Webber Plays a Personal Game in Tense 'Grey's Anatomy' Season 13 Sneak Peek Posted: Emotions will get so strained in "Grey's Anatomy" Season 13, Episode 8, "The Room Where It Happens," you could cut the tension with a scalpel. The episode promo (watch below) is set in the operating room, showing Dr. Meredith Grey pulling rank on both Dr. Richard Webber and Dr. Owen Hunt, as the voice-over ominously warns, "A power struggle could have deadly consequences." In the new sneak peek, we see Webber quizzing Dr. Stephanie Edwards on the "John Doe" he, Stephanie, Owen, Meredith are working on. Stephanie starts talking about the patient's injuries, and Webber interrupts to ask more about him as a person, saying they don't know if the man had a family, if he was a "good" guy or a "bad" guy. So Webber says they're going to play a game. They'll "make" the patient someone, anyone they want, but not a John Doe. No one else seems to be on his wavelength -- Owen thinks he's wasting their time -- but they may come around to his way of thinking ... once he explains his way of thinking. It doesn't seem like they should need to know or care about the patient's personal history, but this may be what takes the characters into their own pasts, bringing those personal experiences into the OR. The episode synopsis hints to a direction like that. Here's the ABC synopsis:

Ezra Miller: 'The Flash' Losing Two Directors Is Like 'a Tragic Relay Race' Posted: "The Flash" director is the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. The job is cursed. Ezra Miller is still set to play Barry Allen/The Flash in DC's solo film, currently scheduled for a March 2018 debut. At this point, the film needs a new director, after losing Seth Grahame-Smith and then, just recently, Rick Famuyiwa. They both left due to "creative differences," which is the Hollywood version of "irreconcilable differences." It'll be interesting to see how the film's focus and tone shift going forward, since the director usually has a pretty big say. Collider talked to Ezra Miller while he was promoting "Fantastic Beasts," and he had a thoughtful take on the departures:
"Tragic relay race" is such a lovely way to put it. Miller's The Flash was first seen briefly in "Batman v Superman" and "Suicide Squad," and the "Justice League" trailer previewed his larger role in that film, which arrives this time next year. And then hopefully DC's "The Flash" can keep to its current schedule to make its March 16, 2018 release date. Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. 'Fantastic Beasts' Director Explains Why Johnny Depp Was Cast as Grindelwald Posted: Why him? Johnny Depp is playing the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald in a cameo in "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them," and in a larger role in the second of five planned movies. "Fantastic Beasts" director David Yates and producer David Heyman -- longtime "Harry Potter" team members -- talked to The Leaky Cauldron about what's ahead for the franchise, and explained why Depp was chosen for this "iconic" role. Here's what director David Yates told the site:
Here's more on Depp from producer David Heyman:
Unexpected choices. Yes. Yates confirmed to the site that the "beasts" of the title currently feature slightly less in the second film, "and Grindelwald takes more of a foreground. Currently. But we love the beasts so much. There's an amazing beast in the second movie–a Chinese beast, actually–that is featured. We're exploring how we can get a couple more beasts into the second film, with Jo." Jo is obviously author/screenwriter/Potter queen J.K. Rowling. Yates said the second "Fantastic Beasts" film will primarily take place in Paris and the U.K. "I'm not sure where Jo is setting the rest of the movies, but they'll be European-centric. I think it will be difficult to ignore America, but the next one is predominately Europe." And you probably saw that they are now casting for a younger Dumbledore, opposite Grindelwald. That should be an interesting dynamic to watch moving forward, as the story shifts across the pond. The first "Fantastic Beasts" movie opens Friday, November 18. Want more stuff like this? Joe Manganiello: Ben Affleck's 'The Batman' Is Fresh, Surprising, Cerebral Posted: Joe Manganiello is a total Batfleck fanboy, and he can't wait to start shooting his role as the villain of Ben Affleck's solo film, "The Batman." Joe Manganiello will play Deathstroke in the DC movie, which starts shooting next year. The "True Blood" alum talked about his relationship to the DCEU in a podcast with Mark Madden, transcribed via Reddit. Manganiello said he couldn't play Superman in "Man of Steel" because of his "True Blood" contract, but he created a relationship with the director and studio. Once the HBO series was over, they came back to talk to him, and now he'll be the villain in "The Batman," which features Affleck as star, screenwriter, and director. Here's more of Manganiello's Batman conversation with Madden:
That's good to hear, and hopefully it's not just PR spin from a guy who booked a role in the movie. Affleck does have a decent track record as a director, and an Oscar for co-writing "Good Will Hunting." And his Bruce Wayne/Batman in "Batman v Superman" got a solid reaction from fans. So we'll stay cautiously optimistic until the movie actually comes out ... whenever that will be. [via: ComicBookMovie] Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. This Fan Theory Connecting 'Gilmore Girls' & 'Friends' Almost Works Posted: Someone out there went full "Westworld" on "Friends" and "Gilmore Girls." The timelines don't completely add up in this fan theory -- which was actually posted on Reddit months ago and only just recently got picked up by whichever house elf is responsible for making stories go viral. Glamour shared the theory, which originated from Reddit user NotAnAverageTaunTaun in a thread called "[Gilmore Girls / Friends] Paris Geller is Rachel Green's redemption story."Yes, the theory surrounds Paris Geller of "Gilmore Girls," and directly links her name to Rachel Green's "Friends" storyline. Put on your tinfoil hat and read away:
The author acknowledges that she might be "grasping at straws" and could just be projecting her own frustration with Rachel's choice to not go for the Louis Vuitton job. One of the commenters basically shot the theory down, based on the characters's different personalities and the conflicting series timelines. As they wrote, "Friends also ended in 2004. That's when Rachel had the Paris thing going on. Gilmore Girls started in 2000. Paris was not named after Rachel's potential city of employment." Yeah, OK, but the theory can still live on in an alternate universe, like a sideways "Lost" situation. Don't crush the dreams of inventive fans, they are the ones keeping these shows alive year after year! Without them, we might not get things like the "Gilmore Girls" revival coming November 25 to Netflix. [via: Glamour] Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. 'Stranger Things' Season 2 Is About 'Struggle to Reclaim Normalcy' Posted: Poor Hawkins, Indiana will never be the same. "Stranger Things" Season 2 just started filming on Monday, November 7, and teases are already trickling out from the Upside Down. Collider recently talked to Shawn Levy, who confirmed the Season 2 start date, and discussed the plan for this season and (potentially) Season 3. Levy directed Season 1's third and fourth episodes and plans to do the same for Season 2. (Charlie Heaton, aka Jonathan Byers, said Episode 4 will be a particularly big one, so keep that in mind.) Season 2 will have nine episodes, one more than Season 1's eight. It has been reported that the story picks up a year later, to -- as Heaton recently put it -- let the story settle and acknowledge the real-life aging of the younger actors. Levy would not confirm the year time jump when talking about the timeline. He did, however, talk up the new characters joining the show, promising that fans will love them:
Yeah, poor Will Byers. That kid is messed up for life. But at least he has a life. (Unlike Barb.) On a happier note, Levy said he and the Duffer brothers are "optimistic" about Season 3, and are already thinking ahead about that story, for if/when Netflix does the obvious and gives it a green light. And since they started with eight episodes, then went up to nine, here's hoping Season 3 goes to 10. And then Season 4 can fulfill the destiny of "Stranger Things" by going to Eleven. Here's more about the new characters headed to Hawkins. "Stranger Things" Season 2 will be ready for streaming on Netflix in 2017. Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. 'The Walking Dead': 'Rick's Subservience' to Negan Not OK With All Alexandrians Posted: Poor Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) is like a whipped dog in "The Walking Dead" Season 7, and we're probably going to wince a few more times for him in this Sunday's supersized Episode 4. Papa Grimes is no longer The Ricktator or even just friendly neighborhood Sheriff Rick. He's Negan's (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) pet. We've already seen different reactions to Negan's takeover -- with Maggie and Sasha heading off to Hilltop, Daryl still refusing to bow to Negan, and Rick basically collapsing under the weight of his own responsibilities. He is Alexandria's leader; this whole deal with Hilltop to take out the Saviors -- he's the one who stood up and argued for it. The failure is on him, or at least he'll carry it, and it's even more his fault if anyone else dies ... or loses a hand. The promo for Episode 4 (see below) shows Rick making a new speech to the group, saying "I'm not in charge anymore; Negan is." That is tough to hear. We also see Lucille in Alexandria, and -- if they follow the comic -- Negan continues to make Rick look weak by having him hold on to Lucille while the Saviors scavenge Alexandria. Entertainment Weekly talked to director/executive producer Greg Nicotero on how Alexandria residents will react to what happened, and life under Negan's rule:
Good! The promo also shows Negan pulling a "remix" from the comic book with his "Little pig, little pig, let me in" line. That was said by a different group of bad guys at Alexandria's gate in the comic. Michonne also seems to be getting the comic book Andrea remix, including her place as a sniper. The katana queen is DEFINITELY not interested in being subservient, as you can see in one of the two sneak peeks from Episode 4. However, in the other sneak peek, we see Rosita and Spencer heading out to find supplies for Negan and the Saviors. Eugene also says he's working to find ways to "give them what they want." Here's AMC's synopsis for the November 13 episode, "Service," which is listed at 85 minutes (as opposed to the usual 60):
Here's the official promo:And here are the two sneak peeks:"The Walking Dead" Season 7 airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on AMC. Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Twitter's Election Day Vote Is Down to Regina George vs. Cady Heron Posted: Every day of the 2016 presidential campaign has felt like "Mean Girls" on a loop, but now that the big day is here, Twitter is trending Regina George for the win. Yes, on a day when most of the United States trends are #MyVote2016, #ElectionDay, #PostVotingStressRelief, GO VOTE TODAY, and Susan B Anthony, Rachel McAdams's ultimate Mean Girl found her way onto the list. Because she got hit by that bus. Lindsay Lohan's Cady Heron is not trending at this point, but others are voting for her. Because she pushed Regina George in front of that bus. Yes, we are a silly people. But there's a lot of time to kill on Election Day and it gets boring listening to the same self-serious pundits go on and on. So why not turn this into Regina vs. Cady and see if we can Make Fetch Happen? Here are some of the November 8 voter tweets:
What we should be doing is voting for Janis Ian. Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
The 'Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets' Trailer Will Blow Your Mind Posted: It's very easy to say that something is unlike anything you've ever seen before, especially since it's very rare that something (especially a major motion picture) can be all that different. But after watching the trailer for Luc Besson's upcoming sci-fi extravaganza "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets," it's very clear that the movie, which opens next summer, will be unlike anything you've ever seen before. If you've never heard of "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets," you've still probably been exposed to it (at least tangentially) -- the French comic books that the film is based on (Jean-Claude Mézières and Pierre Christin) are said to have influenced George Lucas when he was crafting the "Star Wars" series. So, you know, there's that. Based on this teaser trailer, though, it's a lot more outrageous, wacky, and fun than anything George cooked up. The trailer is brief and mostly dialogue-free. There's a truly incredible song backing the action that will probably blow your mind when you hear it, but Besson asked that we keep it a secret (for now). But pretty much from the very beginning your jaw will be on the floor. This movie looks like it crams an almost incalculable amount of science fiction-y stuff in it: robots, aliens (dozens of different species), monsters, glittering futuristic cities, spaceships (the main characters' signature ride was designed with the help of Lexus), characters running on beams of energy, different planets, and, of course, ray guns. There's one shot that's looking down towards the city and I swear to god there are flying carpets zooming past. (For those wondering, the majority of the visual effects were split between Weta and Industrial Light & Magic.)You get a sense of the playful, almost-romantic banter between intergalactic peace-keeping agents Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne), without ever getting into the narrative nitty gritty. And almost as eye-popping as the various aliens, spaceships, and robots, is an appearance by a positively radiant Rihanna, who as we all know is so perfect she might as well be an android. At the end of the tease comes a very delicious tag line: "A universe without boundaries needs heroes without limits." Aaaaaand is it Summer 2017 yet? After watching the trailer, we mingled with Besson, who was on hand to answer any questions and also to have some wine and cheese with a small assortment of journalist (he's French, after all!) The filmmaker said of "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets," "It's my dream sci-fi movie." And there's a sense that he has been working towards this film his entire career -- "The Fifth Element," which will be 20 years old by the time "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets" hits the big screen, felt like an initial stab at this kind of material. It, too, was inspired by French comic books (Mézières was often cited) and had a similarly decadent, larger-than-life aesthetic (those Jean Paul Gaultier costumes!) But it's not just "The Fifth Element" that "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets" calls to mind. There's also echoes of the absurdist humor that ran through things like "Angel-A" and "The Family," and the kind of harmonious one-love message of his brilliant "Lucy," which was sort of like Terrence Malick's contemplative "Tree of Life" but remade as a late-night direct-to-Cinemax action movie. And someone from Besson's EuropaCorp told us that the original comic books that inspired "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets" have largely informed Besson's entire career, from the way he writes rat-a-tat dialogue between actors to his fascination with a strong female central character. When I asked Besson about Alexandre Desplat's score for the film (which, honestly, seems like an odd tonal fit considering the composer's rather somber proclivities), since it was announced that he would be handling the music shortly after leaving similar duties on "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," Besson said he hadn't heard anything yet. "He starts this week," Besson explained. So while things that he had been tinkering with for "Star Wars" could end up in the mix for "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets" (and given how long Desplat was a part of "Rogue One," that seems likely), Besson hasn't heard a note. Besson has secured the rights to nine of the comic books in the series and will have a script for the second film by the time "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets" hits screens next summer (a trilogy has been fully mapped out, as of now), so if the movie turns out to be as awe-inspiring as the trailer suggests, there should be a lot more from the franchise coming your way very soon. But let's not get ahead of ourselves, here; for now let's all get really excited about "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets." (Between this and "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2," Summer 2017 is going to be full of really crazy space operas.) If two minutes of "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets" leaves you borderline speechless, imagine what the whole movie will do. Eddie Redmayne Auditioned to Play Kylo Ren and It Went Badly Posted: Eddie Redmayne may own an Oscar, but that doesn't make him the best choice for any role. The actor, now starring in "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them," has already admitted he had a "catastrophically bad" audition for "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." Most people assumed he'd tried out to play General Hux, the role that eventually went to Domhnall Gleeson. Instead, as Redmayne told Uproxx, he auditioned to play Kylo Ren! "So, I was going for, I think, for Adam Driver. They gave me like a 'Star Trek' scene — or like something from 'Pride and Prejudice.' It was one of those films. With films that top secret, they don't give you the actual lines," he explained. "So they give you a scene from 'Pride and Prejudice,' but then they tell you you're auditioning for the baddie." Redmayne read his lines with "some ridiculous voice" in front of casting director Nina Gold. "That was a hilarious moment," he said, adding, "And she was just sitting there and I was trying again and again with different versions of my kind of 'koohh paaaah' [Darth Vader breathing sound] voice. And after like 10 shots she's like, 'You got anything else?' I was like, 'No.'" It's OK, Eddie -- you may not get to go to a galaxy far, far away, but you can wield magic! Want more stuff like this? The Musicians Go Solo in 'Mozart in the Jungle' Season 3 Trailer Posted: You can't have harmony when everyone goes solo, as the first trailer for "Mozart in the Jungle" season 3 notes. Season 3 finds Rodrigo (Gael García Bernal), Hailey (Lola Kirke), Cynthia (Saffron Burrows), and the rest of their symphony family scattered to the winds after a lockout. Rodrigo journeys to Venice to conduct the long-awaited return concert of opera diva Alessandra (Monica Bellucci). Meanwhile, Hailey becomes disenchanted with her career as an oboeist as she tours across Europe — but discovers a new passion for conducting. It should be interesting to see all the players working apart from each other and exploring their individuality, even as some characters, like Bernadette Peters' Gloria, try to bring them back together again. García Bernal gets most of the spotlight in the trailer, hardly surprising considering he won a Golden Globe for his performance last year. And we're intrigued by the glimpses we see of Bellucci's opera diva. No doubt tempers (and passions) will flare. "Mozart in the Jungle" season 3 begins streaming Dec. 9 on Amazon. Amazon Picks Up Robert De Niro, Julianne Moore Crime Drama From David O. Russell Posted: Amazon is shelling out the big bucks once again to acquire a high-profile TV project. Just a couple weeks after the streaming service picked up "Mad Men" creator Matthew Weiner's next series for $70 million, it has landed an untitled drama created by David O. Russell ("Silver Linings Playbook," "American Hustle") and starring Oscar winners Robert De Niro and Julianne Moore, according to Deadline. This marks the second collaboration between Amazon and the Weinstein Company, which jointly will pay $160 million for two eight-episode seasons. De Niro reportedly will make $850,000 an episode. Not much is known about the series other than that it is a mafia crime drama. Like Weiner's project, it was heavily pursued by various networks, including FX. The series reunites Russell with his "Silver Linings Playbook" and "Joy" star, De Niro, who can next be seen playing Bernie Madoff in HBO's "Wizard of Lies." Moore, meanwhile, next stars in Todd Haynes' "Wonderstruck" on Amazon. Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
'Fantastic Beasts' Sequels Casting Young Dumbledore Posted: Dumbledore lives! At least the beloved wizard will live in the "Harry Potter" prequel series "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them." Fans have long speculated that a younger version of Albus Dumbledore would appear in the new series following Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne). Now, director David Yates confirms to Screenrant that this will be the case:
Dumbledore's inclusion in the "Fantastic Beasts" sequels (there are five planned) makes sense particularly since dark wizard Gellart Grindelwald figures to be the main villain. Before he was headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Dumbledore was the Transfiguration teacher. He was also a childhood friend of Grindelwald, and the two plotted to acquire all three of the powerful Deathly Hallows. Eventually, the two parted on bitter terms and Grindelwald began a career as a fearsome dark wizard. It would take -- spoiler alert -- an epic duel fought by Dumbledore to stop him. The question of who might play young Dumbledore is fascinating. The character was played by, first, Richard Harris, and then Michael Gambon in the "Harry Potter" movies. It seems Johnny Depp will play Grindelwald, so the actor should be around the same age. May we suggest keeping it in the family and cast Jared Harris (Richard's son)? Want more stuff like this?
