African-American Film Critics Association Names 'Moonlight' and 'Queen Sugar' Best of 2016

Posted:

The African-American Film Critics Association has announced its 2016 honorees in film and television, hailing "Moonlight" and "Queen Sugar" as the best of their respective fields.

The AAFCA, which according to its website aims to "bring greater recognition to the work of writers, directors and actors of color," hailed this year's creative offerings, with co-founder Shawn Edwards noting that there were numerous deserving recipients to choose from. Though no overt reference to the recent #OscarsSoWhite backlash facing the Academy Awards was made, Edwards made it clear that this year's honorees were a step in the right direction for Hollywood.

"It was an exceptional year in terms of the quantity and quality of films about the black experience," Edwards said in a statement. "And while this by no means solves the diversity issue in the film industry, it was definitely refreshing to have such a wide range of exceptional work to choose from to honor and celebrate with our approval."

"The number of incredible performances by black actors and actresses added to a very competitive field of performances and represents a step toward inclusion that our membership warmly embraces," added AAFCA president and co-founder Gil Robertson in another statement. "We look forward to what 2017 has in store."

The full list of honorees in both film and television is below. The African-American Film Critics Association will hand out its awards at a ceremony in Los Angeles on February 4.

Ryan Reynolds Wants to Make a Deadpool and Wolverine Movie

Posted:

Screening of 20th Century Fox's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" - ArrivalsHugh Jackman may have shaved off his signature Wolverine mutton chops for the last time, but that hasn't stopped fellow superhero star Ryan Reynolds from wanting one more onscreen collaboration between Logan and the Merc with a Mouth.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Reynolds -- a newly-minted Golden Globe nominee -- said he desperately wants to make one more Deadpool-Wolverine movie, even though Jackman has said that the upcoming third standalone Wolverine film, "Logan," will be his last appearance as the X-Men hero.

"What we're gonna have to do is convince Hugh," Reynolds told EW. "If anything, I'm going to need to do what I can to get my internet friends back on board to help rally another cause down the line."

Those internet friends were mighty helpful in getting "Deadpool" made, so if anyone is up to the task of changing Jackman's mind, it's certainly Reynolds's faithful -- and unrelenting -- fans. And while Reynolds admits that part of the appeal of reuniting the characters (who first appeared together in 2009's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine") is Wolverine's inherent awesomeness and their onscreen spark, it's also because Jackman is, according to Reynolds, "one of the best human beings."

"Part of the reason I want to do a Deadpool/Wolverine movie is not just because I think the two would light the screen on fire, but [because] I genuinely love the guy," the actor explained to EW.

Keep your fingers crossed, and keep tweeting at Jackman, superhero fans.

Meghan Markle Pens Powerful Essay on Her Experience as a Biracial Woman

Posted:

P.S. Arts' The Party - Arrivals"Suits" star Meghan Markle was thrust into the international spotlight earlier this fall when it was revealed that she was dating England's Prince Harry. With that news came lots of unwanted attention, including some ugly racism, but Markle is using her newfound platform to speak out on issues that are important to her, including her experience of being a biracial woman.

In a powerful essay penned for Elle UK, Markle wrote about what it was like growing up with a black mother and white father, and how her mixed-race identity was a confusing topic for not only strangers to grasp, but for Markle herself to come to terms with. Though her parents did their best to shield her from outside ignorance, Markle remembers an assignment in seventh grade that asked her to check off her ethnicity in a box, choosing either white or black. Later, Markle's father urged her to "draw [her] own box," a lesson she's carried with her since then.

The actress also detailed her experience when she first started her career in Hollywood, admitting she felt excluded by the industry's "label-driven" restrictions.

"Every role has a label; every casting is for something specific," Markle explained. " ... Being 'ethnically ambiguous', as I was pegged in the industry, meant I could audition for virtually any role. ... Sadly, it didn't matter: I wasn't black enough for the black roles and I wasn't white enough for the white ones, leaving me somewhere in the middle as the ethnic chameleon who couldn't book a job."

Markle's big break came when she auditioned for her role as Rachel Zane on "Suits," where "producers weren't looking for someone mixed, nor someone white or black for that matter," she wrote. "They were simply looking for Rachel." That open-mindedness changed Markle's life, and, she says, hopefully opened some minds across the country who were seeing someone like her on their television screens for the first time.

The actress says she still struggles with her identity, specifically when it comes to some of the racial issues facing the country today, but is determined to be herself no matter what.

"While my mixed heritage may have created a grey area surrounding my self-identification, keeping me with a foot on both sides of the fence, I have come to embrace that," Markle wrote. "To say who I am, to share where I'm from, to voice my pride in being a strong, confident mixed-race woman. That when asked to choose my ethnicity in a questionnaire as in my seventh grade class, or these days to check 'Other', I simply say: 'Sorry, world, this is not Lost and I am not one of The Others. I am enough exactly as I am.'"

'Aquaman' Adds Patrick Wilson as Villain ORM

Posted:

2016 Los Angeles Film Festival - "The Conjuring 2" Premiere - ArrivalsDC's upcoming "Aquaman" standalone flick is shoring up its cast, and has just added the film's antagonist to the ensemble.

According to Deadline, actor Patrick Wilson has been tapped to play ORM, also known as Ocean Master, opposite Jason Momoa's title character. ORM is Aquaman's human half-brother, who Deadline likens to Marvel's Loki (a.k.a. Thor's half-brother), though according to the trade, he's much more powerful than that mischievous god. Per DC Comics lore, ORM is "a rival for the throne of Atlantis, and wreaks havoc on the high seas and beneath them when he doesn't get his way," Deadline reports.

Wilson has been carving out an eclectic career for himself, after getting his start in more dramatic roles ("Little Children," "Angels in America"). He's since dipped his toes into the horror genre (he's currently starring in the "Conjuring" series, in addition to headlining the "Insidious" franchise), as well as quirky television roles (a starring role on anthology series "Fargo," an appearance on HBO's "Girls"). Adding a superhero role to his resume seems like the next logical step for the versatile actor.

In addition to Wilson and Momoa, "Aquaman" also stars Amber Heard as Mera, the titular hero's love interest. The James Wan-directed feature hits theaters on October 5, 2018.

50 Cent Threatens to Quit Starz's 'Power' After Golden Globes Snub

Posted:

DuJour Media's Jason Binn, Starz's Chris Albrecht, Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson And Omari Hardwick Host The Season Three Premiere OfWhile the nominees for this year's Golden Globe Awards shared their excitement on social media on Monday, there was one star who didn't earn a nod from the Hollywood Foreign Press Associated who was equally vocal online.

Curtis Jackson, a.k.a. 50 Cent, who stars in and executive produces Starz series "Power," took to Instagram after the nominations were announced, sharing some choice words for the Globes, the HFPA, and even his own network.

A photo posted by 50 Cent (@50cent) on

"Golden globe's [sic] can s*ck a d*ck," the rapper-actor began his post. "I accept my series POWER was not intended to be a signature show for the network but it is the highest rated show."

Jackson went on to say that he was done putting additional effort into promoting the series, and even hinted that he wanted his character, Kanan, to die, so he could leave the show entirely.

"I got other sh*t to do," he said.

In a second Instagram post, Jackson shared what appeared to be some fake artwork for season four of "Power," featuring boxer Floyd Mayweather. The star said he was "off the POWER train," and noted, "I gotta do something different."

In a statement, Starz didn't address Jackson's threat specifically, but noted that it was unconcerned with the show's lack of love from the Golden Globes, citing its connection with viewers as its most important achievement.

"We are grateful for the excellent work being done on 'Power' by the producers, cast and crew," the statement said. "We certainly think this exceptional show has been overlooked by various awards committees, but the fans have made it the second most watched show on premium cable in 2016...and those are accolades that mean just as much if not more."

Variety also noted that an unnamed source from the network said that "there is no internal concern" at Starz that Jackson is actually leaving "Power," and that the cable net believes "the rapper/actor is extremely committed to the show."

ABC Has a Southern Gothic Soap Opera Starring Reba McEntire in the Works

Posted:

Muhammad Ali's Celebrity Fight Night XXII - Show "Desperate Housewives" creator Marc Cherry and Reba McEntire have each had TV success in the past, and now they may find it again by teaming up on a potential new series.

Cherry is working on a new project for ABC starring the country singer, reports Deadline. Still untitled, the series is described as a Southern Gothic soap opera. McEntire would play a local sheriff who joins forces with an FBI agent of Middle Eastern descent to investigate a possible act of terrorism in small-town Kentucky.

The series sounds darker and more melodramatic than the shows McEntire has done before -- namely the comedies "Reba" and "Malibu Country" -- so the project offers an intriguing change. She'll likely benefit from Cherry's experience, given that he has proven to be a pro at soaps. The combination inspired enough interest to get ABC to give it a script commitment plus penalty in what Deadline describes as a "competitive situation."

Cherry is writing the series, and his duties will also include serving as showrunner and executive producer. McEntire is also executive producing, along with Sabrina Wind of Cherry-Wind Productions and Acme Productions' Mindy Schultheis and Michael Hanel.

Golden Globes 2017: Nominees React on Twitter

Posted:

Z100's iHeartRadio Jingle Ball 2016 - ArrivalsIt's the most wonderful time of year for actors and actresses: awards season. With Golden Globe nominations announced Monday, the day was particularly good for the TV and film stars who earned nods from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

There were surprises and there were snubs, but the pack is an impressive one. While we haven't heard reactions from the entire field, some of the nominees shared just how enthused they were on Twitter. Thanks to their tweets, we got to share in their laughter, tears, and emojis.

Some of the first-timers were particularly exuberant. (Can you blame them?)

As you can imagine, there was also a lot of gratitude expressed.

Others found more humorous or creative ways to convey their excitement.

We even got one in Spanish.

The Golden Globes takes place on Jan. 8.

New 'Sherlock' Season 4 Preview Teases Demons and Dark Secrets

Posted:

"Sherlock" Season 4 continues to look dark in the series' latest preview.

When we pick up with the adventures of Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Dr. John Watson (Martin Freeman), expect them to be intense. The new preview, released this weekend, reinforces the message we saw in an earlier teaser -- that "it's not a game anymore." It also takes the warning a step further. From what the 40-second video shows us, there are demons that have been lying in wait and a chilling villain, played by Toby Jones.

The preview offers interesting glimpses at the episodes to come. We see the titular detective in strange circumstances n various intriguing scenes: in front of a burning house, sprawled out on a table, and clutching a gun. Yet, after all the darkness, the trailer ends on an unexpected note: Sherlock looks straight into the camera and declares, "I love you."

"Sherlock" premieres on PBS Masterpiece on Jan. 1.

First 'Fast 8' Trailer: 'The Fate of the Furious' Pits Dom Against the Family

Posted:

"The Fate of the Furious" looks like it will showcase all the over-the-top action sequences you could possibly want.

Universal Pictures finally dropped the first official trailer for the latest installment in the Fast and Furious franchise, and it doesn't disappoint. There's a new villain in town, and she is going to cause major trouble for Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his fast family. Played by Charlize Theron and described as "the very face of high-tech terrorism," she seems to have recruited an ally as unlikely as he is dangerous: Dom.

"Did you ever think that you'd betray your family the way you did today?" she asks during the trailer.

Needless to say, this presents unique challenges for the rest of the gang. They have to team up to catch Dom, and evidently, they're going to need bigger, faster, and flashier cars -- and even a tank -- to do it.The star-studded cast also includes Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Kurt Russell, and Jason Statham.

Buckle up, because "The Fate of the Furious" races into theaters on April 14.

2017 Golden Globe Nominations: The 5 Biggest Snubs and Surprises

Posted:

That sound you heard after Don Cheadle, Laura Dern, and Anna Kendrick read out the names of this year's Golden Globes nominees this morning? That was the inevitable head-scratching over the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's sometimes on-point -- but usually baffling -- picks for the year's best in film and TV.

Here are five of their choices that knocked us out of our chairs.

1. A Deafening "Silence"
Two films that almost everyone was sure were going to be nominated for Best Drama were awards-season favorite Martin Scorsese's epic "Silence" and "Fences," the latter directed by Denzel Washington. He and VIola Davis did get nominated for acting in "Fences," but that was it for the prestigious Broadway-bred drama.

Still, that's more than the silent treatment the Globe voters gave to "Silence." In their places: World War II drama "Hacksaw Ridge" -- which also earned nods for star Andrew Garfield and director Mel Gibson, to whom the foreign reporters of the HFPA have always been kinder than their American counterparts -- and rural new-noir "Hell or High Water." Both are acclaimed movies but were considered long-shots in this race. By the way, Garfield also stars in "Silence," so for Scorsese, the actor's nomination for Gibson's film over his probably adds insult to injury.

2. "Deadpool"
It was a pleasant surprise to see the satirical superhero movie nominated in the comedy categories for Best Film and Best Actor (Ryan Reynolds), both because it came out way back in February and because, well, it's a superhero movie.

The genre tends to get no love at awards time, but then again, the movie itself blew a raspberry at the genre, so maybe the filmmakers and the Globe voters were on the same page. Also, a worldwide gross of $783 million is hard to ignore; clearly, "Deadpool" was a favorite in many countries whose reporters are HFPA members.

3. Jon Snow, Killed Again
Yes, we live in a golden age of television where there's a glut of great shows on broadcast, cable, and now streaming, but that also means there were too many snubs in the TV categories to count. No Millie Bobby Brown for "Stranger Things?" No Anthony Hopkins or Jeffrey Wright for "Westworld"? Nothing, not even a cup of coffee, for the "Gilmore Girls" revival?

Still, the one that hurts the most is Kit Harington. The "Game of Thrones" actor flippin' RETURNED FROM THE DEAD for your entertainment, then delivered his most dramatic season ever, culminating in the epic "Battle of the Bastards." Plus, he spent more than a year off-screen fooling the world into thinking he wasn't coming back. If that's not award-worthy acting, what is?

4. Issa Rae
The Globe voters pride themselves on being ahead of the pack when it comes to discovering new TV talent, since the calendar gives them an eight-month head start over the Emmys. They especially like anointing new comedy ingenues. After crowning Gina Rodriguez ("Jane the Virgin") two years ago and Rachel Bloom ("Crazy Ex-Girlfriend") last year, it's now Rae's turn for her delightful turn as a muddling single gal on HBO's "Insecure."

5. "Finding Dory" Denied
Granted, the Best Animated Feature category already has two deserving Disney movies in it, "Zootopia" and "Moana." Still, the slot everyone expected would go to the fish-tale favorite went instead to something called "My Life as a Zucchini."

For the record, it's a stop-motion film about an orphaned boy, submitted by Switzerland this year as the country's entry into the Oscars' Best Foreign Language Film pool. It wowed 'me last May at Cannes. Still, fans of what is (so far) the biggest hit of 2016 have to wonder if there isn't something fishy about this selection.

New 'Walking Dead' Season 7 Poster: Two Perfect Words Tease 2017 Return

Posted:

Finally! This is why we still watch "The Walking Dead" after seven-and-a-half seasons of madness.

Last night, the AMC series aired the Season 7 midseason finale, which was supersized to 90 minutes and ended with what fans had wanted from it the whole time: Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) returning to Beast Mode, most of the group reuniting, and everyone agreeing it's time to fight back against Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan).

(Meanwhile, while the midseason finale was airing, Negan won himself a Critics' Choice Award. He really can't be stopped, even on other networks.)

Monday morning, AMC rewarded loyal fans with a new key art poster to promote the show's 2017 return:

Rise up! Bring. It. On. The first half really tried our patience sometimes, but now we're onto something. Alexandria, Hilltop, and the Kingdom are all aware of the Negan threat and seem poised to team up -- despite Carol (Melissa McBride) wanting to be left the hell alone and Morgan (Lennie James) still not being ready to take more lives. And don't forget about Oceanside, 'cause they may swoop in to save the day "Battle of the Bastards"-style, once the war starts. This should get pretty cool.

But, for now, we wait. That's the annoying part. Things are just getting good ... so of course they stop the show for two months. Sigh. "The Walking Dead" Season 7 returns Sunday, Feburary 12 on AMC.

Harry Potter's Matthew Lewis Is Engaged to Universal Studios Employee

Posted:

Our sweet Neville is all grown up. "Harry Potter" film star Matthew Lewis, 27, is engaged to Angela Jones, an event planner at Universal Studios Orlando. According to TMZ, the pair met in January at the three-day "A Celebration of Harry Potter" Wizarding World event, and he proposed to her last month in Paris. Ah, l'amour!

TMZ shared a photo from Jones's private Instagram page, showing her with her new fiance and engagement ring in front of the Eiffel Tower. A spokesman confirmed the news to MailOnline, saying, "They're both over the moon. They got together in July and hit it off straight away."

The "July" note is interesting, since TMZ noted that July is when Jones's divorce from her first husband was finalized. If that's really when they "got together" then they had only been dating for four months when they got engaged. But when you know, you know.

Lewis hasn't personally addressed the big news yet, and he may not. He is a pretty private guy, and his Twitter is currently devoted to cute dog photos and promotion for children's charities.

Although now known as Hot Neville, Matthew Lewis wasn't always considered a heartthrob, and it came as a shock to author J.K. Rowling to see a very grown-up Lewis flash his ripped body in Attitude magazine, making for a hilariously awkward Twitter convo.

Sorry, Jo, he's not your little Gryffindor anymore!

Holy Sith, the First 'Rogue One' Reviews May Make You Weep

Posted:

Nissan Rogue One Star Wars Limited Edition at World PremiereBreak out your happy Ewok dance, "Star Wars" fans.

Not even the Millennium Falcon could fly hopes for "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" any higher, but -- based on early reactions -- Jyn Erso's rebel yell will not let you down. Far from it. Lucky critics and fans got a look at the standalone movie at the Los Angeles premiere and shared quick thoughts on Twitter. (Full reviews will be posted starting Tuesday.) Because the film had major reshoots, and some shuffling behind-the-scenes, many fans worried for the final product. Their lack of faith was disturbing, and apparently unwarranted.

Here are some of the reactions:

So that's what they thought. The timeline places "Rogue One" right before "Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope," but it remains to be seen where fans will rank it on their list of favorites: toward the OGs, the prequels, or the just-starting-sequels?

"Rogue One," directed by Gareth Edwards and starring Felicity Jones, opens this Friday, December 16.

Trump Names Walter White to Head DEA in Genius 'SNL' Cold Open

Posted:

It's time to make America cook again -- red, white, and a whole lotta blue!

Bryan Cranston didn't host "Saturday Night Live" on December 10, but he both opened and stole the show in a surprise return to his iconic "Breaking Bad" role. Cranston's Walter White was interviewed by CNN's Jake Tapper (Beck Bennett) in the cold open, which also featured President-Elect Donald Trump's senior adviser Kellyanne Conway (Kate McKinnon).

Apparently Walter White faked his own death and has just been "off the grid for a while." Steve Bannon discovered White "under the comments section at Breitbart" and recommended him to Donald Trump as the new head of the Drug Enforcement Administration. Tapper was confused about the appointment since White was introduced as just "a high school science teacher from New Mexico."

Jake Tapper: "Do you know anything about drug enforcement?"

Walter White: "Trust me, I know the DEA better than anyone, inside and out."

Tapper: "Mr. White, how did you even get considered for the job? Do you know Donald Trump?"

White: "Nope. Nope. But I'm a big fan. I like his style. He acts first, and then asks questions later. I also like that wall he wants to build. Nothing comes in from Mexico, meaning a lot less competition for the rest of us."

Tapper: "You mean jobs?"

White: [smirking] "Sure."

White also drops his classic "I am the one who knocks" line but, sadly, not "I am the danger."

Check out this exclusive panel clip with Sarah Megan Thomas, who co-produced and co-stars in the film:"Bridget Jones's Baby"

The home release has nearly 40 minutes of extras, including an alternate ending, a gag reel, deleted and alternate scenes, a multi-part making-of documentary featuring interviews with the cast and crew, and more.

New Video on Demand, Rental Streaming, and Digital

"Snowden"Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Edward Snowden in Oliver Stone's drama delving into the mind of the titular hero/traitor who exposed illegal surveillance activities by the NSA. "The Man in the High Castle" Season 2 (Amazon)
What if we had lost World War II? This Amazon series, based on the novel Philip K. Dick, continues its fascinating (and terrifying) alternate version of history in the 10 episodes of Season 2. They will be available for streaming with Prime December 16 on Amazon Video.

"The Disappointments Room"
Kate Beckinsale stars in this horror film based on true events, following a couple who move to a rural Southern mansion with their 5-year-old son, only for their dream home to turn into a nightmare. Hate when that happens! The movie is available for Digital HD download December 13, then DVD on December 20.

New on Netflix

"Barry" (Netflix Original)Devon Terrell plays young Barack Obama, aka "Barry," in this drama about the future POTUS's life at Columbia University in 1981. "In a crime-ridden and racially charged environment, Barry finds himself pulled between various social spheres and struggles to maintain a series of increasingly strained relationships with his Kansas-born mother, his estranged Kenyan father, and his classmates.Barry is the story of a young man grappling with those same issues that his country, and arguably the world, are still coming to terms with 35 years later." The film -- co-starring Anya Taylor-Joy, Jason Mitchell, Ashley Judd, Jenna Elfman, Ellar Coltrane, Avi Nash, and Linus Roache -- is available on Netflix December 16.

"Call Me Francis" (Netflix Original)
This four-part biographical miniseries chronicles Pope Francis's life from his early years as Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires in the 1960s, through the height of Argentina's "Dirty Wars" during the 1970s and 80s, culminating in his appointment as Pope Francis, the first Latin American Pope in history, in 2013.

"Crazyhead" (Netflix Original)
In this British comedy/horror series, "Bowling alley worker Amy and nonconformist Raquel kick some serious demon butt while also facing their inner demons as they navigate their early 20s." The six-part series streams on Netflix December 16.

"No Second Chance" Season 1 (Netflix Original)
The French TV series "No Second Chance," based on the bestselling novel by Harlan Coben, is coming to Netflix with English subtitles starting December 16. Read more about it over here.

"The Adventures of Puss in Boots" Season 4 (Netflix Original)
Alert the "Shrek" fans in your life: "The world's greatest feline fighter, lover, and milk connoisseur takes on daring adventures in exotic locations in this family-friendly comedy series." Season 4 arrives December 16.

TV Worth Watching

"The Exorcist" Season 1 (Friday on Fox at 9 p.m.)Fox's vastly underrated series -- a sequel to the 1973 movie -- ends its first season on Friday, December 16. The fate of the Rance family hangs in the balance in the Season 1 finale, "Chapter Ten: Three Rooms." Here's Fox's synopsis: "Everything has led to this moment. Forty years ago, the demon was denied its prize. Now it will stop at nothing to destroy Angela Rance (Geena Davis) and her family. Their only hope lies in two men: Marcus (Ben Daniels) and Tomas (Alfonso Herrera). But with the enemies of the church mobilizing against Pope Sebastian, time is running out for everyone." Binge the first nine episodes to date and pray to God and Fox that there will be a Season 2.

"Star" Season 1 (Wednesday at 9 p.m. on Fox)
In this new musical drama, three talented young singers (played by Jude Demorest, Ryan Destiny and Brittany O'Grady) navigate the music business on their road to success. Queen Latifah and Benjamin Bratt co-star.

"The Voice" Season 11 (Monday and Tuesday on NBC at 8 p.m.)
The eleventh season of "The Voice" wants all of your attention this week -- starting with Live Finale, Part 1 on Monday night, with the final four artists competing in front of the judges; then a recap of those performances Tuesday night, including fresh updates with host Carson Daly and special guests; then the live finale starting at 9 p.m. on Tuesday as Part 2 reveals the Season 11 winner.

"America's Next Top Model" Cycle 23 (Monday at 10 p.m. on VH1)You wanna be on top? Again? Tyra Banks is gone as ANTM host, and the show has moved to VH1, but they are still calling seasons "cycles," so how different can it really be? In the December 12 premiere, "Business, Brand, Boss," VH1 teases, "America's Next Top Model returns to New York City, where 28 aspiring models will be winnowed down to 14. New host Rita Ora, along with her team of fashion tastemakers, welcomes the girls and sends them to their first challenge." The judging panel now includes head judge Ora, model Ashley Graham, Paper magazine chief creative officer Drew Elliott, and celebrity stylist Law Roach. Tyra is still an executive producer, though, and the supertrailer shows that she is still at least partially involved.

"Survivor" Season 33 (Wednesday on CBS at 8 p.m.)
Reality TV may not be your thing, but it's having a big week, with several seasons coming and going. You should make time for the three-hour finale of one of the best seasons of "Survivor" in years. Jeff Probst promises the "Millennials vs. Gen X" finale is one of the best they've ever had ... which means Bret definitely won't win. Sorry, man.

21 Things You Never Knew About 'Jerry Maguire'

Posted:

"Jerry Maguire" had us at hello.

Released 20 years ago this week (on December 13, 1996), Cameron Crowe's sports-themed romantic dramedy gave us Tom Cruise at his most charming, made a star of Renée Zellweger, made an Oscar-winner of Cuba Gooding Jr. and generated at least three indelible catchphrases. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of this '90s classic, here are some mission statement-worthy facts you need to know.
1. After the failure of his 1992 movie "Singles," Crowe felt like he learned who his true friends were. That feeling was the seed of his next film. "I originally wanted to do a movie that was about how you would arrive at your greatest success through incredible failure," Crowe has said of the "Jerry Maguire" script. One inspiration was a newspaper photo of an athlete and his agent, "They were two guys of very different sizes and loud shirts. But they were clearly two guys against the world."

2. Much of the inspiration for Jerry as a sports agent came from Leigh Steinberg, a real-life agent who served as a consultant on the film. You can see him in the movie as the man who introduces Jerry to Troy Aikman (a real-life Steinberg client). He'd have had a bigger role in the movie, playing Jerry's brother, who gives an unflattering toast at Jerry's bachelor party, but he didn't want to come off as a villain. "To this day, I may be the only actor who ever talked his way out of a scene with Tom Cruise," he claims. 3. He also claims to have taught Jerry O'Connell, as aspiring NFL quarterback Frank Cushman, how to throw a spiral.

4. Similarly, Crowe based Rod Tidwell loosely on Tim McDonald, a San Francisco 49er who once walked the media floor with Steinberg the way Jerry and Rod do in the movie.
5. Crowe has also credited McDonald with coining the phrase "Show me the money."

6. Crowe spent nearly four years writing and revising the script, all the while with Tom Hanks in mind for the lead. But Hanks was committed to directing and starring in "That Thing You Do."
7. Cruise was Crowe's next choice, though he'd been told the A-lister wouldn't want to play a struggling loser. "In fact," Crowe learned, "he was dying to play someone who was on the ropes."

8. Connie Britton screen tested for the role of Dorothy and was led to believe she'd nailed the audition. But there was still one more actress the producers wanted to see, and that turned out to be Renée Zellweger. Britton has joked that she probably lost the part because she's too tall for Tom Cruise.
9. Zellweger, then little-known, auditioned for Dorothy three times over the space of a month. Cruise was there for her final reading, and that made all the difference. Crowe videotaped the audition and saw Cruise reacting to Zellweger "in that great way that Spencer Tracy regards Katharine Hepburn. Just someone watching this person who, as it happens, was going to play a big part in his future life. And it was all there in the first moment."

10. Having begun his show business career as a breakdancer, Cuba Gooding, Jr. was also the right actor to perform Rod's end-zone dance, which was choreographed by Paula Abdul.
11. Gooding disarmed and won over Cruise and Crowe during his audition by performing the locker room scene naked as written. His high school football background gave him the chops to play Rod, though he also went through a week of training camp to prepare.

12. To prepare for the scene where she has to clock Cruise, Kelly Preston trained with celebrated boxer Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini.
13. To play Ray, Crowe wanted a child who didn't seem like a professional actor. But the one he hired didn't work out and had to be replaced after three weeks.

He hired a kid with a McDonald's ad on his résumé, Jonathan Lipnicki. The five-year-old and Cruise had a rapport, maybe because, as Lipnicki told Cruise at his audition, "Top Gun" was his favorite movie, one he'd seen 20 times. Lipnicki brought to the picture Ray's look (the spiky hair, the glasses) and the line about the human head weighing eight pounds.

14. Crowe wanted the director he admired most, Billy Wilder -- whose "The Apartment" was Crowe's model for the office romance between Jerry and Dorothy -- to play Dicky Fox, Jerry's mentor seen in flashbacks. Wilder, who was a sparkling conversationalist but not an actor, turned him down. Not even Cruise could talk him into taking the part. Crowe went instead with Jared Jussim, a top lawyer at Sony (the film's distributor) who had no acting experience.
15. No Cameron Crowe movie would be complete without some music-business cameos. There's Crowe's former boss, Rolling Stone founder Jann Wenner, playing Jerry's boss at Sports Management International. That's the late Glenn Frey of the Eagles as the general manager of Rod's team, the Arizona Cardinals. Music video director Mark Pellington is the director of the commercial with the camel. And that's Alice in Chains frontman Jerry Cantrell as the guy at the copy shop who helps Jerry print his notorious mission statement.

16. We see very little of that mission statement on screen, but Crowe really did write all 27 pages of it. He posted it online a few months ago here. (It is also on the film's first special edition DVD.)
17. Life Imitates Art moment: Shortly after Gooding filmed the "Are you Hootie?" scene, a fan in an airport really did mistake the actor for Hootie and the Blowfish frontman Darius Rucker. By the way, in Spain, the line is dubbed, "Are you Ice-T?" because Rucker and his band weren't that famous there.

18. As you would expect in a movie about athlete endorsements, product placement runs rampant in "Jerry Maguire," with some 25 retailers' merchandise getting prominent screen time. But then there was Reebok, which spent $1.5 million on placement, including a commercial starring Rod.
