Johnny Depp to Star in 'Fantastic Beasts' Sequel: Report

Posted:

'Alice Through The Looking Glass' PhotocallCaptain Jack Sparrow, meet Harry Potter?

According to Deadline, Johnny Depp will have a co-starring role in the second movie in the "Fantastic Beasts" series. They added that you might even be able to spot Depp in a cameo in the first movie, "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them," which opens November 18.

The site had no further details on Depp's role, they just "confirmed" that he would be in the sequel, which David Yates will direct early next year with Eddie Redmayne returning as Newt Scamander.

Author J.K. Rowling recently revealed that the "Fantastic Beasts" trilogy would actually be a five-film series set before the time of Harry Potter. The cast of the first film talked a bit more about that at EW Pop Fest, teasing what's ahead in the "epic" larger story of "good versus evil."

At a fan event in early October, it was revealed that the sequel setting will shift to a new prominent city other than New York City, and Grindelwald "is going to become a much more prominent part of the story going forward."

Speaking of Grindelwald, first film co-star Ezra Miller just shared a video tying "Fantastic Beasts" to the universe of the "Harry Potter" books, through that powerful dark wizard:

What does any of this have to do with Johnny Depp? No idea yet. You don't think he's Grindelwald, do you?

'UnREAL' Season 3 Will Follow First Bachelorette & Her Suitors

Posted:

Move over, fellas, "unREAL" Season 3 is going to add another female power player to the game. After two seasons of following "Everlasting" suitors, Quinn (Constance Zimmer) and Rachel (Shiri Appleby) will next work with a lady lead and the men cast to court her.

"We're so excited and looking forward to it," Appleby told Entertainment Tonight after the Lifetime team announced the Season 3 bachelorette news on Facebook Live. "I think it will be great to add another strong female to the mix, someone to really battle with Quinn and Rachel. And then, put them in an environment with all of these men and see how they react." She said the change will "shake up the show and make everything feel really fresh."

During the Facebook Live reveal (watch below), Appleby teased that "There will be 25 men on set and Rachel will hook up with all of them." Zimmer added, "You won't only have two strong female leads, but we're going to add a third one." Then she, too, made a joke about Quinn and Rachel hooking up with the guys. (Maybe producers Jay or Madison will hook up with them, too.)

It does sound like a smart plan, and not just to change up the "unREAL" format. Think about how much women enjoy watching ABC's "The Bachelorette" to see a woman in a power position, choosing between multiple great (and not so great) options. And, on a shallow note, it's much more fun for the largely female fan base to check out a bunch of hot men than to watch one (usually bland) guy check out a bunch of hot women.

We'll see the results, with the usual strong focus on Rachel and Quinn as the real bachelorettes, when "unREAL" Season 3 premieres in 2017 on Lifetime.

'The Walking Dead' Season 7 Ratings Drop Hard for Episode 2

Posted:

Did you do it? Did you really stop watching "The Walking Dead" after the Season 7 premiere? TWD is still the biggest thing on TV, so most fans did not stop watching. However, for any number of potential reasons, the October 30 Episode 2 dropped about 27 percent from the Season 7 premiere. You missed Shiva the tiger!

The Season 7 premiere earned close to the highest numbers ever, with 17.03 million viewers and an 8.4 rating in the 18-49 demo. Episode 2 fell hard from that, to 12.46 million viewers and a 6.1 rating. But compared to everyone else, that's still great. And, as Variety noted, most second episodes see drop-offs in the lower double-digits, and TWD's demo rating still beats every other scripted TV series. No one at AMC is going to ugly cry.

Still, this is a larger-than-usual dip for "The Walking Dead." As TV By the Numbers reported:

"That's about twice as big a decline from the premiere to Episode 2 as in recent seasons. The second episodes of Seasons 4, 5 and 6 declined by about 14 percent on average. The episode after the record-setting Season 5 debut declined by by 11.5 percent in adults 18-49."

The most-watched episode of TWD to date is still the Season 5 premiere, which had 17.29 million viewers and an 8.7 rating. It fell in Episode 2 as well, but only to 15.14 million and a 7.7 rating.

It's possible some fans felt the Kingdom-set Episode 2 was not must-watch enough to see "live," and chose instead to watch the World Series or "Sunday Night Football." They may catch up this week through DVR, On Demand, etc. Episode 3 takes us back to Daryl Dixon's predicament, so we'll have to see if more TWD fans tune in to watch that on Sunday, November 6, or if we did really lose a lot more family members than just Glenn and Abraham.

Delayed 'Toy Story 4' Aims for a New Story 'That Hasn't Been Done'

Posted:

When the news came out that "Toy Story 4" was being bumped to 2019, with "The Incredibles 2" on the fast track, it left some wondering if there was trouble in infinity (and beyond). But in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Pixar filmmaker Pete Docter talked about finding the right story to tell with the fourth movie, and avoiding a repeat of the past.

"It's hard, because as we get in there, we realize you don't want this to just be another regurgitation of something we've seen. We've really plumbed the depths of these characters with Woody and Buzz, so to find something new that hasn't been done, I feel like we're onto it now. But it's taken some real deep investigative work."

Docter is "only helping develop the film's story," as EW put it, with the "franchise reboot" script being written by Rashida Jones and Will McCormack. Docter said that, last he saw, the writers and Pixar chief John Lasseter were still including the story element of a romantic relationship between Woody and Bo Peep.

"Again, it brings it to something that you haven't seen before, which I think is what people want. On the one hand, you like the familiarity, you like these characters, you want to see them again — but if it was the same movie or it felt like, 'Eh, it was a little bit like 'Toy Story 2,' then we're kind of sunk."

Then again, you could argue that "Star Wars" just found success riding the nostalgia retread wave with "The Force Awakens." Sometimes familiarity to the point of reminiscent is welcome. But it's always good to hear that filmmakers are holding themselves to a high standard of originality, and we certainly trust that Pixar won't let us down.

"Toy Story 4" is now scheduled for release June 21, 2019.

This 'Suicide Squad' Waltz Got a Perfect Score on 'Dancing With the Stars'

Posted:

The Joker and Harley owned the ballroom last night on the "Dancing With the Stars" Halloween episode.

IndyCar driver James Hinchcliffe and pro dancer Jenna Johnson dressed in "Suicide Squad" costumes for their Viennese Waltz to "You Don't Own Me," and earned three perfect 10s. Judge Julianne Hough almost fell over from swooning at the dance, which also gave James immunity from the subsequent Dance Off. (Three dances had perfect scores on Monday, but James had the highest cumulative scores of the season, so he got immunity.)

Pro dancer Jenna was/is filling in for James's regular pro partner, Sharna Burgess, who injured her knee and had to sit out this week. She may be out for the rest of the season, but hopefully she can pull through at least in time for the finale, since it's likely that Team Stop and Go will be finalists.

Watch the "Suicide Squad" dance:

The timing is pretty good, too, since the Joker and Harley will be featured in more scenes in the extended cut of "Suicide Squad," coming out very soon.

'Grey's Anatomy' Winter Finale Has 'Justice,' a 'Big Decision,' & Revealed 'Truths'

Posted:

GREY'S ANATOMY - "Catastrophe and the Cure" - Meredith considers her loyalties, as Alex deals with the repercussions of his actions. Newlyweds Amelia and Owen host a dinner party with unlikely guests, and Jackson proposes an arrangement to help April through her recovery, on "Grey's Anatomy," THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 29 (8:00-9:00 p.m. EDT), on the ABC Television Network. (ABC/Byron Cohen)JUSTIN CHAMBERSThe characters of "Grey's Anatomy" are juggling multiple secrets in Season 13, and "a couple long-coming truths" will be revealed in the 2016 winter finale.

Giacomo Gianniotti (DeLuca) and Jerrika Hinton (Stephanie) previously teased that the Alex and DeLuca storyline would reach a "fever pitch" in the midseason finale, and now we have even more intriguing teases on the episode, which will air Thursday, November 17.

Here's what ABC released about Episode 9, called "You Haven't Done Nothin'":

ALEX MAKES A BIG DECISION THAT COULD HAVE LIFE-CHANGING CONSEQUENCES, ON THE WINTER FINALE OF ABC'S 'GREY'S ANATOMY'

Believing he is going to jail tomorrow, Alex makes a big decision about his future. While the hospital is overrun with victims of a building collapse, Richard demands answers from Bailey about Eliza's presence at Grey Sloan, on the winter finale of "Grey's Anatomy."

So we know that Alex will at least think he's headed to jail the next day, so does that mean he's convicted of assault in the court trial? Does he considering bailing? Does something happen at the last minute to change his fate for the better?

By the way, the "Eliza" of the synopsis is Eliza Minnick (Marika Dominczyk), described as "a new consultant who puts all of the doctors on edge, especially once she starts stepping on toes in the OR." We'll first see her this Thursday, November 3 in Episode 7.

Entertainment Weekly asked Hinton, Gianniotti, and co-stars Kelly McCreary (Maggie) and Jason George (Ben) to describe the midseason finale in one word, and here's what they said:

McCreary: "Rubble."

Hinton: "Complicated."

George: "Justice."

Justice is an interesting answer, and the interpretation could go in either direction.

Gianniotti shared more than one word, and teased some secrets coming out: "There are certainly a couple long-coming truths that are revealed."

Will Amelia reveal her tragic past to Owen? Will Jo reveal her own dark past to Alex, or will DeLuca end up revealing it? Will the Meredith/Maggie/Riggs situation come to a head? Will Richard get fired by his own wife?

Answers will be here soon, and then we'll be left with more questions until the 2017 return.

"Grey's Anatomy" Season 13 airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. on ABC.

Zach Galifianakis Joins 'A Wrinkle in Time'

Posted:

US-PREMIERE-CELEBRITIESThe already star-studded cast of literary adaptation "A Wrinkle in Time" continues to expand its constellation of talent, adding comedian Zach Galifianakis to the fold.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Galifianakis has joined the fantasy flick as the character Happy Medium, described by the trade as "a man who is able to view different times and places." The film is based on the 1963 novel by Madeleine L'Engle, which chronicles a young girl's search across time and space for her missing scientist father.

In addition to Galifianakis, the cast includes relative newcomer Storm Reid in the lead role as Meg Murray; Chris Pine as her missing father; Gugu Mbatha-Raw as her mother; and the A-list trio of Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, and Mindy Kaling, who are playing the supernatural characters Mrs. Which, Mrs. Whatsit, and Mrs. Who, respectively, who guide Meg on her adventures. Ava DuVernay ("Selma") is directing the feature for Disney, and both are committed to making the film as diverse as possible, with a mixed-race Murray family at the heart of the flick.

In a Nov. 1 press release, Disney also announced André Holland as Principal Jenkins, Levi Miller as Calvin, and Deric McCabe as Charles Wallace. A trio of actors -- Bellamy Young, Rowan Blanchard, and Will McCormack -- have also been added to that cast.

There are plenty of other quirky characters that still need to be cast, so look for additional exciting announcements in the weeks ahead. There's no official release date yet for "A Wrinkle in Time," but it's currently expected in theaters sometime in 2018.

New 'Power Rangers' Photos Reveal the High School Students Behind the Heroes

Posted:

A new set of photos from the upcoming "Power Rangers" reboot gives a glimpse into life for the titular heroes outside of fighting aliens like Rita and trying to save the world. Sometimes, it's harder trying to survive high school.

It looks like the flick will spend a good chunk of time focusing on the Rangers as they navigate the halls of Angel Grove High School, and how they transform from ordinary teenagers into butt-kicking heroes. Thanks to a viral marketing site for the flick, which is posing as the online version of the school's student newspaper, The Roar, we have a bunch of new insights into the people behind the Rangers' masks.

Based on the stories on the site, each Ranger already has a distinct personality: Billy (the Blue Ranger, played by R.J. Cyler) is the school brainiac, who's gotten himself a lot of detention lately; Kimberly (the Pink Ranger, played by Naomi Scott) used to be a popular cheerleader, though she's recently given up her pom-poms; Jason (the Red Ranger, played by Dacre Montgomery) was the star of the football team before a prank got him suspended for the season; Trini (the Yellow Ranger, played by Becky G.) is a loner who's been mistaken for a new student, despite having attended AGHS for over a year; and Zack (the Black Ranger, played by Ludi Lin) is a bit of an enigma, but considered one of the school's hottest guys.

The Roar also documents some mysterious happenings that recently closed the cafeteria, pointing out that Kimberly, Jason, and Billy were all there when things went down. We're guessing that that incident had something to do with the Rangers' newly-discovered powers (and the odd, alien-generated suits that grow around them); the rest of their classmates probably just think they're freaks.

"Power Rangers" hits theaters on March 24, 2017. Expect more updates from The Roar until then.

'Fantastic Beasts' Cast Teases 'Epic' Five-Film Series, J.K. Rowling's Vision

Posted:

If you were surprised to learn that the upcoming "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" trilogy would actually be a five-film series instead, you weren't alone: the movie's own cast didn't know about that plan, either. But according to the stars, it makes perfect sense, especially considering screenwriter and "Harry Potter" mastermind J.K. Rowling's sprawling vision for the story.

Eddie Redmayne and Katherine Waterston chatted about the flick at the EW PopFest this past weekend, and admitted their shock over learning that there would be four more films after the first flick hits theaters later this month. That kind of secrecy is par for the course, the actors said, though they understand why Rowling would want to spend more time in the Wizarding World.

"The thing is that it's [Rowling's] imagination," Redmayne explained. "She has such a passion for it and a specific story that she wants to tell."

And according to the actor, that story will extend far beyond the scope of what three films could do.

"I think 'Fantastic Beasts' the title and Newt and his creatures are a way into this world, but there's a much bigger story here about good versus evil that she wants to tell, and you haven't seen much of it in the trailers and the clips of the film," Redmayne said. "But it's really a core of the story that she's telling and it has an epic, epic quality to it. ... So I do see that ['Fantastic Beasts'] is a macro story that could take more time."

We're definitely on board for whatever magic Rowling has in store. The first entry in the "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" series is set for release on November 18.

Peyton Reed Teases 'Crazy Stuff' in 'Ant-Man and the Wasp'

Posted:

ant-man and the waspHere's something to grow on, Ant-Man fans: even after the superhero's surprise growth spurt in Marvel's "Captain America: Civil War," filmmaker Peyton Reed promises he's got plenty more tales to astonish for the sequel, "Ant-Man and the Wasp."

When Moviefone caught up with director Reed, who helmed the first installment of the insect-sized superhero's adventures with last year's "Ant-Man," he was about to head into pre-production on the follow-up film, which is slated to hit theaters in July 2018. And, as he reveals, this one's going to dig much deeper into exactly what kind of heroes Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) and Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) will become.

Moviefone: What does seeing a new Marvel movie like "Doctor Strange" do for you, creatively? What kind of stuff does it stir up?

Peyton Reed: Well, it's a mixed bag. Because, as a comics fan growing up, to see all these heroes brought to life on the screen in such huge fashion is always exciting. As the director of a movie that's coming like three, four, five movies later, the bar is always raised, and it's great. It's a challenge.

Because they're always making technical breakthroughs, and also just story breakthroughs, one of the great things about Marvel is you want to do movies that are doing something different and not treading on what the other movies are doing. So it's always exciting because they manage to top themselves.

Where are you in your creative efforts for the next one? Have you broken your story?

We're in the writing phase right now and we start official prep this month. So it's sort of long-lead prep, but we're starting to get into all of the visual development stuff, and it's really exciting.

Tell me about how Paul Rudd adds his voice in this early startup process, because he is so much of what makes Ant-Man Ant-Man.

Well, he is Ant-Man on screen, but he also was one of the screenwriters on the first movie, and, for me as a director, that's great because he's so invested in the character, and so he's a part of the writing process on this movie, as well.

And it's great because when you make a movie with someone, it's a very close relationship. So we're going into this movie already having forged that bond, and we're playing with a lot of ideas, and we're coming up with some crazy stuff!

Is your tendency to be like, "OK, let's grab what we can in the Marvel Universe and have some fun with it," or do you want to keep the "Ant-Man" corner of the universe a little more Ant-Man-centric?

No, I think we like our little Ant-Man corner of the universe. Because it's a whole different vibe tonally, but also just in terms of who Scott Lang, who Ant-Man is: he is a guy who is maybe not so sure he wants to be like this Avenger-style, full-on superhero.

He's got a kid, and this is the inner conflict with him, and he's very much just like a normal guy who has come into contact with some incredible power. So, we like that aspect of kind of like it being its own little corner of the universe.

The flipside of that is that we heard that Evangeline Lilly and the Wasp are going to be in "Avengers 4." Tell me about sharing your characters. What's fun about letting one of your heavy-hitters go into somebody else's movie.

Again, that is one of the sort of things where it's a mixed bag. When I first found out -- gosh, I don't know, two years ago, a year-and-a-half ago -- that "Civil War" was going to get the Giant-Man premiere, I was like "No!" But, now, I've since recovered, and we have a lot more in store for Scott Lang in this movie.

We get to see the Wasp debut -- we're all about the Wasp and Ant-Man. So I like it, because we spend a lot of time with our different writers and directors, and there's a lot of crosstalk, and I love that.

Lastly, what do you want to do with the Wasp now that we're in this great moment for female superheroes and you're going to have an opportunity to do something fun and cool with one of the premiere Marvel superheroines -- one of the very first. What are you excited about in collaborating with Evangeline, to carry the Wasp forward?

Well, I'm just personally excited to get to introduce yet another character into the Marvel Universe. After Ant-Man, now we get to see Wasp, so really designing her look, the way she moves, the power set, and figuring out, sort of, who Hope van Dyne is as a hero -- because we know her in a certain context in the first movie, but now she's going to have her coming out party -- that's exciting!

DC's 'The Flash' Movie Loses Director Rick Famuyiwa

Posted:

Film-The Flash-Rick FamuyiwaFor the second time, DC's upcoming standalone feature "The Flash" has lost its director, with Rick Famuyiwa leaving the project this week.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Famuyiwa's decision to depart came down to a familiar excuse, with "creative differences" cited as the main factor for his exit. The director reportedly "clashed" with studio execs over his desire to make "a movie with more edge," per THR.

In a statement released to THR, Famuyiwa didn't delve into the specifics behind his departure, but praised the movie's titular star, studio, and producers. The statement said:

"When I was approached by Warner Bros. and DC about the possibility of directing The Flash, I was excited about the opportunity to enter this amazing world of characters that I loved growing up, and still do to this day. I was also excited to work with Ezra Miller, who is a phenomenal young actor. I pitched a version of the film in line with my voice, humor and heart. While it's disappointing that we couldn't come together creatively on the project, I remain grateful for the opportunity. I will continue to look for opportunities to tell stories that speak to a fresh generational, topical and multicultural point of view. I wish Warner Bros., DC, Jon Berg, Geoff Johns and Ezra Miller all the best as they continue their journey into the speed force."

Famuyiwa joined the film in June, and had overseen the casting of two key roles, to be played by Kiersey Clemons and Billy Crudup. He had taken over for previous director Seth Grahame-Smith, who had joined the project back in October 2015, but subsequently left the flick earlier this year, also due to reported creative differences.

THR reports that production on "The Flash" -- and its subsequent release date -- will now most likely be delayed, since Miller has a commitment next summer that will conflict with the shifting shooting schedule. The flick was initially pegged to begin production in March 2017, and hit theaters on March 16, 2018.

Stay tuned to see who takes the directing gig next, and how this will affect DC's future release slate.

Millie Bobby Brown Returning as Eleven in 'Stranger Things' Season 2

Posted:

Stranger ThingsLeggo her Eggos!

TV Line reports that Millie Bobby Brown will definitely return as Eleven in season 2 of Netflix's "Stranger Things." The fate of the superpower-wielding tween was left up in the air at the end of season 1, when she vanished while defeating the monster from the Upside Down.

But in the last scene of the finale Chief Hopper (David Harbour) left a box of Eggo waffles (her favorite food) in a box in the woods, indicating she could still be alive.

While the show confirmed the return of most of the cast, Brown was conspicuously left off the list. And season 2 added two new characters, including a girl named Max who "looks more like a boy than a girl."

Fear not, though — looks like Eleven will be back in some way. Season 2 picks up a year later, in 1984, and explores the "bigger mythology" of the Upside Down. It is expected to stream on Netflix sometime in 2017.

Mo'Nique Gets Naughty in Exclusive 'Almost Christmas' Clip

Posted:

The holiday season means the return of wintry weather, exchanging gifts, and spending time with family and friends. Just how much you enjoy that latter tradition depends on your DNA, and for the family at the heart of "Almost Christmas," it will be a miracle if they make it out of the proceedings alive.

The comedy, which centers around the Meyers family, features the patriarch (Danny Glover) asking his loved ones for only one present this year: To get along with each other. But as we see in this clip, premiering today exclusively on Moviefone and Aol, they can't even make it through a pickup football game without some shenanigans.

Trash talking about fashion choices, inappropriate touching, showing off gymnastics moves, and some odd flirting all find their way into the proceedings. And that's before Aunt May (played by Oscar winner Mo'Nique) fires off a naughty (and NSFW) one-liner that leaves her fellow sideline spectators in stitches. Clearly, there's never a dull moment with the Meyers crew.

"Almost Christmas," which also stars Gabrielle Union, Kimberly Elise, J.B. Smoove, John Michael Higgins, Romany Malco, Omar Epps, Nicole Ari Parker, Jessie T. Usher, and DC Young Fly, hits theaters on November 11.almost christmasPhoto credit: Universal

'The Bachelor' Premiere Date, Nick Viall's First Promo Revealed

Posted:

BachelorFourth time's the charm? "The Bachelor" star Nick Viall is keeping his fingers crossed.

ABC announced the premiere date for Viall's season of the reality dating show: Monday, Jan. 2, 2017. This will be the 36-year-old tech salesman's fourth time on the show: He was runner-up in Andi Dorfman and Kaitlyn Bristowe's seasons of "The Bachelorette," and he appeared on "Bachelor in Paradise" this past summer.

"After all these years, and all the heartbreak, it's finally Nick's turn to hand out the roses. Will he finally find that love he's craved? He believes in finding love on the series and hopes it is his time now," ABC said in a statement.

"The Bachelor" also recently released the first promo, featuring Viall looking dapper in a suit and handing out roses over the sounds of screaming women. Host Chris Harrison recently teased that fans can expect some waterworks this season -- and not only from the female contestants.

"[Nick] hit a little low point, as all of the 'Bachelors' do. You kind of reach this emotional bottom where you get stripped down," he said, then referenced prevous bachelor Jason Mesnick. "If you know what a Mesnick is, I will let you know that he pulled a full Mesnick. There will be man tears on this season for sure."

Annette Bening Tries to Raise a Good Man in New '20th Century Women' Trailer

Posted:

20th Century Women"Don't you need a man to raise a man?" a character asks Annette Bening's single mom in the new trailer for "20th Century Women."

"No, I don't think so," she responds, but there's a flicker of hesitation in her eyes.

"20th Century Women" is a coming-of-age tale set in 1979 for both Bening's Dorothea and her teenage son, Jamie (Lucas Jade Zumann). As she tries to figure out how to keep connected to Jamie, Dorothea turns to two younger women, punk artist Abbie (Greta Gerwig) and teen neighbor Julie (Elle Fanning) to help her guide him through the turbulent, confusing, exciting time known as adolescence.
The trailer is all cool California colors and dreamy vibes. Bening looks to give an outstanding performance, and it's no wonder she's already being talked about as a frontrunner in the upcoming awards season.

"20th Century Women" opens in theaters Christmas Day.

17 Things You Never Knew About Baz Luhrmann's 'Romeo + Juliet'

Posted:

Every generation seems to get the Shakespeare adaptations it deserves, and in the mid-'90s, that meant Baz Luhrmann's music-video-style, visually extravagant "William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet."

The hit film helped make a romantic leading man out of Leonardo DiCaprio, a movie star out of Claire Danes, and Bard fans out of a generation weaned on MTV. To mark the film's 20th anniversary (it was released on November 1, 1996), here are the whys and wherefores behind the making of the movie.
1. Hollywood courted Luhrmann after the Australian director's low-budget debut, "Strictly Ballroom," became an international smash. Asked to write his own ticket, he announced that what he really wanted to do was adapt "Romeo and Juliet," done the way Shakespeare might have done it himself if he had the resources of a 20th century movie studio instead of a 16th century theater.

"We're trying to make this movie rambunctious, sexy, violent and entertaining," Luhrmann said, "the way Shakespeare might have if he was a filmmaker."

2. Luhrmann wanted to keep as much of the original text as possible, but he also wanted it spoken with American accents -- not just to help the box office, but because he also believed it was more authentic. No, really -- Luhrmann cited the work of "A Clockwork Orange" author and Shakespeare scholar Anthony Burgess to claim that the Elizabethan accent sounded a lot more like contemporary American speech than like the plummy tones of Laurence Olivier or Kenneth Branagh.
3. The idea of making the Montagues and Capulets into rival street gangs had been done before, most famously in "West Side Story." But the idea of setting it in a community that resembled Miami was new. "We thought, 'Scarface,' 'Miami Vice,'" explained co-screenwriter Craig Pearce. "Miami seemed to be a world in which the very wealthy and glamorous live alongside the very poor, a society influenced by Latin culture and punctuated with violence."

4. Even so, Luhrmann discovered that there was a Latin city even more Elizabethan than Miami, with even greater extremes of wealth and poverty, more pronounced codes of tribal honor, and religious iconography everywhere that would look great on film: Mexico City. Most of "Romeo + Juliet" would be filmed there, either on soundstages, among local landmarks, or in whole cities constructed in the middle of nowhere.
5. Luhrmann found his leading man in a magazine's party picture pages, shortly after DiCaprio's Oscar nomination for "What's Eating Gilbert Grape." The Aussie was unfamiliar with the rising American star, but his idea for the project so intrigued DiCaprio that he flew to Australia on his own dime to workshop the part with Luhrmann, just to see if he could master the tricky language and the combat scenes.

6. Indeed, it was footage of DiCaprio fighting that convinced 20th Century Fox to greenlight the movie.
7. For Juliet, Luhrmann cast Natalie Portman, then hot off her star-making role in "The Professional." She was 14, which was about the right age for Juliet in the text.

8. Unfortunately, DiCaprio was 21, and Paul Rudd (as Dave Paris, Juliet's fiancé) was 26. The age gap between the legal-age leading man and the pubescent starlet appeared so unnerving in early footage that the studio fired Portman. "Fox said it looked like Leonardo DiCaprio was molesting me when we kissed," she said at the time.9. Luhrmann embarked on a worldwide search for a new Juliet, and while he was unfamiliar with 17-year-old Danes, DiCaprio was an admirer of hers, based on her starring performance on TV's "My So-Called Life." The feeling was mutual; in fact, she had a fangirl crush on Leo. Nonetheless, she kept it together when she read for the part. "She was the only girl that looked me in the eye in auditions," DiCaprio said. "She was right there, in front of my face, saying every line with power."

10. With pistols instead of swords, the Montague and Capulet posses had to spend two months learning how to wield guns and do trick moves with them.
11. John Leguizamo, who played Tybalt (above), recalled being a klutz who repeatedly dropped his weapon at first, but eventually, he mastered the art of gunplay. "I can do shows in Vegas now," he joked.

12. For many of the Verona Beach scenes, the shoot moved out of Mexico City to an elaborate set built in Veracruz. There, the cast and crew had to cope with plagues they later joked were biblical in scope, including a hurricane and killer bees.
13. The production design is so full of references to various Shakespeare plays -- in retail signs (Rosencrantzky's Burgers), names of consumer products (Agincourt cigarettes), and graffiti on walls -- that it takes many repeat viewings to notice them all.

14. One reference you probably didn't spot? As Romeo is on his way toward his encounter with Juliet via the fish tank, he passes a man at a urinal who's wearing a Renaissance costume. This is supposed to be William Shakespeare himself. There's no way to tell, as we never see the man's face; it's just an in-joke so exclusive that Luhrmann put it in the film to amuse only himself.
15. "Romeo + Juliet" cost a reported $14.5 million to make. It earned back $46.4 million in the United States and a total of $147.6 million around the world. Luhrmann was especially pleased that the film opened at No. 1 at home in Australia, ahead of imported Hollywood disaster movie "Daylight." Said Luhrmann, "I know Shakespeare will be happy to hear that he outgrossed Sylvester Stallone."

16. The movie was nominated for just one Oscar, for its production design.
17. Three years after gospel choirboy Quindon Tarver's rendition of Rozalla's "Everybody's Free (To Feel Good)" adorned the "Romeo + Juliet" soundtrack, Luhrmann remixed it with a spoken-word essay, an imaginary graduation speech written by Chicago Tribune columnist Mary Schmich but commonly misattributed to novelist Kurt Vonnegut. The result was the worldwide hit "Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen)."
