Remember When... 'Scream' Brought a Nearly Dead Genre Back to Life? Posted: 20 Dec 2016 09:00 PM PST It's never been accurate to say that horror movies were "dead," but they were certainly in poor health in the mid-1990s. A new sub-genre, the slasher movie, had emerged in the '80s, only to wear out its welcome with uninspired sequels and cheap imitations. Traditional horror subjects -- haunted houses, vampires, demonic possessions, etc. -- had gone mainstream, with arty offerings like Silence of the Lambs (1991), Bram Staker's Dracula (1992), and Interview with the Vampire (1994). Gore-fests got a much-needed shot in the arm and hatchet to the face 20 years ago this week, when Scream hit theaters and changed the rules by acknowledging that there were rules. Part of the problem, you see, had been that the target audience for slasher movies... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

'Rogue One' Roundup: Original Ending Revealed, a Character's Upcoming Return and Easter Eggs Galore Posted: 20 Dec 2016 07:30 PM PST Rogue One continues to dominate the box office following its opening weekend (another $18 million on Monday, helping to push Disney over a record $7 billion year), so let's keep talking about it). SPOILERS!!! The Original Original Ending Director Gareth Edwards tells Empire that very early on in the script stage of Rogue One, the main characters didn't die. Here's why (via io9): it was just assumed by us that we couldn’t do that...We thought we weren’t going to be allowed to but Kathy [Kennedy, President of Lucasfilm] and everyone at Disney were like, ‘Yeah it makes sense. I guess they have to because they’re not in A New Hope.’ And so from that point on we... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Reel TV: Sci-Fi Classic 'Metropolis' Will Be Remade by 'Mr. Robot' Creator Posted: 20 Dec 2016 04:30 PM PST Earlier today we got our first look at a new Blade Runner movie. So, it's only fitting that we also share some news about one of the biggest influences on the original Blade Runner. Fritz Lang's 1927 sci-fi feature Metropolis is a masterpiece not just of silent cinema but of any media ever. It's the sort of film that has inspired so many copycats and homages that it would seem safe from being remade. After all, it's managed to stay pure for 90 years now. Well, it turns out that was as long as it took. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Metropolis is going to be turned into a miniseries for television by Sam Esmail, creator of the hit series Mr. Robot. The premise will remain for a story set in a dystopian future of... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Martin Scorsese Plans to Digitally De-Age Robert DeNiro for Their Next Movie Together Posted: 20 Dec 2016 03:00 PM PST Director Martin Scorsese has teamed up with many actors over the years, but none more productively than Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio. With Scorsese's latest project, the intense spiritual drama Silence, opening in select theaters on Friday, many have wondered when the director might work with his favorite stars again. Scorsese first teamed with De Niro on 1973's Mean Streets and they've since made Taxi Driver, New York, New York, Raging Bull, The King of Comedy, Goodfellas, Cape Fear and Casino. Twenty years have passed and finally they're hoping to make The Irishman together.
