DVD Obscura: The New Indie and International Movies You Need to Watch Posted: 12 Dec 2016 10:00 PM PST New Indie Destined to be discussed throughout awards season is the noir-tinged neo-Western thriller Hell or High Water (Lionsgate Home Entertainment), which harkens to great films of the past while feeling utterly contemporary. Rapacious banks and economic malaise send two brothers (Chris Pine and Ben Foster) out on a focused robbery spree that ultimately attracts the attention of a Texas lawman (Jeff Bridges) on the cusp of retirement. The caper is smart, the characters are interesting (keep an eye peeled for scene stealers Gil Birmingham, Katy Mixon, Dale Dickey and Margaret Bowman), and the twists are unpredictable. Also available: Young hipsters attempt to navigate the world in the scathing Fort Tilden (Kino Lorber); Morris from America (Lionsgate Home Entertainment) features... Watch the Music Video for "How Far I'll Go" From 'Moana' Posted: 12 Dec 2016 08:30 PM PST Disney's latest animated feature, Moana, topped the box office for the third weekend in a row, and while it's not performing quite as well as the studio's own Zootopia or their Pixar-branded sequel Finding Dory, it does share that threepeat distinction. One thing it does have over the others, however, is a very successful soundtrack filled with original songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Opetaia Foa'i and Mark Mancina. One of those songs is "How Far I'll Go," which has been particularly hot because of its accolades. The tune was nominated for a Critics' Choice Award (but lost to a number from La La Land) and was just recognized this morning as a contender for a Golden Globe. An Oscar nomination is surely right around the... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Posted: 12 Dec 2016 07:00 PM PST Sigourney Weaver is about to return to the world of Pandora for a whopping four Avatar sequels, all filming simultaneously under the direction of James Cameron. Before that she'll star in another big fan-driven property, as a villain in Marvel's The Defenders on Netflix. And while she certainly has her plate full of big franchises, that's not stopping her from lending her talents to smaller projects too, like A Monster Calls, which hits theaters later this month. Based on the beloved children's book, A Monster Calls follows the story of a boy whose unlikely relationship with a monster helps him work through various hardships in his life, among them a bully, a mean grandmother and the realization that his mother is dying of cancer. Weaver plays the... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
The 'Assassin's Creed' Sequel May Turn Its Back On the Game Series Posted: 12 Dec 2016 05:00 PM PST Assassin's Creed hasn't even hit theaters yet but already the talk of a sequel is well underway. After all, this is the first movie based on a game series with nine main entries, plus over a dozen other smaller games, comics and novels. The only reason it got the greenlight in the first place was out of the hope it would spawn a whole bunch of sequels. With that said, fans of the games may feel a bit burned that the first sequel talk has nothing to do with any of the games. If the movie, starring Michael Fassbender, will be your first exposure to the world of Assassin's Creed, the basic overview is that each story involves characters using a technology that allows them to interact with memories from the past, with each game entry having been set in the far distant... Posted: 12 Dec 2016 01:30 PM PST Spider-Man: Homecoming: On the heels of the successful launch of its first trailer, Spider-Man: Homecoming will spawn a sequel. Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 is now set for release on Friday, July 5, 2019. No other details about the sequel have been announced. Bad Boys 4, which was previously scheduled for that date, has now moved up to May 24, 2019. [Deadline] The Last Photograph: The sequel to Justice League has been pushed back to make way for Ben Affleck's stand-alone Batman movie, leaving a hole in director Zack Snyder's schedule that he intends to fill by making The Last Photograph. 2017 Golden Globe Nominations: 'La La Land,' 'Moonlight' and Even 'Deadpool' Get Awards Spotlight Posted: 12 Dec 2016 12:23 PM PST The 2017 Golden Globe nominations have just been unveiled, giving us our first taste of what movies from 2016 everyone will still be talking about in a few month's time-- at least as far as prestigious awards shows go. The categories were largely dominated by a trio of titles everyone knew would be getting close to gold - Moonlight, La La Land, Manchester by the Sea - but throughout the ballot you can find plenty of surprises, and snubs. For example, Finding Dory didn't make the cut for Best Animated Motion Picture, a rarity for a Pixar movie. Fences, Silence and Arrival were all left out of Best Picture. Mel Gibson received his first Best Director nomination since 1995's Braveheart. And while it likely won't receive an Oscar nomination, Deadpool does have a shot...
