memory loss in search of his wife's killer -- and twist ending.  Still, if we can get Spider-Man origin stories just a decade apart, maybe there's no minimum gap in Hollywood's mind. The people behind this remake might not be classified as Hollywood, however. The new Memento will be produced by Luxembourg's AMBI Pictures (which does have a distribution arm in Beverly Hills), which...

Official 'Alien: Covenant' Plot Turns Michael Fassbender Into the RoboKing of a New, Uncharted Paradise

Posted: 16 Nov 2015 06:00 PM PST

Prometheus is perhaps one of the most curious prequels ever made precisely because it constantly doesn't want to actually be an Alien prequel. It's as though Ridley Scott went out of his way to fall shy of connecting dots he knows people were expecting him to connect. The planetoid it takes place on (LV-223) isn't actually the planetoid from the 1979 movie (LV-426). The xenomorph isn't actually the same xenomorph from the first movie. The "space jockey" we all thought was a weird, giant alien with an elephant face is actually just a space suit for a human-looking alien. The whole thing is a fascinating, frustrating exercise in sidestepping fan expectations. Though, in retrospect, all of this is fitting since the movie is about the pain of chasing down...

'Home Alone' Turns 25! Here's the Real-Life Story That Inspired the Classic Movie

Posted: 16 Nov 2015 04:00 PM PST

It's every parent's worst nightmare: You're rushing to get ready for a trip and then once you're finally on your way you realize you forgot something super important. For many, that could be a phone charger or a proper jacket, but in the 1990 movie Home Alone that super-important something was a kid. Kevin!!! via GIPHY     25 years later Home Alone is one of the most successful live-action comedies of all time, and a certified classic. But what inspired the story in the first place? Did someone accidentally leave their kid at home while dashing off on vacation -- a kid who, when left on his own, watches gangster movies, orders a lot of cheese pizza and fends off two bumbling house burglars?  Not exactly. According to Home Alone...

Why Quentin Tarantino's 'The Hateful Eight' Is Different From Most Movies

Posted: 16 Nov 2015 02:30 PM PST

Tickets are expected to go on sale soon for Quentin Tarantino's new Western, The Hateful Eight. And if you want to see the movie in the optimal way, as the filmmaker intends it, you'll need to catch it during its initial limited release. Here's why:   What's so special about The Hateful Eight For the first two weeks, starting on Christmas Day, Tarantino's latest will only be found on 96 screens across the country. This is because these locations will be part of a "roadshow presentation," projecting actual film prints of an extended cut of the feature in extra-wide Ultra Panavision 70mm (aspect ratio: 2.76:1) with an intermission and an overture, just like in the old days.  How different is this from...

Movie News: First Look at Chris Pine in 'Wonder Woman'; an 'X-Men' Actor Joins 'Doctor Strange'

Posted: 16 Nov 2015 01:00 PM PST

Wonder Woman: Above is our first look at Chris Pine in costume from the set of Wonder Woman (see a full version here), which has just begun production in Europe. The actor, who is playing the superhero's love interest, Steve Trevor, is joined in the photo by Said Taghmaoui (G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra), who reportedly has a significant but unknown "good guy" role in the DC comic book adaptation. They're both dressed in period costume, for the World War I-era setting part of the movie takes place in. [/Film]   Doctor Strange: Martial artist Scott Adkins, who shared the role of Deadpool with Ryan Reynolds in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, has joined Marvel's Doctor Strange in a mysterious role. Presumably his action-ready background will be a...
