New 'Billions' Season 2 Teaser: Hate Is 'Endlessly Renewable' Posted: The "Billions" war is picking up right where it left off: with plenty of hate. Showtime unveiled a new Season 2 teaser Wednesday in preparation for the drama's February return, and the preview makes it clear that neither of the cutthroat leading men plans to surrender. The second season will continue to pit U.S. Attorney Chuck Rhoades (Paul Giamatti) against hedge fund billionaire Bobby "Axe" Axelrod (Damian Lewis). As we can see, it's not smooth sailing for either. Chuck, in particular, seems to have trouble ahead. His job is at stake, and he has a "dangerous" man investigating his office. On top of that, his estranged wife, Wendy (Maggie Siff), is trying to distance herself from him. We're not ready to place our bets on anyone, though -- we'll wait for the drama to unfold. The series also stars Malin Akerman, Toby Leonard Moore, David Costabile, and Condola Rashad. "Billions" Season 2 premieres Sunday, Feb. 19 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on Showtime. Julia Roberts to Star in Her First TV Series, 'Today Will Be Different' Posted: Julia Roberts is trying something a little different: headlining a TV series. The Academy Award-winning actress has boarded the limited series "Today Will Be Different," reports Variety. Based on Maria Semple's best-selling novel of the same name, the TV adaptation will be written by the author herself. In it, Roberts will play the protagonist, Eleanor Flood, a woman who attempts to spend a day knocking items off her "to do" list, only to face unexpected obstacles. As you'd imagine, Semple is thrilled that Roberts signed on. She described her reaction as "giddy" and predicted "a fun ride." Roberts' duties also include executive producing through her banner Red Om Films, alongside Semple and Annapurna Pictures' Megan Ellison and Sue Naegle. The series has yet to be nabbed by a network, but according to Variety sources, it will be shopped around early next year. Given that Roberts found the project tempting enough to dive into TV, we don't think they'll have trouble drumming up interest. From 'Pets' to David S. Pumpkins: The Secret Life of 'SNL' Vet Bobby Moynihan Posted: After joining the cast of "Saturday Night Live" in 2008, Bobby Moynihan became in indispensable go-to member of the late-night sketch show's ensemble, and the comedic force behind a roster of bizarre and memorable characters including the uninhibited, opinionated, and intoxicated Drunk Uncle, kitty cat-obsessed astronaut Kirby, Michael Che's high school pal turned Weekend Update rival Riblet. Away from "SNL," Moynihan's been building a burgeoning sideline voicing animated characters, and his most recent triumph was providing the always-on-edge-but-none-too-bright pug Mel in "The Secret Life of Pets." With the film now available on home video, Moynihan sounds off to Moviefone about his love for his newfound career, as well as being at the center of the current pop cultural conversation on "SNL." You had a front-and-center view recently of what was clearly one of the big pop-culture water cooler moments in the wake of the election, when Kate McKinnon as Hillary Clinton played Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" on the piano. What was it like to take part in that particular episode and to see the audience responding, especially to the opening sketch, but also in general? Yeah, in my nine years [at "SNL"], I don't know if I've had a show like that or felt that way during a show. It just felt like we were doing our jobs to make people laugh and it felt good. It also was, as a fan of Dave Chappelle and A Tribe Called Quest, it was pretty legendary to just sit there and be part of it. I feel very lucky today. For you, what is the fun of having the "SNL" platform to take on political and social commentary? What do you enjoy about that aspect of the job? I enjoy every aspect of this job. I always have. I was a pretty big "SNL" fan before I got the show. So now that I'm on it, I'm just glad I get to be a part of it, and if we can do something to help people, make people laugh or take their minds off of stuff, I guess that's the best part. We haven't seen Drunk Uncle for a while, and a return in the Trump era would seem appropriate. Do you have some plans for him? I never know. I love that character and I don't ever want to burn it out too quickly. Yeah, I don't know. Maybe hopefully someday ... That character was always fun to do. A lot of people are very nice about it. I've seen you here visiting in Los Angeles and taking in presentations like Paley Center's "LOST" reunion, where you've gone as a fan in the audience. Tell me about the fun for you to still be a fan -- even while you're in the thick of the entertainment industry. Yeah, I'm a fan of a lot of things. I've always been a giant "Lost" fan. I enjoy Damon Lindelof's work a great deal. I think Carlton [Cuse] and them are good guys. I like the universes I can get lost in for a little while. Yeah, some of my best memories from "SNL," one of the things that this job affords you is to be able to jump into worlds that you love. I wrote that "Hobbit Office" sketch, and to be able to do part of the British "Office" with Martin Freeman -- it's stuff like that where you just write it and you hope. You're a fan of the show and you can write these specifics, and then when you're in it, in costumes with these people who are involved, it's a great deal of fun. I enjoy it a lot. Me and Mikey Day and Taran Killam wrote that "Undercover Boss" with Kylo Ren, and just playing in that world was super fun. Especially when people who are involved with the actual productions are excited to be involved in it too. It's playtime. It makes me a kid again. You encounter people who are iconic and people who are of the moment, and I have a little bit of that in my job, and I always have to resist turning into Chris Farley from "The Chris Farley Show" sketches. How about you? Yeah, that's me every day. Do you go through that and have to figure out, "OK, here's where I can fan-out, here's where I'm a pro, and here's where I just sit and observe and be Forrest Gump in this scenario?" Yeah, I'd like to think I've gotten better at it, but I still fanboy out pretty hard on some things, but I'm getting better. I'm becoming an adult. I have to ask you about the explosion of popularity of the David S. Pumpkins sketch with Tom Hanks. Did you guys think that that was going to have that kind of crazy viral experience, almost becoming a Halloween icon overnight? No, I don't go into writing going like, "This is going to be a big thing over Halloween." It definitely wasn't that. More, "What dumb thing can we do with Tom Hanks?", and he seemed a pretty silly, fun guy. I think part of the reason that people loved it is because it was Tom Hanks doing a very silly thing, and me and Mikey Day have written together a lot, so we just wanted a new cast member to do something where we got to do something together. Why we chose dancing skeletons, I'll never know, but I think we wrote it at 5 a.m., so yeah. People were stoked about "The Secret Life of Pets" from the trailer alone, and then, of course, the movie did so well with audiences. What was cool about observing the reaction? I guess it's more realizing, just seeing how much people really care for their pets. Seeing the pet community kind of come together, people who have dogs absolutely love their dogs. I feel like having a dog is like having a kid. I think there's a special emotional attachment that really kind of got everybody ... The movie did such a good job at showing that curious side of what adventures they would go on if they were left alone. Did you look at dogs at all to get a little inspiration? Yeah, the animation that they showed me was enough to see who this guy was, but yes, I went to dog parks for 30 years and watched them and studied them ... No, I kind of just went for it! Are you a dog guy or a pet guy at all? Not really. I never had a dog. I've had some fish and a parakeet throughout my life, but that was about it. I had goldfish that I won, like, my first day in college, and I think they lived for almost nine years, which is almost unheard of. I had fish for a very long time, but they are pretty low-maintenance pets. That was as much as I could handle at the time. Are you much of an aficionado of animation? Is that an art form that you've paid close attention to? Yes, I've always loved it. When I was a kid, I wanted to draw comic books, and I grew up on Hanna-Barbera, and "G.I. Joe" and all those '80s and '90s classic cartoons, so I've always been a fan, but to get to work on it now, I really enjoy it. I had so much fun doing that production, and I'm so happy that people really enjoy it. I truly hope they do a sequel. I hope. I haven't heard anything, but I hope they do. I would love to play that silly dog again. What are your immediate career goals? What are the things that you're pushing forward while you're still enjoying your time on "SNL"? I'm always thinking about the future, but right now it's just kind of focusing on "SNL," and I just enjoy working. I just want to work and do good work. Yeah, I've been lucky to do a lot of animation lately. I've been enjoying that. Other than that, just trying to get through the day. Watch Alec Baldwin Wage War on Puppies in 'The Boss Baby' Trailer Posted: Forget "Saturday Night Live" guest appearances: Alec Baldwin has another big role -- with even tinier hands. DreamWorks Animation released the official trailer for "The Boss Baby" Wednesday, and it features Baldwin as a baby with a giant agenda. His character, Baby Boss Templeton, is on a mission to find out why there isn't enough love to go around. Solving the problem involves unorthodox solutions, such as trying to take down puppies so they can't steal love from babies. Along the way, Baby Boss forms an unlikely alliance with his older brother, who just wants him gone. He also enlists the help of some fellow diaper-wearing friends, all while trying to keep their parents out of the loop.Baldwin isn't the only big-name star whose voice you'll hear in the animated comedy. Lisa Kudrow, Jimmy Kimmel, Steve Buscemi, and Tobey Macguire are all part of the cast as well. "The Boss Baby" hits theaters on March 31. 'Saved by the Bell': The Max Could Pop up in a City Near You Posted: Start trying out your best backwards chair poses: A pop-up diner inspired by the "Saved by the Bell" gang's favorite hangout, The Max, is coming to various U.S. cities. The diner, officially titled Saved by the Max, made its debut in Chicago in May. In line with its theme, the pop-up gives looks like its inspiration, hosts "Saved by the Bell" trivia nights, and offers menu items like the Bayside Burger. Dennis Haskins, who played Mr. Belding, has even shown up to DJ as The Big Bopper, as he did on the show. Fortunately for those of us not in the Midwest, the diner is due to arrive in new locations as well. Saved by the Max unveiled a video Thursday in which Haskins announced that the pop-up is hitting the road. At this point, we don't know its destinations, but the good news is that fans will get to weigh in. Saved by the Max is calling for suggestions on social media, so if you round up enough excited "Saved by the Bell" fans in your area, your '90s dreams may come true. In the meantime, Chicagoans will have a chance to say goodbye. Haskins also revealed that the city's Saved by the Max will have "one final semester." Before it closes for good, there will be new menu items, charity partnerships, and more special guests. The "Saved by the Bell" fun never ends.[via: People] This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig Are Making a Musical Together Posted: We'd watch Kristen Wiig and Will Ferrell do just about anything together on the big screen, and their latest collaboration sounds even more perfect -- and quirky -- than we could ever imagine. According to Deadline, the "SNL" alums are teaming up for a musical comedy that will tell the true story of "how corporate America employed Broadway talent to take part in industrial shows from the 1950s to the 1980s to help motivate sales forces and educate employees on products. ... Companies that employed the talent ranged from American Standard, G.E., Exxon, J.C. Penney, Westinghouse, Coca-Cola, Phillips Petroleum, Lucite and Ford Motor Co. They would act and sing either with original songs or song parodies." The concept is based on the nonfiction book "Everything Is Coming Up Profits: The Golden Age Of Industrial Musicals" by Steve Young and Mike Murphy. As if Wiig and Ferrell weren't a big enough draw, the behind the scenes talent is top-notch, too. Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman -- who collaborated on NBC's musical series "Smash,' as well as the Broadway version of "Hairspray" -- are writing the score, and Marc Platt -- who's produced a bunch of buzzy recent musical projects, including Fox's "Grease Live!" and Oscar hopeful "La La Land" -- will produce. Deadline reports that deals are still being negotiated for the high-profile project, so stay tuned. We can't wait to see how this zany flick turns out. You Can Learn How to Be a TV Writer From Shonda Rhimes Herself Posted: Have you ever aspired to work as a writer for a television show like "Grey's Anatomy" or "Scandal"? Well, now's your chance to learn all about the craft from none other than the woman who created those smash series. Shonda Rhimes, whose Shondaland production empire has ruled over ABC for more than a decade, is offering an online master class teaching television writing, in which she'll advise wannabe TV writers "how to create compelling characters, write a pilot, pitch your idea, be a showrunner, and build your career." Enrollees will also have access to Rhimes's "pilot scripts, pitch notes, and story bibles." "I don't believe in the phrase 'aspiring writer,'" the producer says in an introductory video. "To me, it's just -- you're a writer. Go write." Rhimes also advised those seeking out a career in the TV industry devote as little as 10 minutes per day to writing, and said she's seeking students who are as passionate about scripting television as she is. "If you can think of any other thing you want to be almost as much as being a television writer -- anything -- go be it," she says in the video. "If you can't think of anything else, then welcome. You are one of us, you are of our people, and I cannot wait to meet you." For more information and to enroll, visit the master class site here. Steve Harvey to Return as Miss Universe 2016 Host After Major 2015 Blunder Posted: After his major -- and majorly embarrassing -- flub from the 2015 ceremony, Steve Harvey is hoping for some redemption: The comedian has been confirmed to return to emcee the 2016 Miss Universe pageant, set to take place in January. For those who were living under an internet-free rock at the time, Harvey made the biggest mistake a pageant host can make back in December 2015 when he announced the wrong winner for the Miss Universe title. The comedian accidentally said that Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutiérrez, was the 2015 champ, when she was in fact the first runner-up to the real winner, Miss Phillippines, Pia Wurtzbach. Gutiérrez was given the crown, sash, and a giant bouquet of flowers before the mistake was realized. A sheepish Harvey had to return to the stage, interrupt Gutiérrez's celebration, and announce to the crowd that he had read the wrong name. He held up his cue cards as proof of his mistake, and immediately owned the error, telling the audience, "I will take responsibility for this. It was my mistake ... horrible mistake." Despite that drama -- and all the public ridicule, and even death threats, that followed his blunder -- Harvey remained a good sport about the error, and the show's producers even publicly backed him, stating at the time that they'd love to have him back. Looks like they decided to make good on that promise. The Miss Universe 2016 pageant will take place in the Phillippines on January 29, 2017. We're betting Harvey will bring some extra reading glasses with him this time around. [via: Entertainment Weekly] This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Here Are the 9 Best 'Star Wars' Battle Scenes Posted: Before "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" started blowing up spaceships and mowing down Stormtroopers, the "Star Wars" franchise had a storied history of interplanetary conflict. With more clashes on the horizon for this sci-fi galaxy, we thought it was a good time to take a look back at the nine best battles in the "Star Wars" cinematic universe. Uh Oh, the First 'Passengers' Reviews Are Brutal Posted: But ... but ... Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence were supposed to give us "Titanic" in space! They are perfect together outside of "Passengers" -- in the publicity leading up to the premiere -- so how is it possible that their combined superpowers could result in something with such brutal reviews? Entertainment Weekly just gave the film a grade of D+ (way harsh, Tai) adding this summation to the end of the critique: "To recap, 1.) Passengers is bad. 2.) Michael Sheen is great. 3.) As for the rest, save your money." Here are some of the blurbs chosen to represent the reviews:
Without having seen the movie, it's a surprise to see so many reviews focus on a creepy/stalker/male fantasy/control angle. That did not come across in the trailers, which made it seem like a modern sci-fi dystopian love story. But these critics speak for themselves, not the rest of us, so there's still hope that we will completely disagree -- about this movie and "Collateral Beauty," which they also hated. Tough crowd. "Passengers" opens December 21. Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
'Nashville' Season 5 Photo: Juliette Looks Bloody Awful After Plane Crash Posted: Save the cheerleader! Hayden Panettiere's Juliette Barnes is alive and returning for "Nashville" Season 5, but it's clear that she has a lot of healing to do in the year ahead. Entertainment Weekly shared an image from the new season, showing bloody Juliette on the ground after her plane crash from the Season 4 finale. That is one nasty head wound. What happened, and what's next for her? Well, Nashies can at least start to find out tonight. The series is moving from ABC to CMT -- with 22 new episodes starting Thursday, January 5 -- but the first hour of the two-hour premiere airs tonight, Thursday, December 15 at 9 p.m. on CMT. Here's a little teaser on that:
And here's the official Season 5 trailer: The new season officially starts January 5, 2017 at 9 p.m. on CMT. Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Jimmy Kimmel Reveals What Oscars Hosts Are Paid & It's Kinda Sad Posted: Considering the beatings most Oscars hosts take from social media, the Academy should at least offer them hefty hazard pay. Jimmy Kimmel is hosting the 2017 Academy Awards, and he recently told KROQ's Kevin & Bean morning show that he would be paid $15,000 to host the event. "You know why? I think it's illegal to pay nothing." He was asked if his pay was on par with previous Oscars hosts like Chris Rock and Billy Crystal. "That's what they told me," Kimmel said, but he wondered if hosts receive a raise for return hosting gigs. "I'm not sure I was supposed to reveal this, but nobody told me not to. I consider this their fault." Listen, $15,000 for one event is more than enough from here, but it is the Oscars -- a major production watched by 30-40 million people, just in the U.S. alone -- and they do put months of work into it. So you could argue that it's on the low side of the pay scale. It's usually not safe to take anything Kimmel says seriously, but this time the facts seem to back it up. This USA Today video from February 2016 also mentioned $15,000-$25,000 as the Oscars host pay range. In 2013, The Hollywood Reporter posted a breakdown of several Oscars costs:
Alec Baldwin got candid about hosting the Oscars in an interview with THR, also in 2013. Here's where he mentions the low pay:
It sounds like hosting the Golden Globes is a more lucrative gig. In 2013, Radar had a report claiming Tina Fey and Amy Poehler would both receive $4 million to host the Globes. But representatives for Tina and Amy told Vanity Fair that "the dollar figure that Radar has printed is grossly exaggerated." According to industry sources, VF reported, the pay for awards-show hosts generally tops out in the low six figures. Low six figures is still more than $15,000. Either way, it's not money we are seeing, so the actual number Kimmel gets won't change our lives. The 89th Academy Awards will air live on Sunday, February 26 on ABC. Want more stuff like this? 'Stranger Things' Season 2 Is Giving Nancy 'Drastic' New Hair Posted: Run, Nancy! Save your hair while you can! "Stranger Things" Season 2 will further explore the Upside Down, but it's the hair that will be full of secrets. The Netflix series is now shooting its second season, advancing the story slightly to set it in the mid-1980s. Refinery29 recently had a great interview with the show's lead hairstylist, Sarah Hindsgaul, and she teased a lot of teased hair ahead in the 2017 season, including a "drastic" new big hair look for Nancy Wheeler:
"A big hair turn" -- like maybe a temporary makeover gone wild, or will she keep it? These are not exactly major spoiler plot points (unless they are) but we're curious. No one got out of the '80s unscathed, in terms of fashion, and it sounds like actress Natalia Dyer may be the latest victim. Speaking of Season 2 "spoilers," though, Hindsgaul corrected one hair-shaving rumor she saw working the web:
So whatever else happens in Season 2, expect the hair game to be big and drastic, from the lead characters to the background players. Read the full interview for a lot more. Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
HBO Denies Suing 13-Year-Old Over 'Game of Thrones' Fan Art Posted: Copyright law misunderstandings are coming! It made for a juicy headline, if nothing else: "'HBO can shove it where the sun doesn't shine': Father's fury after Game of Thrones threatens to SUE his daughter, 13, girl for using the phrase 'winter is coming' in her art project." Tyrion Lannister would appreciate that kind of spice, but HBO did not. Mad dad Jonathan Wilcox lashed out at HBO and "Game of Thrones" on behalf of his daughter, Felicity Wilcox, 13, telling the Daily Mail of the U.K. that HBO threatened to sue his autistic daughter over her art competition. She got an email warning saying she faced legal action for copyright from HBO unless she removed the phrase "Winter is Coming." Papa Wilcox used some colorful phrases to blast HBO for "picking on a 13-year-old girl." But not so fast! HBO fired back, saying they did not threaten Wilcox with a lawsuit, and the email did not come from them. Turns out, young Felicity had joined an artwork competition on the website Redbubble, and HBO pointed to that site as the point of issue. Here's HBO's statement (via Entertainment Weekly)
EW further reported that the complaint received by Wilcox shows it was issued by Redbubble, not HBO. Redbubble was apparently just covering its own butt in case HBO decided to come after them. But the details got lost in the shuffle in favor of the idea that HBO might be out there bullying creative teens. Not yet! Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. Goodbye, Sasha? 'Walking Dead' Star Lands 'Star Trek: Discovery' Lead Posted: How good do you have to be to fight in the zombie apocalypse and travel through space at the same time? Sonequa Martin-Green is going to try. She plays Sasha on "The Walking Dead" but Entertainment Weekly just revealed she has been cast in the lead role of the CBS All Access series "Star Trek: Discovery," playing lieutenant commander of the Discovery. "The Walking Dead" finished filming Season 7 in November, but it should pick back up in May and film Season 8 in Georgia until next November. Meanwhile, Collider said "Discovery" will shoot in Toronto. There definitely seems to be some time from November to May when Martin-Green could fit in "Star Trek" filming, but she's meant to be the lead character of this series, and every time a new TWD star gets a lead role somewhere else, it means their character is leaving the AMC show. However, EW reported that "Martin-Green will continue to serve as a series regular on AMC's zombie drama, where she has played the tough pragmatic survivor Sasha Williams since Season 3." But the PR folks have to tell them that. It's not like they could tell the site, "Yeah, she's leaving TWD. Sasha is toast." The CBS All Access show's original showrunner Bryan Fuller told EW that Martin-Green's character is a "lieutenant commander with caveats." He explained, "We've seen six series from the captain's point of view. To see a character from a [new] perspective on the starship — one who has different dynamic relationships with a captain, with subordinates, it gave us richer context." "Star Trek: Discovery" premieres in May. Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
