Paul Feig to Direct Robot Clone Comedy 'Turned On'

Posted: 11 Nov 2016 07:30 PM PST

A brilliant person is too busy to handle all of the minutia of their day-to-day life, so they find some way to clone themselves. At first things start to go well. They're more productive, they've got more time to spend with loved ones. But then something happens with the clones. They malfunction and life suddenly becomes a hilarious nightmare. It's a tale as old as time. Or, you know, the 20th century. The cloning-gone-wrong comedy crops up every few years, sometimes on the big screen (Multiplicity), but more often on the small screen (Rick and Morty). Now it's circling back around to the big screen with Turned On, directed by the great Paul Feig (Spy, Ghostbusters) and written by Charlie Kesslering. This time around the twist is that the clone in question...

'Transformers' Bumblebee Spinoff Moving Ahead With Christina Hodson Script

Posted: 11 Nov 2016 06:00 PM PST

After Paramount announced an extended Transformers movie universe last year, the studio received criticism for not including any women in the mega-franchise's writers room. They quickly fixed that by adding three female screenwriters to the bunch, which were led by producer Akiva Goldsman. Now it turns out that wasn't just for show, and the idea was proven worthwhile, because one of those women wound up writing the first spinoff, which is focused on the Autobot character Bumblebee.  According to Deadline, Bumblebee is going forward with a script by Christina Hodson, who had been one of those late additions to the Transformers brain trust. She wrote the thriller Shut In, starring Naomi Watts and young Jacob Tremblay, which opens today, as...

New 'Live by Night' Trailer Thinks Powerful Men Don't Have to Be Cruel

Posted: 11 Nov 2016 04:30 PM PST

UPDATE 11/11/16: A second trailer for Live By Night has hit online. Check it out at the bottom of the post. Previously: Ten years ago, Ben Affleck resuscitated his sagging movie career, first by giving a finely-tuned performance as George Reeves (also known as Superman) in Hollywoodland and then by making Gone Baby Gone, a moody mystery that was his directorial debut, the following year. While Affleck is still best known as an actor, the films he's directed since then have reflected his growing talents and ambitions. The Town showed he could handle action as well as atmospheric drama and Argo introduced a lighter touch that fit the thrills of the 1980 U.S. hostage crisis in Iran. For his next movie as a director, Affleck is rewinding the clock far deeper into the past...

Comics on Film: Where Are the MCU's Infinity Stones?

Posted: 11 Nov 2016 03:00 PM PST

The latest chapter in the sprawling Marvel Cinematic Universe has come and gone, and we're inching ever closer to the breakout of Avengers: Infinity War in 2018. As any follower of the films knows, the path toward Infinity War began in the post-credits sequence of the MCU's first crossover film, 2012's The Avengers. It was there that we discovered that Thanos, known in the Marvel Comics Universe as the "Mad Titan" and the "Avatar of Death," was the primary power behind the Chitauri invasion of New York in the climax of that first crossover film, and it was that revelation that opened up the MCU to the possibilities of cosmic enemies for the heroes to fight: a promise followed upon effectively in...

Leonard Cohen, Whose Music Lives In So Many Movies, Has Passed Away

Posted: 11 Nov 2016 01:30 PM PST

Known primarily as a singer and songwriter, he began his creative career in the 1950s as a poet and novelist, eventually focusing his energies on music in 1967. His first album, Songs of Leonard Cohen, won a devoted audience. As he continued to record, his popularity grew, and his songs began appearing on television and in movies. Director Robert Altman used three of Cohen's songs in the landmark Western McCabe & Mrs. Miller.       Much later, Cohen's song "Everybody Knows" helped establish the moody atmosphere in Pump Up the Volume (1990).   In Oliver Stone's controversial drama Natural Born Killers, Cohen's "Waiting for the...
