Watch 'Sherlock' Star Amanda Abbington Talk Mary's Huge Season 3 Twist

Posted:

'Sherlock' Screening Of The 2016 Christmas SpecialWe've been promised a dark "Sherlock" Season 4, and that should come as no surprise after the events of Season 3 -- especially the unveiling of Mary Watson's huge secret in Episode 3: "His Last Vow."

In a new featurette released Wednesday by PBS, Amanda Abbington opens up about her character's big twist and what made it so interesting.

*If you haven't seen the episode, there are spoilers ahead.*

"Sherlock" fans weren't the only ones shocked to find out that Mary was actually an assassin -- and one capable of shooting the titular detective (Benedict Cumberbatch) at that. The actress herself only discovered the secret while reading through Episode 3 with her co-star Martin Freeman. The twist "pulled the rug out" from underneath her, she says, but she ultimately liked how it worked out.

"I think the payoff in Episode 3 is bigger and more powerful because you didn't know that that's what she was going to be," she says in the video.

Unfortunately, she didn't reveal any of the surprises ahead in "Sherlock" Season 4, but we'll see them play out when the first episode premieres on Jan. 1 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Masterpiece on PBS.

The '2016: The Movie' Trailer Parodies The Horror of a Year We've Had

Posted:

There are years that live larger than others, like 1999 and its Y2K madness. In case there was any question, 2016 has become one of them as well. The proof? A new parody video called "2016: The Movie."

Created by Friend Dog Studios, a comedy trio composed of Brian Huther, Ben Auxier, and Seth Macchi, the video is a spoof horror movie trailer that examines the beast of a year we've had. It touches on the lowlights of 2016, including the death of Harambe the gorilla, the shocking turns in politics around the world, and the slew of tragic celebrity deaths.

"It's like things you never expect are happening everywhere," says one of the characters in the video.

The year itself seems to be one of the villains, alongside another -- wearing what looks a whole lot like a Donald Trump mask -- and they show up to wreak havoc on the poor, confused characters. Along the way, there are also classic horror elements that add to the hilarity, from children singing to a montage of brutal weapons.Let's hope this thing is wrong and the worst of 2016 is behind us.

How Vincent D'Onofrio Conjured His 'Emerald City' Wizard

Posted:

Emerald City - Season 1As an actor, Vincent D'Onofrio has long been great and powerful -- and now he's the great and powerful Oz.

NBC's ambitious, expectation-bending new series, "Emerald City," which bows Jan. 6, challenges the pop cultural perception of author L. Frank Baum's long beloved series of novels set in the land of Oz as largely defined by the classic 1939 musical "The Wizard of Oz" -- the series takes Baum's fantastical realm and hints of political allegory and replaces its fairy tale qualities with a harder-edged, "Game of Thrones" --flavored sensibility.

And that includes the show's interpretation of the Wizard: he's still a man from the earthly realm who found his way to Oz and achieved a position of tremendous power, but he's also a haunted, lonely, isolated figure with an enigmatic agenda and precarious hold on his position.

And as D'Onofrio -- who still expects to revive his acclaimed portrayal of "Daredevil's" Kingpin, Wilson Fisk, very soon -- reveals to Moviefone it's another opportunity to subtly shade a role that's existed in the pop conscious in a less complex incarnation.

Moviefone: When you get offered a role like this, I'm sure it comes with a lot of thoughts like, "Well, OK. We know the movie. We know that there's a bunch of books by L. Frank Baum. What are we bringing to the table?" How did you wrap your head around what you were all doing, since this was such a fresh take -- and what you wanted to bring to it?

Vincent D'Onofrio: I was fortunate to come in late. I heard that [filmmaker/producer] Tarsem [Singh] was doing it, so I asked Tarsem if I could play the Wizard. I hadn't even read the script ... [then] I read a few of them, so my entry into the whole story and how I realized it was through the character of the Wizard: how we could take it further than he was in the original script?

And they reacted so positively to it and started writing immediately. We were talking about all different aspects and how far we could go with it, his psychology and why he is the way he is, what makes him the fraud that he is in the original, but what really makes him that, whether it's issues with self-worth and things like this. So we got pretty far deep into that, and I was reading, reading, reading.

I just loved that the take that I had on the Wizard as I was reading, I realized that that was the movie. You get to learn page by page who the Lion is, who the Tin Man is, who Dorothy is. And you're like, "Oh sh*t. That's the Lion! He's going to be the Lion on that." "That guy's going to turn into the Tin Man!" But you knew this through their emotional makeup as human beings, or as beings, and I thought that was fascinating.

So the more we dove into the character of the Wizard with Tarsem, and the more I read, and finally I read the whole 10 hours of it, I was so immersed in the world. I couldn't wait to start. I'd come up with the voice. We'd do a couple of different things. He has different voices at different times, and he has a different look in public than he does in private. It was very interesting stuff.

Once you got to work, and you also had the costumes and his environment to play with and help inform you, tell me a little bit about how they affected you and what you wanted to do.

I really try hard not to stick my nose in everybody's business. I really try hard. But when you have such an amazing project like this, you can't help but never stop thinking about it. So even the way we approached the wardrobe, it's kind of in a way Falstaffian, in a way at times. I wanted that kind of Shakespeare [feel], like maybe an actor from, like, the '70s, a British actor in the '70s, doing Shakespeare. Like with the weird hair, and with the wigs and everything. I really wanted to do that kind of a thing.

They just loved the idea. At one point in the show, I'm wearing a bald cap, a wig on top of the bald cap, and then a wig on top of that. So there's the bald cap which is supposed to be me, really, and there's a wig on top of that, which is supposed to be really the Wizard's hair, and bald cap, and then a wig that everybody knows is not the Wizard's hair on top of that. So you get to go deeper and deeper into his psyche and what makes him up.

We took the idea of -- in the original "Wizard of Oz," in the movie, anyway, the musical -- how they project that image that he has, that image projector. Instead of projecting image, in this he brings the image forward.

Obviously, the Baum work has proven to be timeless over 100 years. Did you see something sort of allegorical in this interpretation that was really relevant to us today?

All of my life -- and everybody else's life as well, obviously -- there are always different factions in society. As you get older and you start to become more and more aware and realize what these factions stand for, these ideologies and these beliefs, you start to understand the scope of society better, and how things change the world, and how lands like Oz or a city like Emerald City, or a country like ours, the countries in Europe and all over the world, how they move into being far right and far left, and being military and non-military, and forming alliances with other countries that sometimes people end up backing out of.

All that goes on in Oz, just like it does here. All of it. Everything that I just said goes on. And you just hope for the best, like we do in real life. You just hope that, in the end, people are good, and that people really prefer to be calm inside themselves, and that's their favorite thing. So you just have to hope that in Oz that that's going on as well. That in the end, people are going to prefer for there not to be war, and there not to be overt manipulation, and a lot of lying going on and a lot of behind the scenes deals being made. So it's pretty relevant.

This is another seemingly larger than life but very rooted in reality character you've gotten to play for TV, "Daredevil's" Wilson Fisk being the most recent before the Wizard. Tell me what you liked about that character, and how you see these men, like the Wizard and like Wilson Fisk. It would be easy to be caricature-ish with them, but you find a way to make them feel real.

It's always interesting. I'm sure you can relate to this, you're a writer: we all have things that we create. Some of them are on bigger scales than others, but so what? It's still just about ourselves creating a certain thing. So to hear people talk about him in the way that you are, it's very interesting to me because the only answer I can really give you to that is that it's my job, and I approach it in a very kind of academic kind of way.

I'm not a very romantic actor in the sense that I don't live the characters. I used to when I was young. Now that I have kids and a family, and I hope to be a good father, I have to leave it behind me when I go home, the characters. So, for instance, who Wilson Fisk is comes from a single emotion in my life. One very specific emotion. I won't tell you what that is, but it's a very particular emotion that happened during an event in my life at one point, and that's where his voice comes from. It comes through that all the time, like it never doesn't. And that's what makes him who you see him as.

Then you take a guy like the Wizard, it's the hiding behind the character. It's the cloak that we put over ourselves when we don't want to be seen. It's a very interesting subject, especially for an actor to deal with. I'm not a kid anymore. I've played, I wouldn't be able to tell you how many roles I've played. This is something that's become part of my life, cloaking, disappearing, and there's a price to be paid for that. So the Wizard character comes from that. So that's the only way I can answer your question.

What's got you excited about returning to the Marvel Universe?

I always want to be there. Honestly, I'm the biggest kid in the world when it comes to that. James Gunn and I have been tweeting back and forth to each other -- I really want to work with him. A good friend of mine is Chris Pratt. We've done two films together. He's just an awesome guy. We want to work together again.

Then there's this Netflix Marvel thing that I'm doing. I'm always talking to [Marvel's Head of Television] Jeph Loeb over there about what we're going to do next, and when. I just love it. I, of course, am not allowed to talk about anything in particular. But I know for sure that they love Fisk over there, and that Fisk will be back. When is that going to happen? I have no idea.

I'm as bad as my kids when it comes to movies. Like I'm dying to see a few movies, like "Nocturnal Animals," right? But I also want to see "Wonder Woman." That's what I'm saying: I'm dying to see "Wonder Woman." I'm dying to see these other films as well. But I'm as big a kid as my kids are when it comes to these movies.

And, of course, the comic book Wilson Fisk began as a "Spider-Man" villain. How great would it be to play the Kingpin against Tom Holland?

If it's part of that story, yeah. It'd be awesome.

Ryan Gosling Reunites With 'La La Land' Director for Neil Armstrong Biopic

Posted:

Ryan Gosling And Emma Stone Hand And Footprint CeremonyAfter finding success with "La La Land," actor Ryan Gosling and director Damien Chazelle are launching another joint project.

Gosling has signed on to star in "First Man," an upcoming biopic about Neil Armstrong, the first astronaut to walk on the moon, reports THR. The actor finalized an official deal in December after roughly a year of circling the Chazelle-directed film. Apparently, Gosling finally gave in to its gravitational pull.

The project boasts other high-profile players as well, including screenwriter Josh Singer ("Spotlight"). His script is adapted from the astronaut's authorized biography, "First Man: The Life of Neil A. Armstrong," written by James Hansen. As such, it will center on the moon-landing mission, which culminated in Armstrong's historic "giant leap for mankind" on July 20, 1969.

Gosling and Chazelle proved to be a strong combination with 2016's "La La Land." Not only did each earn a Golden Globe nomination for their work on the film, Gosling was nominated for a SAG Award. The musical has inspired Oscar buzz and may garner a nod -- or multiple -- come January.

Beyond working well together, Gosling seems to enjoy Chazelle's approach to filmmaking. He previously recounted the story of their first meeting to Awardsline and revealed what he discovered over drinks with the director.

"The drunker we got, the more passionate Damien got about making movies that you couldn't watch on your phone," Gosling said. "He wanted to make films that people would want to go see in a theater, with an audience."

We'll see if they can do that again with "First Man."

'Star Wars' Fans Honor Carrie Fisher with Lightsaber Vigils Across the US

Posted:

Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds Lightsaber Vigil"Star Wars" fans have turned to the Force to pay tribute to the late Carrie Fisher. After her death on Tuesday, they quickly rallied to plan lightsaber vigils in various locations around the United States.

One vigil, held Wednesday in Anaheim, California, brought together a couple hundred fans, according to Rolling Stone. Many came armed with toy lightsabers to express their grief and honor the "Force Awakens" star, who died days after having a heart attack aboard an LA-bound flight. Jeff Rowan, the organizer of the event, described it as "fitting" celebration of the actress-slash-writer.

"I decided that I think we should be paying homage to her and a lightsaber vigil was very fitting -– even though technically she never really even carried a lightsaber," he said.

Technically accurate or not, the toys made for a beautiful, if bittersweet, sight, as seen below in an image from Red Hare Images.

Meanwhile, similar vigils were also held at by multiple locations of the Alamo Drafthouse theater chain, and fans have created a star for Fisher on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. It's clear that she'll be missed.

Lindsay Lohan Really Wants to Make 'Mean Girls 2'

Posted:

Lindsay Lohan is serious about reprising her role as Cady Heron in a "Mean Girls" sequel. So much so, in fact, that the actress has taken the liberty of writing a treatment for the hypothetical sequel herself.

Lohan dished about her desire to make fetch "Mean Girls 2" happen in an interview with CNN on Facebook Live on Thursday. When asked about the prospect of making more comedies, Lohan said she'd "love" to take a crack at another "Mean Girls" feature.

"I have been trying so hard to do a 'Mean Girls 2,'" the actress said, acknowledging that the right people have to sign off on the project before anything can officially happen.

"It is not in my hands," she continued. "I know that Tina Fey, and Lorne Michaels, and all of Paramount -- everyone is very busy. But I will keep forcing it and pushing it on them until we do it."

Lohan also had a couple suggestions for new additions to the follow-up flick, citing "Freaky Friday" costar Jamie Lee Curtis and longtime pal Jimmy Fallon as potential cast members. And according to the actress, original director Mark Waters would "happily come back" to direct the sequel.

"I've already written a treatment for it," Lohan said. "So I just need a response."

Fey is currently hard at work on the "Mean Girls" musical, which is set to premiere in Washington, D.C. sometime next year. But here's hoping she has some time for a three-way calling attack phone call from Lohan to discuss the possibility.

'Girl Meets World' Has 'Ended,' According to Rider Strong

Posted:

Disney Channel's "Girl Meets World" - Season TwoIts future was already up in the air, with no fourth season renewal announced, but is "Girl Meets World" really ending for good? According to one cast member, the answer, sadly, is yes.

That's the word from Rider Strong, who plays Shawn Hunter on the Disney Channel show, a sequel to '90s series "Boy Meets World." Strong, who also played Shawn on the original series, has been a recurring character throughout the entire run of "Girl," which is currently slated to wrap its third season in January.

During a recent episode of his podcast, Literary Disco, Strong had some sobering words for "Girl" fans. Without saying so definitively, Strong indicated that the series had come to its conclusion.

"We finished the third season of 'Girl Meets World' — my brother and I were directing a lot of episodes and I acted in a couple — and the show ended," Strong said on the podcast.

Deadline reports that that statement is in line with what the trades have been hearing about the show's future, and that the series is all but cancelled:

Sources say that Disney Channel has not officially notified the cast and crew of the show's future but no renewal is expected and the upcoming Jan. 20 third season finale, aptly titled "Girl Meets Goodbye", would serve as a series finale.

That episode, which was originally scheduled to run in August before being pushed to January, features a massive "Boy Meets World" reunion, with a dozen original cast members appearing. If this truly is the end for "Girl," at least it will go out on a high note.

New episodes of "Girl Meets World" return to Disney Channel on January 6, 2017. The season three finale airs on January 20, 2017.

Carrie Fisher Will Appear in Two New 'Family Guy' Episodes

Posted:

Carrie Fisher Book Signing For "The Princess Diarist"After the sudden death of Carrie Fisher, who died this week at the age of 60, many of the actress's upcoming projects were left in limbo. Now, another Fisher appearance in a television series has been confirmed for a posthumous release.

Variety reports that Fisher's voice will be heard in two new, upcoming episodes of animated Fox series "Family Guy," in performances recorded before her death. The actress will once again reprise her recurring role of Angela, the supervisor of Peter Griffin (Seth MacFarlane) at the brewery where he works.

Angela has appeared in 20 episodes of "Family Guy" so far, after Fisher debuted the character back in 2005. The most recent episode to feature her voice aired on December 4. It's unclear when the next two episodes with Fisher are set to premiere, but they're most likely due out sometime in 2017.

MacFarlane tweeted out his condolences after Fisher's passing on Tuesday, calling the actress "smart, funny, talented, [and] surprising," adding, "Family Guy will miss her immensely."

Fisher's work on "Family Guy" is just the latest project that will feature a posthumous performance from the actress, after it was confirmed that she also filmed an upcoming episode of the Amazon series "Catastrophe," in which she played the recurring role of Mia, Rob Delaney's character's mother. Fisher had also completed filming on "Star Wars: Episode VIII" earlier this year; that film is due out in December 2017, though her involvement in the next installment, "Episode IX," has yet to be determined.

Fisher suffered a massive heart attack while on a flight from London to Los Angeles on December 23. She died at a Los Angeles hospital on December 27.

Read Mark Hamill's Touching Tribute to 'Beloved Space Twin' Carrie Fisher

Posted:

The Midnight Mission Golden Heart Awards Gala - ArrivalsWhen news first broke earlier this week about the death of Carrie Fisher -- "Star Wars" star, successful writer and author, mental health advocate, and all-around badass -- her "Star Wars" castmate Mark Hamill was at a loss for words, writing on Twitter only that he was "devastated." But Hamill was eventually able to collect his thoughts, and has since shared a beautiful tribute to his onscreen sister, one of many heartfelt statements the extended Lucasfilm family has offered in the days since her passing.

What makes Hamill's words stand out in particular, though, is the unique position that he -- and fellow original trilogy costar Harrison Ford -- was in as one of the leads of one of the biggest film franchises of all time, right alongside Fisher. Hamill and Fisher more or less grew up together, under an intense international spotlight, and their onscreen bond extended far offscreen, too.

"She played such a crucial role in my professional and personal life, & both would have been far emptier without her," Hamill wrote on Twitter on Tuesday. "I am grateful for the laughter, the wisdom, the kindness & even the bratty, self-indulgent crap my beloved space-twin gave me through the years."

The actor also called Fisher "irreplaceable," and it's hard to argue with that assessment, both of her as an actress (her future as Leia in upcoming "Star Wars" installments has yet to be determined), as well as a beloved public figure and personal friend to many. We'll miss you, Princess.

Tom Hardy Is Back from the Dead in Intense 'Taboo' Trailer

The new trailer for "Taboo" promises "pure drama," and it looks like the upcoming limited series will deliver.

Starring Tom Hardy, the miniseries follows James Keziah Delaney, a man believed to be dead who returns to London to claim his inheritance. This isn't exactly the return of the prodigal son, though. James finds a dark legacy, a host of enemies, and the threat of death.

The trailer, released Saturday by the BBC, shows what a treacherous course the character has ended up on. There's revenge to be had, not to mention violence and betrayals ahead. We see glimpses of it all in the preview, and let's just say that it is intense.

"Taboo" is created by Steven Knight with Hardy and his father, Chips Hardy, who serves as consulting producer. The series will run for eight episodes, the first of which airs in the U.S. on Jan. 10 on FX.

Rob Kardashian Hospitalized After 'Medical Distress': Report

Posted:

Rob Kardashian And Blac Chyna At Sky Beach ClubThe Kardashian family got scary news Wednesday: Rob Kardashian was reportedly hospitalized.

Sources tell TMZ that the "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" and "Rob & Chyna" star went into "medical distress" after his diabetes "flared up." As a result, he checked himself into the hospital, where he spent Wednesday night. His mother, Kris Jenner, and fiancée, Blac Chyna, reportedly joined him there, arriving separately.

Kardashian was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in mid-2015, and then hospitalized due to complications with the disease that December. As he revealed to People magazine in August 2016, he'd been neglecting to take his insulin because he "didn't enjoy the routine." However, getting sick was a wake-up call; he said he worked hard to control his health, to the point that he was diabetes-free at the time of the interview.

Sadly, that seems to no longer be the case. TMZ's sources claim that the stress of his relationship with Chyna has inspired him to overeat, in turn making him extremely ill. He bounced back before, though, so here's hoping for a speedy recovery.

'Bachelor' Fan Jimmy Kimmel to Host a Special Following the Season 21 Premiere

ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live" - Season 13Crashing dates on "The Bachelor" just isn't enough for Jimmy Kimmel anymore.

The late-night show host is going to host a primetime special dedicated to Season 21 of the long-running reality series, reports Variety. Called "Jimmy Kimmel Live: Here for the Right Reasons," the special will air immediately following the new season's premiere. ABC hasn't revealed what we should expect, but Variety sources say there will be reactions to the first episode, including Kimmel's predictions on who is poised to make the final four as well as be the ultimate winner.

It also seems possible that the Bachelor himself, Nick Viall, may appear. Kimmel makes no secret of the fact that he's a fan of the show and has been known to bring members of Bachelor Nation on to "Jimmy Kimmel Live." That is on top of appearing on "The Bachelor" to talk roses and dole out advice.

Clearly, Kimmel is hosting the special for the right reasons. We'll get to see how it goes on ABC on Jan. 2 at 10 p.m. ET/PT, and then again at 11:35 p.m.

HBO's Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds Documentary Shows 'Unbreakable' Bond

Posted:

21st Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards - Press RoomThe back-to-back deaths of actresses Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher give new meaning to an upcoming HBO documentary on the mother-daughter duo.

While the project, "Bright Lights: Starring Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds," was always intended to tell their story, it will now pay poignant tribute to their unique lives and bond. HBO Documentary Films President Sheila Nevins described the film as "a love story" in an interview with Variety after news of Reynolds's death broke Wednesday, just one day after Fisher herself died.

"Carrie wanted to make 'Bright Lights' for Debbie and Debbie wanted to make it for Carrie," she told the publication. "They just loved each other so much. The bond was just unbreakable."

The film was largely filmed roughly a year ago and centers on their relationship as they dealt with their personal ups and downs. "It's life with Carrie and Debbie," said Nevins. "It's about both of them trying to stand upright, both having their frailties -- age on the one hand and mental illness on the other."

"Bright Lights" was screened at the New York Film Festival in October and in Cannes in May, but an official HBO premiere date has not been set. Given the tragic turn, Nevins made it clear that premium network will be mindful in moving forward.

Debbie Reynolds Dies 1 Day After Daughter Carrie Fisher's Death

Posted:

21st Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards - Press RoomAs if there haven't been enough celebrity deaths in 2016, the year has claimed one more Hollywood icon.

Actress, singer, and dancer Debbie Reynolds, the mother of the recently deceased Carrie Fisher, was hospitalized Tuesday, Dec. 28, and the news sadly has only gotten worse. Reynolds' son, Todd Fisher, revealed hours later that she died of a stroke, reports TMZ. She was 84.

A triple threat, Reynolds made a name for herself at just 19 years old by starring in the 1952 film "Singin' in the Rain," arguably one of the greatest musicals ever made. Her career was prolific and spanned film, TV, music, and the stage. Some of her notable work includes roles in the movies "Bundle of Joy" and "The Unsinkable Molly Brown," as well as her stint on "The Debbie Reynolds Show" and her pop music album "Debbie."

Reynolds captured attention with her personal life as well as her professional one. Her first marriage, to Eddie Fisher, the father of her two children, ended after his high-profile affair with Elizabeth Taylor. She went on to marry twice more, with both marriages ending in divorce.

"There are very few women from her generation who worked like that, who just kept a career going all her life and raised children and had horrible relationships and lost all her money and got it back again," said Fisher of her mother during a November interview with WHYY's "Fresh Air" host Terry Gross. "She's had an amazing life, and she's someone to admire."

Recently, Reynolds had been struggling with her daughter's death from a heart attack on Dec. 27.

"She spoke to me this morning and said she missed Carrie," said Todd Fisher Tuesday, according to CNN. "She's with Carrie now."
