The 'Baywatch' Movie Gets New Release Date

Posted:

Change your beach plans: The "Baywatch" movie has a new opening day.

Paramount Pictures has pushed the upcoming movie adaptation of the "Baywatch" TV series back a week, giving it an opening weekend with less stiff competition. Instead of facing off against a host of sequels -- "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul," "Alien: Covenant," "The Nut Job 2," and "Annabelle 2" -- the action comedy will battle just one (at the time of publishing): the latest in the Pirates of the Caribbean series, "Dead Men Tell No Tales."

The new "Baywatch" opening will fall on Memorial Day weekend, giving moviegoers the chance to kick off summer with the latest group of lifeguards. Dwayne Johnson, Zac Efron, Alexandra Deddario, Kelly Rohrbach, Priyanka Chopra, Jon Bass, and Ilfenesh Hadera are all among the film's cast, and they will be responsible for carrying the baton of slow-motion running, dealing with complicated relationships, and saving the day.

"Baywatch" opens in theaters on May 26.

Tom Cruise Got 'Mummy' Director to Film Crash Scene in 'Vomit Comet' Plane

Posted:

'Jack Reacher: Never Go Back' Tokyo PremiereTom Cruise is clearly seriously dedicated his craft. Not only did he shoot scenes for his upcoming film "The Mummy" on a low-gravity airplane known as a "vomit comet," it was his idea in the first place.

Director Alex Kurtzman opened up about the action sequence during a recent event, reports Slash Film, and he had a lot to say about how they came to shoot scenes on one of the special planes, plus how it lived up to its unpleasant nickname.

Originally, Kurtzman intended to shoot the sequence in a more traditional way: using a rotisserie set, green-screen work, cables, and more. However, his film's star had other ideas. Cruise made the case for the vomit comet, setting them up for a wild ride. As Kurtman explained, the plane brings you up, "basically with the G's of a rocket going into space," evens out briefly, and then free-falls for 22 seconds -- only to do it all over again numerous times. That nickname makes sense now, doesn't it?

"We had grips holding lights and puking while the shot was going on," Kurtzman said. "I mean, it was the craziest experience ever and ultimately worth it."

Parts of the scene did still have to be shot using a rotisserie set, but they filmed the rest in the vomit comet. That meant that Kurtman, Cruise, and the crew had to spend two days working aboard the plane, taking four trips up and going weightless 16 times a flight. Needless to say, they had to have a lot of barf bags on hand, but in the end, it all worked out.

'Legion' Trailer: Dan Stevens Gets His World Rocked in FX's 'X-Men' Spinoff

Posted:

Finding out you're a mutant would be mind-boggling, to say the least, but it looks even more so for David Haller in the latest trailer for the "X-Men" spinoff series "Legion."

Starring "Downton Abbey" alum Dan Stevens, the show centers on David, the son of the comics' Charles Xavier (also known as Professor X). For years, David has been told that the voices and visions he experiences are because he is schizophrenic, but he gets a radical, new perspective. What doctors labeled a mental illness could actually be much more.

Not surprisingly, this new information is a lot for David to take in. The trailer shows how his world is upended as he grapples with what is and isn't true, and what it means for his fate and possibly that of the world.
The FX series is produced with Marvel Television and also stars Aubrey Plaza, Rachel Keller, Katie Aselton, Jean Smart, Jeremie Harris, Amber Midthunder, and Bill Irwin.

We're in for a trippy ride when "Legion" premieres Feb. 8 on FX.

'Westworld' Creators Explain Why We Have to Wait till 2018 for Season 2

Posted:

HBO's "Westworld" may bring viewers into a fantasy world, but we're still living in reality -- one in which we have to wait until 2018 for Season 2.

As hard as that may be for fans to hear, show creators Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan have their reasons for torturing us with the long break. In a recent interview with Variety, they explained why our wait for the next season of the sci-fi drama series will be longer than for most shows. Ultimately, it comes down to a desire to do Season 2 right.

While TV series usually juggle writing, shooting, and cutting at the same time, Joy and Nolan decided to switch it up. They knew early on that they wanted to write first, then head into production, and then cut, even if it would slow down the process.

"We started that conversation with the network when were shooting Episode 2 and we realized the complexity of trying to write and produce the show at the same time," Nolan told Variety.

Luckily, the network was supportive. "HBO has encouraged us to take the time and resources that we need to work on each stage of that," he said.

Another factor is that the upcoming season will be "ambitious," according to both Nolan and Joy. That's not hard to believe. Season 1 captivated viewers with its focus on a high-tech, Western amusement park where android "hosts" are used to play out visitors' fantasies, and Nolan and Joy seem ready to top it with Season 2.

"We've started working on scripts and outlines," Joy said. "It's looking good."

She also promised more "surprises and bits of it that you won't see coming," so "Westworld" Season 2 should be worth the wait, painful as it may be.

'Luke Cage' Renewed for Season 2 on Netflix

Posted:

After doubling down on its offering of original programming, Netflix will also be doubling down on "Luke Cage," too: The streaming service has renewed the Marvel series for a second season.

The news was announced on the show's social media accounts on Sunday, with a short video focusing on Pop's Barber Shop (a key setting in season one), and a neon sign in the window that says "Season 2: Coming soon." The announcement also included Pop's motto, "Always forward," an important mantra for the titular hero (played by Mike Colter) throughout the show's inaugural season.

It should come as no surprise that Netflix would want to stay in the "Luke Cage" business, considering the show's critical acclaim and warm reception from fans. The series was so in-demand during its debut weekend back in October that it temporarily crashed the streaming service.

The renewal also means that there will be more adventures in the Marvel deal that the comics powerhouse struck with Netflix, which will culminate in the "Defenders" team-up series featuring characters from "Daredevil," "Jessica Jones," "Luke Cage," and "Iron Fist." The latter series is set to debut sometime in early 2017.

No word yet on when fans can expect season two of "Luke Cage." Stay tuned.

WGA TV Nominations Hail 'Stranger Things,' 'This Is Us,' 'Westworld'

Posted:

The Writers Guild of America has released its nominations for the best television programming of 2016, and among the nominees are perennial favorites as well as plenty of new series that have gotten some major attention this year.

As has been the trend in recent years from many awards groups, cable and streaming programming dominated the WGA's slate of nominees, with only one broadcast show breaking into the guild's major categories. NBC's "This Is Us," a buzzy hit for the network, was the lucky selection, earning citations for Best Drama Series, Best New Series, and best writing for a single episode ("The Trip").

"Stranger Things," "Westworld," and "Atlanta" were three of the other biggest successes among the WGA's nominees, with each doubling up on nods in the best series and best new series categories. "Atlanta" also scored a nomination for writing for an individual episode ("Streets on Lock").

The complete list of nominees for television and new media is below. The Writers Guild Awards will be handed out at a ceremony on February 19, 2017.

Netflix Will Double Its Original Programming (Again) in 2017

Posted:

Gilmore GirlsNetflix is planning on significantly expanding its original programming offerings, with a projection to double its output of original series in 2017.

Ted Sarandos, the streaming platform's chief content officer, debuted the service's ambitious plans at the UBS Global Media & Communications Conference on Monday, telling the crowd that Netflix will soon offer approximately 1,000 hours of original programming content for subscribers -- more than double what it produced in 2016 -- adding that that benchmark was "a conservative measure right now." That push will include a $6 billion investment (in 2016, Netflix invested $5 billion in its original programming in a similar doubling-up strategy), and the streaming service hopes to eventually have 50 percent of its total offering be originals.

Unscripted programming will be Netflix's biggest focus in 2017, with the service planning about 20 new series in that category for the next calendar year. One of its splashiest new offerings will be reality competition series "Ultimate Beastmaster," which will have a global bent and feature "athletes and announcers from six different countries (the U.S., Brazil, South Korea, Mexico, Germany and Japan)," per Variety. Sylvester Stallone will produce that series, alongside "The Biggest Loser" executive producer Dave Broome.

Sarandos cited some of Netflix's recent successes -- including "Stranger Things," "Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life," and "The Crown" -- as proof of its capability of producing big, buzzy (and more importantly, financially successful) TV.

"What we try to do is take very measured swings for the fences, if that's possible," the exec said.

We'll see how those swings work out in 2017.

It's Official: Jimmy Kimmel Will Host the 2017 Oscars

Posted:

68th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards - Show
UPDATE:

After word broke on Monday afternoon that Jimmy Kimmel would be the next host of the Academy Awards, the emcee confirmed the news himself.

Kimmel took to Twitter to confirm an earlier report (which you can read in full below) that he has officially been tapped by the Academy to host film's biggest night. And in case anyone was wondering whether or not this was just another one of his elaborate pranks that he's become known for over the years, the host assured his followers that it was not.

"Yes, I am hosting the Oscars," Kimmel tweeted. "This is not a prank. And if it is, my revenge on @TheAcademy will be terrible & sweet."

This will be Kimmel's first time taking a crack at the Oscars, after hosting the Emmys twice (in 2012, and again this year). No word yet on how this will affect his traditional post-Oscars special on "Jimmy Kimmel Live," though we imagine he and ABC will have some convenient tie-ins ready to promote the show as Oscars Sunday approaches.

ORIGINAL REPORT:

After months of uncertainty over who will host the biggest celebration in Hollywood, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has reportedly settled on its pick, with Jimmy Kimmel set to emcee the Oscars in February.

The news comes from The Hollywood Reporter, which notes that an official announcement from the Academy and Oscars producers Michael De Luca and Jennifer Todd is forthcoming. Kimmel, who hosted the Emmys in September to almost universal acclaim, was ABC's top pick for the job, with execs publicly campaigning on his behalf.

It looks like that influence worked, and as THR notes, that sway is part of a new deal between the Academy and ABC -- the Oscars' longtime broadcaster -- that gives the network more of a say in who is selected for the high-profile gig. The ultimate decision is still the Academy's, however.

Perhaps those new negotiations are why it took so long for the telecast to secure a host. In years past, the Oscars emcee has had many months to prepare for the high-pressure job; now, Kimmel, De Luca, and Todd will have just over 11 weeks to craft the show.

Considering Kimmel has presided over his eponymous late-night show for more than a decade, though, he's no doubt used to writing under pressure, and his successful Emmys hosting stints (both this year and back in 2012) prove he's more than capable of steering a live awards telecast. We'll see him in action when the Oscars air on ABC on Sunday, February 26, 2017.

Ed Harris Didn't Really Get the 'Westworld' Maze Reveal Either

Posted:

"Westworld" Season 1 just ended, and it sounds like Ed Harris feels the same way we do. It was amazing ... but we still have a million questions. If only Arnold had created mazes for the humans who watch this show, guiding our conscious minds to enlightenment. 'Cause right now, our motor functions are stuck in this loop:Harris, who plays the Man in Black -- also confirmed in last night's finale as the older/contemporary version of William -- talked to Entertainment Weekly after Season 1, Episode 10, "The Bicameral Mind."

His character was obsessed with finding the maze, although he was warned that the maze was "not for you." That just made it sound all the more tantalizing, but also all the more disappointing when the maze turned out to be a test by Arnold to help hosts like Dolores reach consciousness -- leading her on a winding path inward until she found her own voice in her head as a final step of self-awareness.

The maze really wasn't for humans. It was also, on a more literal level, just a toy. Here's Harris's reaction to the maze:

EW: What was your reaction to the maze being revealed to be a toy? I suspect it was not that much different than your character's reaction.

Ed Harris: Yeah. Basically: "What is this sh–? What is going on here?" Yeah. I gotta tell you, I'm still not quite clear on what the maze was supposed to have represented. But the fact that it didn't really mean anything, or didn't exist ... I haven't penetrated that. But I haven't seen the finale yet.

At least he's honest.

In terms of what's next, Harris said the showrunners told him they're doing 10 episodes again in Season 2, but they "[p]robably won't start shooting until June or July. They sound pretty excited about what it's about. But I have no idea what it will encompass." Asked to speculate on what will happen, now that the hosts's revolution has begun, Harris said, "I don't know, but it sure seems like there's going to be an awful lot of violence. I think all hell's going to break loose. I don't know if I join forces with the hosts, or what. But I'm happy for [showrunners] Jonah [Nolan] and Lisa [Joy]. This has been something they've been working on for a long time. They have very specific plans for Season 2. I think they're gonna spend more time in Utah next season — they were there for two weeks last season, next season will be a month. They've done a great job. And it's nice to be in a hit."

Before the Season 1 finale aired, Evan Rachel Wood (Dolores) teased the show's return in a talk with IndieWire:

"No one's more excited than me to come back — I guarantee it! That's the only clue I'm going to give you." Actually, she did add, "I know a little about what's coming in Season 2. I know how our ending for Season 1 will segue into Season 2 and... wow. [laughs] That's all I can say. I think it was always that Season 1 was going to be this backstory and set up — getting to know the park and characters. I think Season 2 is really going to be warp speed. The show might really start in Season 2."

We can't wait! But HBO seriously needs to carve out at least a half an hour after each episode of "Westworld" Season 2 to explain things to the class. If AMC can give fans "Talking Dead," HBO can do it for the one show on TV that really needs it the most.

Tom Cruise Pulls a Jon Snow in 'The Mummy' Trailer, So Is He a Mummy?

Posted:

Tom Cruise's character dies and comes back to life right in the trailer for the 2017 movie "The Mummy." It seems like a giant spoiler, but apparently it's only the beginning. But does that mean Cruise plays a Mummy in "The Mummy"?

It's a question Entertainment Weekly asked the director after the new trailer dropped. But, based on the knee-jerk fan reaction, the real question is "Where's Brendan Fraser?" (The short answer is "You can see him on 'The Affair.'")

Brendan Fraser starred as Rick O'Connell in "The Mummy" (1999), "The Mummy Returns" (2001), and "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" (2008). However, the first movie on "The Mummy" came out in 1932, so no one can really claim originality here. This new Mummy with Tom Cruise also stars "Star Trek Beyond" actress Sofia Boutella as the first woman in the titular role.

Entertainment Weekly asked Alex Kurtzman about what it means to show Cruise's character die then come back to life in the trailer. "Is Tom Cruise a Mummy in this movie? Or is that the visual iconography you were trying to create with that moment?"

Here's the director's answer:

There's an origin story happening on two different fronts. I won't tell you too much more than that, other than to say: One of the things that I think has defined Tom Cruise movies, for 30 years, is that Tom Cruise always saves the day. You know whenever you're in a Tom Cruise movie that he's gonna figure out a way to save the day. And that's great, and it's why I pay my money to see his movies. However, in the context of a monster movie, it's challenging, because monster movies are about characters who are often very out of control, and don't know how to save the day. The first thing I said to Tom was, "It'll be scarier if we can take away the fundamental knowledge that you're gonna solve the problem."

In the trailer, when he comes back to life, suddenly he's in a situation where he has no idea what's happening. It removes safety of: "He knows what he's doing." Once you remove that, and anything is possible, the movie can actually free itself up to be scary. The ending of a more traditional movie would probably be the ending of our first act.

Watch the trailer:Man, Tom Cruise really loves those plane stunt scenes -- "Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation," "Edge of Tomorrow," "Top Gun" -- he may even love them as much as his running shots.

"The Mummy" is scheduled for release June 9, 2017.

'Stranger Things' May Have Influenced Baby Names in 2016

Posted:

The Stork delivered thousands of adorable little demogorgons in 2016, and the debut of "Stranger Things" may have inspired some of their names. However, the boosted names do not seem to include "Eleven" or "Barb." Justice denied, once again!

Instead, Good Housekeeping noted these interesting pop culture influences from the 2016 BabyCenter list:

"Netflix's 'Stranger Things' gave Nancy a 46% increase, while other characters from the summer's runaway hit like Dustin (up 32%) and Lucas (up 25%) got a big boost too.

Politics also inspired parents this year, making the name Hillary 64% more popular. Donald was also up this year with a 5% increase, while the name of the president elect's daughter, Ivanka, rose 39% as well."

You probably can't give "Stranger Things" much credit for a Lucas boost. That name was already pretty popular. But Nancy? That's probable. Good on ya, Nancy Wheeler! It pays to be the "real heroine" of "Stranger Things."Also, props to Hillary for at least winning the baby name game over Trump. It's not much, but...

Most of those names (except for Lucas) still aren't among the top picks, which were calculated from 400,000 parents who shared their newborn's name with BabyCenter in 2016. Here are the top names for each gender:

MOST POPULAR GIRLS NAMES

  • Sophia
  • Emma
  • Olivia
  • Ava
  • Mia

As GH noted, this is not the official U.S. government list -- that list doesn't combine similar names that are spelled differently, like Sophia/Sofia -- and it will be released in early 2017. But it's an early look at how trends affected the children born in 2016.

Meanwhile, "Stranger Things" Season 2 is now filming for release on Netflix in 2017. Any chance "Hopper" might make the baby list at some point, in honor of the chief?

Jennifer Aniston Visits 'SNL' to Slam Rachel From 'Friends' Impression

Posted:

The real Rachel from "Friends" just called out the fake Rachel from "Friends" of "Saturday Night Live," and the result was ... well, uh, you know, well, it's, it's, it's, uh, yeah, good.

Vanessa Bayer revived her "Rachel From 'Friends'" impression on Weekend Update for a segment on '90s nostalgia, and she was visited by "Friends" alum Jennifer Aniston, who also co-stars with Bayer in the upcoming movie "Christmas Office Party." Aniston basically confronted Bayer on being her stalker, and argued that the SNL-er's Rachel impression isn't exactly "a great bit."

Jennifer Aniston: "Listen, honey, I know that you love 'Friends.' And we had such a great time making our movie together, but you've got to really try to stop texting me every day."

Vanessa Bayer: "I know. I just texted you 'cause I thought we could hang. 'Cause I think you're like the best."

Aniston: "That's so sweet, honey, and you are too. But 'Friends' was like 5 million and 5 years ago. So I think we've just got to move on."

Bayer: "Well, I don't know. I just thought, since I do this great bit as Rachel, so..."

Aniston: "Is it a great bit, though? It kind of just sounds like all you're doing is, like, 'Oh, what?! Oh, me? Oh, wow. No!'"

Their dueling Rachel impressions include Aniston shouting in exasperation, "No, I don't do that!" and both Rachels sighing "Oh, Ross."

Watch the Rachel reunion:Aniston was in another sketch that night, with the show's actual host Emma Stone, plus Sasheer Zamata, Leslie Jones, and Kate McKinnon stealing every scene (again) as Old Hollywood star Debette Goldry:Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook.

'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2' Trailer Hands Universe to Baby Groot

Posted:

Question: Is the best part of the new "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" trailer 1) every shot of Baby Groot or 2) Drax's laughter at Star-Lord's embarrassment? "Do me! Do me! Do me!"

The first full trailer for Marvel's "Guardians" sequel may have humiliated Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) in front of Gamora (Zoe Saldana), but director James Gunn should be very proud of it.

Watch the trailer:The trailer gives a strong showing to Drax (Dave Bautista), Star-Lord/Peter Quill, Baby Groot (Vin Diesel) and Rocket (Bradley Cooper), with brief shots of Gamora, and the debut of Mantis (Pom Klementieff), with the new character revealing Star-Lord's "deepest darkest secret" (or at least his "sexual love" for Gamora) in front of Gamora and Drax. And, of course, the song in the trailer, "Fox on the Run," shot to number one once the trailer dropped.

UPDATE: On Monday, Gunn updated that the trailer broke a record for Marvel teasers, and took second to the new "Beauty and the Beast" teaser, despite being released on a Saturday:Congrats! "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" is scheduled for release May 5th, 2017.

Here's Why 'Moana' Will Rule the Box Office... Until 'Rogue One'

Posted:

Maybe you prefer your Thanksgiving dinner carved from the turkey breast or thigh. But at the movie theater in the weekends after Thanksgiving, it's all about the legs.

Traditionally, the end of November/beginning of December at the multiplex is a quiet period. It certainly seemed so this weekend, with "Moana" staying at the top of the chart for a second week -- and only one new wide release, horror film "Incarnate," opening in dismal ninth place.
Still, the long legs, the holding power that "Moana" and other November movies are showing, is impressive. The Disney cartoon may not have faced any serious challenges this week, but together, these movies are selling just enough to keep 2016 some four percent ahead of last year at the same time. The box office may be in a holding pattern until "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" blasts off into hyperdrive on Dec. 16, but for now, sub-light speed is just fine for everyone, thanks.

Typically after Thanksgiving, whatever Disney movie happens to be on top slides about 55 percent. "Moana," however, lost just 50 percent, coming in at an estimated $28.4 million in its second weekend. That's a stronger hold than any of Disney's recent Thanksgiving cartoons, including "Tangled," "The Good Dinosaur," and even "Frozen."

With its appeal to both adults and kids, "Moana" is unbeatable right now. "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" is actually playing on more screens (3,988 to 3,875), but it's in its third week, so it mustered up just an estimated $18.5 million, good for second place. Still, that's enough to bring its three-week domestic total to $183.5 million. Overseas, it's done twice as well, leading to a global total of $607.9 million. Never underestimate the wizardly power of J.K. Rowling to sell movie tickets worldwide.
Two films appealing primarily to adults are holding on surprisingly well. Brainy alien-visitors drama "Arrival" actually added 473 theaters in its fourth weekend (for a total of 2,915) and was rewarded with an additional $7.3 million (down just a modest 36 percent from last week) and third place.

To date, "Arrival," which cost a reported $47 million to make, has earned $73.1 million in America and a total of $105.2 million across planet Earth.

Meanwhile, World War II drama "Allied" also fell less than 50 percent (44.5 percent, to be exact) from its debut a week ago, finishing fourth with an estimated $7.1 million. That middling reviews haven't hurt this movie much among its target audience (of people old enough to still care what critics think) is a testament to Brad Pitt's star power, or at least to prurient tabloid interest in him.

Rounding out the top five, "Doctor Strange," in its fifth weekend, still managed to conjure up an estimated $6.5 million. With a domestic total to date of $215.3 million, it's one of two current movies that are already in the Top 10 for the whole year so far. ("Fantastic Beasts" is the other.)

Compared to the top five, "Incarnate" may not look like much. The exorcism thriller opened on 1,737 screens and scared up an estimated $2.7 million. That's well below the already modest $4 million that pundits had predicted. Apparently, the film was following in the example of 2015's "Krampus," which picked this same unlikely holiday-season weekend last year to open and stuffed its stocking with $16.3 million. But that film had a Christmas theme, more obvious youth appeal (unlike "Incarnate," whose stars are middle-aged Carice van Houten and Aaron Eckhart), and a tongue-in-cheek tone. Given those deficits, along with poor word-of-mouth (measured by a horrific C- grade at CinemaScore) and "Incarnate" not being screened for critics, it's no wonder "Incarnate" didn't come close to matching the debut of "Krampus."

The absence of a new sleeper hit like "Krampus" kept this weekend's total box office about three percent below that of the same weekend last year. Still, total domestic earnings for the year to date stand at $10.3 billion, marking the first time that the figure has crossed the $10 billion mark by this time of year. Last year's record haul was only $9.9 billion at this time, though there was still a "Star Wars" movie yet to be released.

Even if this year's "Star Wars" installment doesn't approach the monster success of last year's "The Force Awakens," 2016 is still four percent ahead of last year and on track to become Hollywood's biggest year to date. For that, the studios can thank pluggers like "Arrival" and "Allied" for inching the 2016 total closer to that record, one ticket at a time.

"Mozart in the Jungle" Season 3 (Amazon Original)Gael Garcia Bernal's Golden Globe and Emmy-winning dramedy returns December 9. Meanwhile Hailey (Lola Kirke) unsuccessfully tours Europe and begins to question her career as an oboist."

"The Walking Dead" Season 7 (Sunday on AMC at 9 p.m.)
TWD has not been at its strongest so far in Season 7, but the AMC series traditionally has standout midseason finales, so cross your fingers and hope for the best from Episode 8, "Hearts Still Beating." Here's the synopsis: "Negan's unwelcome visit to Alexandria continues as other members scavenge for supplies; things quickly spin out of control." That will be the last episode of 2016, with Season 7B starting in February 2017. The second half of the season is meant to be verrry different from the first, which can only mean actual light is at the end of this dark tunnel.

13 Things You Didn't Know About 'Ocean's 11'

Posted:

Back in 1960, when Peter Lawford pitched him the Vegas heist script for the original "Ocean's 11," Frank Sinatra reportedly joked, "Forget the movie, let's pull the job."

Indeed, the original Rat Pack romp was so slight that news regarding its remake was met with a collective shrug. But the 2001 "Ocean's 11," released 15 years ago this week (on December 7, 2001), proved way more lucrative than the actual heist would have. It spawned the biggest hit of director Steven Soderbergh's career, a three-film franchise, and a new Rat Pack of sorts that crowned George Clooney, Julia Roberts, Brad Pitt, and Matt Damon as Hollywood's new aristocracy. Here are the secrets of how this unlikely caper came together.
1. Did anyone in 2001 even remember the original "Ocean's 11," a crime comedy notable more for its marquee casting than for what happened on screen? Remake producer Clooney didn't think so.

"The truth is, most people never saw the original 'Ocean's 11,'" he said. "They just think they have because those guys were the coolest. Nobody touches Frank and Sammy and Dean, and we won't ever be that cool. But we do have a really great story."

2. Still, Clooney and Soderbergh wanted to assemble a similar all-star cast, and after the double-whammy year Soderbergh had in 2000 (releasing both "Erin Brockovich" and "Traffic" and winning a Best Director Oscar for the latter), he had the clout to get most of the names he wanted. Nonetheless, Johnny Depp and Mark Wahlberg eluded him for the role that ultimately went to Matt Damon.
3. Instead of original choices Alan Arkin and Danny Glover, the director got Carl Reiner and Bernie Mac. For the gearhead brothers, he considered Owen and Luke Wilson (too busy making "The Royal Tenenbaums" with Glover). He also considered non-thespians Joel and Ethan Coen before going with Scott Caan and Casey Affleck.

4. Part of the challenge was to get all those A-listers to cut their usual salaries in order to fit so many of them into the cast. Clooney cut his own pay first. Recruiting recent "Brockovich" Oscar winner Julia Roberts, who at the time earned $20 million per movie, Clooney sent her a script with a note reading, "I hear you're getting 20 a picture now." Attached was a $20 bill.
5. Roberts signed on, despite her apprehensions about being the only woman among a cast of mischievous fratboys led by Clooney. "I felt like the tomboy sister with all these motley brothers," she said. "It does make you paranoid when you walk into your room every night thinking, 'What has been booby-trapped?'"

6. One actor who came cheap: Soderbergh himself, who had a cameo as one of the dimwitted safecrackers whom Basher Tarr (Don Cheadle) chews out.
7. By the way, if you hate Cheadle's cockney accent as Basher, the actor sympathizes with you and agrees that his voice work is "truly terrible" in the "Ocean's" trilogy. "I really worked on that accent," he recalled. "I went to London and I spoke to people. I thought I got to know it, but it turns out I couldn't get it." Before making "Ocean's Twelve," he said, "I wanted to change it, but my agent said no. So I'm stuck with this thing and everyone laughs at me."

8. Brad Pitt's character is shown eating in nearly every scene, a character tic that led to a noticeable continuity error. During a sequence where he's gobbling shrimp cocktail out of a goblet, as the camera cuts away from him and returns, the goblet turns into a plate, then back into a goblet. Apparently, the scene required so many takes that Pitt had to scarf down 40 shrimp before Soderbergh was satisfied.
9. When Clooney and Pitt's characters mull over the manpower they'll need to pull off the complex robbery, the latter says, "Off the top of my head, I'd say you're looking at a Boesky, a Jim Brown, a Miss Daisy, two Jethros and a Leon Spinks, not to mention the biggest Ella Fitzgerald ever." What did all those references mean?

As the movie progresses, it appears that "Boesky," as in Wall Street fraudster Ivan Boesky, is a reference to Reiner's con man Saul. "Jim Brown" (as in the "Dirty Dozen" star) seems to mean the aggressive distraction provided by blacklisted blackjack dealer Bernie Mac. "Miss Daisy" is apparently the getaway vehicle. The "two Jethros" are the yokel mechanics played by Caan and Affleck. "Leon Spinks" refers to the boxing match upset. And "Ella Fitzgerald" has to do with the videotaped heist passed off as the real thing, a reference to the legendary jazz singer's popular audio cassette commercials in the 1970s, in which a recording of belting a high note proves vivid enough to shatter a glass, prompting the slogan, "Is it live, or is it Memorex?

10. A key plot element is the "pinch," a device stolen from a physics lab that creates an electromagnetic pulse strong enough to black out Las Vegas for nearly a minute. "In fact, a pinch really does exist," production designer Phil Messina noted. "It's essentially a particle accelerator and is used to send out an electromagnetic pulse."

Messina's team tried to make the movie's pitch authentic. "We contacted scientists on the Internet and found people who worked with these particle accelerators. We went into chat rooms and basically posed design questions. Then our property master visited a lab in Northern California that had a pinch and he brought back photographs and diagrams." Unlike in the movie, however, a pinch is too big to fit in a van, it uses too much electricity to be powered by a string of car batteries, and its electromagnetic pulse is too weak to shut down power outside of a radius of a few feet. In fact, the only electromagnetic event that would create a pulse strong enough to shut down a city's power grid is a nuclear explosion.

11. "Ocean's 11" was one of the first films that needed a re-edit because of the then-recent 9/11 attacks. In the initial edit, developers demolish the New York, New York casino (with its hotel built to resemble the towers of the Manhattan skyline) in a huge CGI explosion. Now, however, blowing up New York skyscrapers wasn't going to play well, so the demolished hotel became the fictional Xanadu.
12. The movie was shot at the actual Bellagio casino, so during their downtime, the stars played the tables. Damon claims he saw Clooney lose 25 straight hands of blackjack. Worse, the "Rounders" star says he had to cover the leading man's losses when the dealer wouldn't take an IOU.

13. Clooney's penny-pinching with A-listers' salaries kept the budget down to a reported $85 million. "Ocean's" earned back $183 million in domestic ticket sales and a worldwide total box office of $451 million.
