Interview: James L. Brooks and Kelly Fremon Craig Talk Their Fantastic Teen Comedy 'The Edge of Seventeen'

Posted: 18 Nov 2016 08:45 PM PST

It's remarkably tough to make an authentic teen comedy. It's all too easy for a filmmaker to fall into a trap where it feels like everything is written from an adult perspective, not an actual teenager's . It's a subtle line between the two, and knowing how to walk it is what made John Hughes the king of the teen comedy in the '80s. And knowing how to walk that line is what makes The Edge of Seventeen not just one of the best teen comedies in years, but one of the best films of 2016, full stop. Written and directed by Kelly Fremon Craig, The Edge of Seventeen is about Nadine (Hailee Steinfeld), whose already angry relationship with the world grows all the more bitter when her best friend (Haley Lu Richardson) starts dating her brother (Blake Jenner). And while...

Watch: 'X-Men' Actor Tye Sheridan Can Go Either Way in the Trailer for 'Detour'

Posted: 18 Nov 2016 07:30 PM PST

Three of the greatest young actors working today can be found in the new trailer for Detour. Tye Sheridan, now best known as Cyclops in X-Men: Apocalypse but best in Mud, heads the cast as a young law student considering having his stepfather murdered. Emory Cohen, who is brilliant in Brooklyn, is the hitman who might take that job. And Bel Powley, who broke out with The Diary of a Teenage Girl, is the hitman's stripper girlfriend. Detour could be described as a neo-noir (or even more specifically as desert-noir, and some reviews have called it '90s-throwback-noir), but no, it's not a remake of the 1945 film noir classic of the same name. Christopher Smith, who made the very twisty cult classic horror film Triangle, wrote and directed...

Watch: 'Kubo and the Two Strings' Behind-The-Scenes Video Shows Off Its Massive Sets

Posted: 18 Nov 2016 06:00 PM PST

Everyone knows that stop-motion animation takes an absolutely absurd amount of craftsmanship - and time - to make. There are a few ways that filmmakers can make the medium a bit easier to work in, though. Obviously keeping out crazy action sequences would be a good idea, but a simple production shortcut would be to keep things set mostly in the same locations so that your production stage isn't constantly undergoing drastic changes. Kubo and the Two Strings did neither of those things. It has crazy action sequences and tracks a journey that spreads across many wildly different locations. That may not seem like a big deal, but when you think about Laika's past movies, Kubo marked a more ambitious challenge than anything they'd done. Corpse Bride, Coraline...

Comics on Film: 5 Alternate Superhero Movie Cuts That Made a Difference

Posted: 18 Nov 2016 04:30 PM PST

This week marks the digital HD release of Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment’s Suicide Squad, the third film in the burgeoning DC Extended Universe. While generally well-liked amongst fans (read the Comics on Film review here), critics hammered writer/director David Ayer’s effort a little harder than even Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Similarly to BvS, though, Warner Bros. has made an “extended cut” of the new film available beginning this week, featuring a little bit more footage with Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, and Jared Leto’s incarnation of the Joker. Overall, the effect of the new footage is marginal at best, and doesn’t illuminate a whole lot of apparently cut scenes like many fans were hoping it would...

Watch: Even Nicolas Cage Can Barely Believe the Inspiration For 'Army of One'

Posted: 18 Nov 2016 03:00 PM PST

If the above image of Nicolas Cage's face doesn't already start to make you smile, Army of One may not be the right kind of movie for you. But if you're able to appreciate a wild, uninhibited Cage performance, then look no further than the latest movie from Borat and The Dictator director Larry Charles, which pretty much promises maximum Nic Cage. We've written about Army of One before, but on the chance it's just now hitting your radar, we have this handy clip that gives you the rundown on the true story that inspired a movie about a man trying to hunt down Osama Bin Laden with a sword. It's worth watching just to hear Cage sound like even he can't believe this is a real story. Army of One is out now on Blu-ray and DVD and is available on...

Willem Dafoe Says He'll Play a "Principal" Role in 'Aquaman'

Posted: 18 Nov 2016 01:30 PM PST

Back in April, we heard that Willem Dafoe would play an unspecified "good guy" in Justice League, without any details on what character that might be. This past summer, we began hearing that Dafoe would be portraying Nuidis Vulko, a trusted advisor to Aquaman (Jason Momoa), and would also be joining the cast of Aquaman as the same character. Now Dafoe has clarified the roles he will play in each movie. He told The Guardian: "Justice League is very particular because it’s an ensemble movie and my character is being introduced here in order to be a principal role in Aquaman." That suggests Nuidis Vulko may be something more than simply a science advisor in Aquaman.   The character first appeared in DC comics in 1967, establishing himself over time...
