The Last Sci-Fi Blog: The 2015 Science Fiction State of the Union Posted: 19 Nov 2015 10:00 PM PST We are gathered here to day to discuss the current state of our most beloved genre, Science Fiction. Like any genre, we have up years and we have down years. We achieve warp speed and then we hit an asteroid. This is how the universe works. All we can do is assess the damage and learn what went wrong, what's going right, and how we can work to improve the sci-fi landscape moving forward. Welcome to this year's Science Fiction State of the Union. Let's begin. We have several pressing subjects to address. The State of the Hunger Games-Shaped Hole in Our Lives A looming crisis approaches our great Genre. For the past few years, the Hunger Games franchise has filled a very specific niche in our existence: harsh, thoughtful, political, angry, soap operatic... The First 'Midnight Special' Trailer Will Scratch Your '80s Sci-Fi Adventure Itch Posted: 19 Nov 2015 08:30 PM PST If writer-director Jeff Nichols isn't already on your "I'll watch anything this person makes" list, it's probably because you just haven't seen any of his movies. He's only made three so far and while they're all very different they do have one thing in common. They're about enduring whatever insanity life throws at you, be it family tragedy (Shotgun Stories), potential mental illness (Take Shelter), or a fugitive drifter (Mud) and still making the effort to be a good human being. That same theme definitely looks like it's carried through to Nichols' fourth film, Midnight Special, only this time it's filtered through the same genre spectrum that gave us '80s classics like Starman, E.T., and Firestarter. It's about a father... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

First 'A Monster Calls' Trailer Looks Like 'Where the Wild Things Are' Meets 'Pan's Labyrinth' Posted: 19 Nov 2015 04:30 PM PST Everyone deals with life and loss in different ways. Some bottle up their emotions, pretending their troubles don't exist. Some double down on life, pushing themselves to the limit enjoying whatever time they have left. Some don't have either luxury and must simply trudge along, dealing with the overwhelming finality of life one day at a time. That last option, which may seem the most depressing, forms the initial premise of A Monster Calls, but with a twist befitting the imagination of a young mind. Adapted from the award-winning fantasy novel and directed by the mighty J. A. Bayona (The Orphange, The Impossible), A Monster Calls is about a young boy whose single mother is diagnosed with a terminal illness. To cope with the day-to-day stress of watching his mother slip... George Lucas Explains Why He Stepped Away From 'Star Wars' Posted: 19 Nov 2015 03:00 PM PST George Lucas directed his last movie 10 years ago. That was, of course, Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (above), the concluding installment of the immensely popular yet highly-divisive prequel trilogy. Time has been kind to the third installment, which was quite effective at stirring emotions, even as it reached a climax that was a foregone conclusion, at least for anyone who saw the original Star Wars trilogy. In November 2012, Lucas sold the rights to Star Wars to Disney, and walked away from control of the franchise he created. But make no mistake, Lucas is still very much interested in the Star Wars universe. In a new video for Vanity Fair, he says that he's "curious that the Force doesn't get muddled into a bunch of gobbledygook." Watch... Meet the Movie You Won't Be Able to Watch Until 100 Years from Now Posted: 19 Nov 2015 01:30 PM PST There are jokes to be made about anticipating a movie that won't come out till, say, 2020, because with so much to consume at the current moment, why waste time on a film you won't be able to watch for another five years? Well, what about a film you won't be able to watch for another 100 years? How do we anticipate that, exactly? In one of the more unique short film tie-ins that we've ever seen for a product, filmmaker Robert Rodriguez (Sin City) teamed up with actor John Malkovich on a short film for the fancy schmancy Louis XIII Cognac, which is aged 100 years. So the bottles you find right now originated in 1915, and the bottles they're cookin' up in 2015 won't be opened till the year 2115. To honor this tradition, Louis XIII... [HeyUGuys] Battle of the Sexes: Emma Stone will portray tennis star Billie Jean King in Battle of the Sexes, which will dramatize a well-publicized 1973 exhibition match between King and "male chauvinist pig" Bobby Riggs, to be played by Steve Carell. Stone had to exit the project months ago due to a scheduling conflict, and Brie Larson was in talks to play the role, but Stone's schedule has now been...
