Christmas Box Office: 'Rogue One' & 'Sing' May Destroy 'Passengers' & 'Assassin's Creed'

Posted:

US-ENTERTAINMENT-PREMIERE-PASSENGERSThe "X-Men" powers of Jennifer Lawrence and Michael Fassbender -- even combined with Marvel's own Star-Lord Chris Pratt -- are unlikely to save "Passengers" and "Assassin's Creed" at the Christmas weekend box office. Sorry, but they're just no match for Felicity Jones and animated singing animals.

According to The Hollywood Reporter's box office projections, "Rogue One" is expected to dominate once again (no shock), with "Sing" taking the biggest haul of the three movies that opened Wednesday, Dec. 21. "Passengers" and (especially) "Assassin's Creed" are expected to have disappointing opening weekends, perhaps matching their disappointing reviews.

US-ENTERTAINMENT-FILM-PREMIERE-SING

• "Rogue One" opened Friday, Dec. 16 to big numbers, and THR said it's projected for a Friday-Monday holiday weekend gross of more than $110 million, putting its domestic intake above $300 million through Monday.

• "Sing," which cost about $75 million, is projected for a six-day (Wednesday-Monday) opening of roughly $80 million.

• "Passengers," which cost around $110 million, is expected to have a six-day launch of $27 million-$30 million. THR noted that Sony had hoped for a $30 million-$40 million start. That's not too far off, though.

• "Assassin's Creed," which cost around $125 million, is projected for a six-day opening of approximately $20 million. That's not great.

ENTERTAINMENT-US-PREMIERE-ASSASSIN'S CREED-ARRIVALSThese are, of course, projections, and by the time Tuesday rolls around to end the long holiday weekend, box office prognosticators could be in for a shock at what fans actually went to see over Christmas break.

Carrie Fisher 'Out of Emergency' & Stable After Heart Attack

Posted:

Star Wars Celebration 2016UPDATE: Not to jinx it, but it sounds like Carrie Fisher is out of the woods. Her brother, Todd Fisher, told the Associated Press that Carrie was "out of emergency" and stabilized around 4 p.m. Pacific Time on Friday. You lose, 2016! The Force was too strong with this one!

Previous updates:

Please stop what you're doing and form a prayer circle for Princess Leia. "Star Wars" icon Carrie Fisher suffered what emergency officials told the L.A. Times was a "cardiac episode" on a United Airlines flight from London to L.A. on Friday, Dec. 23. According to a fellow passenger, she had stopped breathing for "10 minutes or so" during the flight.

As of Friday around 1:30 p.m. West Coast time, Fisher was said to be in "critical condition." Around 2:45 p.m. Friday, TMZ reported, "when the plane landed paramedics worked on Carrie for 15 minutes with CPR before they were able to get a pulse. She's currently at UCLA Medical Center on a ventilator."

Later on Friday afternoon, TMZ reported that Fisher's daughter, "Scream Queens" and "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" actress Billie Lourd, arrived at UCLA Medical Center to support her mother. Fisher's beloved French bulldog Gary was also there. As you can read in tweets below, Gary was on the London-LAX flight with Fisher.

Premiere Of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" - Red CarpetTMZ was initially told that Fisher, 60, suffered the massive heart attack about 15 minutes before the plane landed in L.A. A flight attendant reportedly asked if there were medical personnel on board and -- thankfully -- an EMT happened to be sitting in the back of the plane and came up to first class to administer lifesaving measures.

The L.A. Times was told that Fisher "was in a lot of distress on the flight." The L.A. paper was told Fisher was rushed to the hospital by L.A. Fire Department paramedics shortly after noon.

A United Airlines spokesperson shared this statement with The Hollywood Reporter:

"Medical personnel met United flight 935 from London to Los Angeles upon arrival today after the crew reported that a passenger was unresponsive. Our thoughts are with our customer at this time and any requests for additional information should be directed to local authorities."

Fellow United passengers shared more details after the scary incident:

FRANCE-CANNES-FILM-FESTIVAL-ENTERTAINMENTFisher's fellow "Star Wars" co-stars reacted to the scary news with love and prayers:

Fisher was said to be traveling as part of her book tour for "The Princess Diarist" and to shoot the sitcom "Catastrophe."

A&E Changes KKK Series Title, Makes Clear Goal Is 'Exposing Hate'

Posted:

After protests and general confusion, A&E has changed the name of its documentary series on the Ku Klux Klan, clarifying its goal is not "to normalize the Klan." The network also announced its partnerships with the Anti-Defamation League and the African American civil rights organization Color of Change.

On Dec. 21, "Grey's Anatomy" star Ellen Pompeo was one of many people to react with outrage at the show, then called "Generation KKK." A&E responded to her tweets to say the documentary series is about "extracting families from the KKK & exposing hate." Pompeo replied, "Okay if that is what it is PLEASE promote it as such...PLEASE."

Well, A&E just released a statement announcing the doc would now be called "Escaping the KKK: A Documentary Series Exposing Hate in America." (That's a lot longer than "Generation KKK" but certainly better explains the premise.)

"In consultation with our partners at the ADL and Color Of Change, the network is changing the name of the show to ensure that no one can mistake its intent and that the title alone does not serve to normalize the Klan. The new title, 'Escaping the KKK: A Documentary Series Exposing Hate in America,' better reflects our longstanding intention and the content itself."

So they're trying to make it clear the doc was always about exposing hate, the title and initial announcement just never made that clear to all.

Variety noted that the series had been endorsed by civil rights leaders associated with the NAACP, the ADL, and Black Lives Matter, but criticism of the series, "driven largely by people who had not seen it" still grew online, based potentially on misunderstandings of the content. But others still struggle to believe the network behind reality series like "Duck Dynasty" can be trusted to make a credible documentary on the KKK.

Color of Change executive director Rashad Robinson said, in a statement (via Variety):

"After reviewing the promotions and episodes and participating in substantive conversations with A&E executives, we are pleased to see that the network is taking seriously concerns that the show — newly titled 'Escaping the KKK: A Documentary Series Exposing Hate in America' — required important additional components — such as specific in-show educational context and content and a post-show town hall as we both want to work together to ensure that it did not normalize and humanize racism and white supremacy."

As part of its partnerships with ADL and Color of Change, TVLine added, "Escaping the KKK" will feature in-show content provided by civil rights leaders giving more context to what viewers see in the series. A&E also plans to air a Town Hall-style show to facilitate deeper dialogue about ending hate in America.

The newly renamed "Escaping the KKK: A Documentary Series Exposing Hate in America" premieres Tuesday, Jan. 10 at 10 p.m. on A&E.

Ellen Pompeo applauded A&E's clarification, tweeting, "Thank U @aetv for caring enough to make changes 👏🏾👍🏾"

'Star Wars' Composer John Williams Has Never Seen Final Cuts of 'Star Wars' Movies

Posted:

Universal Studios' "Wizarding World of Harry Potter Opening" - Roaming InsideJohn Williams may have composed the iconic music of "Star Wars," but he's never actually seen the final versions of any of the movies.

"I have not looked at the 'Star Wars' films and that's absolutely true. When I'm finished with a film, I've been living with it, we've been dubbing it, recording to it, and so on. You walk out of the studio and, 'Ah, it's finished,'" he told the Mirror. "Now I don't have an impulse to go to the theater and look at it. Maybe some people find that weird, or listen to recordings of my music very, very rarely."

Of course, Williams watched the movies — and parts of it likely many times — as he was composing the music. He also watched the movie while the orchestra recorded the score. But it seems that he's never watched any of the finished "Star Wars" movies with his own music. Once he's done with a project, he moves onto the next.

As far as those "Star Wars" themes, Williams downplayed their status as classics.

"A lot of them are not very memorable and so on," he said, but adding, "It's probably the most popular music that I've done."

Michael Fassbender Reveals He Discussed Role in 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens'

Posted:

"Assassin's Creed" Mexico City - Photocall and Press ConferenceMichael Fassbender has done it all, from serious dramas like "12 Years a Slave" to superhero movies like "X-Men" to biopics like "Steve Jobs." Almost added to his resume: a "Star Wars" movie.

The actor revealed he discussed being part of "The Force Awakens" in an interview on the "Happy Sad Confused" podcast.

"We talked about a role. We had a conversation," he said, referring to director J.J. Abrams. "I'm pretty sure I was busy doing something else in the summer he was kickstarting that."

Fassbender didn't say which role he was up for. Perhaps he talked about playing dashing pilot Poe Dameron, which eventually went to Oscar Isaac. It's also easy to see him as the sinister General Hux, played by Domhnall Gleeson. Or it's also likely that his conversation with Abrams was a general one, before the script was even finalized.

Still, there's always the possibility of Fassbender traveling to a galaxy far, far away in the future, in later "Star Wars" episodes or standalone films.

'Justice League' Adds Lex Luthor and Wonder Woman's Mom

Posted:

The world of "Justice League" is expanding to feature two familiar DC Comics characters.

A Warner Bros. press kit for their 2017 movie slate confirms the cast list for the superhero team-up and it includes Jesse Eisenberg and Connie Nielsen. Eisenberg played Lex Luthor in "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," while Nielson will make her debut in next year's "Wonder Woman" as Hippolyta, queen of the Amazons on Themyscira and the mother of Diana Prince.

Lex Luthor's inclusion in "Justice League" is no surprise (and long rumored), since "Batman v Superman" ended with Lex repeating "the bell can't be unrung" — indicating his knowledge of some massive upcoming threat. A deleted scene shed more light by revealing Lex speaking to a vision of some sort of the villain Steppenwolf (rumored to be played by Ciaran Hinds). Perhaps Lex partners with his fellow villain to oppose the superhero team.

"Justice League" opens in theaters Nov. 17, 2017.

The first image from the upcoming "Baywatch" movie shows off a shirtless Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron, both looking beefed up, courtesy of Entertainment Weekly. The actors have been captured filming the film version of the cheesy '80s show on the beach by paparazzi, but this official photo depicts their lifeguard characters emerging from the ocean.

Baywatch (2017)Dwayne Johnson as Mitch Buchannon and Zac Efron as Matt BrodyJohnson and Efron appear to be strolling, but "Baywatch" fans can expect plenty of the slo-mo running that was the TV show's signature. And it'll be done with plenty of winks.

"The history of the show is to showcase beauty," director Seth Gordon told EW. "There's a beat where one of the characters sees someone running and asks, 'Is she running in slo-mo? And why is she wet but not that wet?' Stuff like that shows that we are in on the joke."

"Baywatch" opens in theaters May 26.

Miles Teller & Girlfriend Flip Truck in Scary Crash With Uber (UPDATE)

Posted:

US-ENTERTAINMENT-FILM-PREMIERE-BLEED FOR THISUPDATE: Miles Teller reacted to the "bad accident" via Twitter on Friday, Dec. 23:

Original post:

Actor Miles Teller reportedly had to be restrained from attacking an Uber driver after a serious car accident last night.

According to TMZ, the "Whiplash," "Bleed for This," and "Fantastic Four" star was driving his beloved truck in the San Fernando Valley when an Uber driver reportedly made a left turn when it was not safe and the vehicles collided. TMZ quoted a law enforcement source who said the accident was not Teller's fault.

Teller's Bronco flipped over, but he and his girlfriend, Keleigh Sperry, were reportedly not injured. However, Teller supposedly got out of the car and screamed "You f*cked up my truck" and was so angry at the Uber driver that he had to be restrained.

TMZ said an ambulance took two passengers in the Uber to the hospital, and a witness to the scene said Teller appeared concerned about the two injured people. So he wasn't just concerned about the truck.

Here's the truck in better days, in a photo from Sperry's Instagram:

Can't wait to take both of these babes up the coast 😍💯🚙

A photo posted by Keleigh Sperry (@keleigh_sperry) on

You can see it in less upright condition at TMZ. The site also noted the eerie connection that Teller's "Whiplash" and "Bleed for This" characters were also in car accidents. And when the actor was 20 he was in a near-fatal crash himself. As Teller, now 29, told ABC News of that crash, "My buddy lost control of my car going 80 mph. We flipped eight times. I got ejected out the window. The car landed and I was just laying like 50 feet from the car, unconscious, covered in blood. My buddy thought I was dead. [...] I got scars on my face. I still have two rocks in my face."

It's good to hear he was not hurt in this more recent accident; the two injured parties were said to have minor injuries, so they should be OK.

Amazon Offers Free First Season Streaming of 3 Originals This Holiday Week

Posted:

Heads up, here's some actual good news: You have one week left to try to enjoy 2016, and Amazon is ready to help. Amazon Prime Video is making the first seasons of three of its most popular original series available for free for one week. As they shared in a press release:

All Amazon customers in the U.S. (Prime and non-Prime) will be able to binge on the first seasons of "Bosch," "The Man in the High Castle," and "Mozart in the Jungle" starting today through Saturday December 31 11:59pm PST.

To start watching visit www.amazon.com/binge.

"The Man in the High Castle" just released Season 2, and "Mozart" just streamed Season 3, so Amazon is clearly aiming to hook newcomers on these first seasons so they subscribe for more. Tricksy hobbitses. It'll work, too.

Here are Amazon's synopses for each series:

"The Man in the High Castle"

Based on Philip K. Dick's Hugo Award-winning 1962 alternative history, the Emmy Award-winning Amazon Original Series The Man in the High Castle—currently in its second season—is one of Amazon's most watched original series.

The first seasons of the series considers the question of what would have happened if the Allied Powers had lost World War II. Almost 20 years after that loss, the United States and much of the world has now been split between Japan and Germany, the major hegemonic states. But the tension between these two powers is mounting, and this stress is playing out in the western U.S. Through a collection of characters in various states of posing (spies, sellers of falsified goods, others with secret identities). The hour-long dramatic pilot starred Alexa Davalos (Mob City) as Juliana Crain, Luke Kleintank (Pretty Little Liars) as Joe Blake, Rupert Evans (The Village) as Frank Frink, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa (Mortal Kombat Legacy) as Tagomi, Joel De La Fuente (Hemlock Grove) as Inspector Kido, Rufus Sewell (Eleventh Hour) as John Smith and DJ Qualls (Z Nation) as Ed McCarthy. Executive Producers include Ridley Scott (Blade Runner), David W. Zucker (The Good Wife) and Isa Dick Hackett, with co-executive Producers Jordan Sheehan of Scott Free Productions (The Good Wife, The Andromeda Strain), and Executive Producers Stewart Mackinnon and Christian Baute of Headline Pictures (The Invisible Woman).

"Mozart in the Jungle"

The multi-Golden Globe Award-winning series, Mozart in the Jungle—currently in its third season—is based on the critically-acclaimed memoir Mozart in the Jungle: Sex, Drugs & Classical Music by Blair Tindall. The series draws back the curtain at the New York Symphony, where artistic dedication and creativity collide with mind games, politicking and survival instincts. The series stars Gael García Bernal (Salt and Fire), who was awarded the Golden Globe award for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy Series, Lola Kirke (Gone Girl), Saffron Burrows (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), Malcolm McDowell (The Mentalist), Bernadette Peters (Smash), Hannah Dunne (Frances Ha) and Jason Schwartzman. It is Executive Produced by Roman Coppola (Moonrise Kingdom), Jason Schwartzman (The Darjeeling Limited) and Paul Weitz (About a Boy).

"Bosch"

Going into its third season in 2017, and already greenlit for a season four, the hit Emmy-nominated Amazon Original Series is based on Michael Connelly's best-selling novels, and stars Titus Welliver (Lost) as Detective Harry Bosch, Jamie Hector (The Wire) as Jerry Edgar, Amy Aquino (Being Human) as Lt. Grace Billets, Madison Lintz (The Walking Dead) as Maddie Bosch and Lance Reddick (The Wire) as Deputy Chief Irvin Irving.

The first season relentless LAPD homicide detective as he pursues the killer of a 13-year-old boy while standing trial in federal court on accusations that he murdered a suspected killer in cold blood. Guest stars on Bosch include Scott Wilson (The Walking Dead) as Dr. Guyot and Troy Evans (ER) as Detective Johnson, and was developed for television by Eric Overmyer (Treme, The Wire, Homicide: Life on the Streets) and Executive Produced by Overmyer, Connelly, and Henrik Bastin (The Killing, Burn Notice).

'Project Runway' Season 15 Fans Go Bananas Over Who Won

Posted:

"Project Runway" Season 15 continued the 2016 tradition of surprising people with things they should've seen coming.

Lifetime's 2016 season was probably decided somewhere in the first three weeks -- when Erin Robertson won two challenges and was at the top of a third -- but many fans are still upset that she won, especially since that banana design was her showcase finale look. The judges loved it, and it was very much Erin's aesthetic, but to many fans it was just ... bananas.

Granted, there are many Erin fans out there -- people who loved her the whole season, or who just thought her finale collection was superior to the other four contenders. Even some fans who really, really wanted Laurence Basse to win agreed with the judges that her finale collection had no "wow" moments or her usual strong signatures.

The finale came down to this ranking:

4th place: Rik Villa
3rd place: Laurence Basse
Runner up: Roberi Parra
Winner: Erin Robertson

Over at TVLine, when asked "Who SHOULD have won 'Project Runway' Season 15?" fans gave a slight edge to Laurence over Roberi (probably for her whole season of work rather than just her finale collection), then Erin and finally Rik. The comments are filled with fans lashing out at Erin, even if it's the judges who should take the heat from any frustrated fans. Erin did her job, and she was true to herself all season.

Some longtime viewers even compared the finale to the much-maligned Gretchen win over Mondo in Season 8, which left fans fuming and sent Mondo over to "All Stars" so he could at least win that show. (Gretchen led something of a group of bullies in Season 8, while Erin was not like that; Erin argued to Entertainment Weekly that editing didn't show how much she and Cornelius really got along.)

Here's a comment under Entertainment Weekly's Q&A with Erin:

This 15th season was a repeat of the Gretchen/Mondo finale. LIke the Gretchen/Mondo finale, this season's finale ended with a clunker. Does anyone remember Gretchen? Mondo, on the other hand, is doing quite well. I think Erin's "editorial" craftsy glue-gun looks will be so passe a year from now. Roberi was hands down the best designer in the group. Erin's looks were okay, but some of them were just plain awful. It's time to get a new crew of judges. Season 15 should be the last time we have to suffer through another season off Klum, Garcia, and Posen. Either that, or the show's producers should get these judges a new set of contact lenses since, clearly, their vision is compromised. Incroyable!

There are more anti-Erin comments in there, but also some support, like this:

Loved that they picked the true winner this season! Anyone else would have been a compromise to fashion sensibility. Erin's looks had that wow factor and none of the others had that. Roberi's was ok, but definitely not worthy of WINNING Project Runway. Ric's "collection" was so unattractive that I had to turn away from the screen every time I saw it. That denim stuff was like a project in summer camp where kids are given tubes of colored glue that they just scribbled onto the fabric. Ugly and unimaginative. He is the most delusional of all in that he had such a high opinion of himself. Always talking down Erin whose talent ran rings around his.

The positive takeaway is that fans still care deeply about this show, and who wins it, even after 15 seasons of evidence that winning usually does not mean much. (Christian Siriano is the most obvious exception.)

'Sherlock' Stars Martin Freeman & Amanda Abbington Split After 15 Years

Posted:

BRITAIN-ENTERTAINMENT-FILM-HOBBITNot John and Mary! Last year on "Sherlock," John Watson (Martin Freeman) and Mary (Amanda Abbington) got married, and Season 4 -- which starts Jan. 1 -- is meant to introduce their baby girl. But now they're breaking up the real-life family.

Maybe this split between co-stars Martin Freeman and Amanda Abbington -- after 15 years and two children together -- means that Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch) and John are finally getting together in Season 4. One of the teasers does feature Sherlock saying "I love you" to someone...

We joke because love is clearly dead and there's nothing else to do.

Freeman, who recently shared an awkward fan encounter at a urinal, shared even worse news with the Financial Times:

"I'm not with Amanda anymore. It's very, very amicable — I'll always love Amanda."

Abbington addressed the breakup on Twitter:

Freeman and Abbington have two children -- Joe, 10, and Grace, 8. They met in 2000 on the set of the U.K. TV movie "Men Only." Look at how cute they were together in 2006:

Confetti World Premiere - ArrivalsThey can still be seen together in "Sherlock," and they also co-starred in "The Debt" "The Robinsons," "Swinging with the Finkels," and "The All Together."

Sadly, the show must go on. Abbington recently shared that "Sherlock" Season 4 would be brutal but very funny and the whole company's favorite season to date. It begins January 1 at 9 p.m. on PBS.
