The Geek Beat: 'Doctor Strange' Stories That Would Make Good Sequel Material Posted: 08 Nov 2016 09:00 PM PST Marvel Studios' Doctor Strange had a premiere fitting for comics' Sorcerer Supreme, but now that the surgeon-turned-superhero's origin story is in theaters, it's natural to wonder what the future holds for Stephen Strange. Given that many of the major players from Doctor Strange's universe were introduced in director Scott Derrickson's live-action film, there's no shortage of stories available to serve as source material for sequels. Whether the sequel has Benedict Cumberbatch's character tangling with the dread entity Dormammu or his former colleague Baron Mordo (played by Chiwetel Ejiofor in the film), there's a cornucopia of established adventures that draw from the well of characters the movie has already established. With over 50 years'... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
The Funny Reason 'Independence Day' Has That Title Posted: 08 Nov 2016 07:00 PM PST Moviegoers didn't flock to Independence Day: Resurgence, but the sequel will likely do well enough on home video and find some more fans there (it's really not that bad). And the original Independence Day will continue to be a classic of the alien invasion subgenre. In a new interview at The Guardian promoting the UK DVD release of the follow-up, much of the focus was on that first movie, and one of the more interesting revelations is how Independence Day got that title. "We wrote the concept around the release date," director and co-writer Roland Emmerich explains. They needed to hit that mark in order to beat Tim Burton's Mars Attacks! into theaters, not just to be the first alien invasion flick of the summer but to... The 'Trollhunter' Remake Is Probably Never Happening Posted: 08 Nov 2016 05:00 PM PST Back in 2011 Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone director Chris Columbus optioned the rights to the fantastic fantasy movie Trollhunter. Columbus wanted to produce an English language remake of the Norwegian movie about a guy whose secret government job sees him protecting his nation from trolls, big and small. At one point Neil Marshall (The Descent, Doomsday) was even attached to direct it. Things were looking up. And then radio silence until today's news, which is a bummer for anyone looking forward to an English language version. It's not happening. Original Trollhunter director Andre Øvredal broke the news to Birth.Movies.Death.. Columbus' original option on the film ended, with the rights going back to the original filmmakers. And... 'American Werewolf in London' Remake From Max Landis on Its Way Posted: 08 Nov 2016 12:00 PM PST Released in August 1981, An American Werewolf in London was the third major werewolf movie of the year. Coming after Joe Dante's terrific The Howling and Michael Wadleigh's spooky Wolfen, some wondered what John Landis could bring to the table, especially after the excesses of his previous comedy, The Blues Brothers. Landis has noted that Universal's classic monster movies were the first monsters he saw as a child in the 1950s and his original screenplay paid homage to them, even as he created a new mythology for werewolves. He mixed black comedy into a horror stew and sprinkled a bit of romance on top, producing a fresh vision revolving around a hapless college student (David Naughton) who survives a horrible attack only to find himself transforming into a murderous...
