Amy Schumer Responds to Critics of Her Grammy Nods & 'Barbie' Casting

Posted:

Amy Schumer at 'Good Morning America' in NYCAmy Schumer feels sorry for the trolls out there "who are in more pain than we will ever understand." She also thanked them for making it clear with their comments that she was a good choice for her two Grammy nominations and new "Barbie" movie.

Yep, she's going for a Kill Them With Patronizing Kindness approach!

Schumer is a magnet for both praise and criticism, but like many people on social media, she tends to have the strongest reaction to the criticism. She was just nominated for two Grammys -- one for Best Spoken Word album for "The Girl With the Lower Back Tattoo," and the other for Best Comedy Album for "Live At the Apollo" -- and she's currently in talks to play the lead and co-write the script for a live-action "Barbie" movie.

In an inspiring new Instagram post, she thanked her supporters for their positive responses, and dismissed the "trolls" who insist on letting her know that they don't think she's attractive or funny:

"Very very honored to be nominated for 2 Grammys and to be considered to play an important and evolving icon. Is it fat shaming if you know you're not fat and have zero shame in your game? I don't think so. I am strong and proud of how I live my life and say what I mean and fight for what I believe in and I have a blast doing it with the people I love. Where's the shame? It's not there. It's an illusion. When I look in the mirror I know who I am. Im a great friend, sister, daughter and girlfriend. I'm a badass comic headlining arenas all over the world and making tv and movies and writing books where I lay it all out there and I'm fearless like you can be. Thanks to everyone for the kind words and support and again my deepest sympathy goes out to the trolls who are in more pain than we will ever understand. I want to thank them for making it so evident that I am a great choice. It's that kind of response that let's you know something's wrong with our culture and we all need to work together to change it. Anyone who has ever been bullied or felt bad about yourself I am out there fighting for you, for us. And I want you to fight for yourself too! We need to laugh at the haters and sympathize with them. They can scream as loud as they want. We can't hear them because we are getting sh*t done. I am proud to lead by example. 'I say if I'm beautiful, I say if I'm strong. You will not determine my story. I will' #thegirlwiththelowerbacktattoo"

Her post has earned a lot of positive feedback, so hopefully she sees that her fans have her back and appreciate that she is leading by example. No one should be holding out for universal popularity -- heck, even Betty White probably has a "hater" out there -- and some criticism is worth considering for its merits. But, you should never let it crowd out the praise.

Is 'The Walking Dead' Season 7's Sad Ratings Drop Finally Over?

Posted:

"The Walking Dead" Season 7 just stopped falling from its high ratings cliff, but around seven million people are still missing. They were last seen watching the Season 7 premiere, helping it reach the near-record high of 17 million viewers. Since that proud moment, TWD has only managed to make headlines for its sharp fall, with everyone and their second cousin espousing theories on why the show is now at 2012 levels.

Here are the Sunday night viewer and ratings numbers for Season 7 so far (via TV by the Numbers):

Episode 1: 17.03 million, 8.4 rating (18-49)
Episode 2: 12.46 million, 6.1
Episode 3: 11.72 million, 5.7
Episode 4: 11.40 million, 5.4
Episode 5: 11 million, 5.2
Episode 6: 10.40 million, 4.9
Episode 7: 10.48 million, 4.9

As you can see, the long drop stopped with the December 4 Episode 7 -- although barely -- and it's possible Episode 6's 10.40 was rock bottom. Since the Episode 8 midseason finale airs this Sunday, December 11, the ratings should tick up a bit; that would be welcome news, since 4.9 is the lowest rating since Season 3 in November 2012. (The ratings are usually high for season premieres, midseason finales, midseason premieres, and season finales, with dips during the middle of each half-season.)

TWD still has the kind of viewer and ratings numbers other shows only dream of. But still. Why is TWD struggling to retain its fan base?

A few fans, apparently more than a few, quit after the extra bleak premiere. Some viewers initially blamed the World Series and other competition for the ratings drop, but the World Series has been over for weeks now and there has been no rush to return. We wondered if HBO's "Westworld" was taking some viewers, and that may be true -- but "Westworld" Season 1 just ended last Sunday, with its own record high to date, so it won't be a factor in this Sunday's midseason finale ratings. The overall drop seems to be from quality, and even some loyal TWD fans who are still watching every week have voiced complaints about weak sections and pacing issues. But the first half of the season is almost over, and it's possible Season 7B will turn everything around.

Season 7, Episode 8, "Hearts Still Beating," airs Sunday, December 11 from 9 to 10:26 p.m. ET on AMC.

Will Smith Updates on 'Bad Boys 3': 'It Is Very Close'

Posted:

"Bad Boys 3" is becoming the new "Groundhog Day." Every few months, we'll get a new tease. Each tease is nearly identical to the last one, promising that the third movie is really going to happen. This has been going on for years, and each time the stars say the movie is coming soon, it feels like they're just perfecting the promise, until one day we'll wake up and the movie will magically appear.

"It is very, very, very close," Will Smith told Jimmy Kimmel on last night's show. "It is very close. It is very close."

Smith didn't get a chance to explain what in heaven's name is taking so long, since he was on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" to talk about his new movie "Collateral Beauty" and Kimmel only saved about 20 seconds to talk about "Bad Boys 3." (And Kimmel used those seconds to do most of the talking himself.)

Kimmel mentioned that Martin Lawrence had been on his show in October and said they'd "maybe" start production on "Bad Boys 3" in March 2017. The audience cheered when Kimmel brought that up, but it sounds like it was more hope than reality. Smith didn't confirm March, he just said the movie was "close," and expressed his affection for Martin Lawrence. "Let me tell you, I love that dude. One of the best times I've ever had making movies, so I'm looking forward [to the new movie]."

The first "Bad Boys" movie came out in 1995, followed by "Bad Boys II" in 2003. Back in August, it was revealed that the third movie had a title, if nothing else: "Bad Boys For Life," borrowing its name from a line from Smith to Lawrence in the second film. The third film also has a new release date -- January 12, 2018, rescheduled from the previous date of February 17, 2017. No idea if January 2018 is still the plan, but there's also still supposedly a "Bad Boys 4" scheduled for 2019.

"We do one a decade," Smith joked to Kimmel, who in turn joked that they'll eventually get to "Bad Old Men." Let's just hope fans live to see it happen.

These 'Star Wars' GIFs Show How 5 Main Characters Aged Through Saga

Posted:

It's hard to say which "Star Wars" character has changed the most over the course of the Saga to date, but it's safe to say it's not C-3PO.

We first met the "Star Wars" cast a long time ago (1977-1983) in a galaxy far, far away (Episodes IV-VI). But it's now canon to consider the prequels -- the 1999-2005 Episodes I-III -- as the chronological beginning of the Saga, which is now continuing with the sequels -- 2015-2019 Episodes VII-IX.

The Star Wars galaxy is always transporting fans through time, and on December 16, "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" is taking us to the gap between Episode III and Episode IV, to show how Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) and allies stole the plans for the Death Star that our OG heroes had to destroy in the original trilogy. In honor of "Rogue One" -- and its focus on hacking intel about the Death Star -- the Internet security and hacking news site securethoughts.com created these GIFs showing five main "Star Wars" characters morphing through time:

• Luke Skywalker, played by Mark Hamill from Episode IV, "A New Hope," through last year's Episode VII, "The Force Awakens."

• Obi-Wan Kenobi, played by Ewan McGregor in the three prequels, then Alec Guinness in "Star Wars":

• Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader, played by Jake Lloyd in Episode I, "The Phantom Menace"; then Hayden Christensen in Episode II, "Attack of the Clones" and Episode III, "Revenge of the Sith"; followed by David Prowse in "Return of the Jedi":

• Princess/General Leia, played by Carrie Fisher in Episodes IV-VII:

• Han Solo, played by Harrison Ford in Episodes IV-VII:

Luke and Leia are expected to return in Episode VIII, which is scheduled for release on December 15, 2017. Han Solo is getting his own "Rogue One"-style standalone film, with Alden Ehrenreich playing the younger version. So maybe someday the Han GIF can be updated for him, placing the younger version first. There's also talk of Obi-Wan returning for the next two Saga films, and potentially getting his own solo film, so his transformation may need a lot of updating in the next few years.

'Gilmore Girls' Revival Cut This Big Scene After Netflix 'Took Money Away'

Posted:

Pop quiz, hot shot: If you had to pick one sequence from Netflix's "Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life" to cut short, what would it be? The Stars Hollow musical? Life and Death Brigade? Return to Chilton? "Wild" hiking trip? Luke and Lorelai's big wedding?

Would you really have picked the "big wedding"? 'Cause that's what got chopped.

They say necessity is the mother of invention, and when Netflix made it necessary for the "Gilmore Girls" revival producers to rethink their epic wedding plans, Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino invented a brilliant solution. It may even qualify as a blessing in disguise. (But don't tell Netflix that or they'll cut everyone's budgets.)

"The wedding was originally a much bigger deal," Sherman-Palladino told TVLine. "The wedding was a whole shebang. And then they took money away from us. Anything that has extras in it and costumes became a production nightmare. So we had to figure out how to make this wedding satisfying without doing 'The Big Wedding.'"

However, she allowed that maybe the "intimate" wedding was better anyway. "In paring all of the bells and whistles away, we get down to the crux of really what it is: It's Luke, Lorelai and Rory. And that made it intimate and gave it more feeling."

Agreed. It was surprising to watch "Fall" play out and not see the big wedding, but it turned out to look and feel just about right. That said, it would've been cool to follow that perfectly intimate wedding with a big Stars Hollow event, with the entire cast from Sookie and Michel to Paris and Jess. They could've cut the musical for that.

Where Do 'Star Wars,' 'Game of Thrones,' and More Rank Among Best Fandoms?

Posted:

There's no magic mirror to find out which fandom is the fairest of them all, but there is something better: a massive list.

Time Inc.'s website FanSided has released the full Fandom 250, what it calls "the ultimate ranking of fandoms." As the title indicates, there are 250 fandoms on the list, and they range from sports to films to brands and beyond. With the full list now unveiled, we got to see where some of our favorite movie and TV series fell.

Not surprisingly, "Star Wars" got its due. After being reinvigorated by "The Force Awakens" last year, the franchise was the top-ranked movie or TV show, coming in at No. 2 overall. Meanwhile, HBO's fantasy drama "Game of Thrones" followed not far behind, securing fourth place. The rest of the top five was filled out by the Word Series-winning Chicago Cubs, who placed first; Beyonce at third; and the Dallas Cowboys at fifth.

A few more movie- and TV-related fandoms cracked the top 10, too. Netflix managed to score the No. 6 spot, "The Walking Dead" came in at seventh, and "Harry Potter"-slash-J.K. Rowling scored 10th place. So many fandoms, so little time.

'Big Little Lies' Trailer: Moms Start Talking Murder

Posted:

A group of moms is getting dangerous.

HBO recently released the official "Big Little Lies," and the limited series looks like a dark one. Starring Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, and Shailene Woodley as a trio of mothers whose kids go to the same school, the show follows them as their lives unravel. The preview makes no secret that something bad is coming: murder.

Although we know the crime will be committed, there are still many, many questions to be answered, such as who is behind the murder and why. The preview introduces some of those possibly involved, using both scenes of their lives and what appear to be interviews with those who know them.

"Jane just didn't fit here," says one woman of Woodley's character, for example. "Kind of like a dirty, old Prius parked outside of Barneys." Harsh.

With its all-star cast and compelling plot, based on the best-selling novel by Liane Moriarty, HBO could have another winner on its hands. Check out the trailer below.
"Big Little Lies" premieres Feb. 19 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO.

'Libby & Malcolm': ABC Orders Pilot About a Politically Divided Family

Posted:

2016 Performers Nominee Reception presented by the Television Academy - Reception"Divided" may very well be the word most frequently used to describe U.S. politics these days, so ABC's first pilot order of the 2017-2018 season is fitting.

The network has ordered "Libby & Malcolm," a comedy starring Felicity Huffman and Courtney B. Vance as newlywed political pundits, reports Variety. Interestingly, the couple will have opposing beliefs, with Libby (Huffman) being a Republican and Malcolm (Vance) a liberal. In the pilot, they'll be settling into life together and -- as if that weren't enough -- working on a new political talk show in which they routinely face off. Opposites attract ... and team up, apparently.

The talented actors come to the project having each earned accolades with a recent crime drama series. Huffman starred in "American Crime," while Vance had a lead role in "The People v. O.J. Simpson: An American Crime Story." Although the "Libby & Malcolm" pilot should be much more lighthearted, it could certainly tackle some of the same issues, like race, class, and gender, among others.

Whatever topics the potential series takes on, we expect them to be done well and with a lot of laughs, especially given that it comes from "Black-ish" creator Kenya Barris and Vijal Patel. We'll have to wait and see if "Libby and Malcolm" gets a series order, but right now, it has our vote. Who knows? It could be just what the country needs.

'Suicide Squad' Honest Trailer: 'This Thing Is Writing Itself'

Posted:

There was no way a film as high-profile as "Suicide Squad" was going to avoid an Honest Trailer for long.

Screen Junkies released the latest video in the parody series Tuesday, and it didn't go easy on the Warner Bros. action flick. The trailer poked fun at not just the movie itself, but the studio's recent struggles, down to even the "Suicide Squad." Pointing out that the trailer called the protagonists the "worst heroes ever," the narrator gleefully quips, "Way to go, guys. You Honest Trailer-ed yourself!"

Will Smith, Margot Robbie, and Jai Courtney are credited for their "great performances," but the rest of the cast isn't so lucky. Jared Leto's Joker, in particular, comes under fire -- and not just for his absence (although many fans didn't like that). The narrator describes his portrayal as an "interpretation that combines James Franco in 'Spring Breakers' with Ace Ventura and a cat." Eesh.

Madonna's Carpool Karaoke experience will be one to watch, so prepare accordingly.

'The Circle' Trailer Pits Emma Watson Against All-Knowing Technology

Posted:

The CircleSharing is caring -- and scary as hell in the new trailer for "The Circle."

The movie stars Emma Watson as college grad Mae, who joins a tech company called The Circle, founded by a charismatic visionary (Tom Hanks). The company produces SeeChange, glass eyeballs which transmit footage in real time, and Mae soon becomes a social media celebrity by sharing her thoughts, hopes, and fears with millions of people. But a programmer (John Boyega) clues her into the realization that there's something darker at work in The Circle. Watch the trailer:If this sounds like an episode of "Black Mirror," well, yeah, it looks like it, too -- though with a higher budget and bigger cast. Like that series, "The Circle" seems to probe the whole "has technology run amok?" question that is part of our modern lives.

"The Circle" opens in theaters April 28.

Margo Martindale on 'The Hollars,' Her 'Americans' Return, and Conquering Hollywood

Posted:

Premiere Of Sony Pictures Classics' "The Hollars" - Red CarpetFor a long time, she was character actress Margo Martindale. And now's she's -- in the words of Bojack Horseman -- esteemed character actress Margo Martindale.

For a couple of decades, Martindale was often the best performer who's name you didn't know in a string of films you loved (early on, she could be spotted in just about everything, from "The Firm," "Dead Man Walking," and "The Hours" to "Million Dollar Baby," "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story," and "Hannah Montana: The Movie." And, after two decades of constant guest work on television, she emerged as one of the most in-demand recurring players in the medium, first with a memorable stint on "Dexter," then her Emmy-winning turn as the matriarch of the Bennett crime family on "Justified," as Florrick campaign manager on "The Good Wife," and, most recently, another Emmy-garnering stint as deeply embedded KGB handler Claudia on FX's "The Americans."

But even as television provides a welcome showcase for the accomplished sexagenarian, movies are still clamoring for her services as well: in "The Hollars" (premiering on Blu-Ray and DVD Dec. 6) actor John Krasinski's latest effort as writer/director, Martindale plays the hospitalized matriarch of a charmingly dysfunctional family who struggle to put their interpersonal dramas on hold during her illness.

Martindale joined Moviefone to reflect on achieving fame and gathering acting trophies at this stage in her career, the joys of appearing in a fellow actor's labor of love, how Claudia will be appearing more than ever before in the next season of "The Americans," and her memories of an early acting colleague named Christopher Reeve.

Moviefone: This time around, among all the work that you do, to work with somebody like John, who you knew well, and to work with a fellow actor behind the camera on "The Hollars," tell me what that meant to you.

Margo Martindale: I think it gave it a nice depth to have him directing and acting because of the kind of story it was, and because it's all so personal. It's about a family. It was as if we were in a hospital room, and the kids were coming home, and I was sick. It felt extremely real, and it felt like there were no cameras around.

I understand that you look at each piece of material that comes your way, and you give it a lot of thought, and try to come up with a character that you haven't played before. I'm curious what the qualities were, here, that you saw that you hadn't played that you were excited to take a swing at.

I don't think I've played anything like this: It's a loving mother. Maybe I have -- I'm sure I've played a loving mother sometime, but I don't know. It was a very different story. I'd never had a brain tumor. The movie, the script, for me, surprised me in the specifics of the script. Just the daily specifics of the things that we talked about and what we did and all of that. I thought it was extremely real. I was drawn to that.

When a project is a labor of love, particularly on John's part as a filmmaker, how does that change things for you coming into it? When you know that people are truly invested in it, and it's just not another attempt at entertainment or commercial success, but it's something that has struck somebody's chord deep, deep down?

That makes it all the better! It was a very intense 22 days of shooting, and I was there only 14 of those, and I felt like I'd left my family behind. I felt very bad about leaving, because what are they going to do without me? That is what happened. What are they going to do without me? Yeah, everybody cared deeply and wanted everything to be very truthful.

You have, of course, this great history as a character actress, and then in the past several years you've gotten an increasing degree of fame. Were you ever worried that that fame might impact your ability to take on the diversity of roles that you'd enjoyed throughout your whole career?

No. I never did. Certainly, number one, fame is nothing I was seeking, I can tell you that. I'm delighted that people actually know my name. It does feel good. So that part of it is a big, huge plus. I don't think anything will change as far as, I think I'll still get to disappear in parts.

Everybody has really gotten to know your television work, first from "Justified" and now "The Americans." Tell me what you love about being able to pop in and really stir the pot on "The Americans," as you have throughout your appearances on the show.

I like that I have some weight on that show. It's nice to be remembered, that Claudia comes with a whole world of knowledge, and these last two seasons I'll be there quite a bit more. So I'm very excited about it.

With a character like Claudia in particular, what do you like about being part of a series where you get to come back and explore new sides and new situations with a character, as opposed to telling a more complete story in a film that's more closed-ended?

I must say, it's challenging because I've done so little in the last two seasons, that I've already done more than I've done in the last two seasons, already now. So it's going to be interesting to see. The first season, of course, I did most of the episodes. So I knew where I was coming from. But this one, I'll be back trying to see where she has a crack, maybe. It's a fascinating, fun part to play -- and an extremely different part for me.

I was lucky enough to be in that Emmy press room when you won this past season. Tell me what that kind of experience has come to mean to you as it entered your life, because I imagine it's a surreal thing, it's a gratifying thing and it's probably a bit of an overwhelming thing.

All of the above, yes, absolutely! Winning for "Justified" was extraordinarily exciting because that part, the arc was so incredible; "The Americans," I'm just delighted that "The Americans" get some recognition. If just people have noticed me on there, I'm very happy about that. Yeah, it can be overwhelming, a little bit. Look, I've worked all my life and I've always believed in myself, and the fact that I've got some awards now, it feels pretty good. Pretty good!

How difficult is playing the role of "esteemed character actress Margo Martindale" on "BoJack Horseman"?

[Laughs] That's really hard. It's like, "Can you exaggerate myself any more?" Yes, it's fun. It's really fun. I think I'll be doing it again this year. I hope so.

What was the surprise of that experience, either in the doing of it or in the response to it?

I couldn't believe there was such a huge response to it. I didn't even know what I was doing. When Will [Arnett] said you're coming to do this, I said I didn't want to. He said, "Well, you have to, because it's you." I said "What do you mean?" He said, "It's Margo Martindale, character actress, so you have to do it."

That made me laugh so much. Then I read the script and I said to Will, "These people seem like animals." He said, "They are animals, you idiot!" I didn't know that. But yes, it's been really fun.

I want to go back to a period in your life where you were really embarking on the road of acting. You got to, very early on, work with Christopher Reeve at the beginning of your career.

Oh my goodness, I did.

I'm curious about that experience. He seemed like such an interesting man, at every point in his life, and I'm wondering what kind of effect he had on you, both as a colleague and as a friend.

I'll tell you, nobody has ever asked me that. That's interesting. We did "Threepenny Opera" together. We had a duet. He was Macheath. I was Mrs. Peachum. I remember getting to Harvard that summer and seeing Chris Reeve and Jonathan Frakes and thinking, "Wow, is this going to be a great summer!" Because they were both so gorgeous. So he was an interesting, disciplined, great, great guy. We had a wonderful summer together, and he was a fabulous Macheath, and a great singer.

Then I came to New York. I'd just come from the University of Michigan to Harvard, then I was going to New York. I started taking acting classes by a teacher from the Group Theater, Paul Mann. Paul Mann said in our acting class, "You have to go downtown and see this actor playing this Nazi in a play." He said, "It's the most brilliant performance I've ever seen." I went downtown and it was Christopher Reeve. I saw him around the neighborhood quite a bit after that, but we didn't stay friends. But he was Christopher Reeve and I was Margo Martindale, so there.

Because you have worked with so many people in your actor's tribe over the years, what do those relationships, whether they're fleeting, or whether they're friendships and professional relationships that recurred throughout the years, what do those mean to you, to know that you've been part of this big, extended actor family for so long?

I am so grateful to have this career that I have, and to have been part of so many different worlds of theater and movies and television. When you go to these award shows and you see people, people I haven't seen in years, I go, "I worked with them ... I worked with them ... I worked with them ... I worked with them ..." It's like, "Really? How did that happen to me?" And then I realize I'm 65 years old. That's how it happened!

'Game of Thrones' Actor Peter Vaughan Dies at Age 93

Posted:

Game of ThronesVeteran actor Peter Vaughan, who starred in television, movies, and stage productions for seven decades, has died at the age of 93.

Vaughan was best known for playing "Grouty" Grout in the '70s BBC sitcom "Porridge" and, more recently, Maester Aemon Targaryen in "Game of Thrones."

His agent, Sally Long-Innes, said in a statement, "This is to confirm that very sadly Peter Vaughan has passed away at approximately 10.30 [GMT] this morning. He died peacefully with his family around him."

After serving in World War II, Vaughan embarked on an acting career in the 1950s. He appeared in movies including "The Naked Runner," "The French Lieutenant's Woman," and "The Remains of the Day."

In television, he made a name for himself with "Porridge," but also had roles in "Citizen Smith," "Our Friends in the North," and "Bleak House." And he appeared in five seasons of "Game of Thrones" before his character passed away of old age.

Vaughan reflected on his most famous roles in a Sunday Post interview in June. "People talk about Grouty but, good heavens, the fan mail I get from all over the world because of Game of Thrones is enormous," he said.

"It's been an absolute privilege to have worked on it for the past five years at my time of life because it's absolutely first-class."

First 'Transformers: The Last Knight' Trailer Promises Explosive Robot War

Posted:

Transformers Last Knight"Two species at war: One flesh, one metal."

The first teaser trailer for "Transformers: The Last Knight" feels like a somber war movie, at first. But this is a Michael Bay movie, and "Bayhem" is just a few seconds away. Soon enough, there are plenty of car chases, car crashes, explosions, and giant robots battling humans and each other to remind you that this is, yes, a "Transformers" movie.

The King Arthur stuff that is part of this movie is teased early on, with shots of knights charging, archers aiming fiery arrows, and a robot dinosaur flying past a horseman. Very little plot is revealed, other than what Anthony Hopkins intones about two worlds colliding and Optimus Prime's absence. The latter fits with this being a sequel to "Age of Extinction," which ended with Optimus Prime heading into space with the Seed to confront the Creators. "Last Knight" will further explore the mythology of the Transformers and how they came to be.

The movie brings back stars Mark Wahlberg, Josh Duhamel, and Tyrese Gibson, and opens in theaters June 23.
